Wanting to "normalize" all of my songs in my iTunes...

I have just picked up a new mp3 player.
Before I start to add the rest of my vast music collection, I want to "normalize" my current Library.
I have just picked up a new WDig Ext 2TB Hard Drive, and have set my iTunes to save to and read from the Esternal Hard Drive.
Basically I am wanting to set my entire Music Library as the same extention and bitrate so it is as "normalized" as possible, so I have consistancy once it is all on my mp3 player.
Please Help me out - Hopefully I wont have to do anything as drastic as "Create MP3 Version" of each song.

I too own a third party mp3 player, but I do not expect Apple to support it with iTunes.  In fact, for the Sansa Clip I do find various third party scripts that make file transferring easier.  With the Cowon you can drag compatible files from the iTunes window to the device in Finder.
The option to convert files to a different format is there, and if you want to delete the originals and just keep the mp3 versions you can do that.  It's a pity, though, that your player apparently doesn't support the better quality AAC/mp4 which even many older players support.  The thing does play WMA which is a Windows proprietary format. It only accepts WMV, AVI, and ASF video formats which are all Windows-specific (you can get AVI to play on Macs using third party support). This thing was clearly designed to work with Windows and isn't even making a step towards playing more Mac-standard formats such as AAC and pure mp4 audio and video.  Frankly, it's in the same class as my old RCA mp3 player.  Amazon reviews don't rate it highly, and my RCA player has almost completely dropped off the radar completely (try finding it anywhwere on the web).  Pretty much the only good thing the top rated review has to say about it is you can get files on and off it without additional software.

You don't say whether you are on PC or Mac. For Mac there are these two programs which might help (I havn't tried either) :
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ipod_itunes/songsergeant.html
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ipod_itunes/idupe.html
There are probably similar programs for PCs, but I don't know what they are. On a PC you can hold the shift key and do File > Display Exact Duplicates (without the shift they may not be exact matches) - if one of each duplicate pair has the same date added then you can sort by that and then delete those with (or without) that date.

  • I just got my ipod from my dad and he has all of his songs on there from his mac, and so now he gave the ipod to me and i want to put all of the songs on MY computer onto my new ipod and take all of the songs of that my dad originally had.

When you connect the iPod to your computer and go to the Music tab to select which music you want to sync, iTunes will pop up a dialogue box that if you sync your music it will replace the music that is already on the iPod.
Since that sounds like what you want to do, just click ok and then sync.

I lost my iPod Nano. Can I retrieve all of the songs in my iTunes library, or just the ones I bought through the iTunes store?

The "bar" at the bottom does not say anything about all of your songs being on the iPod.  It just shows you how much of its storage capacity is being used, based on what is on the iPod.
If you see "On This iPod," that means the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible.  This is easier to describe with the sidebar visible, so from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
Select the iPod in the sidebar, under DEVICES.  There is a bar of buttons near the top, starting with Summary.  Click on Music next to Summary.  This is the iPod's Music screen, where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the iPod.
Check the box for Sync Music.  You can choose to sync Entire music library, if (?) your iTunes music library fits on the iPod.  With this setting, your entire iTunes music library syncs to the iPod, and new songs get synced automatically.  A 7th gen iPod nano is 16GB, so your iTunes music library would have to be less than 16GB (not counting non-music content on the iPod).  Otherwise, you can choose to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Then, select (checkmark) the playlists, artists, albums, and/or genres you want on the iPod from the lists below.  If you want newly added songs to sync to the iPod, they must be part of your selection.  For example, you can add them to a playlist that you have selected for syncing to the iPod.
When you click Apply, the songs from your selection sync to the iPod.  Going forward, changes to your iTunes library (based on your settings on the iPod's Music screen) sync automatically to the iPod, the next time it is connected (or when you click Sync).

These are two possible approaches that should work to move the existing library to the new laptop.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase are reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your library or a backup of it then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • How do I put all my iPod songs into my iTunes library?

I got my iPod in October, and at the time I didn't own a computer. I used my dad's computer to put songs from my CDs onto my iPod.
Today I finally bought my own laptop, a Mac iBook. I'm trying to load all my iPod songs into my iTunes, but I can't figure out how.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hello Colleen,
The transfer of music is designed to be one way by default - from iTunes to iPod. However, there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod. This is just a selection but I would recommend Senuti, I have used it myself and it's very user friendly.
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions

Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these and pick one you are happy with, they are generally quite straightforward.

Restore from backup if you have one.
You can also transfer stuff from your iPod if you have one:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11857427#11857427
If you are in the US or Canada you can download purchased music from the Purchased link in the iTunes store.
Otherwise if the disk drive is OK in your Old PC you can remove it and put it in a USB drive enclosure and then use it as an external disk on your new PC, then you copy the muisc from there.

  • I have a ipad with all of my songs on it, my old computer recently shut down and now i want to download all of my songs on my ipad to my new itunes. how can i do this without erasing all of my music?

my computer recently shut down and all of my itunes was lost.  My ipad still has all of my songs on it. How can i download all of my music onto my new itunes. would i need a different acount?

    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • All of my songs in my iTunes but two disappeared as well as all my playlists. How do it get it all back??

I just turned my computer on from being gone for a week and having it completely shut down. I brought my iTunes up and ordered some songs from the iTunes store and was playing them and the computer froze. I had to force it to shut down and restart. When I brought iTunes back up I only have two songs listed and no play list when previously i had about 5,000 and at least 30 play lists. Help!!

    Do you:
To download previous purchases on a computer, your computer must be authorized for the Apple ID that was used for the original purchase. For more information about iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization see, this article.
Also, you need iTunes 10.3 or later on the computer.

  • My computer broke and I bought a new one, installed i tunes and synced my I phone but it only synced my purchased songs(100) and I still have 400 songs on my I Phone, when I try to re sync it wants to erase all the 400 songs on my device

My Computer broke and I bought a new one, re installed I tunes and synced my I Phone 4 but it only transfered 100 purchased songs into the library and I still have 400 songs on my I Phone, but when i try to re sync it wants to erase the 400 songs on my device and replace with the 100 songs in my library. I have authorized this computer with this device but I can't deauthorize the old computer because it's boken. I emailed tech support but they told me to manually transfer the files but it only transfers from the library to the device, and I need to transfer from the device to the library.

The music sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The only exception is itunes purchases. Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases
The iphone is not a backup device.
Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • My Ipod will not transfer all of its songs to purchased Itunes song transfer.  My last pv crashed, I dont have access to it any more.  I want my library back on Itunes.  ANy help?

My Ipod will not transfer songs.  my old PC crashed and could not recover anything from it.  When I purchased my new Dell, when I loaded Itunes back on to it my content library will only transfer over purchased Itune songs.  I have tons of songs I downloaded from the old "CD" onto my new Itunes account from my Ipod.  Any help?

so then technically I can't transfer the songs off my ipod to my itunes library?  since it is one 1 transfer from pc to ipod...correct?  So when I synch my ipod the warning screen comes up and says "there are content not in the library, erase and synch library to Itunes, only purchased songs can transfer."   Can I leave the songs on my ipod and when I purchase new songs to itunes I can still transfer those correct?  while having the others on there that wont transfer?
