Wanting to kill the tiger frustrations

I'm having a frustrating, work lossing, everything going wrong day, please understand my tone if I get rude. I'm running 10.4.3, and have had several frustrations with it. I unknowingly tried to organize and control my fonts via FontBook - and messed everything up, when I first got my ibook and was excited about Tiger. Well, in order to help salvage the disaster, as I was suggested, I erased fonts that seemed ridiculous and wasting space. This turned out not so well. So did a clean install 10.4.1 and updated to 10.4.2 at the time; however no font issues have been solved. Besides having a mess of fonts that will never be used which are not organized in (********) programs like Word 2004, I never have the same selection of fonts in other programs; ie Adobe CS, TextEdit etc. How do I get this back to ok? What program is recommended to organize fonts, like the good ole days of ATM...
Is 10.4.4 more stable? Varied programs get stuck and do not respond often enough and force quit wont fix them. I repair permissions via Disk Utility often and try to fix unknown (to me) issues with TechTool Pro 4.0.1. Please don't tell me I need to reformat the hard drive.... and reinstall. And why would re-installing fix what clean installing hasn't?!
thanks
ibook g4 1.42   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

When you say you did a Clean Install I'm guessing you mean Archive & Install.
When you do this it preserves your Home Folder and replaces the OS. Therefore, when you deleted fonts via Font Book (most were probably User fonts) you won't get them back with an Archive & Install because your Home folder wasn't touched.
Refer Dr. Smoke's article about this:

Or Kurt Langs:

EDIT: Look all the way at the bottom of Kurt's post. It should be your solution. Then read the rest later if you want.

  • How the Leopard Killed the Tiger

Today I thought I'd take my work machine (G5) and install Leopard on a second internal drive while the top drive would not be effected and continue running Tiger and all my wares. All I'd have to is hold the option key on boot and select the appropriate OS. Well it didn't quite work out that way.
The first thing I did was install Tiger on the second drive just to make sure that I could do as above. Worked great. Then I installed Leo after all of Tigers updates. Worked fine...until I attempted to restart into Tiger, on the original top drive, and all it did after the initial boot was shutdown. Tried to boot again and same thing...shutdown. Then I ran Disk Utitity/Repair Disk from my Tiger disk and it said that there were serious errors ("Keys out of order. Rebuilding Catalog B Tree. The Volume XXXX could not be repaired". Why I wondered, I never touched that drive. How did installing on one drive affect the other?
Took the second drive (Leo) out and still have the same problem. Zapped the PRAM, nada. I hope an updated, new copy (42) of DW can fix things.
BTW, The only option I have available in DU is to reformat the drive. The drive is not available to do a fresh system install.
Any other suggestions other than DW?
    Thanks for any help

Ran DW this morning. The first attempt failed when the system locked up, so I gave it another try and then she fixed lots of errors:
    DiskWarrior Report:
    • All errors in the directory structure such as tree depth, header node, map nodes, node size, node counts, node links, indexes and more have been repaired.
    • 9 files had to be recovered. The files may have been lost or thrown away. You must inspect the files to determine the extent of any damage. You must also determine whether the files should be discarded.
    • 2 files had a directory entry with an incorrect flag that was repaired.
    • 2 files had an ID that was repaired.
    • 18 files had a directory entry with an incorrect text encoding value that was repaired.
    • 1 file had a directory entry with an incorrect starting allocation value that was repaired. You must inspect the file to determine the extent of any damage. The detailed view of this report lists the file.
    • 3 files had a duplicate name that was repaired.
    • 1 file had an incorrect actual size that was repaired.
    • 2 files had an incorrect key that was repaired.
    • 1 file had to be moved to the "Damaged Items" folder.
    • 5 folders had an incorrect item count that was repaired.
    • 2 folders had a directory entry with an incorrect custom icon flag that was repaired.
    • 2 files/folders had to be moved to the "Rescued Items" folder.
    • Incorrect values in the Volume Information were repaired.
    • Critical values in the Volume Information were incorrect and were repaired.
    Disk Information:

So I'm up and running great as far as I can tell. All I can say is this is the hardest I've been down where DW has truly come to the rescue. Keep in mind that my system wouldn't even boot. I'll be ordering my update this week. I do not work for Alsoft, so don't consider this spam.

  • How to kill the process running on specific port in Solaris 10

    Hi
As I want to kill the proces running on port 8080 in my solaris 10 box. is there any command to do the same.
    Thanks
    Rajan

A quick google, found lots of scripts... I found the script below @ Christopher Hubbell's blog - I've modified it to pump out the command name.
---->>>>>>BUT let's just say it would be quicker to got to sunfreeware.com and download lsof.
the 'lsof -i " option will give you the process id, which you can use kill _pid_ to kill the id.
Christopher's modded script (my edits in bold):
    #!/bin/sh
    if [ `/usr/xpg4/bin/id -u` -ne 0 ]; then
echo "ERROR: This script must run as root to access pfiles command."
    exit 1
    fi
    if [ $# -eq 1 ]; then
    port=$1
    else
    printf "which port?> "
    read port
    echo "Searching for processes using port $port...";
    echo
    fi
for pid in `ps -ef -o pid | tail +2`
    do
    foundport=`/usr/proc/bin/pfiles $pid 2>&1 | grep "sockname:" | egrep "port: $port$"`
    if [ "$foundport" != "" ];
    then
    pname=`ps -ef -o pid -o comm |grep $pid| awk '{print $2}'`
    echo "process name: $pname, $foundport"
    fi
    done
    exit 0

  • What's the fastest way to kill the battery...

hello friends. i was wondering what's the fastest way to drain my macbook pro battery so i can calibrate it? i want to kill the battery not the laptop if you know what i mean. thanks.

Turn on wifi + bluetooth and turn the brightness all the way up, and if its a new mbp, turn off the automatic video card switching in energy saver. Then just play youtube videos / movies / games (anything that uses the vid card as much as possible helps) till it goes flat.

    I agree.
It was very useful to reduce everything to small and quickly scan down looking for missing artwork.
Particularly useful when I only connect to the machine with iTunes via screen sharing, so everything can be a bit slower to scroll through at times.
In fact, itunes 11 when used purely as a server for Apple TV etc is a downgrade in usability IMO, as they've got rid of some of the useful views that helped me manage my library remotely.

  • Not rally a question, just wanted to share my absolute frustration with the update of iTunes...this is, without a shadow of a doubt THE WORST application i have EVER used, Mac or PC! And that's saying something with the amount of PC dross that's out there

Pull down View > Show Sidebar. This will give you back the same functionality of iTunes 10.x.x.

  • Many, many times in a session, I get this: Mozilla Firefox (Not Responding). Frustration is setting in when I have to kill the computer, and start all over again. Anger is beginning a slow burn, too.

Since the latest version (don't even ask me) was downloaded and installed, many times in a session when I am browsing the net, or opening a text document or a spreadsheet, flipping back and forth, I'll have to stop and sit for an indeterminate amount of time because up on the header, I'll get the message Mozilla Firefox (Not Responding). When looking down toward the front of the laptop, I note the hard drive is going full bore, whole hog, whatever you want to call it. Sometimes after repeated hitting the "enter" key, the program will catch up, and begin functioning again. Other times, because the program is stuck, the laptop will overheat, causing me to manually shut down, wait a while while the hard drive cools, then restarting. When I have to manually kill the session, I cannot, repeat CANNOT get the machine shutdown programs to work.
What the hell is wrong with Firefox with this crap?

Hello jesterabk, '''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

I want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard on my 2008 MacPro. How do I avoid problems with the upgrade process?

#1 Do a complete bootable backup of your drive before upgrading. That way should anything happen you can revert back to the start and try again.
Make sure you meet Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575

Good Morning! As a feedback, I still prefer the physical purchase instead of downloads. It suppose to be easier and faster and always end up being slower, annoying and frustrating. I just want to download the software Mountain Lion that I have purchased. Redeem is a pain. How do I redeem my purchase without ERROR or COULD NOT RECOGNISE , the code that you have sent to me!!!

It appears PowerMacs (your profile) aren't supported.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2,1 or higher
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Xserve (Early 2009) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space

  • HT1222 The new iOS 7 update is killing the battery in my iPad. I have checked online and taken measure indicted to help this - but the battery is dead within hours. I am very frustrated. Can I undo this update??

The new software update - iOS 7.0.2 is killing the battery in my iPad. I have searched online and taken the recommended measures to decrease battery use, but within hours my iPad is completely dead. It would take days to kill the battery before this update. I am very frustrated. Can I undo this update???

This typically happens when some apps on the phone were interrupted by the upgrade. When it comes back up the app tries to resume and can not. You have to find and kill that app(s).
Do you have an Exchange account?
That is usually the culprit. Go into Settings and turn off all of the toggles for the Exchange account. Then reset the phone (hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons and don’t let go until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears). When the phone powers back on, turn the toggles back on.
Do the same for all mail accounts if you don't have Exchange or that doesn't resolve the issue.
If it is not Exchange/Mail then it could be another app(s).
With iOS 7 you can control what apps run in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. This will list all of the apps that can run in background. Turn them all off and restart. If this fixes the problem turn on a few at a time until you find the one causing the trouble.

  • I get a pop up window when leaving a site asking if I am sure I want to leave, the only way to get out is kill Firefox in task mgr but FF restarts the lockup

On some sites I get a pop up window asking if I am sure I want to leave the site. The only option is to click on the pop up, nothing else works you cannot use back or even shutdown FF. I have to shut down with task manager, but when I restart FF it goes back to the locked up page.

If you want to change how Firefox starts up after a crash, you have the option to have Firefox show a list of windows and tabs. Then you can deselect the tab you do not want opened again. Here's how to change the setting:
    (A) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (B) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''sess''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (C) Double-click the '''browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes''' preference and enter 0 (that's a zero) and click OK.
Note: Please don't customize any other sessionstore preferences to zero, or you might lose the ability to recover your closed windows and tabs.

  • Is rosetta killing the shadows of the whole system?

is rosetta killing the shadows of the whole system?
when i start an adobe app which needs rosette (photoshop, indesign, illustrator .. all CS2), all shadows of all windows (finder, mail .. every dropped shadow of any app in the whole system) are broken (ugly black lines instead of the smooth shadows).
i have to restart the macbook to solve this problem. very anoing.
ms office is doing well .. no such problem.

I'm having the drop-shadow problem, too (it's been showing up on my MacBook since the machine arrived three days ago); for those who haven't seen it, here's a screen capture.
But for me, it doesn't appear to be a Rosetta issue. I can sometimes use Rosetta apps (like Eudora) for hours without it happening, and when it does happen for me, it's often just on one or two windows, in apps like Terminal and Finder.
I called Apple Support yesterday; they said to take it in to a Genius bar. I did that today; the Geniuses on duty (who were very friendly and polite) said they'd never seen anything like it. One of them recommended re-seating the RAM (I haven't done that yet, but will shortly), and if that didn't work, doing an archive-and-install. Which I can do, but it's a little frustrating; this happened right out of the box (modulo my files and apps that got copied over from my PBG4, which of course didn't have this problem), so I don't think reinstalling the OS is going to help. But I suppose it's worth a try. (The Genius offered to do the reinstall for me, of course, but I hadn't quite backed up everything so I declined.)
Anyway, I'm posting 'cause (a) I wanted to let you know you're not alone, (b) I wanted to weigh in on the Rosetta aspect, and (c) I wanted to point people to the screen snap in case they haven't seen it.
I suppose I may as well point to my full journal entry for more details.

  • Getting a larger hard drive...and want to upgrade to Tiger...help!

    Hello everyone!
I have a dualie MDD with the stock 60 gig hard drive that I want to upgrade. I'd like a 200 or 250 gig hard drive.
Once I have the new hard drive installed, I'd like to upgrade to Tiger. But I'm lost as to how this process works. I know I'd need to clone my current OS, but then how do I clone it to the new drive once it's installed?
    Would I:
    1) Back my system up onto CD/DVDs/external drive/whatever
    2) Create clone of system using CCC or Disk Utilities
    3) Install new drive??
    4) ???
    5) Upgrade to Tiger??
I'm not sure if two drives running so close to each other inside the hard drive cage is a wise move considering how hot the inside of an MDD gets, so I may remove the 60 once everything is up and running.
So how do I go about this the right way? Detailed instructions would be very appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi, Pat!
First of all, get the new drive and install it. (Insure you buy an ATA drive and not a SATA drive.) If you need any assistance with installing, configuring, or initializing the drive, please post back.
In the interim, check for updates to your third-party apps to make sure that they will all be up-to-date and Tiger-compatible. Download a free copy of Superduper! or CarbonCopyCloner to later clone your startup drive. You can also use Disk Utility's Restore option for cloning, if you'd rather do so.
Next, you have a decision to make about the Tiger install. You can either upgrade it from Panther on your current drive, or do a fresh install of Tiger and use the Setup Assistant to incorporate your data from the Panther volume. I prefer and would recommend the latter as a much "cleaner" way of upgrading, leaving less "baggage" from the older OS. I would install Tiger directly to the new drive, which precludes the immediate need to clone anything while still leaving the original startup drive and system intact. If you'd rather do the upgrade install, then you should clone the Panther volume to the new drive, check the clone to insure it's okay, and install Tiger over Panther onto one drive or the other.
After installing Tiger, doing the software updates, moving your user files, apps etc. to the Tiger volume, you can run and test it for a week or so to insure all is well and that you have everything you need from the Panther drive. Once you're satisfied, you can then either retain the Panther volume as-is, using it as an alternate startup drive, or (preferably) you can instead erase it, zero it, and clone a copy of your Tiger volume to it as a backup and alternate startup drive.
Feel free to post back with any questions or concerns and one or more of the members will gladly address them.
