Wanting to reinstall, need some info

I got my MacBook Pro about a year ago, and I've noticed that it's slowed down a bit ever since I got it. I want to reinstall the OS to see if it will speed things up, and want to keep all my files and applications. Is the "Archive and Install" option the best way to go about this? Also, any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
MacBook Pro (17-inch)   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Before going through the effort of an Archive and Install read the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

Performing basic maintenance may resolve your problem. If not then you can try the Archive and Install:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • New Member wanting to buy but needs some info..

Hello all, I am new to this forum.
I have found this forum in the search of information regarding these Wind Top pc's.
Information is fairly thin on the net so I thought it best to join this forum and ask my questions here where I am sure I will get acurate answers.
I have searched the threads here in but still need some clarification.
    My scenario is as follows:
I want to use one of these AIO's mainly as a music and music video jukebox.
Tv tuner, either built in or usb external would be good also.
Sound output is to a set of active Audioengine A5 2.0 speakers.
Ive been checking out a few other  brands like:
Asus, Shuttle, HP, Lenovo and Gateway, though I like the look of the MSI ones the best.
16 inch is realistically too small, 20 inch is just about right and 22 inch upwards may be a little big and probably a little to much like a fully fledged pc, which may be a little much for what I need?
It will be placed in my Kitchen/Dining/Sitting room. Size is 8m x 6m.
I dont really want to spend a fortune, maybe below a $1000 if possibe but definately not to much above $1000. I am in Australia, Tasmania actually and viewing/demoing is fairly non existant.
The MSI 2020 or 2220 etc is probably at the top of my list.
It looks similar to a large picture/photo frame as apposed to a fully fledged computer.
I have attached my Audioengine A5's to my dell 15" laptop, T6400 or 2.0 gig core 2 cpu, 3 gig ram and Radeon HD4570 gfx.
Installed 80 gig of music and when starting/browsing windows media center for music, it does OK but I can see its not as quick as I would like it to be.
Therefore what worries me is trying to work out how one of these lower specked MSI wind top touchscreens will perform.
Can anyone please share their thoughts or experience especially regarding the browsing and playing of a music mp3 collection of reasonable size eg 80 gig etc.
    Thanks in advance

It's probably a good idea to check out reviews as that will give a good idea of whether it meets your needs. I don't own a Wind Top so can't comment on what it's like to use.
MSI Wind Top AE2220 review: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/review/1594404/msi-wind-top-ae2220
You'll obviously want better performance than your laptop, which would rule out the Wind Top AE2020, since that has an Pentium T4500 Dual-Core processor, which is slower than the Core 2 Duo T6400. The Wind Top AE2220 would be the better choice of the two since it can come with the Core 2 Duo T6600 processor.

  • Need some info on BI CONT 7.x

    Hi,
I need some clarification on BI Content ADD ON 7.x.
Though new versions are getting released day by day with good new add on modules, but do we have BI Content which has complete DTP's and Transformations for Logistics and FI module.
I hope it might be confusing, i will come some other way around.
with bi content 3.5 whenever we activate a cube/ODS using business content in RSA1 by taking in dataflow before it will activate cube/ods, update rules/infosource etc.., in the same way if i activate LO or FI modules cubes or DSO using BI content 7.x can i get Transformation,DTP's get activated.
for your information till now i have not used Bi content 7.x.
I could gain some knowledge from your end.
    thanks
    Prashanth.

The business content is still not in 7.0 dataflow. So you need to install the 3.x objects and migrate them to 7.0 And as far as the 7.x infosources, if you want u may install them and use for the transformations (while converting the transfer rules). Anyway the system wil prompt you to use a existing 7.0 infsource or conver the existing 3.x infosource. And infosource is not mandatory as of 7.0 dataflow.
    Thanks.

  • I Need some info about interfacing the PC or laptop to Spectrum analyzer using Labview

we need to control  the spectrum analyzer using an interface   that will    be   developed  using  Labview  .
Spectrum analyzer will be connected to tha PC using RS 232C and the waveform observed will be seen in the PC interface of spectrum analyzer.
Pls send some info regarding dis.

Using a spectrum analyzer with LabVIEW is a pretty common application, my first program 15 years ago did this. What we need to know to help you though is what model spectrum analyzer are you planning on using? Most of the ones I'm familiar with use the GPIB interface rather than RS232, but that isn't a major issue, the spectrum analyzers command set is the important one. There are a lot of LabVIEW drivers available for a larger number of analyzers, here on the National Instruments' site. Although most use the GPIB interface (or ethernet), they can be used as a starting point to develop an RS232 driver if one isn't available, assuming that there is a driver for the model that you have, or a closely related one (manufacturers frequently use similar command sets within a model type).
So, what type analyzer are you using, and what types of things are you planning on doing with it?

First RAID array I would very much appreciate any help given.

    Hi!
Looking at some info on Google and Microsoft site, I cannot find the BC error code, only the error code ending with B. It indicates an error with the boot device. It can be caused by several things.
Check that you are using the correct device drivers to install Windows
Also, check the installation CD. It could be that the disk was damaged and that you are missing a crucial file because of that
You can also try installing Windows again and choose to recover the previous installation.
If this all does not help, try installing Windows on a single HDD (no raid) to see if that will work.

  • Satellite Pro A10 - need some info about RAM upgrade

    Dear Fourm members
In regard to the above machine : please can anyone advise :- how many memory slots does it have.
I think it is two but am not sure.
Also what max size memory module can we have in this laptop please.
If it is 2 @ 1gb per module, then we would have a total of 2gb.
Is the hard drive on this machine a standard laptop hard drive. Can I take the small 20gb one out and replace it with a larger one. eg 120 gb etc
Thank you so much for your help.
    Ian

On satellite Pro A10 two memory slots are available. Notebook can handle with 1 GB RAM and you can use two compatible PC2100 512MB (PA3164U-1M51) modules.
This old machine uses 2,5 HDD with old IDE connector. I found some info that it was delivered with 20GB, 30GB and 40GB HDDs. I think you can upgrade it with HDD up to 100 GB but just be sure it has the same HDD connector.
If you have more questions you are welcome.
For more info post exact model number please.

  • I need some info about the Document Class.

    Hi,
I need some information about the Document Class, can anybody
tell me where I can find it.
    thanks

    Emad Zedan,
    > I need some information about the Document Class, can
    > anybody tell me where I can find it.
The concept of the document class was introduced in Flash
    CS3. What it
does is allow you to optionally associate a custom AS3 class
    with your FLA
in the Flash authoring tool. Your document class effectively
    *becomes* the
main timeline. This is your chance to influence the
    underlying behavior of
the MovieClip or Sprite instance that serves as the
    foundation for your SWF.
If you don't associate a custom document class with your
    FLA, the FLA is
associated automatically with a default document class called
    MainTimeline,
    which extends MovieClip.

  • Need some info about Equium A60

    Hi,
I am looking to upgrade RAM on my laptop which is a Equium A60 (PSA67E-001004NO). I need to know what speed my motherboard supports... I posted a question some time back and got the impression that my laptop can take 533mhz but I enquired other places and got the idea that my laptop supports 333mhz. I need to know the correct value my motherboard supports. Whether its 333mhz or up over..
One thing more I need to know is there any way one can check for the configuration that laptop has, because there is nothing about this Equium on the net or Toshiba site...
I remember to see a page on which all hardware and preinstalled software details of Equium A60 PSA67E-001004NO were on the net but I fail to remember where I saw it..
Can someone help in any way?

    Hi
Your notebook has 256MB internal memory and just one slot is available for memory expansion. I have found info that your unit can handle with 1280MB max.
    The compatible memory modules are:
    PC2700 256MB (PA3311U-1M25)
    PC2700 512MB (PA3312U-1M51)
    PC2700 1024MB (PA3313U-1M1G)
If you want check part numbers on Google and you will find out all info about those modules. I have no time now to check it for you.

  • Need some info about getting started with the GE70 2PC Apache

    Hi guys!
I'm about to getting the new GE70 2PC Apache gaming notebook from MSI and since I'm really putting alot of money in this I really wanna handle it gently :p So I got some questions about this, since It'll be the first time I'd but a gaming notebook.
    1) 1st of all, what do I do when I've first started the laptop? Do I place in the CD and install all the newest drivers from that CD? Afterwards install an anti virus and then I should be good to go?
    2) I heard the Haswell i7 processors from Intel produce a hell of a lot heat. When I turn on turbo fan and turbo boost and I reach temperatures of around 90°C, would it harm the hardware of my laptop? Could any damage take place? Or would my processor/graphic card have a shorter life expectancy?
    3) The graphic card would be the GTX 850m. Now I'm wondering, is on this particular laptop -> (MSI-ge70-2pc-019be-apache-azerty), is the graphic card the DDR3 version or the GDDR5 version? Because I heard even the GTX 765m can outperform the 850m DDR3. But I also heard that the GDDR5 version of this graphic card is noticeably better than the 765M graphic card.
4)Is it wise to keep the processor going on turbo boost (3,4 Ghz) forever?
    5) Will I have internet problems? I heard alot of people having internet problems with the killer lan drivers lately..
    6) What laptop do you think I should pick in overall? The 2PC Apache version or the GE70 2OE version (the one without SSD) ?
    8) My Brother has the GE70 2OE which has the 765m graphics card, but he only has around 60 fps when he's playing League Of Legends, and LoL isn't the most demanding game right.. The FPS sometimes even drops to 40 (even when he's ALONE with no one around him). It feels like his FPS is capped at 60? Because most of the time it's just 60. But when I look at the settings I saw the FPS is uncapped.. I believe with this graphics card he must atleast achieve a constant 70-80 fps on this game right? Might something be wrong in the settings of the graphics card?
    7) Is there anything I should know before I start gaming on this laptop? (something I should do to have best performance or something..?)
    Grtz

    Well...
    1. When you get the laptop, use MSI Burn Recovery and make the backup disks (I prefer DVD's myself...). This way if something happens, you can reinstall all the software like you just bought it.
    2. Haswell does produce quite a bit of heat. As long as you don't get much higher than 90C you should be ok. If you're getting into the high 90's or even 100C range, you probably need to replace the heatsink compound. MSI has had a number of issues with that aspect on notebooks. It is easily done though.
    3. The only way to really answer that question is probably to contact MSI about it.  >>How to contact MSI.<<
    4. Turbo boost isn't really user controlled. I wouldn't worry about it.
    5. You might have issues. I'm honestly  not too sure. I know most people haven't had issues recently, but that's all relative. The drivers seem to be working rather well right now to be honest.
    6. Depends what you want and what is available. Maybe the GE70 20E + buy an SSD will be cheaper than just buying the Apache version. I don't really know, but you could always look into it.
    8. The 765M is a decent card....but remember, it's NOT the same as a 760 on a desktop. It's roughly equivalent to a 750 in the desktop world. That's not a bad card by any means, but you aren't going to be able to get 60+ FPS at 1920x1080 in many games. LOL is rather demanding as a game though to be perfectly honest. (throwing my personal opinion in on this, I always buy the highest end item I can in this case, because you won't be able to get any better really in the end until the next laptop comes out).
    7. I would setup all your games in the NVidia control panel to use the NVidia high performance graphics processor. That way there is no confusion and it will use the right video card.
You don't really need to update drivers UNLESS you're having an issue (like BSoD's or game freezes or something similar).
The MSI customer service in the EU really seems to be hit or miss. Some people seem to get good service, some people get really crappy service. I'm honestly not sure what the problem is over there. =/

  • Need some info about screen type for Satellite C50

    Hi,
Was wondering if someone could help clear up what the situation is regarding matte and glossy screens on the C50 series. Ideally which particular model numbers mean I would get a matte screen ? and also ideally from Amazon UK as an example in terms of product links.

What you need is an 15.6 wide screen (13.6" x 7.6") display with an 40 pin LED socket
The part number isnt known to me and I think that such info would not be very useful since the part numbers are Toshiba internal part numbers.
If you want to purchase an display from independent dealer, search in google for SATELLITE C50-A 15.6 wide screen matte
I found some online dealers providing such part but dont want to post the link since I dont want to make an promotion.
However, you can also get all compatible parts from local Toshiba authorized service providers

  • Need some info on general question

    Hello everybody!
This question for those who already works as a Java professional. I just don't have a clear picture of how can you apply java programming language in real working environment, in theory I can imagine, but I need a solid understanding so that I would spend all the time moving in right direction. Do they use Java for writing some applications for some, let's say, financial institutions. I can write simple application which will connect to some RDBMS (SQLServer,Oracle, whatever you have) and perform extracting, changing, deleting information, but I can do all this stuff only on my user computer, I am just college student. How do you implement this in real environment, do you have first to install Java Runtime Environment on all user computers and install those java applications which will be working with database? What about middle-tier concept, what this all about? I happend to have interview in one company but I failed to answer on middle-tier topic. As I understand it's better to change some procedure in one place than changing apps on all user computers, how you deal whith this, this is so far not clear for me. I have never seen how users launch their apps in financial institutions (exe. files - popular question on this forum), how does this system works, or may be they use for this purpose different language like C++. What about internet, they say java was created whith internet in mind... Oh my god, I have so many questions on how you can use Java in real world, not just for fun. Hope somebody can explain it to me in plain English.
    Thanks in advance.

Here is a real world example (its a project I've been working on for about a year).
Its a 3-tier client server system. This means there are 3 parts of the system:
    1. SQL Server database on a remote server
    2. Middleware java application running on the server
    3. psion netBook clients (handheld devices) running a Java application
The actual system itself is used for remotely capturing dental information on the netBooks. At the end of the day the user can dial-up to the server where the database resides and update the database with info captured on the netBook. The user can also download a group of patients from the server to the netBook client.
The purpose of having a middle tier (or middleware), is so that any server-side changes will not impact on the client side, and vice versa (at least thats always been my understanding).
To create this architecture I used the JDBC API (for database processing, middle tier), and the RMI API (for networking, middle tier and client tier). Alternatively I could have used CORBA instead of RMI.
I beleive (although I'm no expert on this), that servlets can be used to create a similar kind of thing through a web interface (i.e. a database on the web server can be updated through a web page). Hopefully someone can confirm this for you.
And of course there are applets, that are simply java appications running on a web browser.
I would imagine that the majority of industry work done in Java is with client server apps either with servlets (web) or a backend on a server somewhere.
If anyone would like to correct me please do...think I've got most of this right.

  • Need some info before buying a 8800 GT for 1st gen Mac Pro.

Ok, I'm thinking about buying a 8800 GT for my Quad Core 2.66 but, I have a few questions.
    1. Will it run under Windows XP 64-Bit
    2. I want it for the pro apps (Final Cut Studio 2) but i've been hearing other video cards run those progs better. Is that true? if so which card should I get.
That's really it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You will find a recent user report here.
You will need to get the requisite drivers from NVidia to install in Windows. If you do some searching you will find numerous discussions about the 8800 GT and its not too spectacular performance with Pro Apps. You can also find reviews at Bare Feats.
