WAP4410N Strangeness in Bridge Mode

Hi There
I have setup 6 WAP4410N's so far in three pairs. Each pair is acting as a bridge.
While in bridge mode, and with the SSID Broadcast set to disabled, i am still able to see the default SSID (or whatever SSID i change it to) on my laptop when looking for a wireless network, and i can access them as if they were in Access Point mode. I cannot set security on this, as the bridge diesnt work then
Here are the details for one in particular, but all are the same hardware and software versions, so no upgrade path
Hardware Version:  Rev.12
Software Version:  2.0.0.5
Local MAC Address: 00:26:0B:DC:07:FE

Just to let you know, the firmware update for these devices has not worked for the bridge mode being dropped
However it has resolved the issue about the SSID being displayed, but just to reiterate, i have 2 WAP4410N on 2.0.0.12 that are constantly dropping the bridge used between them. There is no encryption or anything between the two units. I have another two units, in the exact same setup, but on 2.0.0.5, that are working perfectly.
We are now replacing these units, i doubt we will be using the 4410N product again i am afraid, it is a verty comprehensive device, but we cannot depend on it

  • AirPort Express in a bridge mode

I'm connected to ISP with ADSL router which has it's own NAT and DHCP. I had an idea to create WiFi network with AirPort Express (N), but AX's LAN connection never works.
I found a very strange steps that solve the problem:
    1. I set AX in a NAT mode. In this mode an option appears that allows to set Ethernet WAN-port speed = 10Mbit/full-duplex. The rest settings are meaningless. Then i save the configuration. After restart the AX is blinking amber with "Dual NAT" error (it's true!)
    2. Then I set AX in a bridge mode and save. After restart it lights green and works ok with internet functioning and DHCP from ADSL router working for WiFi clients as well.
But if i power off AX - then after powering on and booting the light is finally changing this way: 1 sec green, 1 sec amber, 1 sec off. And so on. The indicator on the ADSL router is turning on and off synchronously. Repeating steps 1 and 2 does the repair. I've tested it many times.
I have found no other ways to set AX in a bridge mode. The speed 10FD is critical - no other speeds work. Other devices are connected at auto mode and show the speed 100MBit/full duplex. The ADSL modem is ZXDSL 531B (it has internal WiFi, which i do not switch on)

It's not the right behavior. I suspect that your DSL router is a little buggy, because why else are you turning off its radio for a different one? But you could also try exchanging the Apple unit. It makes no sense that the Apple unit only runs in 10 Mbit mode. Have you looked online for firmware updates for both your DSL modem and your AX? That would be the best place to start. Oh, and try a different Ethernet port and a different Ethernet cable.
    Good luck!

  • Bridge mode and extended mode together?

I just received my new milk jug Extreme AC today, yay! I bought this in the hope that it might mitigate some of the reception issues I have been battling in my home. I currently have the 4th gen Extreme (the one with the hobbled radios) and the 3rd gen Express, and I would like to use the old Extreme in bridge mode while wirelessly extending to the Express from the old Extreme. (Yes, I would love to hard-wire but that isn't realistic right now.) Anyone have any success doing this, or any suggestions?

It wouldn't be a wireless daisy chain as I have infrastructure
Thanks for clarifying that, since it was not mentioned at all in your first post. We saw things like "wirelessly" and "I would love to hard wire, but....." and assumed (when we should not have) that you were talking about wireless for the network.
hardwire the two Extremes together with the AC doing the DHCP heavy lifting.
That would be best way to connect the two Extremes together. Set up the new "ac" Extreme as the main router, then connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the new Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the older Extreme.  The setup utility will practically configure everything for you.
I suppose I could do something similar with the Express but I am okay with the bandwidry tradeoff If it can wirelessly piggyback from one of the Extremes.
As long as the Express is located where it can receive a good quality wireless signal from whichever Extreme, that should work OK. Extending with the Express is a compromise deal no matter how you look at it.......since even if you decide to connect to the Express using Ethernet, the port on the Express will only handle 100 Mbps.
Strange as it seems, it is often better to take the bandwidth hit and extend using wireless  with the Express, since the signal will often be faster this way than using Ethernet.

  • Lose Wireless in Bridge Mode

Here is my setup. Cable modem - Dlink router - (xbox 360 and AEBSN split from Dlink router) - Windows Desktop - macbook connected wirelessly.
Everything was working great until I installed the Dlink router. I need the router where it is so I don't have to run an ethernet cable across my apartment.
My problem is that if I set the AEBSN to "share a public IP" my wireless works on my macook, but the xbox 360 does not connect to the network. If I switch the AESBN to "bridge mode" (which is the way I think it needs to be), I lose my wireless internet. The AEBSN does not report any problems, but webpages simply will not open.
I am far from a network guru, but I have tried messing with some different settings to no avail. I really don't know what else to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you need any other information please let me know.
    Jake

Another little bit of help. When I do switch the AESBN over to bridge mode the xbox 360 again sees my network.
I don't know what to do. I don't know what switching the AESBN to bridge mode would kill my wireless. Everything else works including the Windows desktop which is plugged into the AESBN. My airport is still giving off a signal and my macbook connects, I just can't open up any webpages. It seems strange.
    Thanks again.

  • Bridge mode nonfunctional when joined to wifi network?

I have noticed some strange behavior with 2 Time Capsules lately - one brand new, and one other one 6 months ago.
When joined to a wifi network, the TC will not talk to anything over the ethernet ports. Airport Utility won't find the TC over an ethernet cable and the TC will not pass a wired connection on to the wireless network (even though it appears to be in Bridge mode when joined to a wifi network).
All other wireless settings (wifi OFF, or creating/extending a wifi network) turn the ethernet ports back on.
Anyone else see this? Any solution?

    This is normal.
The Time Capsule performs no routing functions at all when it is configured to "join a wireless network", so the ethernet ports are not enabled in this setting. In effect, it becomes a wireless backup hard drive only.

  • How do I configure my Airport Extreme to work in Bridge Mode and provide specific IP addresses to clients

My Airport Extreme is working with an Airport Express to wirelessly extend my wireless network.  Both Airports are configured in Bridge Mode per the instructions I found on Apple's support site.  I want to assign a specific DHCP address to a wireless camera that is in range of the Extreme, but I understand that the Extreme needs to be in DHCP Only mode to do this.  But if I change the mode to DHCP Only, the Extreme will lose contact with the Express.  How can I get both functions to work - wireless network extension and specific DHCP addresses?

Then what device is providing DHCP? Only once device per subnet should be the DHCP server. One should be DHCP and NAT and the other in Bridge mode for most home setups. The unit with DHCP and NAT should be the one connected to your cable or DSL and the other set in Bridge mode only extends your network.
On the wireless config page set whichever you're using to extend your network to "Extend a wireless network" and give it the details of the network to which you're attaching it.

How do I clean up my new FIOS connection? I just cahnged ISP Fios and they reqquired a router of thier own in front of my AirPort Extreme. Since then I have blinking yellow light on the AirPort and AirPort utility keeps promting for an edit. Suggests canging from NAT to "Bridge mode". Obviuosly U have some internet or this post would not go anywhere, my knowledge base is not enought to feel comfortable with changing the settings. Correctly editing can be tricky, so how do I make necessary changes?

How do I clean up my new FIOS connection?
The FIOS router needs to be in Bridge Mode to prevent the Double NAT error from occurring when two routers are both fighting with each other for control of the network.
Unfortunately, the likely problem from the FIOS side is that FIOS support will either tell you that their router cannot be configured to operate in Bridge Mode, or if it can, they will not tell you how to do it.
But, it could not hurt to check with FIOS to see if anything might have changed recently in this regard, so your first call would be to FIOS support.
If you cannot change the FIOS router to Bridge Mode, the alternate plan would be to change the AirPort Extreme to Bridge Mode. If you are using the Guest Network feature on the AirPort Extreme at this time, that feature will not work correctly when the AirPort is set up in Bridge Mode.

  • New Airport Extreme in Bridge mode -- some devices have no internet access

I just bought a new Airport Extreme as my old one which was probably 7 years old required restarting every day. My setup is as follows: DSL cable modem to Linksys Router (for a long set of convoluted reasons, I can't remove this layer) and then Airport Extreme. This is how I had it set up with my old one. The only difference is I recently started looking into using "Back to the Mac" on MobileMe and in order for it to work, I set my new Airport Extreme to Bridge mode due to dual NAT. I have an iMac, PC, MBP, MBA, iphone 4, AppleTV and ipad. All was working fine last night when I set it up. 24 hours later, for some odd reasons, I can't have my PC accessing the wireless network at the same time. If I did, it would knock my iMac off the network and says some other device is using the same IP address. For a while, only my iMac (my main computer) can access it and even my iphone can't. At this very moment, my iphone, imac and MBP all have access to the wireless network. My MBA and iPad has no internet connection. I've restarted Airport Extreme, Linksys, and modem more than once... If I switch back to "Use Public IP Address" instead of Bridge mode, everything works except for "Back to the Mac"... Help!

Hey Bob, Thanks...I have already repeated that multiple times yesterday and today but to no avail. I tried to get into the Linksys router control panel but unfortunately we can't remember the username and password (the router is not mine). The make things even more complicated, the router is actually part of the internet package provided by the ISP and they use a PPPoE to log in. Theoretically, we could do a hard reset but the problem is the ISP will not release the PPPoE information unless we sign a long and complicated form saying we want to bypass their Linksys router. We can do that but this process will take days and weeks... Our ISP confirmed that the Linksys router is set to max out at 5 DHCP but we can only connect 3 machines at a time. They are coming out to take a look tomorrow but in the meantime I have reset the Airport Extreme to "Distribute a Public IP Address" mode which will allow access to all computers/devices. What's even more weird is that if I did the Bridge mode, it messes up the Linksys router's own network as well. We can't even just sign into that network... Any ideas why?

  • Access to Time Capsule in Bridge Mode from outside of the network

I have a Time Capsule with an external hard drive set up in bridge mode on my home network. The main router and DHCP server is an Actiontec MI424, and is specific to my ISP (Verizon, required for TV Guide info from Fios) so the Time Capsule's AirPort can't be used as the primary. I need to access the external hard drive from outside my network (I.E. the internet), but I'm having trouble figuring out which ports are required for Sharepoint to work.
So far I've forwarded 548, but I get an error "-36" when I try to connect from the outside. It works fine on the inside. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, JSD

The Express units can extend wireless on the TC or each other.. but they cannot extend wireless on the Asus anyway..
So the setup is Asus--TC (that has to be ethernet) The TC in bridge mode.
Then TC -- express can be done by ethernet in roaming mode as bob listed above or extend wireless.
I am guessing.. what model are the express units.. they are older Gen1 N model ??
IMHO the TC is simply no longer viable.. replace it with one express as the AP and extend it with the other Express.. see if that works better.
But I would be trying to use the wireless just from the AC66U.
I would also force the Asus back to 20mhz on the 2.4ghz band.. so you can provide adequate channel separation.. 40mhz wireless on 2.4ghz works poorly anyway because you have too much wifi .. there is very limited number of non-overlapping channels.. ie 3. 11, 6 and 1.

  • Why do I lose internet connection when I put airport extreme into bridge mode to correct Double NAT issue

I reset my airport extreme router the other day because I was too lazy to reset the password on my private network.
I have been reading the advice found on apple support communities and wide web, but the solutions do not solve any problems and often create new ones.
I'm regretting because everything was working just fine.
But I remember having this double nat error when I first set it up a few months back, but now I cannot resolve it.
I would live with the yellow light, but it seems that this double nat error is preventing my playstation 3 from connecting to the airport extreme.
When I put the aiport extreme into bridge mode, I loose all my wireless networks, even when I reboot the airport extreme and the modem.
I try rebooting the modem, then the airport. and vice versa. No internet.
I switch back to NAT/DCHP and the internet works fine on apple devices, but not the playstation 3, and I have the 1 Double NAT error.
I have a plain stock Motorolla modem and I can dial in and see settings (although nothing about NAT). I didn't see where to see them.
I tried setting the DHCP only but it said it didn't like the settings. is there a stock range i could be using?

I have a plain stock Motorolla modem and I can dial in and see settings (although nothing about NAT). I didn't see where to see them.
Exact model .. motorola make adsl, cable and probably wireless modems.. with some modems and some modem router.. we need exact info. What kind of broadband do you have?
I would note.. some of the motorola cable modems seem to have issues with the apple routers. If you are about due to change modems.. now is a good time.. not another motorola.
If the modem is a straight cable modem, the AE must be in router mode.. but you need to power down the cable modem. maybe for 20min so the new router can pick up the IP address.
You cannot use DHCP alone.. the ISP do not give you a block of IP addresses.
You cannot use bridge with a pure modem.. you will find it works.. but only to one device.
The only reason you get double NAT is the failure to pick up the public IP.
    Give the info required..
If you have trouble, I need the actual IP of the modem. the actual IP of the AE WAN port when plugged in. Screenshots are good.

  • Can a single Access Point support both bridge mode and Access Point mode at the same time

    Hi Guys
Does anyone know which access point can work in both bridge mode and AP mode ?
    Cheers

Well what are you trying to cover. If its really a large outdoor area, then look at the mesh AP. Those require a WLC. Autonomous or stand alone ap can perform bridging on one radio and client access on another. You can also look at AP that support indoor mesh that also controlled by a wlc. If your putting APs outdoors, then look at the outdoor mesh.
    Thanks,

  • How do I set up time capsule to just backup multiple macs on a wireless network without using the TC in the bridge mode?

I have an AT&T modem that serves as our home wireless network.  I wanted to backup up our computer data so I got a time capsule to back up our three household MACs.  After purchase, I found how that I needed to put the exising modem in "bridge mode" so the Time capsule would establish the network. Four frustrating hours later talking to 3 different people at Yahoo, I got the **** thing established.  It worked fine for 4 months - then a power failure forced me to repeat the process again.  I had to reestablish everything and it took another 4 hours.  After 6 months, another power failure forced me to go through the entire process again.  Now, of course, Yahoo is charging a fee to help you establish the TC as the network if you have one of their modems - and to make things interesting, they really don't understand MACs.  After 5 hours, in frustration, I gave up and asked the Yahoo folks to just put their modem back in as the network hub and I unplugged the Time Capsule.  Now after 3 months of looking at an expensive Time Capsule and searching the internet for help, I figured I try the Apple help network,
I just want to backup the data on my MACS.  I have a network in the house that works just fine.  How do I configure the TC to work as a backup on a wireless network?  It seems like it should be simple, but it isn't.  Can anybody help?

I have no idea about the modem and bridge mode (I don't do networking -- hopefully Bob Timmons, Tesserax, or one of the other networking gurus will drop in and address that).
But . . . you should be able to back up to the TC as long as it's on your network and recognized by your Macs.  I think being in bridge mode means it will be rather slow, but it should work.  Until/unless we hear otherwise, you might want to see #Q1 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.

  • I live in an apartment with supplied internet.  I have wireless network with no password.  I have a wall outlet that I can plug into.  When I plug in my TC I get a double NAT error.  I try bridge mode, but I can't get the internet to work.

Can I get an explanation of what bridge mode is?
Can I get suggestions on what I should do to use the TC as a wireless device to spread the same wireless device my apartment is broadcasting?
Can I get a suggestion on how to use the TC as a different wireless device with it's own password without access to the cable modem.  I only have access to a wall port.
I own many apple devices, iMac mid-2011, Macbook Air 2013, 2 ipads, and 2 iphones for the family, and Apple TV.
I want all my devices to be on a password related internet but the double nat on my TC makes weird things happen and slow.  I try bridge mode but the internet doesn't work.
I hope I have described this situation clearly enough.
    Thanks

I want all my devices to be on a password related internet but the double nat on my TC makes weird things happen and slow.  I try bridge mode but the internet doesn't work.
You building supplied internet is a cheap service that is without proper routable addresses..
Therefore to use more than one IP you MUST have double NAT.. sorry there is no choice..
Slow that is because you are sharing internet with every other person in the building.. get your own broadband service.
Bridge will not work.. it cannot work because the building only has private IP addressing. And they only give you a single address.
You can put a password on the wireless.. go to the airport utility and put in a password.
Other than that I don't understand what password you expect.
Can I get an explanation of what bridge mode is?
No NAT.. means the TC becomes a dumb Wireless AP and switch.. works fine with a cable modem router.. or any broadband router but useless with your building system.
Can I get suggestions on what I should do to use the TC as a wireless device to spread the same wireless device my apartment is broadcasting?
Double NAT, and set your own wireless names. There is no alternative.. sorry.
