WAP4410N Connectivity control - Illegal MAC address

I use a WAP4410N in Access Point mode and have it configured to control connectivity via approved MAC addresses.
I have just taken delivery of a Nokia 5800 mobile phone from Three that has a MAC address EC:9B:5B:xx:xx:xx.
When entering the 5800 MAC address in the WAP4410N's connectivity control table I get a popup warning "MAC address must be 12 Hex characters (0-9 and A-F) with optional delimiters (: or -), and the second bit is not a odd number". Although it is given as a "warning" it will not accept the MAC address.
I could of course disable the wifi MAC connectivity control without compromising the security too much, but this would be a last resort.
Is there any way around this?
Would you advise me to return the phone (would be a real hassle!!) because it may give problems in the future on other wifi networks?
If I do return the phone there is no guarantee that the replacement would have a more "standard" MAC address. My wife took delivery of the same phone yesterday, but from Orange. It's MAC address starts 00:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx and has presented no problem. I have lodged queries with both Three and Nokia, but had no response as yet.

Update: There was something else wrong with this phone (radio didn't work) so I had to return it to my service provider anyway. The replacement phone had a legal MAC address so all is now well.
I would still be interested in the answers to my questions though if anyone has any wisdom in these matters.

I recently realized, that it is possible to connect a "new" device without registration currently, only the correct password is necessary. I noticed this first when my new iPhone could connect with only password and could reproduce this with another iPhone and a notebook of a friend.
Checking Time Capsule settings everything is okay, mac address controls are set to "Timed Access".
I can't find an explanation for this behaviour on my side and I'm afraid this is a software problem. Can with the same configuration check against please?

Correct. That is what I meant when I said that you can "edit" it.
I have lobbied Apple several times to make this setting and setup more clear. Most users do not understand the confusing "default" rule, which allows access to any computer with the password unless the MAC address is listed in a separate rule. Users assume that no computer will be allowed access unless it is specifically allowed, when that is not the case. It is really confusing.

Illegal MAC address on 5800

I have just taken delivery of 2 Nokia 5800s, one form Orange and one from Three. The wifi network I will be connecting to most often controls connectivity via a list of approved MAC adresses (the access point is a cisco WAP4410N).
When entering the 5800 MAC addresses in the WAP4410N's configuration the phone from Orange presented no problem, but the one from Three resulted in an error "MAC address must be 12 Hex characters (0-9 and A-F) with optional delimiters (: or -), and the second bit is not a odd number".
It seems the MAC address of the Three supplied phone disobeys this rule. It's MAC address is EC:9B:5B:xx:xx:xx. The Orange supplied 5800 has a more standard address starting 00:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx.
Calls to Three technical support were fruitless.
I could of course disable the wifi MAC connectivity control without compromising the security too much, but this would be a last resort.
What standards does Nokia use to assign MAC addresses?
Is there something special about MAC address assigning in relation to Three supplied phones?
Am I just unlucky? If I sent my phone back to Three for a replacement would the replacement possibly have a more "standard" MAC address?
Is there any way the MAC address can changed, spoofed etc.?

TP 60 Access connection - Preferred AP MAC address disabled permanently

I have at home WiFi Router and WiFi repeater. They both are visible, but Router has weak signal, Repeater strong signal. TP not like to connect to Repeater. Problem, that preferred AP MAC address field is always disabled in Connection wizard (profile).

My kid pulled my CP out now getting Illegal MAC address error

So my kid was playing around and pulled the CF out of my 2801 router. It is a router I use at home for testing purposes. Well now I am getting an error Illegal MAC when I try to use rommon to tftpdnld a new IOS. I have also tried xmodem without success. I did read about bad cookies but there wasnt really an answer to the problems presented. Can someone point me in the right place.

So through trail and error I was able to manipulate the cookie to finally work on my machine. This address helped tremendously.

I did have to make up a MAC address but I used this address http://standards.ieee.org/develop/regauth/oui/oui.txt
to at least get the correct vendor type.
Everything loaded from there. There are so many people who stated it was a compact flash issue. This was not the case at all. It was a corrupt cookie on the mainboard.

Macbook pro trying to connect to wrong mac address?

I'm running on a 2010 Macbook Pro OS X 10.7.2.
Basically, my 309g-m stopped working the other day. I've tried reinstalling the drivers and software, but it still refuses to print (I get stuck at "looking for printer"). I have, however, noticed that when I'm adding a printer in system preferences, the printer is listed as "Photosmart Premium C309g-m [F1EDA7]." However, after connecting my printer to my network (via the printer), the page printed listed that my Hardware Address (MAC) is "78:e7:d1:f1:ed:a8" - So I think my Macbook is trying to connect to the wrong mac address.
Any ideas?
P.S. I've tried to connect via IP and my computer cannot find the printer.

No, that all looks good. Your printer's unique "name" is HP plus the last 6 digits of your printer's MAC address.
On the front of the printer: Setup > Network > WIreless Network Test. What does it say about the printer's wireless radio?

How to find which port on the switch that it connected with Mac address?

Hi,
I am trying to find which port of the switches it connected to thru mac-address?
I am able to get the mac-address from the ip address when i do
"show ip dhcp binding snooping" at the core switch.
But when I move on to the Edge switch to check which PC with this Mac address connected to the port,i returned with no result.(onli trunk port result)
I use sh ip arp | inc 000d.60cb.445d
but didn't give me which port it connected to.
How to solve this problem?

Hi KL,
If you are already on the edge switch you can run a command "sh mac-address-table address " and it will give you the port number.
Incase you get a port which is a trunk port that means the end device does not exist on this switch and exist on some downstream switch. So you can just find out the ip address of the downstream switch with "sh cdp neigh detail" command and connect to that downstream switch and then again issue the command "sh mac-address-table address " and check the port number and follow the above steps till the time you get the switch on whcih end host is connected.

Cant connect to Asus WL500-G premium (no security, locked MAC address)

I live in a rental apartment.
My landlord offered my internet, saying that i only need to provide him with my wireless MAc address, he type it in the AccessPoint (router) and i have internet.
Did so with my iphone and works like a charm...
I have difficulties with the MBP however.
I have given him the airport ID, he typed it in the routed pref like he dd with my iphone,. but no luck.
I can see the Access point, and i can get the wireless to work anywhere else with my MBP.
DOnt knwo what is the problem. Can it be that MBP simply doesnt like the ASUS router?
Any ideas what can be wrong?

Did he type it in properly? Another possibility. Ironically MAC filtering offers nearly no security vs. a proper WPA key so he'd be just as well off not bothering - ask him to turn off filtering just for a few minutes and see if you can access or not. If you can either your MAC address is not right or how he entered it is not right. His logs will show not permitting a connection and what MAC address was disallowed. Use that one.

Sh mac-address command in Cisco RSP4

Hello guys,
Need your ideas on how to know to which port a device connected to using mac-address information on Cisco DLSw RSP4.
I did tried using command "sh mac-address add" but it is not recognized in this IOS.

Interesting hardware you have there.
Is this perhaps a cat 5xxx with an RSM module?
In that case, the RSM is in fact a router blade.
The command "sh mac-adress " is only found on switches. This info is there already but you need to get it from the supervisor which will be running CatOS.

Tools to find a mac address on a port in my network

I would like to find a tool to help me to easily locate a mac address on the network.
At the moment I use the following comands :
On the central switch : sh mac-address-table
then sh cdp neighbors to locate the witch on with the mac address is connected
and sh mac-address-table again .

With Ciscoworks Campus Manager you can easily find any MAC connected to your network. But you need to buy the LMS suite, and it's not for free :-)
An other way is to use a Layer 2 trace, but all devices in between have to support that feature, don't ask me which platforms/software releases, do it or not.

"Your Machine MAC Address is Invalid"?

Hi,
I need to use a software that is based on Adobe Air but got trouble with my MAC address. So, every time I try to login to the software, it's always failed and "your machine MAC address is invalid".
There's a question that kept popping up after the installation and it hasn't appeared anymore after I click "Always Allow". Any idea what should I do to get this fixed? Because all other MAC users can use this software well.

Unless you turned it off, the first letter you entered is automatically capitalized. Carefully check each letter as you enter it. Also, some users have turned of Auto-Fill in Settings>Safari to get the password to work.

Settings>General>Reset Network Settings
- Reset your iPod
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

There is no "advantage" of cloning the MAC address. The only advantage would be to have internet or not.
In many cases, it is absolutely unnecessary to use the MAC address clone.If you have a working internet connection through your router then there is no need to use the MAC address clone function.
Only when you find that you have a working internet connection on one computer directly on your modem but not when you connect through the router (or a different computer directly on the modem) then it is necessary to use the MAC address clone function.
This usually is only the case with cable TV ISPs. They only allow you to have a single active internet connection at any time. They do this by remembering the MAC address which connects through a specific modem. If you first connect a computer for tests directly to your modem you'll have an internet connection. Now if you connect a different device to your modem it doesn't it's because the ISP has still locked the internet connection for the MAC address of the first computer.
How to remove the lock depends on the ISP and the modem. Sometimes it's enough to reset the modem or to power down everything. Sometimes you have to power down everything for a few hours and after that the first connecting device is the one with the internet connection (i.e. make sure to connect the router then...) If you want to know exactly how your ISP does this you should ask them...
The simple workaround is to use the MAC address clone function. The router "clones" the MAC address of the first computer, i.e. it basically pretends to be that computer. The MAC address is accepted by the ISP and is immediately allowed to the network. You have a working internet connection either directly on the first computer or through the router because both use the same MAC address. (It's no problem on the router because the MAC address is used on the internet port only...).
Of course, you have to remember all this. If at some later time you connect a different computer directly to the modem (e.g. you have connection problems and you want to find out what's wrong) you may "lock" in a different MAC address for your connection and you'll have to wait again to regain the connection for a different device.
But again: there is absolutely no need to use the clone function if you have a working internet connection through your router.

Wi-fi MAC address is invalid

Hi, i have a netgear router and i tried to access the wi-fi. It said that the password was incorrect, yet it was. I tried registering the MAC address into the router, but apparently the address is invalid. My address is F0:B4:79:62:0B:50, is that address valid? and if not, what do i do?

ACE multiple mac-address for a single IP (solaris ipmp)

We are triing to load ballance smtp traffic to solaris mail servers that are using ip multipath in bridge mode configuration.Multipath is configured so that only one of the redundant interfaces replies to arp request. Therefore all of the traffic come to the solaris from the ACE on the primary interface, but solaris uses the secondary interface too with different mac address to answer.The load ballancing working correctly it does not matter if solaris answers the request with its primary (MAC known by ACE) or secondary interface (MAC not know by ACE). But if the solaris wants to create a tcp session that is not balanced but go through the ACE with secondary interface which mac-address is not know by ARP in the ACE, the packets are silently discarded. There is no logs about it.
Please if someone could know this behavior answer.

If you do a 'show np 1 me-stat '-socm'' you will see a counter catching the packet drops.
Drop [mac lookup fail]: 30 0
Drop [route lookup fail]: 14316 0
We can't setup connection for unknown mac-address or if we do not have a route.
We need to first learn the mac-address through the arp request/response mechanism.
This is during this process that the encap id is associated with the mac-address.
Without that encapid we can't create the connection to flow the traffic.
You can try to disable normalization to see if that could help, but I can't guarantee it.
