WAP2000 Wireless-G Access Point (Setup Help)

Hi,
We have a wireless-g access point typically (and previously, in this case) used for a small business. We were given the device for free and wanted to reset the device to use as our wireless router at home. First and foremost, can a wireless access point double as a home wireless router? I was told that only one computer/laptop at a time can connect to a wireless access point, unlike a wireless router which allows multiple devices to connect to a wireless home network at a time? Is this true?
Second, because the device is not new, we no longer have the setup instructions. Upon resetting the device (holding down the reset button for 10 or more seconds), we were unable to access the WAP2000 online setup page for a username and password. The device is being picked up by our macbooks and shows up in the Airport as "linksys-g." However, we are unable to access the setup page or communicate with the access point. We have tried typing http://198.162.1.1/ in our address bar, but have had no luck.
Do you have any suggestions as to how to set up the device? Also, can this device double as a router that will allow multiple laptops and devices (i.e. sony playstation) to access and use the wireless network simultaneously.
Thank you for your help.

Sam,
First yes you won't to factory reset the unit. You should hold down the reset button longer than 30 seconds and no longer than 45.Once this is back to factory default, the current ip address should be 192.168.1.245 , you will need to statically assign your pc an address in 192.168.1.1 /24 range and make sure you are plugged directly into WAP2000. Now you should be able to access the AP. Default username = admin password = admin

Above is a quick start guide for reference.
Now just configure accordingly.

Hi, My name is Eric Moyers. I am a Network Support Engineer in the Cisco Small Business Support Center. Thank you for using the Cisco Community Post Forums.
Under Wireless/Security how do you have the Wireless Isolation configured?
Wireless Isolation (within SSID) should be disabled to allow wireless computers associated to the same SSID to see and transfer files between each other

  • Having Issues with E1000 as an Access Point setup - Please Help

Quick background - Using an E2000 as my main router for a DSL connection (using an ISP provided Zyxel 660HW modem with wireless disabled if that matters). I have an E1000 that I want to setup as a LAN to LAN connection to the E2000 at the far end of the house and two floors down to extend my network.
I am pretty network saavy and thought this would be a snap. But I am running into trouble and hoping someone can assist.
Here are the steps I took:
    1. I ran a CAT 5 connection down to the basement where the E1000 is to be setup.
    2. I hard reset the E1000 to factory defaults
    3. I connected my notebook to the E1000 via a LAN port. At this stage the E1000 is NOT on the network
    4. I configured the E1000 with an IP of 192.168.1.2 - my main router (E2000) is set to 192.168.1.1 and the IP ranges start at .100 so this should present no conflicts
    5. I disabled DHCP
    6. I disabled NAT
    7. I saved settings and rebooted router
    8. I removed connection to notebook and plugged in the CAT 5 run from the E2000 - LAN port 1 on both (no WAN/Internet port used)
At this stage I expected the E1000 to act as an Access Point but it is not functioning properly. The first thing I notice is that the E1000 that should now be the AP is broadcasting the router name (something like Cisco 54653) even though this is not a broadcast SSID but only the router name. That is odd, I believe.
I have tried rebooting both the E2000 and E1000 along with the modem, no luck. I have tried different IPs for the E1000 just in case but again no luck, the wireless is not extended.
Any advice or guidance? Am I doing something wrong?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It sounds like you have configured the E1000 properly, but you didn't describe how you have configured the Zyxel and E2000.
    Do you have A or B ?
    A.  Zyxel set to full bridge mode.  Then connect Zyxel to E2000's internet port and configure E2000 for PPPoE internet connection type (and DHCP server enabled and NAT enabled). Change MTU to manual on E2000 and enter 1492.  And then connect your E1000 as you described.  Internet connection type on E1000 is AutoconfigDHCP.
    B. Zyxel is configured as modem/router (DHCP server enabled and NAT enabled).  Then connect Zyxel to E2000's internet port.  E2000 is configured as router (DHCP server is enabled and NAT is enabled) and local IP address is 192.168.2.1.  Internet connection type on E2000 would be AutoconfigDHCP.  E1000 is configured as you described except local ip address is 192.168.2.2.  Internet connection type on E1000 is AutoconfigDHCP.

  • Wireless-G Access Point HELP!

Ok, I currently am running my office with highspeed internet. I have the Internet running into the Router and than into the Wireless Access Point. BUT!, I have 2 intruders! Possibly slowing down my internet speed. I need to know how to setup a password protected lock on the wireless networking!
    Thanks,
    Ryan
NOTE: I did misplace my installation disc for the Access Point!

simple... you just need to open up the set-up page of the access point. by default the IP adress of your access point is 192.168.1.245
to secure the wireless router, follow these steps: (do it on a hard-wired computer)
open a web browser, type in http://192.168.1.245
    username: blank, password: admin
go to wireless tab, change SSID, set channel to 11, then save settings
go to wireless security subtab, enable it, then select a security mode, example WEP 64 bit. in the key 1, type in a 10 digit characters (0-9 , a-f), then save the settings
to connect to a secured wireless network
right click on your wireless network connection icon (commonly a single computer icon, found at the bottom system tray where the clock is located at)
view available wireless network, if the network name(SSID) shows up, connect to it, then type in the exact key. confirm it then connect. once connected, try to go online. and that's it

  • Setting up a netgear n300 as wireless bridge/access point with airport extremee

I just replaced my netgear wireless router with the airport to allow our many devices on the network without knocking each other off and also increase the speed.  But would like to use the netgear as a wireless bridge or access point so that I can still connect my NTFS formatted hard drive to be shared on the network.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I can not seem to find my netgear router with 192.168.1.1 as that comes up with another device.  I have tried doing this with a windows laptop in another room but can not seem to make it work.  I am now hooked up directly to the airport thinking i need to do it that way and still no luck. Please help.

As long as you intend to do this over ethernet it will work.. you cannot easily wireless repeat or bridge to an apple router.. you would need specific hardware to do it.
What is the exact model of netgear you have?
The setup method depends on the functionality of the router.. but lets assume it does not have a bridge or WAP mode.
    You use WAN bypass.
    1. Setup the Netgear with IP address in the correct IP range for the rest of the network.. it is hard to talk generalities so lets say the apple is main router and your network is now 10.0.1.x .. then set the Netgear to 10.0.1.250 (apple uses IP 2-200 by default) you can use any value you like outside the DHCP range. Up to the limit which is 254 as long as you keep track of all static IP devices. Apply this setting and power cycle the router.. and you might need to power cycle the computer as well to pick up the new IP.
    2. Turn off the DHCP server in the Netgear. You may lose connection to the netgear now.. do not worry about it.. (this can be combined with one.. if you firstly turn off dhcp before you change the IP.. but whatever is possible.. at some point you will need to change around and if you forget what IP .. you will be in a mess.. so write it on a label and stick on the base of the router.. also without dhcp you will either need to reset router to factory using reset button or use static ip on the computer. )
    3. Plug ethernet from LAN of the main router to LAN of the Netgear. Reboot the whole network is often necessary.
    4. In your computer plugged somewhere in the network.. open browser and go to the address you set.. 10.0.1.250 in my example.
    5. You can then setup the Netgear to do whatever you like.. DIsk access is fine.. wireless is fine.. it just cannot be a router.
Many many reboots if you get lost. Hit reset and start over.

  • Setting up wireless Cisco Access Points independently and network layout

    Hello,
I am technician in a school. I have been asked to upgrade wireless system in school. Currently I am using VDSL2 30Mbps line. I am using E4200 Router, which is providing internet services. The school has 3 floors. On one floor I have this router which is further attached with 16 port gigabit unmanageable switch. The same router is providing wireless service on the same floor using Class C ip address. From the switch I have extended a cable and took it on to another (second floor), where I have got one more gigabit switch. From that switch I have connected one router using different subnet and further i have attached two access points for the entire floor, which is working ok. From the same switch I have extended one more cable up to third floor where I have connected one more access point. So, 3 access points on three floors, 2 switches and two router. This is the current network layout.
Now school have decided to go over to fiber. ISP is going to put Juniper router and going to create vlan and will configure access restrictions. School will have 100Mbps unlimited up and download speed. Its because of increase in number of students. School is still waiting for the router and configuration to be done.
I have got 4 cisco 1602i access points (AIR-SAP1602I-Z-K9). These access points are POE supported. I have got one 8 port POE switch also. When I got these 4 cisco I didnt get power adapters with them. First I want to ask, is this normal. Don't they usually come with power adapter. I know they are POE, but cisco doesn't send them with power adapters.
Second I want to ask, if these access points can work independent without WLAN controller. Or do i have to have WLAN controller.
As fiber is not up yet so, for the time being I have connected these access points with POE switch using Cat5E cable and then further connected the POE switch with normal gigabit switch, which is further conneted with router at this point.
Please tell me if I am doing it correctely. I will also be needing help with the configuration.
Can anyone tell me how to setup these access points independently for current situation to provide internet access. How to set them on different channels etc......
Also want to know if there is any software that can detect access points and can help me manage these access points.
    I shall be thankful.
    Sarab

  • Linksys router ezxs55w and wireless g access point

My laptop has suddenly stopped seeing my wireless connection.  I can see the ones that belong to the neighbors, but not mine. Have rebooted computers, reset access point (even bought a new one but nothing changed) unplugged, etc to no avail.  HELP!  Do I need a new router?  The led lights are green for link/act and 100, orange for full/col.   The connection has worked with no problems for close to a year.  Thank You

Whats the Model number of the Access Point? When you search for the Wireless Networks on your computers are you able to locate (linksys) under the wireless networks?
EZXS55W is a Swtich. So you have connected the Access point to the Switch? and where the switch is connected, is it connected to the Router or to the Modem? Who is your ISP.

  • Failing to get Wireless Internet Access.  Please Help!

Happy new year everyone! OK so here's my problem:
I'm trying to use the Airport connection with a linksys WRT54GS wireless router and I'm unable to access the internet. The Airport recognizes the wireless network, says its connected, but I still can't access the internet even after using a static IP address. When I go to Network Diagnostics and fill in the appropriate information, I get green status icons for all but 'Internet.' Even after running system update through a wired connection on the PBG4 thinking I may have had some outdated soft/firmware, I still couldn't connect to the internet. I've put more time into this than I should have at this point and am completely stumped as to how I can remedy this problem. If there's anyone out there that could help me out I'd really appreciate it. Thanks a lot!

  • How to detect a Wireless Internet access point (Legally)

When I am using my new Macbook Pro at a hotel that has an open and free wireless network, what do I do to note that it is there? What do I bring up to be able connect to it?
I was just at a hospital that friends (there) told me had open and free local wireless access but I could find nothing from the Airport icon/window.
Normally, at home, I am connecting through my Airport Extreme which, in turn, is connected to the DSL Router. Once I leave home, that icon, on the batr at the top of the screen, is greyed out.
MacBook Pro 2.16 dual-core   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Airport Extreme

    Frobozz,
You can control (somewhat) the behavior of wireless connectivity through the Network preference pane (in System Preferences), under Airport. In general, with the default settings, the computer will keep track of all of the networks that you connect to and will re-connect to these automatically. When an unknown open network is available, the computer should ask if you want to join it.
If you know that you are in the vicinity of an open wireless network, select the Airport (antenna) icon in the menu bar and the name of the network should be selectable. If there is nothing showing then perhaps the airport card is turned off or needs to be coaxed back to life by re-booting. If you want another method of checking for wireless networks you could download a widget such as Airport Radar from <http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/>.

  • Just Moved, Want to Use My e3000 as just an access point NEED HELP

Hey, I just moved into a house the other day, the router/modem is upstairs, my desktop/xbox only has wired capabilities, and my laptop has wifi. I was trying to just make a bridge with my my laptop to my desktop while i try and figure out how to get all my stuff working again, but found out the jack in my laptop is broken, so it only has WIFI.
My question is, am I able to use my e3000 to connect to their wifi signal via wifi, in which i can just run a cable to my xbox and desktop within the room?
I cant run 2 cable from upstairs to downstairs for my desktop/xbox, so was hoping this was possible. thanks

Yes, and you can turn wi-fi access on after enabling airplane mode if you want or need internet access via an available wi-fi network.

  • Building a wireless access point

I currently have a wireless access point setup using hostapd and arch. However, I am having MAJOR reliability issues. The wireless connection gets dropped every few hours and my clients will either need to reconnect, or hostapd will need to be restarted. I was thinking about trying a different wireless card in my access point. The card I'm currently using has a ar5152 chip and is supported by the ath5k driver. I was considering getting one of these http://www.biz.newegg.com/Product/Produ … llFullInfo
It seems to use an ralink chipset which is supported in linux. I am wondering what the best wireless card to get is. I am looking for one that is well supported and will work well with hostapd. I would also like to upgrade to wireless N.

I got the same issue with my D-Link DWL G510 (RaLink RT2561/RT61 rev B 802.11g) which isn't reliable at all.
Installed hostapd-git from aur 20min ago and for now the connection seems to be stable (connected with an WG111v3 on windows, a AR9285 chipset on my netboot and a Nexus One), maybe it's helpful for you too.

  • MSI AP11b wireless IEEE802.11b Access Point

hi to all msi admin there and members.
im new here in this forum can anyone help me to answer my question about MSI AP11b wireless IEEE802.11b Access Point product.
I'm planning to buy MSI AP11b wireless IEEE802.11b Access Point to  use my new laptop with wireless and enable me to share my internet using ap11b accesspoint..My problem is im using an usb adsl modem with (no Rj45 jack)only USB. so i can only connect my adsl modem to my desktop pc and i want to share my internet to my laptop using the wireless connection, but the problem is i dont know if this MSI AP11b wireless IEEE802.11b Access Point can help me to share my internet connection over my laptop. i have an idea and i dont think if this would work ex. if i buy MSI AP11b wireless IEEE802.11b Access Point and right after then, as usual my desktop pc is currently connected in the internet using my usb adsl modem, i want to use my desktop pc as a server using internet connection sharing(ICS) (im using WinXP) i have ethernet card that is built on my board and which ap11b available is RJ45 JACK im gonna plug my rj45 and connect it to rj45 jack of ap11b.
is this possible that im going to use my desktop pc to become serve because my adsl modem(USB)(no rj45)r and share my internet using ap11b wireless accesspoint on my wireless laptop?
anyone i need some good advice in this cases...

yes, you could use ap11b to become server and share internet for your wireless laptop.
You have to connect the ap11b to your desktop PC ethernet card via RJ45.
If the ASP can give you more than 2 IP, you can choose "Bridge model" in the "Network Connections" setup.
If the ASP only give you 1 IP, you should share the Internet Connection.
Network connections-->Local Area Connection-->right click-properties-->Advanced-->click "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection"

  • AirPort Extreme used as a wired/wireless access point at same time?

Can the gigabit ethernet ports (wired connection) on the AirPort Extreme be used at the same time as the wireless-N connection when it is installed to a switch on an existing network as an access point? Will it still broadcast simultaneous Wireless-N dual band signals?
If both are yes, then do you have any other information regarding the cofiguration? Or helpful links that may help me? Thank You.

I have not yet purchased an airport extreme or even tried this. I have an existing network with a simultaneous wireless-N dual band router feeding a main switch. From the main switch I have cat5e wired gigabit connections to 4 PC's then two cat5e cables, each going to a small switch at seperate media centers.
I have one area that I have a single cat5e wire that can not get the wireless signal from the existing router. In addition to the wireless signal problem, I could use a couple extra gigabit ethernet connections to this same area, but can't pull any new cat5's to it.
I was told I needed to install a multi-gigabit-port wireless-N access point or install another switch with a single port wireless-N access point connected to it. As I looked into this, the dedicated wireless-N access points are wireless-N dual band but do not broadcast them simultaneously (it's either/or).
So I was wondering if I would benefit in any way by using the AirPort Extreme instead of the dedicated wireless access point recommended, and if it will give me what I need plus a simultaneous dual band wireless-N connection to the area? I don't know why the IT didn't recommend installing another router like I'm thinking? Don't know if it will even work? If it is a good idea or not? Don't want any conflict or networking problems to have to deal with just because I didn't listen and/or got the wrong item? What do you think?
