Warning about exceeding your Internet Usage

I just want to share a warning with other forum users. I am on Option 1 with a 10Gb limit per month. This has never been a problem. This month I had a friend staying who asked to use the BBC iPlayer. I said "Sure - BT will send me an email when I get to 70% utilisation, so go ahead." Well, today, out of interest I rang the call centre to ask how much I had used this month and I was horrified when they told me that usage was 36Gb. When I asked why I had not received an email I was told that an email had been sent - to a @btinternet email address that I have never used. (This email address was apparently set up when I started using the BT service, but I have never used it.) But BT regularly emails me to my "normal" email address, so it is not as if they did not have a correct email address. So my advice is to get on to the call centre and check exactly which email address they will email when your usage reaches 70% of your limit otherwise you could have a nasty shock.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

 I am new to the Home Hub system and so far all seems to be going okay. Internet speed does seem, if anything, slightly better than my old wired system although it did take me a bit of fiddling to sort out the annoying habit of automatically logging me onto the internet everytime I switched on my PC.  BT helpdesk were of zero help when I asked them and that unfortunate experience has drawn me to this forum rather than phoning BT with my question.
I too am on the 'Option 1' deal but am concerned that I may be hit with punitive charges if my usage exceeds 10 Gbs (whatever that is!). Following the earlier helpful comment that the usage should be shown on my account details I logged in to check.  Despite having this new system set up for several weeks now, everything is shown as 'nil' even though I am on the internet everyday for a couple of hours and ditto with one of my children.
Anyone got any ideas why nothing nothing is shown? Will it show only the cost that I have incurred after the first month?
Also, does anyone know if I can upgrade my Option to a higher usage limit when I am just a few weeks into an 18 month contract? I don't want to do this unless I really have to as I got a seriously good 'back to BT' limited offer deal when I signed up for the Option 1.
Hopefully, BT will email to my main email address if or when the usage gets a bit close to my limit. I have tried on several occassions to access the btinternet account that I was given when I signed up but it doesn't recognise me so I gave up on it.

    If I leave Safari running in the background with zero tabs open, does it still use up bandwidth?  Do I have to quit the application each time I am done to avoid exceeding my internet usage/host quota?  I'd rather not have to since quitting the application and restarting it when I need to will quickly become tedious, but if that saves me on bandwidth usage, I'll do it.  Thanks!

    Have you experience a problem about losing your internet after downloading itunes? How to fix it?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
    Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
    Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
    All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • Internet usage amount

    According to your internet usage meter, my usage has been very high.  This happens even when the computer is turned off.  What else can be using my internet?

    I've seen people walk away from streaming devices like you tube, netflix and similar and it keeps streaming with the TV off and keeps using data.  Mobile devices registered to your account can use data when they are out and about town connecting to the xfinitywifi hotspots.   Unplug the modem / gateway for 24 hours and see if it keeps going up.

  • Internet Usage Limits

    I exceeded my internet usage limit last month. Where can I find something to track my usage? (The various widgets available on the apple website all seem to be for specific providers, and BT isn't one of them.)

    I've found an answer - SurplusMeter will track usage over a month so you can see where you are in relation to your limit.

  • Internet Usage Overage Charges

    Hey Tom,Are you actually a real live person? After sending a complaint to you regarding your Internet Usage overage charges I have received emails from no less than 5 different people who claim they’re going to assist me with my problem.Since none have, I finally filed a complaint with the Georgia Public Service Commission regarding Comcast/Xfinity billing customers for Internet Usage over the 300GB limit without providing data on where the customer’s traffic is coming from to cause the overage.I would think in today’s heightened security environment, your company should be monitoring traffic coming into and leaving your network to prevent or mitigate any malicious attacks. So me asking for the data (sites making up my Internet usage) shouldn’t be something you can’t provide.I assume you protect yourself and have your flunkies reach out to customers because your customer service is rated the worst and you must have thousands of complaints coming to you on a daily basis.

    I get the warning "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this web page from running scripts or ActiveX controls ..." when running the applet whose code is included below. How can I stop the warning from appearing, it is annoying?
    * @(#)*****.java

              g.setColor (hej);
              g.fillOval(100,100,500,400);
    }

    You can probably alter your Internet Explorer browser settings by going to the menu <tools><internet options><security> and change one or more of the settings. Be careful about decreasing your security too much. Also, dont expect end-users to lower thier security settings to run your code.

  • Is bell making a mistake about my internet usage?

    I checked my sympatico internet usage on the web.
    It said we had dowloaded 6.22 GB, and we had gone over our 2GB limit.
    The charge is 7.50 per additional GB, to a 30$ max. We reached the 30$ max.
    One problem:
    Neither dad or I can recall downloading that much. I don't think I could have done half of it, and he hasn't used his home computer much.
    A few days after this billing period started, I checked the usage. It was about 3GB. With a 1 megabit per second connection, this would have been hard to do, an I hadn't downloaded anything big.
    We don't use wireless, except my desktop computer can be used as a wireless router, but it has a password and hasn't been on enough for someone to be stealing our usage through wireless.
    Is there a way to check the total internet usage arch has used this past month?
    Is bell screwing me over?

    the file /sys/class/net/eth0/statistics/rx_bytes contains how many bytes I've downloaded since I've booted linux. It might be the same on your system if you use the eth0 interface.
    If your computer is always on, you could take the difference between end-of-billing-period bytes and beginning-of-billing-period to find how many bytes you downloaded in that month.
    If you shut down your computer often, you could write yourself a shutdown script that saves the amount of bytes to some file, e.g.
    #!/bin/sh
    cp /sys/class/net/eth0/statistics/rx_bytes ~/internet_usage/$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M)
    poweroff

  • Message that says: URGENT! Your version of Firefox is no longer protected against online attacks. Get the upgrade - it's fast and free! I clicked to download version,try to open it, get warning about viruses, coming from firefox?

    Is there always a warning about virus downloads for Firefox?

    "legitimate message" is not much to go on.
    I'd be only too happy to upgrade, but my end users are dependent on Java Initiator to load specific software interface to access Oracle database. that functionality is disabled in FF 3.6 and later...
    We aren't the hosts of the database, and our(my) pleas to the admins who host the third party front end to upgrade the JRE on the server are met with, "we're not going to reverse engineer their system..."
    So while I'm stuck at 3.5.x, i'd like to know what it is in 3.5.18 or 19 that makes upgrade so Urgent, and I haven't found guidance in support.mozilla.org.

  • Is it possible for someone to hack your internet a...

    Well, my boyfriend borrowed money from a friend on a game, and I am being threated by the person (from Ireland) saying that him and his friend ( who know a great deal about computers ) are going to somehow disconnect our internet. I use Windows 8, so I have an app that automatically signs me in without needing a username or password, and to sign in to this account when I go through the internet, I use "sign in with microsoft". but i can't remember the user name i had made, so I gave my email so Skype could send me my username. It says that my email isn't working, but I currently have it open. And when i try to change my email, it says that my password is incorrect. So obviously I think my account was hacked, password was changed, and now apparently my email doesn't work? And also i would like to know, if it IS possible to someone to disconnect your internet through Skype? And also PLEASE within the next two weeks, can someone who works for Skype PLEASE delete my account? It's extremely important to me and my family that this account just gets deleted.

    Certainly. If someone has hacked his Apple ID, they could use it on a different device, and could send messages as him. These messages would sync to his devices as well. Of course, use of an Apple ID on a different device causes a warning message to appear on all other devices using that Apple ID, saying that the Apple ID is being used on a new device. He may have simply dismissed that message without reading or understanding it and has forgotten all about it.
    Or, of course, he might have sent the messages and be trying to deny responsibility... Can't rule that out, but what he's saying is indeed possible.

  • 3.2 gigs of mobile internet usage in one day?

    Hello,
    Problem: Got my phone bill. 500 Australia Dollars. Phoned my provider. They say internet usage. On the 30th November, I used 3.2 gigs of internet. That's double my monthly allowance.
    So... how is this possible?
    First up, I'm not iPhone inept. I'm very cautious with my usage. I have wireless internet at home so I only go on the mobile network when I leave the house. 30th of November I went to work, where I can't use my phone, and came home.
    I set everything to not download using mobile networks (podcasts specifically). I've had my phone for 6 months and I've never had a problem with this. I've never downloaded anything more 200megs in a day.
    I went to my App history and found the only app I had downloaded that day, was Whatsapp... which I had deleted and reinstalled. (Could it be that?)
    My service provider can't give me specific details regarding what was downloaded that day... because they say it would be invading my privacy.
    My question is, how do I find out what I was doing that day? My Safari history doesn't go that far back on my phone. And it can't be that.
    It must be an app. It can't be location services or anything like that, because it happened in one day... 3.2 gigs in one day. And of that one day I was home for half of it.
    Please help me. There must be a way to track exactly what usage was used that day, and from where... 3.2 gigs is madness. It can't be right.
    I have an iPhone 4S.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

    Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
    I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
    Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
    Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
    While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
    After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
    Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
    Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
    Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
    In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.
