WARNING!!!!! 10.5.2 UPGRADE KILLS ENTIRE USER BASE!!!!!!!!!!

Greetings,
A strong word of caution. I've reproduced this three times on my Quad G5 Server. Did an Erase and Install under Standard Install setting. Configured all users. Services worked properly. Then, I performed the OS X Server 10.5.2 Update. After reboot, the ONLY account that can log in is ROOT. There are NO OTHER USERS IN THE DIRECTORY STRUCTURE!!!!! All user data is GONE.
Repeated the install. Did a Standard Install. Configured users. Promoted the server into Advance Mode using Server Admin. Performed OS X Server 10.5.2 Update. After reboot. All users are gone.
I'm now on attempt number 4. This time, after promoting into Advanced mode, I'm exporting the entire user base to XML to see if I can't fix it after it kills my users again without having to reinstall.
I'm telling you people, this is really bad. I've been administering Apple servers for 15 years. I have NEVER lost a single user in an upgrade.

I had the same problem as well but it happen before the 10.5.2 update.
I thought it was because I was switching from Server Settings to Server Admin and promoted the server to Open Directory Master.
But after a fresh re-install it did happen again.
I never been able to replicate the exact same behavior twice.
So I never experienced the loss of the user database after an upgrade but only after changing settings.
It is true however that before going live I had to setup my database and teamserver 4 times.
The server is now stable (AFP "just" need to be restarted regulary) and I'm happy with.
Anyways I always follow those rule in order to be safe:
• I never apply a Friday released update straight on unless if I want my week-end ruined. I usually wait the Monday, then forgot about it up until 2 weeks after release.
• I like Time Machine but it takes forever to recover. So I clone regulary my boot disk with SuperDuper.
• I usually always apply a combo server update instead of a delta update.
• Since I've made quite a lot of changes on teamserver I cannot apply anymore any update without knowing excatly what's inside. So I have to apply the update first on my test machine. Then sync my changes with the new files and do more tests.
I think it's fair to think that an update can break a server. I don't see anything wrong with that. Maybe because that's the way computers works since I started to use them.
What's NOT OK is to have to record manually yourself the list of all the files who changed and figuring out yourself what changed. Apple doesn't do a good job at communicating what their update are doing.
Good luck for 10.5.3. I still can't wait for it!

Just installed the 10.4.3 upgrade.
After the upgrade was done I noticed WebMail settings was back to default.
So I had to set everything up again.
But what makes me angry is all the users preferences has been reset aswell.
I haven't read anything about this before I upgraded.
Makes me angry!

Ok, I upgraded to 4.2 and deleted all previous backups, so I know I'm screwed untill the next update.
I've synced, backed up, restored from backup and still no "Visual Voicemail".
My voicemail only works if I restore the phone to original settings. But if I do that, I loose important data in my apps. As soon as I "Restore From Backup" I loose my "Visual Voicemail".
If I reset my voicemail password with AT&T, I get the screen to set up a new password and greeting in Visual Voicemail. When I go through these steps I get the spinning wheel "Saving".
It never saves, and I get an alert that says it can't connect to voicemail.
I can set up voicemail by dialing "1", but then all I see is a blank screen in my "Visual Voicemail".
I've also tried a full reset of my voicemail with AT&T.
I even got a new SIM card. That didn't work.
Can anybody figure this one out???

Well, thats the first time I've been told that after a week of phone calls. Maybe it's possible.
I forgot to backup my phone before I upgraded to 4.2. Oops!
When I noticed my Visual Voicemail was gone I tried to backup but ran out of memory.
So I deleted previous backups to make more room. It backed up fine after that.
I don't think it ran out of memory during the update, but maybe it did.

Can 10.5 Upgrade Kill a Powerbook G4?

Hello,
Powerbook G4 1Ghz, 1GB memory - was running 10.4.10 with no problems. Tried to upgrade to 10.5. I could never get the upgrade to finish (kernel panics, core dumps, etc.). Tried every option, including a complete erase of the hard drive and fresh install. The upgrade would always crash mid-way through. Finally gave up and decided to go back to 10.4.
Now I can't even get the 10.4 install to work. It crashes too (kernel panic). I've erased the disk several times including a complete wipe using disk utility.
I've done the alt-option-P-R reset several times and have also reset the PMU. Nothing works.
Is it possible that the 10.5 upgrade killed my machine or is it just a coincidence? The machine is pretty old.
Any suggestions welcomed.
btw, is this something that the Genius Bar at an Apple Store could fix for a fee?

It ***. Out of Applecare, and new logic boards cost as much as your lappy goes for on Craigslist. I hardly think Apple will pony up to fix our hardware - or admit to it.
Before giving up, I'd try an open firmware reset.

That took care of mine. Of course, it didn't live much longer after that. You may have better luck.
I'd run the Apple Hardware Test (hold down option while booting from your original install disks that came with it) a bunch of times, and see what you come up with.

Brooks lansing if you create a new Administrator account does the same issue occur? If so then it is likely that there is a file permission failure and file permissions have been set for the existing Users instead of the groups they belong to.
Have you removed and reinstalled Photoshop Elements 11? This may reset the file permissions to the correct state to allow it to work under new accounts.

Okay, mine now works here is what I did.
plug in the iPhone, iPad etc
in iTunes select the phone or iPad
Under Summary uncheck "Sync with this....."
Under "Music" uncheck the "Sync Music"
Let it remove all the songs, dont worry it will come back no problems.
Once that is all done all the music on the phone or ipad should be gone.
Now check them both back on and everything should copy back onto it.
Working now !!!!!

Killing a user session?

Running Essbase 11.1.2 ASO cube...occassionally, when I attempt to kill a user session in EAS, I get the status of "terminating". I try to kill the session using Maxl commands to no avail. I know as a last resort to use task manager to end the ESSSVR.exe process -but I have been burned by this in the past as the database gets corrupted. Does anyone know of a safe method to kill these "terminating" sessions? and why are some easy to kill through EAS and others are not?

You may find the following entries in the application log which means there were hung sessions.

However, it is difficult to say why these errors occur exactly. Usually Errors like this occur because there are still processes running in the memory when the next transaction is called.
A vast majority of errors can be avoided by integrating pauses and by unloading the application and then reloading it after each calculation or member/data load.
When you kill a session from the EAS Console for a particular user, you need to wait for some time before the process gets compeltely killed, which perform a restructure or data load or data aggregation. You need to wait untill the process gets killed completely before performing any operations on the application.
Never allow any other user to modify outline or update data whenever the Calculation is running. This can cause the application to go into a hang state and whenever you try to kill and if it fails, then you need to kill the ESSSVR process manually. For instance, follow the below guide lines when running Calc scripts:
1) Never allow any other user to indulge any activity on the application. It is preferred to schedule the batch script as a nightly process, if it is a large operation to avoid user interruption.
2) In case of hangups, use the UNLOCKOBJECT command (ESSCMD) to first unlock all the objects that are accessed by the script (Check the technical reference guide for the command ).
3) Next log off the user using the LOGOUTUSER command, but here if you have multiple sessions of the same user logged in the application, all the sessions will be logged off. In this case use the EAS console and kill all the requests of the user first and then kill the session of the user.
Suggestion:
Try to execute the following MaxL commands as batch script and check if the execution of Calculation script is successful:
spool on to 'D:\output\backup.log';
login admin mypassword on localhost;
alter application <app_name> load database <db_name>;
alter system logout session on database <db_name>;
Shell Sleep 30;
alter system kill request on database <db_name>;
Shell Sleep 30;
alter application <app_name> disable commands;

alter application <app_name> enable commands;

exit;

Upgrading a standard user to administrator

Is it possible to upgrade a standard user to administrator status or to change administrators from one user to another? I bought a used MacBook running Yosemite and need to make myself the admin. Thanks for any suggestions.

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

When using Craigslist I keep getting this error: Warning! Domain mapping upgrade for this domain not found. Nothing I do works to fix this.

When I use Craigslist, my personal list of things being sold, and I try and renew my listings, I periodically get this: "Warning! Domain mapping upgrade for this domain not found. Please log in and go to the Domains Upgrades page of your blog to use this domain." Usually rebooting my computer makes it go away for a short time, but today that isn't working and following the commands on the warning doesn't work either...is this truly a firefox issue? How do I fix it.

Clear the cache and the cookies from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Relocate entire User Directory

Looking for an official statement from Apple on the option of relocating the entire Users directoy in OSX ( lion + )
I'd like to partition the boot drive and relocate the User Directory to the second partition.
( need a method that ensures new accounts are created in the preffered location automaticaly )
Partitioning the boot drive will make it possible to reimage the machine without touching the User's data.
Our image evolves and our user's move between systems - this would save a lot of time and server space.
An alternative to the per user System Preffrences / Users & Groups / ( specific user ) / Advanced options ( choose path )
this method is per user ( involves many steps ) not great for mass deployments.
I have used a symlink ( that works fine as far as I can tell ) perhaps their is another way I am unaware of?
dose the above update the path to a file somwhere in the System ? maybe we can modify that file for all future users..?
or somthing via the "/System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj" ?

My knowledge of Symlinks comes from being a Unix file system developer for 16 years (several different *nix implementations, but none of them Mac OS X ), plus 2 years Unix file system support, and 7 years network file systems developer (although there were no symlinks in this network protocol ).
I've paid attention to how symlinks seem to behave on Mac OS X, and their difference from Mac OS X Aliases.
While the Finder does use an alias icon for symlinks, the finder seems to use symlinks just fine, and most other applications seem to just ask the file system to navigate the path, and let the file system worry about the details.
But that is my observations. If you insist on official, then you will need to continue your search.

MTS, Killing the user session?

My db is using MTS connection, while i kill the user session by using alter system kill session, the ever killed process goes to Pseudo status....even i can't kill from unix level because it uses dispatchers...
is there any way i kill the user processes in MTS, with out going to pseduo status

If an active session cannot be interrupted (it is performing network I/O or rolling
back a transaction), the session cannot be terminated until the operation completes.
In this case, the session holds all resources until it is terminated. Additionally, the
session that issues the ALTER SYSTEM statement to terminate a session waits up to
60 seconds for the session to be terminated. If the operation that cannot be
interrupted continues past one minute, the issuer of the ALTER SYSTEM statement
receives a message indicating that the session has been "marked" to be terminated.
A session marked to be terminated is indicated in V$SESSION with a status of
KILLED and a server that is something other than PSEUDO.

Kill knotify4 = user cannot logout/shutdown

I'm having a slightly annoying issue with knotify4, I noticed that if this process is killed, the user that owned that process can no longer log out or shutdown using the KDE buttons or even calling the qdbus command directly. I'm using OSS and would like to suspend the system when not in use.
Using the the script from [wiki]Open_Sound_System#Suspend_and_Hibernation[/wiki] will kill knotify4 and the system will not suspend if it is not killed. Upon resume, knotify4 restarts fine, but the problem persists. Is this just me, or have I found/confirmed a bug?
