Wanting to retrograde to Snow Leopard

I have been very happy with my iMac for 3 years and recently upgraded to Snow leopard, which was a great upgrade. A month later I upgraded again to Lion because I assumed that it would give me something even better... very much not the case; I hate it.
My system is sluggish, several application are 'no longer supported' and don't work, Safari crashes regularly, Quicktime is jumpy and spends most of the time just showing a spinning beachball, the new hot corners drive me mad, sadly, I could go on.
What I want to do is go back to Snow Leopard. The problem I have is that I only have Time machine back-ups from 10 months ago, when it was just Leopard, and 2 days ago when I had Lion.
I have read how to do a disk erase and reinstall using the Snow Leopard DVD but can I actually use my recent Lion Time Machine back-up after that to return all the installed Applications, Mail, iTunes files, pictures etc, or will it also put the Lion OS back on my iMac?
Any help would be gratefully received.

You have entirely too little free space on the boot drive, for best performance it's best to have hard drives only 50% filled max and never more than 80% filled.

If you upgrade and it doesn't go right or slows the machine down you might need to erase and install, which all your programs will have to be reinstalled from original sources and files from backup.

If you can't do this, then hire a local PC/Mac specialist.
Do not upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8 on that older machine, it will slow down and you will lose all your PPC based programs.
Leave the Lions for a brand new machine with a SSD drive.

Can someone please tell me how I can downgrade from OSX Lion to Snow Leopard on my brand new 27" iMac.
I spoke to Apple over a week ago on the phone and explained that I wanted to downgrade to Snow Leopard and the chap I spoke to sold me the Snow Leopard upgrade disk and not the full installion DVD, I already own the Snow Leopard upgrade disk so now I have two copies and I can't use them to downgrade.
All I get when I insert the DVD is a message saying "you can't use this version of the application Install Mac Os X with this version of Mac OS X"...
Could someone please tell me exactly what Snow Leopard disks/ DVD I need to purchase (and where) for me to install Snow Leopard on my iMac. I have seen lots of different "versions" on eBay & Amazon with vastly differing prices but how do I know which disks I need to buy as I don't want to end up purchasing a third "Upgrade only" versionof Snow Leopard.

I've already tried all of those methods using the 10.6.3 disks I bought, they simply don't work as I posted earlier.
All that happens is the machine constantly bleeps 3 times in a row and the DVD drive stops spinning. I know booting from a DVD install disk is a slow process but no matter how long I leave it nothing happens except for the 3 bleeping sounds.
Having scoured the net and spoken to Apple themselves all information tells me these 10.6.3 disks are actually for someone upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
I have no idea why Apple sold me this version as before I ordered it I explained fully to the sales person what I was wanting to do and they had all the details of this mid 2011 iMac I have bought. So unless the sales person didn't have a clue what they were talking about then I should be able to "downgrade" to Snow Leopard on this iMac as even the specs for this model clearly state on everymac.com that it originaly shipped with OS 10.6.6 (Snow Leapard)

Word 2004 is almost 10 years old, you will not be able to upgrade beyond Snow Leopard with it. IMHO you have gotten your money's worth out of the application and need to upgrade to Office for Mac 2011, this will work just fine and read your old files just fine too. What will not run beyond SL are all PowerPC (PPC) apps such as Word 2004. You will need to update, upgrade or replace any PPC based apps you want to use. I would recommend taking a little time and check for updates to each of your apps. Then open System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler) click the Applications link on the left and then look for any PPC based apps, those are the ones that will not run. You can upgrade to SL just fine with the apps you currently have however if you want to go beyond SL (it's already 2 generations behind) you will need to update or upgrade your apps. oh sorry, I thought that was where we put the question I am on an extremely tight budget, but since I do shift work, I wanted to use the iCloud funciton to keep my calendars uptodate on my pc/mac mini/and iphone. Wish there were a way to do it for free on my snow and snow leopard OS, but sinc e I cannot, I am wondering about formatting the external harddrive (which I have to purchase). There is no disk for Lion.
You can call AppleCare and order the DVD for Snow Leopard
You will need to check which version of OS X your hardware will support.
If it can run Mountain Lion that can be purchased and installed from the App Store on 10.6.8
If it will only run Lion, you need to call AppleCare for a code to download Lion.

Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.

If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall these apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store.

Wanting to downgrade to Snow Leopard. Can you help?

I like Lion in many ways and it has some nice features, but I have been having wifi trouble, programs not working, safari acting wonky, etc. since installing Lion. Can someone give the tips, etc needed to downgrade to Snow Leopard until Lion's bugs are ironed out? Is it doable? Will it cause other problem? Is it very time consuming? Thanks!
I got into Mac's in 2006 to escape all the Windows troubles... Lion so far is giving me flashbacks. Whew!

P.S. BTW, my iPhone 4 has no wifi since uprading. I did the Lion upgrade and the iPhone 4.3.4 upgrade on the same day.

Backup ALL your Users folders manually to a external drive and disconnect, your going to be wiping the entire disk (Windows files too)
Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk that comes with your computer and second screen in just STOP.
Look at the Utilities Menu for Disk Utility.
On the left is the name of your hard drive maker, click it and Erase (format HFS+ Journaled), give it the same name as before, and click Erase...
This should wipe the drive of all three partitions (GUID, OS X and 10.7 Recovery)
When it's done, quit and install OS X 10.6. Then install all your programs from fresh sources and validate/update.
Update OS X to 10.6.8 using the Combo Update for best results.

When you setup a account, use the same user name as before, this way you can simply drag and drop your Users folders right back in and everything should work peachy.
If your original machine had 10.5 and you want the free iLife that comes with the disks with the computer, then you'll have to install 10.5 first, then 10.6, then Combo Update.
A lot of people use a Carbon Copy Clone of their boot drive to a HFS+Journaled external drive as a "hold the option key" bootable backup in case something goes bad. (in addition to TimeMachine for more immediate backups.)
If the above doesn't work, then I would suggest trying to restore your machine to a TimeMachine saved time without Lion. If that doesn't work then I would try doing what the above directions state, but going to the Apple Icon and selecting StartUp then choosing your bootable disk.

My guess is the OP is using Logic Pro 8 and that version isn't compatible with Mavericks....(10.9.x)
Only solution is to roll back to the previous configuration from backups... or start again from scratch installing OS X 10.8.5 or earlier... and LP8 (8.0.2 is the best version)
Personally I would use OS X 10.6.8 and Logic Pro 8.0.2 as that was a very stable combination (If indeed, the OP has Logic Pro 8)
