Wanting a mac pro

I am looking at buying a mac pro (used one, I'm a student so I can't afford a lot). anyway I used to have a Power mac G5 with Final Cut Studio 2, (1.8ghz, 4GB RAM) how much fast would you say the mac pro is?
also anyone who says mac pros are over priced are wrong. My friends keep saying that while I'm looking for one. but, it's simply not true, when you buy a macbook I think you pay a little more to get the mac brand but I built (built as in my shopping cart) a system two the mac pro 8 core specs and it came out to be $4,446.17, the Xeon cpus are $1,249.99 each alone. so they aren't overpriced [/END MY PLUG FOR APPLE] LOL

The new Mac Pros are substantially faster than your G5. Of course how much faster depends on whether you are considering a 4-core or 8-core model since the latter is nearly twice as fast as the former.

  • Want new Mac Pro With Snow Leopard

I am after a new Mac Pro with Snow Leopard.
I understand that some of the newer Mac Pros can have Snow Leopard installed.  Some tell me that in the recent past Apple made a change that made installation of Snow Leopard difficult or impossible on a Mac Pro.
Does anyone know with a reasonable degree of certainty how to tell if a given Mac Pro can have Snow Leopard installed?
I called Apple about a refurbished Mac Pro, they don't know what operating system it will come with!  And they don't know if it will include OS installation disks.

For what it is worth, I recently went through this drama.
    Well, it's worth a lot!
it is theoretically possible for Apple to modify the firmware to prevent Snow from booting, but my experience is that this has not happened yet.
How long ago did you purchase your Mac Pro? (I miss the old days, when users would modify their own firmware.)
See if you can buy from a seller who will let you test this out. There are some nice retailers out there, especially when you are dropping $1000s on a new Mac Pro.
I've been looking for a while now, Mac Pro sellers that have Snow Leopard know how valuable there machines are. There are no bargains if you want snow leopard.
We couldn't install Snow directly on the Mac Pro, so I installed on another computer (an older Mac Pro), and updated to 10.6.8 and swapped the drive across. This worked without issues.
    I currently own a 2008 Mac Pro (2,1) with 10.6.8
See if you can buy from a seller who will let you test this out.
Why not Apple?  They have a 15 Day return policy.   When I called Apple recently the person I spoke to suggested this.

  • GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition Graphics Card advice wanted 2008 Mac Pro. Eight core desktop.

I have read some threads yet it is not clear to me if it is a good move to upgrade an Mac Pro eight core 3.1- 2008 to use GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition Graphics Card. I ask as my GeForce 8800 GT 2008 card has given up the ghost, and it has done sterling service R.I.P.. The machine is in the repair shop for a service itself, and this problem. So I thought an upgrade, as I am at it. Daunting choice out there. Um, learning curve and all that!
I mainly do 2D graphics, Canvas, Adobe stuff, yet a little amount of video, which may grow some. No games on this work horse!
So here I am fishing for experienced advice were my own is not, from anyone who has done this. Has it held up, do you get a boot screen, does it run two monsters easily via DVI.
If you have one or something good fitted please share the skinny!
For me it is turning into the year of the video card. My laptop looks like it got the disease first!
    Thanks.

#4: GTX 285, no idea how 'safe' as often read someone (not Macvidcards) flashed PC card and sold as "Mac" and they are old, and may not be supported in Mavericks (and that would apply to a 8800 too).

A new gpu is $5000 cheaper than an overhaul and new MP.
A 2008 though will never perform as well as later models. Ideal is 2010 or later.
Even a top of the line iMac with GTX if you are having a lot of trouble and thinking of ditching the 2008.

  • Wanting new Mac Pro

Being a PC guy for many years I'm considering the switch to Mac. I was looking at the new 27' iMac however changing or adding hardware is limited. Therefore the Mac Pro would seem to be a better choice.
My main use will be photo editing. Converting Canon 5dMII raw files initially to 16 bit tiff files, approx 100mb per file. My printing is done with Qimage Pro(windows). The program I use for converting the raw files is Bibble Pro which is both Mac or Windows. Therefore I will have to install Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit also using Parallels or Fusion.
Will tiff files created on the mac side be used on the windows side for printing and tiff or jpeg files altered on the windows side be used on the mac side? Can Windows Office 2007 files be used on the Mac side?
I know very little about Mac so any info or suggestions will be appreciated.
The Mac Pro build I'm considering is:
    Two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    16GB (8x2GB)
    2x 640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
    ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB
    One 18x SuperDrive
    Apple Mouse
Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (English) and User's Guide
    iWork preinstalled
    Aperture preinstalled
Would this build be over kill?
    Thanks in advance.

Just to repeat what I suggested previously,
    * run Windows from its own hard drive (aka Boot Camp
    * why limit yourself to 32-bit and a VM? I wouldn't.
    * you need Windows 7 Pro to use dual processor.
    * Office 2007 is Windows, so no,
    * Fusion to run Windows under Mac OS (side by side)
    * use Office for Mac 2008
32-bit is too limiting for today
Sharing files between both platforms is what finally drove to me build a couple PCs instead of trying to have Mac and Windows on a single system.
I was never happy with using VM; not my taste or took too much away in terms of mouse features and other items.
I have a nice KVM from Gefen with fast reliable switching for monitor, scanner and printer and mouse shared between both (wish I'd gotten a 3 or 4 computer DVI but for cost).
You could have an NTFS drive for sharing and use MacFUSE or Paragon to add ability for Mac OS to WRITE to NTFS; or MacDrive so Windows can read/write to HFS+. Neither is perfect.
Not sure you need Ultimate, doesn't add much over Pro, nothing I needed but I had a free upgrade to Ultimate....

  • MAC PRO REFUSES TO BE CLOCKED BY EXTERNAL WORDCLOCK!

I used my Apogee Rosetta 200 as AD/DA and Wordclock going direktly into optical input on a G5 ...
    worked perfectly together for years.
pretty much what i loved macs for.
alas! those times are gone. with my new built mid 2010 machine and os 10.6.8 running, i get these
tiny clicks all the time, whatever they mean now... in the past on G5 and Tiger that meant: forgot switch to external clock in
the AMS (audio-midi-setup), done it, and ::: wow!!!
nowadays: total fail! i can set the Rosetta or the mac to whatever settings there are offerd, i ALWAYS get these clicks
and the sound is dull ...
i wonder, what has happenend here ... and after a month of research i´m getting really angry, too ...
Apogee claimed that Apple is known for changing the specs of the built in internal soundcard
every now an then. (not much help from there, either, but still better than no help at all from Apple)
Dear all: please,  i don´t need any of those "get a firewire-card/new interface, sth with a driver" - comments.
I just want the mac pro to live up to it´s name. and i need someone at Apple to tell me, that i really have to
completely rearrange my trustet & expensive equipment and spend another 2000 EUR to let a MAC PRO
sound as good as a 5 year old G5 machine ... (or be as fast, talking about 32 Bit modus!!!)
this whole development scares the **** out of me .. we surely do
not want to change the plattform, but one gets the notion that not before long they just want us to ...
    sorry for bothering ...

    Hi louie!
thank you so very much for caring!! I´ll try to provide as much information as possible:::
    sorted it into ABCD
    A: THE MAC
Machine is a MAC PRO5,1 built mid 2010, Quad Core Intel Xeon 2,4 Ghz
System is 10.6.8   (had the same issues under 10.7.x, too)
i get those clicks every 10 - 15 Seconds, some left, some right,
i get them in every audio, e.g. quicktime movies., itunes songs ... no so frequently, but they are there ..
Sound is otherwise ok, no fuzz or other artefacts than the clicksies ...
borrowed a Fireface UC just to be sure ... no clickies at all.
    B: AMS
in AMS i created a "Hauptgerät" (Main Device or whatever its called in the US System)
    it shows:
    DIGITAL INPUT (with a Clock-Icon)
DIGTAL OUTPUT (With a wave icon)
With MAIN DEVICE highlightes, the puldown menu on the right says: "Source for clock : Digital Inpit (inegrated)"
In the list of audio-devices below Digi-Out and In boxes are checked, AMS puts a checksign into the "resample" of Digital Output ... don´t know why ...
If beneath MAIN DEVICE i highlight the "digital input" it shows on the right:::
    Master stream
    source: Internal Clock
    Format: 44100,0 kkz 10 Channel, 24 Bit
But AMS crashes everytime i highlight "digital input" (thats a new "feature"!)
    C: ROSETTA 200
says Wide/Narrow , meaning "clock locked"
    Sample Rate 44,1
SRC is not on, neither on DIGI nor ANALOG outputs
WC/IO ist not set to external
(i don´t know the rosetta so well, it just always worked, so i never had to dig deeper)
    D: LOGIC
as far as i know and reseached there is no place in Logic where you would talk care of
    clocking (apart from MTC)
I/O Buffer is 256 Samples, but anyway, i have the clicks on every audio from every application
so, thats all i can offer you ... can you think of whats going wrong here?!?!? i do hope so ...
thanks for offering your help ,,, much appreciated!!!
    best

  • What is the best way to ship a Mac Pro from Australia to New York

I am migrating from Melbourne Australia to New York next month and naturally, i want my Mac Pro to come along for the ride.
Has anyone expereienced a move like this?  Who would you reccommend as a transport company?

Computers are a commodity. They have no art value. We can become very attached to them, but they are interchangeable.
I recommend you seriously consider selling your computer in Australia, and buying a new one when you get to New York. I can't see shipping 65 lb chassis halfway around the world.
The only part that is at all delicate is the Hard drives. Once the heads are parked, they are not that delicate any more. As long as you pack the rest so that it cannot rattle in the box, it will be fine.
Apple uses styrofoam as the packing material inside the corrugated box because it absorbs crushing energy by deforming. It is not an accident that it is also used inside bike and motorcycle helmets. Resilient foam (like a couch cushion) is springy, but does not absorb or dissipate the crushing energy of an accident or a fall.

  • G5 Quad or Mac Pro?

I was prepared to purchase a QUAD G5 (w/7800 card) a few months ago and I decided to wait for the WWDC announcements... Now, I'm torn between the G5 QUAD and the Mac Pro (3Ghz w/1900 card). They both offer a mix of benefits...
BTW: I have a need to scan thousands of film negatives (via Nikon film scanner) and some prints (via flatbed scanner). I will scan to 16 bit (110 Mb files) and will catalog in Aperture. I'm not sure what software or drivers I will want to use or will be required to use...
I also use FC Studio, MX Studio, CS2, and have some interest in After Effects. Over the years I have not used Adobe products heavily; yet, that's changing. I mention this because this may impact your recommendation below.
    What option would perform best?
    I appreciate your input.
    Thanks,
    Robert

The Mac Pro (Intel) is the future obviously, and the G5 is going to fade away into oblivion. But that is 6 months down the pike. Even loaded up with a moderate amount of RAM the MP is pretty snappy running Rosetta. The question that only you can answer is, is that fast enough for you. And does all the legacy software you need to run work well under Rosetta.
Right now the G5 is still the better platform to run Adobe products. Once CS3 comes out that will change and you'll want a Mac Pro. So keep in mind that any benefits a G5 offers will be short lived. If you do a lot of business scanning then you can afford to buy a G5 now, and sell it when CS3 comes out. Otherwise, you either have to commit to being locked into a system for 3 years, and gradually lose pace with competitor's (who have Mac Pros) productivity or compromise your productivity now for a few months until CS3 ships. There is no real surefire choice right now in your situation.
FC Studio is already UB, so your decision really seems to hinge on how much you use CS2 daily, and how well the Nikon software works on the MP.

  • Mac Pro won't recognize airport card or existing network

I have a 2007 Macbook in the house with an old Belkin MIMO router. the wireless netwrok works fine. In fact, my son waltzes in and says "hey what's the wireless password?" and logs on INSTANTLY on his Macbook Pro.  Now we have a (desktop) Mac Pro with a new Airport Extreme card, and the Mac Pro cannot find the network - it's only 5 feet away. The name of the network does not appear where the network names should populate. We've typed it, and the WPA password in 100 times, and nothing, justs keeps asking the same question. Filling in PPPOE info doesn't work either.
NOTE: We do NOT have the airport extreme base at this house. We simply want the Mac Pro to FIND the existing network (Belkin wireless router and good old Airport on the 2007 Macbook so the Mac Pro can get on the internet wirelessly.
Anyone have any ideas? Is the bios just not recognizing the new Airport Extreme card? How should it be configured?
    Thank you!

There are four tiny black wires inside, three of which must be correctly connected to the AirPort card before you have any hope of connection over wireless.
Stay away from PPPoE unless you have been told by your ISP that there is no other possible way to log on to the internet.
    Turn OFF IPv6 if possible.
If the card is functioning, you get an Airport/WiFi pane in System Preferences > Network. You will also see it in System Profiler.

  • Which Mac to buy - Is a Mac Pro for me?

I have been using a PC for nearly 20 years starting in High School. I am desperate to change my ageing and slow PC for a Mac as I mainly use it for video and photo editing. To start with I will be using FCE 4 and Appeture 2, but see myself outgrowing these within a couple of years. For a while I have wanted a Mac Pro, but a friend recently suggested getting an iMac and upgrading it to 4GB ram and 1TB hard drive. I want to be able to easily upgrade my mac in months / years to come as I have done with my PC. Is the Mac Pro the best option for me, plus does any one have any ideas when the new Mac Pro may be announced. Possibly WWDC 2009 in June?
    Many thanks
    Matt

I just received my new Mac pro dual 3.2 system. I have been a Mac user for 15 years and find it hard to think about going to a PC. I have both PC and Mac, but do all design work on a Mac. The RIP programs need to use a PC and that's all I can do with them.
I too work some with video and I can tell you what I have come across. I started with FCP 3 when it come out and upgraded along the way and started using FCP Studio 2 recently. There seem to be more problems with all the HD stuff. I guess it depends on how much video you plan to do, but you will find it takes a heavy duty system if you plan to work in HD (highly dysfunctional). I have dealt with post production houses and most are using PC systems with Avid. All have a Mac with FCP, but it does not seem to be the main system they use. There is a big jump in price to go the next level and now the Mac Pro with FCP Studio is working OK. There are issues as I would think there would be with Avid, but I am not willing to spend the money to find out at this time. The other thing I ran into is the large Apple displays are a problem for some editing systems. I am running two 30 inch cinema displays and they will not work with Avid.
I feel Apple has dropped the ball on working with the graphics people that supported them for so many years. They are so big it is hard to deal with them like the old days and i-pods are their number one market. I am disappointed in the experience in this last purchase, but again, I can't see making the move to going all PC....not yet any way!
So depending on what you plan to do in the future, I would suggest looking deeper than the Apple site for suggestions on a new system. If you plan to work with video and stay under 30,000...Apple is the best option from my experience.

I want to Connect my Mac Mini as a Slave to a Mac pro Server while at the same time using the Mac mini's thunderbolt ports peripherals ( ie monitor, Sound Card, Hard drives) Creating a poor man's new mac Pro. Can this be Done?

Well, I really would love the new unreleased mac pro however , I'm not sure of the expected cost , Everyone speculates from $3,000 to $8,000, in which I may have to wait a while to purchase.
To the point .... I want fully functional thunderbolt ports to be on the current mac pro's .... wonder if anyone had workarounds yet?...  or could I chain the the current mac pro to a mac mini to make that happen?

And the same clicking on buttons that makes nothing happen and going around in circles with the escape key.

  • I have a 2007 Mac Pro running 10.7.5 and I want to replace a drive and install Lion

I have a 2007 Mac Pro running 10.7.5 with dual core intel 2.66 with 13 GB ram. I want to replace my startup disk 250GB (which has all my apps) but has been lagging ( I thinks it's an original drive) with the new HD in bay 2 (4 T drive) which I installed this week. I tried to install lion onto it and it said I needed a newer version 10.7.3-I have time machine as my backup on an external. All the bays are full and I'd like to trade them out sooner or later to get more room for movies, etc. The last OSX disk I have is Snow Leopard and that was rejected as not new enough. Can someone help me with info on installing Lion on the new drive. I know how to make it the startup disk after, but I can't seem to load 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8 (not supported on my older mac pro.) Thanks,
    ANNE Z

Firstly, time to get rid of the 2 x 512MB FBDIMMs in there, they add more heat and use more watts then they add to the system. If you need more, and 4 or 8 DIMMs is ideal, Amazon has 2x2GB sets $22 - about 1/50th what I paid for 1GB new.
    Buy a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD $129
Pick up Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com to clone the system to the SSD
A sled adapter for the SSD from Icy Dock $14 Amazon.com
7-8 years overdue for new system drive! amazed it lasted this long. An SSD plus some WD Black 2TB drives or larger should do the trick.
you can also put the SSD in the lower optical drive bay and use one of the two ODD "spare" SATA ports for the SSD - an SSD is the best way to improve the performance of our old Mac Pro 2006-7 models.
When you downloaded the Lion installer that was when to create a flash type installer with Lion DiskMaker.
If you have put in a new-ish graphic card then OS X 10.6.0 may not support it.

To get it on your Mac Pro just copy the aplication from the aplication folder on your MacBook.  You can do this via a thumb drive or over a local network connection.
