Warm boot / MUP.sys hang - possible success

Hi,
This post is for information and to hopefully save a lot of pain from others suffering my problems.  However, this appears to be partly an XP software / drivers issue, so the causes of my problems may not be the same things as for others who are suffering the same symptoms.  However, I'd appreciate feedback from other people who have had similar problems.
I've been suffering regularly from warm (and cold) boot hangs - these occur after POST and RAID setup screens, and I either get a black screen or the Windows logo (part transparent).  When choosing safe or debugging mode, the problem always occurs after MUP.sys.  There is a big thread about MUP.sys hangs at Annoyances.com, which identifies a number of possible causes / solutions, many of which appear (to me) to be unlikely.  These include:
1) Problems with USB2.0 (conflicts or a lack of power) - Remove USB devices and try to boot again
2) Problems with Power distribution (either a weak power supply or poor power distribution across the board causing instability in either memory, Processor, or USB)  - Solution may be to up core voltage slightly.
3) The Windows XP setup used an "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" instead of one of the other options - either change the setting or toggle (enable / disable) the ACPI setting on your mobo (Note, articles I have seen do not recommend changing these settings, but it seems that both Hardware and Software need to match ACPI settings (on or off) for it to boot)
4) Issues with the BIOS - try setting to defaults / adjusing various settings
5) Software installation / drivers causing conflicts.  - Appears possible, but is certainly not clear-cut.  [Note: My boot issues often get worse after I install something new]
6) Miscellaneous others (including cluttered drives, virus infestation, etc)
At one point this evening, I simply left my PC in its "hung" state, and came back to it later.  Eventually (after more than 1/2 hr, I believe) the machine DID boot into Windows, but my SATA RAID array had disappeared from my disk list (I have XP installed on a normal IDE partition, and use a RAID array for programmes & media files).
It has proved of great help to me to ensure I had the "Bootlog" setting enabled.  This writes a file to ntbtlog.txt in the windows directory, and you can sometimes interrogate this to see where the boot was failing.  Of course, other times XP never gets to write to the file, soit can prove useless.  In my case, the log showed the system apparently failing at the "processor" installation, with good boots usually showing "Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\AmdK8.sys" immediately after MUP.sys, while bad boots showing "Did not load driver ACPI Uniprocessor PC" immediately after MUP.sys.
This does not provide infallible evidence that it is *that* driver that is the problem, but it may be an indication.
The issue of missing my SATA RAID disk also made me check those drivers, and I noted that the NVidia 4.24 XP RAID and IDE driver were dated 13/1/04, which was identical to that in my System32/Drivers directory.  However, I then saw that the MSI 5.03 drivers were more recent - the IDE drivers in that distribution are dated 3/6/04.
This confused me as I had already installed the 5.03 drivers (the install programme initially "hung" on the SW drivers, and I had to run in Safe mode under "Windows 2000 compatibility" in order to make it run).  I was therefore a bit annoyed to find that the IDE drivers had not "taken".
I therefore browsed to the directory and chose "install" from right-clicking the XXX.inf files.  However, this also made no difference, and my System folders stubbornly maintained the 13/1/04 drivers despite a reboot and another try to install using the main MSI / NVidia install programme.
In the end, I manually selected each IDE and RAID device from device manager and forced a driver update, pointing the update programme at the MSI driver directory.  This finally caused the driver update (which does appear to have sorted out some of my problems).
However, I still had some boot failures, and took Creative's advice ( http://dmzweb4.europe.creative.com/htmlhelp/general/acpi.htm ) and downgraded my "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" driver to an "Advanced configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC".  In hindsight I am not certain this was the correct move, as it appears to be a one-way process (without doing a re-install of Windows) and is not recommended by microsoft (see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=309283 ).
I also considered the possibility of the processor not getting enough juice (should be unlikely with a 33A 12V power supply) and I upped the core voltage to 1.55.
I have had a boot hang since the voltage was upped, so I'm not convinced of its help.  However, with all 3 "solutions" applied, I have had 4 good boots now. I'm hopeful the problem will at least be helped, if not solved.
Anyone got any additional helpful thoughts?
Cheers,
David

I am having this exact issue and I have no idea what to do!
When I restart, (warm boot) I will often hang after POST.
When I cold boot, I never hang after POST.
When I get to the windows loading, I get the windows logo, but faded.  (It changes from black to the Windows logo, and it dies somewhere inbetween.)
About 1 in 5 boots I will work.
I'm using the latest drivers for everything, and this is a fresh install of XP SP2 onto a RAID 0 array.

  • Can't start in Safe Mode or any mode - hangs on mup.sys driver

Can anyone help me. I have done a few searches on the internet and see that this is a familiar problem. I was using a usb storage key and someone removed it without doing so safely - my laptop then froze and the only thing I could do was turn it off at the on/off key.
Now I can't do anything - it just repeatedly goes to the same page saying that as there was a problem choose a way to start - I have chosen every single one and nothing - it loads up until this driver mup.sys and then just goes straight to the same page again. I have run out of ideas.
    Can anyone help?
I am trying to avoid the recovery disc as I really don't want to lose my work yet but realise that may have to happen, mind you I have read reports that it still hangs even when you try that option.
    Thank you Rachel

Hi Rachel it sounds very much like a problem I had with my laptop a while ago. It boots up for 3 seconds, blue screens and back to the start. Unfortunately there's very little you can about it but backup your files and reinstall Windows using the product recovery DVD. To back up your files you need to get access to your files using a bootable CD/Floppy with NTFS support For this I recommend the following:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ - BartPE (needs an XP CD with SP1+). BartPE boots directly from your CD-ROM it provides a basic Windows environment with networking LAN support and external USB flash drive.
http://www.knoppix.net/ - Knoppix bootable Linux CD (sometimes found included with computer magazines) this runs directly from your CD-ROM and like BartPE it also provides networking and USB flash drive support. If you are new to linux you might find difficult to use at first. However the KDE desktop provides useful shortcuts labeled: hda1 (harddrive) sda1(flash drive when connected)
    good luck.

  • Not able to recover and restore Lenovo V100 ; restarts after hanging at line mup.sys in safe mode.

Not able to recover and restore Lenovo V100 (WinXP professional) ; restarts after hanging at line mup.sys in safe mode.
Problem started occurring suddenly after restart of the laptop.
Windows XP start page (With dots moving) came up and I tried to restart the laptop in Safe mode.
It stopped at a line mup.sys and after a while restarted automatically.
Tried with inbuilt lenovo recovery and restore option.. but in vain...
each screen is very very slow.. I tried patiently (With restore back to factory settings options) but finally I got message that restore failed.
Can any body please help to me to resolve the Issue. I'm new to Tokyo and dont know any servicing center here :-(...
Any body from Tokyo ? can you tell me where the service center is here in Shinagawa?

  • ATI Graphics card not detected on cold boot, works on warm boot

    Hi All,
I hope you can help me out with this.
    I'm using Radeon HD7850 with ATI-Catalyst.
The issue is, if I do a cold boot (physically turn off the power, turn back on) the system won't boot into X, only tty.
At this point, a reboot works fine.
Or if I don't turn off the power, just shutdown and reboot (warm boot), it works ok.
Here's the Xorg log on cold boot:

Do I need to set AutoAddDevices off?

    Thanks for the reply!
The open source driver doesn't support my card yet. I tried installing it first since its the recommended driver, but Xorg couldn't detect any display at all.
It seems the PCI BusID is not being read from the xorg.conf file. There's auto detection everytime the PC boots.

  • Bootcamp MUP.sys windows xp issue

I have been running my imac with snow leapard and bootcamp with a bootcamp partition running windows xp pro.
This has been stable for a few months with no problems. I have my business accounts on this as the accounts package wont work under a mac os.
When in the accounts yesterday windows froze and needed a restart by switching the imac off and back on - when it booted it got as far as the windows screen then restarted going to the safe mode (f8) option screen - I have tried safe mode, I have tried safe mode with networking, tried last known good config etc) all to no avail.
It gets to mup.sys then restarts - googling has some answers on this mainly down to either usb devices attached (I have just keyboard and mouse attached) or hard disk driver issues.
I have even tried to boot from windows xp disc in order to reinstall or fix the windows installation- however it gets as far as press any key to continue - but doesnt recognise the keyboard in order to receive an input so....
help and suggestions please - I am trying to avoid wiping the bootcamp partition and then reinstalling if at all possible.

There is an Apple Boot Camp forum
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237
    Some support articles
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
and of course latest drivers etc that Apple has.
As with any OS, a backup plan is more than just handy. There is WinClone or commercial Casper 6 so you have a system image and can avoid the reinstall.
Not sure why or what happened but hard shutdowns tend to corrupt file systems and directory. chkdsk comes to mind, as does system file checker.
no idea why (wired usb) keyboard isn't working.
And I would create a 2nd user account, always handy in case you can't log into your primary, or leave your admin acct alone and work from non-admin acct for day to day.
With XP facing end of support and patches etc I'd take it as a good time to upgrade.

  • Mup.sys

    Hi,
About 2 weeks ago my computer I tried to install longhorn onto my computer, it all messed up and i ended up not being able to boot into anything, so i formatted the drive and reinstalled windows.
Anyway, this morning i went to turn my computer on (changed nothing yesterday) and once windows starts loading the computer just resets and it starts again.  I tried booting into safe mode only to find that it stops on the file Mup.sys - once it loads up that one it just resets and the same thing happens over again.
I saw on some sites that this can be related to hardware hence the post here, my specs are:
    MSI 6590 V1 (KT4 Ultra)
    Athlon XP 2400+
    2*512mb Samsung PC2700
    Albatron Geforce 4 ti4600
Antec file server case with 430W power supply
Plus modem and network card in PCI slots
Water cooled so its not heat issues
Has anyone got any ideas at all as to what has caused it for a second time?  The symptons were exactly the same last time and i really dont want to go reinstalling windows again
    thanks in advance
    tingle

sfc.exe can be found in the c:windowssystem32 directory; can you enter that directory from the console (type: "c:", then "cd windowssystem32", then "sfc /scannow" - all without the "" of course  )  )?

  • Cold boot but won't warm boot

    I have a system with a 648 Max MSI-6585 Mainboard.
It works fine once its running
    BUT
    it won't warm boot.
If I try to reboot or sometimes even power it up normally
I just get an initial beep and not the final POST beep
The D-Bracket lights say it is at the floppy seek stage.
    To boot it I can:
    (a) Turn the power off at the wall
    (b) disconnect the ATX power from the mainboard
    (c) clear the CMOS
    (a) usually works, (b) generally works if (a) doesn't and if neither of them helps (c) always works.
If I write ANYTHING to CMOS (ie change BIOS settings or even if Windows sets the clock) then I HAVE to clear the CMOS.
This problem developed BEFORE I flashed the BIOS but I ave now flashed it (twice) to v 1.5.  No problems with the flashing, and I'm experienced at flashing bios's.
    Any ideas?
    Stats:
    Using a P4 2.4 GHz CPU
With 512 Megs PC3200 DDR RAM
    Hercules ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 7500
    Hercules Firewire DV card.
120 Gig 7200 rpm ATA 100 WD HDD with 8 meb cache
    Pioneer Slot-in DVD
    Aopen 52x CD-RW
    Realtek Ethernet Card.

Since the last post I tried the system with different PSU's, different ram and different video - different everything in effect.  Eventually I gave up and took the motherboard back for replacement.  The new board is HT ready but I have HT disabled as the CPU is not HT capable.
The new motherboard worked at first then started doing the same thing.
I notice that when the cmos is cleared it detects the CPU as a 1.8 and not a 2.4 GHz.  I have had some success in getting the system to reboot by changing some memory settings.  Even though I am using PC3200 DDR RAM it seems to boot more often if I set the RAM at 333 MHz instead.
I have also set the performance timing to safe and altered the CAS setting and another  timing (MT I think?)
The system rebooted with these a few times but has since reverted to lights on, no action mode, with the D Bracket lights stuck at 'floppy initialisation'or sometimes 'memory'.
I am at my wits end with this problem.

  • MS-6580 - Warm Boot Fails

Can anyone explain why this MB won't warm boot when overclocked?  It doesn't seem to matter if I OC mildly or aggressively...any OC at all and I have to perform a cold boot to bring the system back online.  I read something about GBIT mainboard incorrectly lowering the CPU voltage down to its default 1.5v on a warm boot resulting in similar hangs; only on a cold boot would the proper voltages be restored.  Could this be what's happening here?
D-Bracket indicates "Memory Detection Test" Failed.  I verified that DDR voltage is at 2.7.  Tried juggling the DIMMS around.  Tried with one alone; then the other.  No change in behavior.  The only thing that has any impact that I can tell is not to overclock the FSB *at all* - up or down.  That seems a bit unreasonable.  Memory is Corsair CMX512-3200C2PT (x2).
    Thanks,
    J

I've had my vCore set as high as 1.70v, although it really doesn't need much more than 1.55v to run at 2.7Ghz.  My experiments with adjusting the vCore, while it does affect overall system stability, it has no impact on this particular problem with warm booting.
    Temps @ 2.7 and 1.55v - 39-42C Idle, 48-50 Load
    Temps @ 2.7 and 1.65v - 46-48C Idle, 58-60 Load
    Cheers,
    J

  • Windows 7 32bit - will not load on warm boot.

I have the same problem on two PCs. They are both HP Workstations xw4600. I have the latest BIOS (786F3 1.22 A) and have tried with the older BIOS as well before upgrading. They will not start Windows 7 with a warm boot (restart). They just repeatedly restart over and over again. I have to turn off the computer and cold start in order to log into Windows, which after doing so Windows works just fine.
    UPDATE:
I solved this issue by fixing the startup with the Windows 7 disk (took a couple of tries)) now it works normally.

  • Thinkpad T520 - 4239CTO cold vs warm boot menu (Windows 7 Pro)

I have a curious situation. I replaced the hard disk in the above named Thinkpad with and Intel 530 SSD (250 MB). The OS is a fully patched Windows 7 Pro. Just for the record, to ensure full details are revealed: The new disk was, as recommended on the Lenovo site, activated as a GPT disk, the original was MBR. The BIOS option is Legacy boot (MBR) or UEFI (no MBR) or both. If I selected the UEFI only, I could not boot to or install the OS from the recovery disks. If I selected both, with legacy first or UEFI first, the recovery DVD's would boot and the inbstall would proceed without issue. This si where the trouble starts: Upon completion of the install, a number of anomalies appear. Regardless of the legacy/UEFI setting on the BIOS, if I warm boot, the options menu appears (tabbed with boot options and application options). I have no way out of this as another warm boot just returns me to that menu. If I cold boot, the proper boot sequence occurs and Windows loads properly, but only if the BIOS is set to BOTH for Legacy/UEFI. If it is set to either Legacy only or UEFI only on a cold boot, I get the option menu with the boot/applications tabs but the applications tab now includes the BIOS menu. If I cold boot with both Legacy and UEFI enabled, it boots to Windows and disk manager reveals that the disk is GPT but it appears to have an MBR. My conclusion is that the BIOS is confused because the disk is in some sort of amorphous MBR AND GPT state or something. I am concerned about aggressively pursuing one path or another (forcing a GPT disk by removing the MBR, for example) and getting into more trouble. I wonder if the Lenovo factory recovery disks are incapable of installing on a GPT disk and if that is the issue. Any comments or help is appreciated. Thank you

    Hi Ran,
    Thanks!
    I haven't tried it yet.
In the meantime i did more testing and found out that even with only Power Manager version 2.41a installed the latest Intel Pro wireless driver also supported by lenovo is not stabel and FN-F5 or windows network connection also fails to switch the radio back on after a reboot when the radio has been turned off first ;-(
    Reading http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-67283
over and over I decide to revert back to the old Intel wireless driver listed on this page.

  • "No Sound" on Cold Boots with X-Fi (warm boots or mode changes fix

I recently built a system with the following specs and the computer is ?Cold Booting? with ?no sound? in Entertainment Mode or ?Noise? for sound if the X-Fi is cold booted from Game Mode. A warm boot or Mode change usually fixes it but the problem comes back upon cold booting. The computer Specs are: Windows XP Pro. (SP2)AMD X2 4800+ASUS A8N5X nForce4 Motherboard (latest BIOS)Corsair TWINX2048-3500LLeVGA 7900GTX (latest Drivers)OCZ 600W GameXstream PSSound Blaster X-Fi Platinum (latest Drivers, etc.)
I have no IRQ Conflicts and the onboard sound is ?disabled?. The problem seemed to appear after a week or so working with the system. Everything else is perfect on the system and it'ss very frustrating to have this issue. I am not convinced that the sound card is bad, I think it'ss a Creative driver/software issue. Does anyone else have this problem and or is there a fix ?
    !!! PLEASE HELP !!!

    EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM HERE!
I havent got another motherboard to test my x-fi xtreme music on, but it's a very frustrating problem, if i boot up from cold the soundcard is either not recognised or is recognised but there's no sound output.
My motherboard is ASUS P5E3 Pro,
    Memory: 8GB OCZ DDR3 600
    Cpu: x9650 extreme @ stock 3.0GHz
    Psu: Coolermaster 850w modular
Gfx: HD 5770 (will be changing this to a HD4890 soon as it's rubbish)
Ive tried all sorts of combinations to try and get this soundcard working properly, stick of ram, etc... NOTHING WORKS AND IM ANNOYED!
Ive played about with just about every bios setting i can find (theres a lot on this board) and still no luck, i've got the latest bios flashed and everything is upto date, as a musician this problem is very irritating, having to reboot the computer about 3 times to get the sound working! even then theres problems with sound drop-outs.
Makes no difference if i use windowsXP or windows7 the problem still remains, i might ask asus to make a bios update for this problem because im not sure if creative have the answers.

  • Boot Camp Assistant hangs at partitioning process?

    Hello,
I'm trying to install Windows on my Mac Pro. But when I run the Boot Camp assistant and assign the Windows partition, the Boot Camp Assistant hangs at the process of partitioning. The progress bar just keeps on moving, but it wont finish the partitioning.
    Screencap link: www.laspalmas.nu/hang.jpg
Sorry, the OS language is in finnish but "Osioidaan levyä..." = "Disk partitioning..."
Does anyone have advice, why does this endless hang happen at this point?
    Thanks for the replies,
    Lauri

    BACKUP before you start.
    Repair your drive.
Would help to know how much of the free space is actually in a large enough unfragmented single chunk.
You may need to backup / initialize / restore.

  • Different cpu temps after warm boot

After cold boot my CPU temp is:
    Load: 46ºC
Idle: 39ºC (cool & quiet enabled)
After warm boot temp drops to:
    load: 42ºC
idle: 35ºC (cool & quiet endabled)
    I'm using bios 1.5b2.

That however is not correct for everyone. MSI is aware of the problem and will be working on it in a future version of the Bios.

  • MOVED: MSI P45 Platinum won't post after warm boot

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.

    Thanks for the reply DougKmcse
I have no trouble with the overclocking since this is only a minor overclock (2.8GHz), the only problem I have with this is it gets stuck at restart. With that 2.8GHz OC, i have the vcore @ 1.285v which was stable running 1hr Prime95. I just can't understand why it gets stuck during warm boot.. might try to experiment (400x6 = 2.4GHz) when I get home from work to see if the 400 FSB is causing this. And yes, I agree with you that it would be easier to use a lower FSB with a higher multiplier. I just wanted to try having 400 and having a perfect 1:1 ratio. I have some data suggesting a 1:1 (@ 400:400) is better than 1:1.2 or any other divider. I used Everest cache & memory bandwidth benchmark to test this. I got lower "ns" testing my RAMs (PC6400 DDR2 800) during 1:1 FSB:Ratio (400:400) vs 1:1.2 (333:400)
