Wanting to buy a used iMacG5 Intel core

What should I look for in a used iMac G5-as far as reliability etc? Recommended price? How to know if its a good one?

To be even clearer, Apple released two white iMacs that looked exactly the same on the outside, but are completely different beasts on the inside. The G5 uses a CPU by IBM. The Intel CoreDuo, Core2Duo, i3, i5, i7 are all made by Intel. The G5 maxes out at Mac OS X 10.5.8, can run Mac OS 9 on top of Mac OS X with limited driver support in what's known as a Classic environment on 10.4.11 or earlier, and has no native Windows support, and all of that has to be emulated. The G5s came prebundled with AppleWorks, which while it works on Intel iMacs, they don't have AppleWorks included. Some iMac G5s can run a minimum of Mac OS X 10.3.5 if you get the original bundled discs.
The Intel CPU can run Windows natively via Virtualization, does not have any Classic environment for old Mac OS 9 software. All Intel iMacs with at least 1 GB of RAM can be upgraded to 10.6.4 but no Intel iMac can run any Mac OS less than 10.4.4.
Regardless of the Mac, the minimum OS that was available at its release is the minimum it will run.

OK, OSX can read that but not write, but...

You could format that HDD as Fat32/MS-DOS, but you'd be limited to 4 GB Filesizes.

  • Want to buy a used G5

I'm looking to buy a used G5. Are there any models with inherent problems I should avoid?

    Hi MichaelMac 1,
I'm wery please with my Late 2005 Quad-core. Never had any issues with the hardware so far. Except a purchased 'broken in the box' disk for WD, but that's not apple hardware.
At work I've also a Quad, the only thing I've noticed on heavy use is that my 2 cinema displays 23" tend to 'burn in' (when I look close I still can read my mails from a while ago) (if this would be also in your secondhand deal)
If You 're buy second hand check the S/N number for stolen mac's. (In Europe: http://tweedehandsmac.nl/ or macfreak.org)
    Good luck in your search,
    Mr. Oizo

  • I want to buy a used 1st gen ipad,

will the new apps and OS be supported??  I don't want to buy it and can't use it!

The original iPad can only run iOS 5.1.1 or earlier. Consequently, quite a few apps will not run on it.
You don't mention the source you intent to use, but IMHO you would be much better off buying a refurbished iPad from Apple than one on the open market.

  • Leopard not wanting to install on MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo?

I want to bump up to Leopard on my two main computers (MacBook Pro Intel, and a tower, also Intel)... but as I'm using them 24/7 on projects I dare not have problems with ... I don't want any down time getting Leopard to run seamlessly on those systems.
To this end, I 'borrowed' the Leopard disks from my son, for whom I just got a new iMac ... and was going to try it out on my spare (no critical projects) laptop (MacBook Pro Intel). At the beginning of the install the pop-up tells me it can't 'install Leopard on this computer'.
Could this just be some new security device to inhibit pirating? Related specifically to new iMacs? Or am I going to have problems when I try to install the Leopard I was about to buy to upgrade all my computers?
    All ears,
    B.

FYI, an OS installer doesn't just blindly install all the OS components it contains; among other things it runs "pre-flight" & "post-flight" scripts to make sure the Mac's hardware is compatible with that version of the OS, to assemble some of the pieces (like preference files) on-the-fly prior to installing them, & to initialize & clean up some of the items placed on the drive during the installation process.
If it helps, think of it as little mechanized factory that builds customized, turnkey products based on the measurements & specifications it obtains from the buyer.
The retail version of the OS contains the generalized version of this factory; the OEM disk sets do not, since they are intended for one model only.
So, if you want to "test drive" the OS, do it on your son's Mac. You won't be violating the license terms & your test will be much more indicative of what you will see with the OS properly installed on your Macs.

  • Buying a iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo processor for CS2 & CS3?

I have been a PC and MAC person for many years, but would like to move to one platform, MAC.
I am a photographer that has been using a XP x64 PRO box (AMD 64 3800+, 4GB DDR Ram, Dual Monitors) for a couple years in my photography sorting and light editing and am wondering if an Intel iMac 24 could handle my daily tasks; they are as follows: These are all RAW files from a Nikon D2x or D200.
    1. Loading the daily shots from a shoot using a card/media reader
    2. Open and make the picks within Bridge
    3. Open keeps in Camera RAW, I make 98% of my adjustments in Camera RAW.
    4. Then open the ones that need alittle more tweaking into CS2 as 16bit, to make very minor corrections such as dodge and burn or a B&W conversion using channels; save as PSD/DNG.
    5. I may print some of these to and Epson 1280.
Since I do not use any major filters and do very little heavy loading in CS2, will a iMac 24 handle this type of work.
    Regards,
    Johnny Kurtz

Well, thank you to all who responded.
I ordered my iMac 24 and it should have been here today, but snow has slowed my delivery to Utah, luckily it is coming new from the East Bay of San Francisco and will be here tomorrow.
I went with a 24" iMac 2.16 Intel Dual Core 2/2G RAM/500 G HD/Nvidia 7600GT256, and will be running dual monitor via the mini DVI port. I am also taking 3 SATA II drives from my PC and running them externally, firewire & USB. I am watching eBay and other sources for the 2GB DDR chip so I will have 3GB DDR soon.
I will run my PC version of CS2 until CS3 ships and will do a cross-upgrade to the Mac version then, also looking at Lightroom for culling the herd of photographs. I don't like the reviews and Apple Discussions about Aperture, maybe version 2.0.
    Cheers,
    Johnny

  • I want to buy a used ipad, which are T Mobile 4g LTE compatible?  How do I know without doing live test?

I want to test ipads to see if they meet my needs over laptops.
So I will buy a Mini and an Regular to try to feel they out as to handling, reading, searching,
I travel abroad for extended time periods  I travel light, backpack, one change of cloths, electronics,
I used only basic computer apps, I like large print,   Can I get by is ipad mini?,  I like the size for carrying.
Where is the best bang for the buck,  I don't need latest technology, speed,   just get me point a to B, I have
plenty of time.   I like simplicity.

i recently upgraded from an ipad mini to the ipad air 2 and i love the ipad air 2. there is a big screen and i can read things easily. I felt the mini was to small. even though the ipad comes with a big price tag, i feel it is worth it for how fast it is. i get great data speeds but i am also on AT&T.

  • I want to buy and use an iPad in the USA whilst on holiday, will it work still if I take it back to the UK?

I can't seem to find a discussion that says 'I bought my iPad and used it in the USA' as this is what I want to do and then take it back with me when I go back to England.
    Many thanks in advance,
    James

The iPad is probably higher than your personal allowance
if so VAT and and duty is payable depending on how long you are in US
If you do't declare the iPad and get caught ,not worth thinking about
in terms of cost and possible penalties
Google personal allowance to find out details from HMC&E

  • Want to buy IPOD for G4 using Panther and the older USB port

I want to buy a used IPOD. I have the 800 megahertz G4 with Panther 10.39 and I guess that older USB port. I hear is isn't USB 2.0. Which Ipod should I buy that will work?
I want an ipod but I don't want to buy a brand new computer for a few months!
    Thank you very kindly,
    Tom in Arizona

Thanks very much. The only one that seems to be a good match is Ipod Shuffle. There remains, however, one problem. Its corresponding version of Itunes is 4.7.1, and I have 7.4.2. Is it possible to get version 4.7.1 and repopulate it with my songs so that I can use Ipod Shuffle? This would appear to be a real problem.
    Gracias,
    Tomás
PS: I'm assuming this old macitosh does not have the version 2 USB port. Here's what my system profile lists:
    USB Bus:
    Vendor Name: Apple Computer, Inc.
    Product ID: 32773 ($8005)
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Bus Power (mA): 500

  • Can I run Intel Core i7-3770K on Mac Pro 2010?

I want to buy Mac Pro but I don`t like ATI graphics and I don`t need server. I want it like "gaming" machine
So I will change ATI Radeon HD 5770 by NVidia GeForce GTX 670... will it work? I will install parallel desktop in Mac Pro.
And I want to put in Mac Pro Intel Core i7-3770K, will it work???
Thanks a lot for all answers.
    (Sorry for bad english)

Build a PC. You are limited by the processor socket so nothing but LGA 1366, Nehalem-Westmere. No LGA 2011, no Sandy Bridge let alone Ivy Bridge-E
Yes a GTX with 2x6-pin power cables.
You are not a Mac Pro intended customer and gaming can be done better on Windows PC.

  • What is the best camcorder for about $1000. Advise me please I want to buy

What kind of a camcorder you can advise me to buy for about $1000? Whether new, refurbished or used. The one which uses miniDv tapes.

I have used a camera service and repair shop for years. This guy used to be a highly acclaimed lead engineer in Sony's Professional Division, who now runs his own shop and performs all the maintenance, service and repair for a number of broadcasters and TV stations, as well as consumers and professionals. He gets all kinds of cameras and decks in his shop, so he has a very broad experience and sees all kinds of causes for problems.
One is often surprised of the myriad of causes for severe problems one can have with a camera that really looks in pristine condition. Stupid little things like a filter thread on the lens that is ruined, the mini mic connector, that is bent internally, moist that corroded the audio board, salt water spray that ruined the i-Link connector, worn-out drums or heads, head clogging on tape based cameras, overloaded audio connectors that cause a hiss, etc.
There can be so many small but bothersome things with a used camera that looks as if it is brand new, and are very dificult to discern. Example of a used Sony Z1. Looks superb, drum and head hours are OK and looks good. No visible damage, test shows it works without problems, but how do you find the the mic suspension has once been broken and replaced, but not with the original screws, but a size larger. On the Z1 this is a weak point. Now if you break it again and get a replacement, you find out that the original screw size does no longer fit. Minor problem, but it may require additional parts to get it back in original condition. Or you may find out that there are dead pixels on the LCD screen, or one of the sensors has been burned in by shooting an sunrise just a bit late, or the lens is slightly misaligned due to heavy force when removing a filter, etc.
A camera left in the sun in a car and getting very hot, which reduced the life span of the disk, a Monday morning hard disk that developed a number of bad sectors, a camera used at the Niagara Falls in the spray causing internal corrosion, used in the rain without a rainslicker, all these things can not be determined by a visual inspection.
I'm not saying there are no good used cameras, I'm saying you have to be very careful if you want to buy a used camera and ideally you would have a good service shop do a complete inspection of the camera and advising you whether it is worth the asking price, like one does when buying a used car.
To continue the Z1 example. I was on a sailing trip, island hopping in the Caribbean and the accessory shoe on the camera came loose, you still have 6 days before you can find a local shop if you can find one to repair it on Jost van **** or Virgin Gorda or Saba. So you try to repair it on board with limited tools and means. Nail polish and loctite were temporay solutions, but when one wants to remove the screws that were fastened with loctite on board, you have a problem. You don't see it until it is too late. Hidden limitations that a seller usually does not tell you.
Personally I prefer to save a bit longer and buy new.

  • Will intel core i7-4790 be compatable replacemetn for intel dual core pentium g620

I have a Lenovo Idea Center K330B with an Intel pentium dual core g620 2.6GHz LGA1155 processor.  I want to replace it with an Intel core i7-4790K 4.0 GHz LGA1155 processor.  Is the i7 processor compatable with my system?  In other words, will I be able to do this?  I would apprecitate it if I could get some helpful information on this.  A yes or no will do, but I'm hoping for more of an explanation than that.  Thank you for any help you can give me with this.
    TonyB

i would say no if there has not been a bios update in a while with a list of currently supported cpus i would only upgrade to ones that came out with the system, so if the fastest k330b was with an i5 760 then thats it
also the mobo you have is 1155 and that cpu is a 1150
if you do get another cpu you might need to reformat and install windows as sometime it does not go well
