Hi!
I can connect to my network with no problems with my new computer (macbook pro - INTEL - 10.5.8). However, I am trying to connect with my old one (POWERBOOK G4 - 10.4.11) and it says that the password is incorrect. I think it might have to do with the fact that it is asking me to introduce the WPA Personal password, AND NO OTHER OPTION. And I am almost certain that it requires a WEP password. Am I making any sense? Is there any way to fix this? Any other ideas? Thanks in advance

OK first check the version of software that's running in your airport card on the G4. Then go to Apple Support for your computer model - and locate the airport card downloads and D/L the latest version. The reason I have you check the software version first is that indeed you may be up to date. Then it's another issue. Also the wireless hub you're using is it an Apple hub (airport express or extreme) or some other model?

9500 Communicator lack of support - USA

I purchased the 9500 Communicator from Dubai back in Nov 2004 while stationed overseas with the US military, when the 9500 first came out. I have been using the phone in the US without any real major issues. Being the clumsy person that I am, I have dropped the phone on several occasions. On one of those occasions the phone fell and the front face came off and so did the keypad. It was windy and the keypad flew away why it was not attached as one with the face place I have no clue, what was Nokia thinking? Still I was able to use the phone since I remembered where the numbers were on the blank keypad.
My issue with Nokia is:
I have been trying for over two weeks to get some one in Nokia (USA, Middle East and UK) to give me a Repair Service Center's address where I can mail my communicator. I need to replace the worn/scratched/broke front and back cover as well as getting the firmware upgrade [current version I have is: 4.44(1) ] and yes, my front cover has started to flop as well.
1) I do NOT care WHERE I have to send it, just give me an address!
2) Yes I know that it is out of warranty and that I WILL have to pay for the service and parts, FINE I will PAY, JUST GIVE ME A PLACE TO MAIL IT TO! This is the question I have been asking for ever it seems! What part of this request is not comprehend able?
3) Nokia’s customer support is so pathetic! All you get is the run around! Everyone is just trying to point the finger to someone else. I even tried to order just the keypad from the US and I was told there might be a difference between the US keypad and the UK version - I DO NOT THINK SO! I have been in the telecom & computer industry in both commercial & government/military for almost 15 years. It's not like the US/UK keypad is in any other language than English! The number 1 will always look like the number 1 in the UK and the US! What a lame excuse! It is like Nokia can not communicate with each other at a Global Enterprise level! Is this NOT a Global company? What type of message are you sending your customers and your investors? I mean just because there are regional subsidiaries should not mean that there is NO communications between other regions, or wait are Nokia's products NOT communications equipment? If they can sell communication equipment and can NOT communicate amongst themselves that's pretty pathetic! It is pretty sad that one customer service center has no access to the other. Have you not heard of the software like the Remedy ticketing system? It is great for supporting things like customer support even on a Global scale!
What should have been a mundane task of giving me an address has turned into a praying for a miracle to happen request! Why did this happen? Why should it go so far up to the next level? What type of changes in training is Nokia implementing if that?
Why doesn’t the Executive branch review the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) procedures to make Nokia more efficient? Do they not listen to what their customers and industry want/ need? There are so many websites that do reviews on products like Nokia phones, is there no group in Nokia that takes heed to what others think of their product and review them and if possible send those changes down to the research and development and production departments? I know I am not the smartest guy, but I think I have been around to know better on what things companies can do to create and sell their product and thus make a name and PROFIT for themselves! Currently in the US, Nokia's stock price is ONLY $4.00 (USD). I'll bet if they actually made better products, see where industry is headed, actually listened to their customers and did some really good predictive analyses in marketing they would be an even better company producing a much better product that would create a frenzy of people all over the world wanting to buy their products like the Motorola Razr mobile phone when it first came out!
It seems that everyone I have spoken to says the same thing: Nokia products are nice but they lacks features, standard operating system, availability of software, looks, and support!
Nokia is suppose to be a Global company trying to sell its products to people and companies on a Global scale. If you can NOT support your own product then how in the hell are you suppose to support your customers? I always thought that the 9500 Communicator was Nokia's top of the line product? Well if that being the case then Nokia SHOULD have top notch support for this product! If Nokia is suppose to be the Mercedes of mobile phones well act like it then! If you can not support your high end system then why produce it in the first place? There should be tons of competent technical support professionals, options, upgrades and accessories etc... if you want to make Nokia into an industry leader then you need to have a product that works well and is sought after not only by customers but also by your OWN employees and is supported well and get some real talented minds to think of some newer things to integrate in your phone lines. Basically the Communicator series should have EVERYTHING that the mobile business customer needs on the road without having to carry around a laptop!
Maybe on the NEXT version/ generation of Communicators they would have:
Vibrate mode
Voice recognition
Operating system should be Microsoft windows mobile based
More local storage especially for MP3s
Use ring tones
2.0 or greater Mega pixel camera
Mini USB connector
USB 2.0
Programmable soft keys
Newer Bluetooth for stereo headsets
A lit keypad for when the cover is open
An external keyboard that folds and you can use for emails/ SMS
802.11 (b/g/n) support with WAP/ WEP encryption
Colored face and back plates that are interchangeable
Touch screen would be an improvement
Larger capacity internal memory
Ability to block calls that were Unknown, or originate from blocked numbers, certain numbers/ certain area codes etc...

If you key in 'London' into the search box, you should get a list of Nokia service companies who should be able to help.
Although I'm not in London I have used similar 3rd party companies to do chargable repairs (eg when hinges broke!)
You could try calling some of the them to see how they might be able to help.

Airport problems on new Core 2 Duo (network attachment delays)

I have just bought 17" 2GHz Core 2 Duo. Lovely machine, but I have some problems with internal Airport card.
After startup it takes about 5 seconds to attach to the WiFi network I run. Subsequently, if I load iChat automatically at login, by the time Airport comes online, iChat is already displaying "Network diagnostic" dialogue. After you OK it, iChat will not try to login anymore (as opposed to temporarily losing network after successful login where it will log back in on its own.)
Something doesn't feel right about this Airport on the iMac. After clicking Airport symbol on the top bar it takes few seconds for the menu to drop down and often accompanied with a beach ball. Ping time to a base station during these few seconds increase from 1mS to 100-200mS.
Things I have tried:
-Fresh reinstall of just basic OS X 10.4.7 from restore disks
-Using two different access points (base stations) - 3Com and D-Link
-WAP, WEP and just open network
-limit connections to 802.11b mode only (11Mbps and lower)
-Change WiFi channels and use interference robustness
-Use PowerBook G4 as a base station in computer-to-computer and Internet sharing modes
With all the above the behaviour does not change...
I have a stock iMac model with no custom options, modifications or peripherals. Signal strength is excellent.
My 17" PowerBook G4 in the same room boots up and wakes up into fully active Airport connection and it "just works" smoothly and transparently. So were all other WiFi connections I had here from Macs and PC over the years.
I have been using WiFi for 4 years and have done multiple installations including industrial networks, I am also long time Mac user so I have a feeling how it should work so I know my iMac Airport just does not work right.
I suspect it is drivers/OS issue. This is based on the fact that once established, the link works fine but as soon as OS tries to access the Airport card to reconfigure it (either at startup or prompted by the user), some hiccups and delays occur...
I wonder if anybody can confirm this behaviour or suggest something I might try to fix this... I want iMac to use WiFi as transparently as PowerBook G4.

Thanks, smacman, the bridge solution is brilliant and would work perfectly from technical point of view, however, I am trying to showcase the "Apple experience" to some other people and at the moment I am not winning.
I am good enough to write shell scripts or even fix low-level source code in C or ASM but I don't want to waste my time fixing it...
I had a quick look and the problem seems to be with iMac's Airport being very slow during existing networks scan which REQUIRES dropping current connection as channels and modulation changes during the scan. I have locked my router to work in 802.11b mode only. If I could do the same with the Airport on iMac I am sure it would have helped a lot as no 11g or 11a networks were scanned and queried. Forcing it to connect to a specific network did not help. I can't find any file with low-level hardware settings for the Airport, otherwise I'd have a go at it. Maybe I should search Darwin community's help but most probably Apple only releases compiled binary for WiFi drivers with no access to source code or settings.
One other thought - 802.11 has a different frequency spectrum certifications in different countries and in certain areas allowed frequency range is limited. Maybe, forcing locale to e.g. France (where certified channels are only 1-7) can speed up things...
I have tried WPA2 encryption as well but I believe the problem is occurring during the network scan.

- If the router is broadcasting its SSID (can see in available networks) then you just enter the password. I know the type of encryption.
- If the router is not broadcasting then you need to select the type of encryption used on the router and then enter the password.
- Usually a router only has one password and one encryption.
- You have to use the correct password and we can't help you determine it. You can reset the router. Just download/look at the manual for your router by going to your router manufacturers support site.
- Are you sure you are trying to log into the right network/router. When I look at my available networks I have five available.
If you need further help give us more details or your network/router configuration.

Newbie needs help about Data Encryption

bought a Wireless G router Saturday, followed the instruction on the cd and hooked up the router to the Desktop (ME) and the cable modem. I am happy that my new laptop (XP) can surf the Internet anywhere in the house.
Can anyone see what I can doing when I surf the net via the laptop (wireless)? Can they see for example what I am typing in a Word document?
Since the desktop is connected to the router, can anyone see what's in my desktop computer?
On the laptop, I click on properties of Linksys router, it says: Data Encryptiopn No.
Do I need to set the laptop up for data encrytion? What is it encryting? stuff I type in my e-mail? stuff I type using Word? Does it only encrypt stuff that I send through the Internet?
What's WAP, WEP? Do I need it?
I called Linksys Tech Support, gave up after waiting for 30 minutes.

No, no one can see what you type on your WORD document or whatever you are doing on your computers. It says NO ENCRYPTION because you have'nt enabled any security on your router. What the encryption does, is that it prevents other people that has a wireless PC to connect in your wireless network and get internet access. Once the encryption is enabled, if a PC tries to connect, it will be asked for a password, so if they input the incorrect password, they will not be able to connect and use your internet access. Did I make it clear?
WPA and WEP are types of encryption. WPA is more secured but it is not compatible with all wireless cards or laptop PC (if they are wireless ready). So i do suggest you use WEP on your router.

Internet Connection Sharing using java

I am currently trying to figure out a solution for making an application which would help me accomplish ICS.
I have googled for ideas on this, without too much help.
My ideas so far :
1) Detect input(wait a min. how can I detect if this is the "live" wire ?) from a network interface and then try to share/redirect the traffic to the other n/w interfaces.
2) Actually listing all the n/w interfaces and asking the user to select the master interface.
the problem is, this may also have a few wireless connections hence I would need to know the signal strengths and then post WAP/WEP info too.
I am thinking of using jpcap for this.
This is the first time I am doing such a thing. Please let me know how do I proceed with this. I dont even know if the lines that I am thinkin on (1 & 2) are even correct.
I would be grateful for any pointers on this.

If you are talking about NAT? like the real internet connection sharing that many routers, firewalls, etc use to virtualize an IP then it cannot be done in PURE JAVA. Of course you can do something with JNI and possiably even get it to work. But then you will probably just be using features of the platform that your computer is installed upon as in order to do NAT, you have to be able to inject your code into the IP stack code.
Linux you could do it easily as long as the kernel supported it, as you would just have to run ipchains/ipfw commands.
in windows, I have no idea.
However, if you are talking about a proxy, then there are many implementations already done. Proxies are almost trivial to implement these days.

Default Gateway not transmitting to wireless clients

Our organization is using a Linksys BEFW11S4 router, and for the most part, everything is working correctly. However, ipconfig /all on the clients does not show a default gateway for the wireless machines. I can not find anywhere in the router web-page that will let me configure this.
What am I missing here?

Ok,verify option in router DHCP ->enable.
Authentication(WAP,WEP),SSID name, I dont know the settings of the router.
Just se the DHCP section,enable it and configure the subnet masks of the clients .

Unable to connect wifi nokia xpressmusic 5800.

Up until a few days ago I was able to browse the net with native browser and Opera mobile and use Fring, facebook and various other apps via wifi to my router. Now my phone says I'm connected but the browsers and apps won't connect. I have made sure my wifi is priority 1 and deleted and then added the wifi connection again but still no joy. Can someone advise me of a fix for this or is the only way to back up then reinstall the firm ware?

Thanks for your suggestions Jampe. I had tried them before and several other fixes which didn't work. However I have just tried the last suggestion in the thread which you posted the link to and it seems to have worked so far... It has survived switching the phone off. The next test will be when I switch the router off at night and see if it connects again tomorrow. But so far so good. If it still works tomorrow I shall mark the thread as 'solved'. This was the method I used...

Guys don't know if this is too simple but, I had same problem with new N8. It worked fine for three or four weeks on my WLAN then suddenly I started getting the "Invalid Server Name" error. Couldn't understand what had happened then realised that I had unplugged the router (had to use a different power outlet) whilst the N8 was connected to my WLAN. I have now solved my issue as follows, I deleted my WLAN access point from the phone, turned the phone off, then switched the router off (and removed power supply transformer from mains outlet) for five minutes. I then switched the router back on and gave it time to establish its network connections, after that I switched the phone back on, searched for WLAN, entered WAP/WEP password as required and the error messages have now ceased. Hope this works for other people too.

Help! la Music n'arrete pas de couper....

Bonjour a tous, je rends les armes...
j ai un modem netgear, reseau sur lequel je connecte l'airport express. J arrive bien a connecter le tout, et meme a avoir la musique... Deux petits problemes subsistent:
1. la musique se coupe toutes les 3 secondes... assez penible...
2. pour que itunes voit l airport, il faut desactiver toutes les protection reseaux (wap, wep). si je les laisse 'on', je perds l airport, et ne peux le retrouver qu avec un hard reset..
help pls je suis a bout...

problème classique suer certain mac récent (imac 24" entre aurtre). cf les forums français de macbidouille et macgeneration. Mais il n'y a pas vraiment de solution et cela semble être un big soft non corrigé par Apple.

Apps can't connect with OS different than 2.2

Hello, I've looked around the forum and I see common issues as mine but not the same. So my problem is from updating my Ipod Touch 2G 16GB with ANY OS. With the original 2.2 I have no problems at all, but since 3.0 is out every single update I've tried is preventing me from using Wi-Fi. The OS3 was preventing me from using entirely the internet if I remember right, while the OS4 is preventing me from downloading apps and connecting with the current ones. I can browse around YouTube and web pages, I can browse the App Store, but I can't download anything. When I try to download an app, it's just trying to connect until I stop it. When I try to run apps that I already have, by restoring from Itunes, they just can't connect to internet, it says that there is no active internet connection. The Wi-Fi is up and running, just not for the apps it seems.
So I've tried reseting the network settings, full reset, restore, WAP/WEP/no password on router, and no result at all. I just keep going back to 2.2 after every update because I need my apps to be able to connect to internet.
Because Apple were very unhelpful I am looking for any input that could help.

You can get support from Apple by visiting an Apple store or by calling technical support. This is a user forum.
I am going to suggest that you work on your WiFi problem. There are no inherent OS problems in 2, 3, or 4 that would cause what you are describing. If Safari can connect and you can browse, you don't have a problem. If you can send/receive e-mail, you don't have a problem. If you can connect to the App store but can't buy/download anything, then your problem is with the App store.
But if you do have WiFi issues, then you can try the following (works on all versions of the OS):
1. Reboot your router (unplug it from the power)
2. Reset the touch network settings - tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
3. When your touch restarts, tap Settings > WiFi > Other and completely re-enter your network name, security, and network password.
You can always check to see what your internet connection is up to by tapping Settings > WiFi > and then tapping the blue ">" next to your network name. If your device IP address starts with 169.x, then your most likely problems are with your router or the encryption system you have chosen.
If your iP address is the expected 192.168.x.x series, then your problems may be with your ISP's DNS service. If you know how to work with your wireless router, you can always change the DNS to something a bit more reliable like OpenDNS.
If you still have problems after you try the 3 steps above, post your network configuration for us - type of router, encryption used, etc.

Airport-Router authentication issue

Hi - I have a really annoying authentication issue between my MBP (late '06) and my DIR-655 D-Link router (f/w 1.22 b05).
I am getting "disconnection" issues on my MacBook Pro only. We are not seeing any issues on my fiance's Vaio laptop. So I'm thinking maybe the router isn't to blame...?
I put "disonnection" in quotes because airport always shows that there is a connection to the router/network, but there clearly is not. Sometimes I have to disconnect/reconnect airport, but often the connection just comes back after 30 seconds or so. It usually looks like a DNS issue...holding at the "looking up" stage, but I really don't think it is. I've tried various domain name servers.
I thought I had worked around this by allowing the router to accept G in addition to 802.11n connections, but the problem, while not as prevalent, seems to have increased lately even while using 802.11g.
I see that the router's log is replete with messages like this:
*Wireless system with MAC address 0017F2HR7BC6 disconnected for reason: Authentication Failed*
That MAC address is indeed my MBP
I'm also seeing a lot of messages along these lines:
*Blocked incoming TCP connection request from 119.154.75.13:1420 to 173.78.73.92:445*
But I assume these messages are unrelated.
So I turned off WPA-Personal security and, of course, no further authentication errors. Those blocked TCP requests continue.
Of course, I don't want to keep WPA turned off.
Any ideas as to why authentication would be failing on and off with airport? I didn't even realize there was more than a single authentication (i.e. after you first connect), but I still have a LOT to learn about routers!

Re your router issue, have you considered using MAC Address Security (not WAP/WEP) ?

Internet connection did it dont know how!

Hello have had my apple lap top for about two years, today i went to the apple shop to ask about getting on line (already have a computer which is online) as i understood it i needed to get a router and find out if i had the right hardware to connect. Well i have just added some software (iworks) and was playing about with my laptop when to my amazement i can now get on line!!! i cant understand what i have done? Shouldnt complain but what is happening? Hope someone can explain tol a computer illiterate person??? Manhy thanks, Karen.

you are probably connecting to a wireless router that has no security settings which your airport detected its signal.. if the router is not configured to use WAP/WEP security settings, everyone who has wireless cards and can detect the signal will be able to connect to the router automatically and use it for internet... but if the owner of the router configured the router to use WAP/WEP, you won't be able to connect to his/her wireless signal unless you know his/her WAP/WEP password.

WEP vs WAP

I have the older Airport Extreme. When I setup wireless security using WEP, my Macbook finds my Airport network connection as soon as the Macbook finishes booting. When I was using WAP, I had to manually select my Airport network almost everytime I powered up the Macbook. At the time, I thought it had something to do with the OSX 10.4.8 update. However, after numerous calls to Apple support, nothing was resolved. Just wondering if someone else has run into this problem and figured out how to fix it.

There are internet search site on the web. One is called Google. You can type in www.google.com and now you can type in wap vs wep and you will have your answer.

I just got an Apple TV. I am using an Airport Base Station to connect to the Internet wireless with my iMac. So far without any password-protection (very neglectant, I know).
i want to password protect but I am getting confused on how to do this.
Can someone please explain in basic language, as I am not a computer-geek, how I should do this and what kind of password I should use. WEP, WAP, WAP2 - that's way to confusing for me. What should I use so that the ATV is functioning properly?

The tv uses all these types of security, WEP is the weakest and WPA2 is the strongest security. Each allows you to enter varying lengths of passwords, in theory the longer the password the more secure but I wouldn't always say that was true (i.e. '1W3e7' is likely to be more secure than 'password1').
I use WPA2 with an eight character password.

However, I am getting confused how to password protect this wirelss connection so that my neighbors don't use it.

Also I want to get an Apple TV later this month. I heard that the kind of security setting is important for the ATV to function without problems.

WPA2 - Absolute strongest when used with a non-dictionary password (don't use a word from the dictionary as your password). Unfortunately some older equipment may not be compatible with WPA2.
WPA - Nearly as strong as WPA2 when used with a non-dictionary password. Unfortunately some older equipment may not be compatible with WPA.
128 bit WEP - Relatively weak and only recommended if you are using equipment which is not compatible with WPA2 or WPA.
40/64 bit WEP - Extremely weak and only recommended if none of the others is compatible with your equipment.
