Wants to add an Hard Drive

Hi there !
I actually have an MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR, with 2 hard drives and 2 cd/DVD burners.
I'd like to add a third hard drive, but not sure If I still have IDE port free, or if I can use the serial ATA connection ?
P.S. : My actual 4 drives are IDE.
If choosing serial ATA, should I take serial ATA2 hard drive ?
Many Thanks !!!

"...I'd like to add a third hard drive, but not sure If I still have IDE port free..." 2 IDE ports supports up to 4 IDE devices, so, you reached max. supported.
"...or if I can use the serial ATA connection ..." Yes you can. Remember to look your P.Su. AMPS. to 3 volt rails, because adding more and more devices imply more and more power needs...

  • I want to add another hard drive to my exsisting RAID 0 setup - how can i do this?

Hi all, wonder if somebopdy can help me
I have my computer setup as follows:
    1 x SSD - used for my O/S - windows 7 ultimate 64bit
2 x 1 TB hard drives - WD black series in a RAID 0 arrar
Now Im slowly but surely running out of space on the RAID ( the two hard drives) so im thinking about purchasing 2 x more of these exact same hard-drives to add to the RAID but iv never done this before and obviously I cannot lose any of my data currently
saved on this RAID - as iv deleted everything I don't use or want
what is the best way to back all my data up and how would I add 2 x new hard drives to my RAID 0  so that it will include 4 x 1 tb hard drives in total
thank you hope somebody can help

    Hi,
You have to know that with a RAID 0 (striped set), if any drive in the array fails for any reason, you will loose all data on the volume. In this case, the more drives you add, the greater the chance for failure--with increased I/O.
Being you already have a RAID 0 setup with two drives, you cannot just break the stripe--you will loose all data if not backed up.
To effectively add another drive to your RAID 0 implementation, you will have backup your machine--making an image is the best option--break the array, add the drive and then restore your image.
About how to extend the raid 0, you may need some third-party tool to complete. Here is some references for you:

  • Want to add internal hard drive to my Mac Pro

I want to add an internal hard drive to my Mac Pro bought in 2011
Running Lion 10.7.5  Processor is 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    Have a 1TB SATA
Do I need a 2.5" or 3.5" ? Any other criteria i should know about when looking?
    Advice is appreciated.

For a Mac Pro you'll probably want to go with a 3.5" drive. I would recommend Hitachi. I put a 2.5" new model Hitachi in my laptop along with an SSD and the Hitachi HD is unbelievably fast for a "spinner." If that's how there 2.5" models are there 3.5" models will only be better.
Make sure none of the drives you use have a variable rotational speed. Some of the Western Digital Green drives have that and they go to sleep a lot. When they sleep they have to wake up and when they wake up it causes a delay. It won't happen if the drives in constant use but it can be annoying. I believe the Green drives are intended primarily for backup use where speed isn't critical but energy savings and longevity are.
These are my opinions and observations.

  • Want to add external hard drive

Should all ex. hard drives be recognized immediately? What if it is not? All usb ports work fine for everything else.

    Hi:
    They should.
I am assuming you have one that is just USB powered, or if you have one that is both USB and requires additional A/C power, that you know they are powered up correctly?
If you know your USB ports are working, most likely you have a defective external HDD.
If you connect it and the device is found, but needs drivers, then that is a different story. Most new external HDD's do not require anything but to plug it in to the USB port, and connect additional A/C power if required.

  • Want to replace my hard drive from 160g to 500g what do i need to know

want to replace my hard drive on a compaq presario sr055cl. it has a 160 g hard drive how big can i go
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Here is the Service Manual showing how to replace a hard drive:
    Manual
It does have 2 SATA connectors. Here is a picture of the motherboard.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00069442&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...
This is primitive SATA. It is a SATA connection to an IDE bus. However, the fact that you have a 160 gig drive already installed tells me the motherboard will accept Large Block Addressing 48 bit (LBA48) which means you are not really constrained by size. I am sure a 500 gig drive will work and will bet a 1 TB would also work. I will also bet you would have problems with a high density drive of 2 TB or higher. The existing drive is a IDE, which means it is connected to the motherboard with a flat ribbon cable. You will have a hard time finding an IDE drive on the market these days. It will have to be SATA. Just attach a SATA data cable between the hard drive and the motherboard. You will likely need to get a molex (white 4-pin) to SATA power adapter, too, but those often come with the hard drive or are available for a couple bucks at the store where hard drives are sold.
You should be able to clone the old drive to the new using cloning software. I like and recommend Acronis True Image Home. If I were doing this I would connect the new SATA drive to the motherboard port with the side cover off and also bring power to the SATA drive. I would leave the original drive in and boot from the cloning software disk doing a proportional resize so all partitions are expanded the same percentage. After the clone is complete remove the original drive and bolt the SATA drive in its place. I would just tell you to add a second hard drive but the computer only has space for one unless you want to remove the card reader.
You may need to enable the SATA ports in the BIOS if they are not currently in use. The motherboard picture page linked above tells how to enter the BIOS. Post back if you need more help.

  • How can I add the hard drive icon to the menu bar on a MBPr

How can I add the hard drive icon to the menu bar on a MBPr?  I have downloaded Google Earth and it wants me to drag it to the hard drive for install. I was able to display the icon but now I would like to put it on the menu bar. Is this possible? Or can I add it to the hardware section under system preferences?
I'm a new Apple user, coming out of the dark ages of a lifetime in the PC Windows world.
    Thanks

It's on your Desktop, is it not? You cannot put it on the menubar through OS X although you may find third-party utilities that will. If you want it on the Desktop:
Select Preferences from the Finder's Finder menu and check the desired boxes:
Click on the Sidebar icon in the toolbar to set what you want displayed in the Sidebar.

  • I want to wipe the hard drive on my apple G4 powerbook clean. I do not have the original discs that came with the laptop. I do have the OS x 10.4 disc that I purchased. When I reinstall 10.4 will that disc also have itunes iphoto and safari on it.

I have an apple powerbook g4 running 10.3.9 which my daughter gave me. However all the installation discs were lost. I just purchaed OS x Panther for it. I want to wipe the hard drive clean to get rid of all of her personal information as I want to donate the laptop to a needy family. Do I need the installation discs or will the panther os x disc have everything that I need to wipe the hard drive clean and install panther. I do have an external hard drive.

    Hello again,
Some of those applications you mention will not be on the recently purchased OS 10.3 Panther disk so you'll need to make a copy of them so you can restore them later.
    Copy to your external drive;
iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes* and you may also have World Book 2003 depending what bonus software was installed when new. There may be other Non Apple applications you want to keep also.
*You could probably still get a download of iTunes but because it is such an old version, to save searching for it, make a copy of it while it is in front of you.
Everything else will be the 10.3 Panther disk including Safari.
Ideally with original disks, the process would be:
Insert your Install disk 1 into the drive and then Restart, and hold down the C key to take you to the installation windows.
Select your language, the start up Disk and choose Erase and Install.
At the point your registration process starts, abandon the registration, quit and eject the disk and switch of the computer.
This will allow the new user a freshly installed system, whereby they can complete the registration process themselves.
    However...
But as you want to add back iPhoto and iMovie etc, you'll proceed to create an Admin account, in order to add back those applications, by copying them from the external drive back to the Applications folder. After doing that you are finished.
Instruct the new user can create their own Admin account, (more than one can exist) and thereafter deleting the first one you created.
This would achieve a fresh setup akin to the original.

  • I want to move a hard drive from one MacBook to a newer MacBook

I want to understand the full process I need to go through. Both MacBooks are running 10.6.8. The older MacBook A has a larger hard drive (new last year). I want to keep the newer MacBook B and put the newer hard drive in it. I also want to replicate the data from the older MacBook A onto the newer one...the data is already on the hard drive, but I assume I'll have to restore it after I move the drive into the newer computer. I will use Time Machine to move the data.
    Here are the specs:
    MacBook A:
MacBook running 10.6.8 with 2 GHz Intel Core Duo
contains the hard drive I want to move
    MacBook B:
MacBook running 10.6.8 with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
I want to move the hard drive and data here
    1. Will this work? What would happen if I just moved the hard drive and turned on MacBook B? I'm assuming that's not a good option, but am I wrong?
    2. I have the original install DVD for 10.5.4 and a newer install DVD for 10.6.3. Do I need to use the original disk and then update. or can I start with 10.6.3?
    3. Is it safe to assume that if I back up MacBook A using Time Machine I will be able to restore it onto MacBook B once I move the hard drive and re-install the operating system?
    4. Should I wipe the hard drive before I move it?
    5. I plan to put MacBook B's hard drive into MacBook A, reinstall the op sys, and sell it. Will it be compatible? It comes from a faster machine.
I can get info on the physical aspects of moving the drives on YouTube, so I'm really more interested in how to make sure I get the operating system and data parts right.
Thanks for any and all help. Step by step instructions would be awesome!
    Jeannie

    1.  What would happen if I just moved the hard drive and turned on MacBook B? I'm assuming that's not a good option, but am I wrong?
I can see no reason why this would not work. I would try it.
What you do next depends on the results of this test.
    2. You do not need to go back to 10.5, except when you are selling A.
    3. Yes. If you reinstall the OS on B, during set up you can transfer data from a TM back up.
    4. Since you plan to reinstall the OS after the drive is in place, I would not erase before the transfer. That will give you a chance to test the transplant before you reinstall. You can of course wipe the drive just before you start the install.
    5. No problem. Drives don't care about a machine's processor speed.

  • HT201250 how do i add external hard drive to my time machine back up

how do i add external hard drive to my time machine back up so that I may view the files independently on apple tv please?

To elaborate on above.  I am looking to add about 300gig of photos on an external hard drive to TC.
Once I do this I believe I can then have itunes source its photos from TC without having them stored directly on my iMac?
Then I am assuming once I keep itunes on with home sharing I can stream these photos through Apple TV?
My inital problem is getting the photos onto TC in an individual folder not just a backup folder....is that possible or what would you suggest please?
