WARNING: Apple does not offer normal warranty for BB OpenBox

Question

I called Apple this week after receiving an iPad Air to register my warranty. Apple would ONLY warranty the item until the end of the first year it was placed in service (4 months from my BB purchase date - not the full year - and the 90 day telephone support coverage was expired so I couldn't receive software support anymore).
Contacted BB CS which offered no resolution.
Before I purchased the iPad I had a chat session with the order desk and I asked specifically (I kept full transcript):
ME: Great, one other item. I noticed you offer "Open-Box" version of this as well. Is there any difference in return, warranty, or anything else if I purchase the open-box vs the New?
BB: Let me check that for you.
It's the same.
So my warning to everyone buying BB OpenBox Apple products is that you could be receiving a very short Apple warranty without any way to know in advance.

Hello facmer-
I am sorry to hear about your disappointment with the open box iPad Air that you recently purchased as the warranty on it is not for the full amount of time that a new iPad Air would have.
In looking over your transcript, I can see how the agent may not have correctly interpreted what you were asking about, as the warranty would function the same as with a new product.  However, this is obviously not your fault either, so I understand your frustration.  It looks like your concerns have come to the attention of our executive support team and a member of that team should be reaching out to you soon.  Hopefully they can reach a resolution with you that will be satisfactory.
