Warning:  Backing up your iWeb 'Domain' file will not save you.

Here's the transcript from my chat with a MobilMe Support Rep. after losing (they simply disappeared) all of my blog's very valuable comments (hundreds), for nearly two years of blog entries.
I have many backed up 'domain' files, and each shows the comments that have been received and saved for all the entries when iWeb first starts up. But then, for some reason iWeb scrubs them (they just disappear) and when I "Publish All" to the web, the entries are published but not the comments attached.
Read MobilMe's response and consider yourselves warned. Backups won't save you. They simply won't. And yet . . . I was actually told I should have backed up. When I told my tech rep I had, then the reality of the situation came out. This is amazing to me.
Read on . . .
You are chatting with Omran A, a MobileMe Support Representative
Hi, my name is Omran A. Welcome to Apple!
Omran A: How are you?
Omran A: I see that you have lost your comments.
Omran A: Correct?
Perry: Yes. Phone just rang, so my responses will be a bit slow for a few
Omran A: I apologize for the inconvenience.
Omran A: Have you upgraded iWeb recently?
Perry: Yes, Omran, is there any way to retrieve them?
Omran A: I am sorry this has happened to you. Losing comments tend to happen when upgrading iweb:
Perry: I'm running the latest version, and have been since it came out. Had problems with people even leaving comments for a while, as did everyone who was using iWeb, but that had become an issue of the past for a few months as memory serves.
Omran A: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2094
Omran A: Please let me know if you can view the link
Perry: We are well past the info in this upgrade doc. Upgraded long ago
Perry: Yes, I've got it up
Omran A: I just wanted to show you that upgrading iWeb tends to delete comments
Perry: I am at step 6, contact MobilMe support.
Omran A: Can you please give me a link to your site?
Perry: http://web.me.com/davidperryphoto1/GardenBlog/APhotographers_Garden_Blog/A_Photographers_GardenBlog.html
Omran A: Can you please give me a link to your site?
Omran A: Thank you
Omran A: Please hold while I do some investigation
Omran A: Did your comments get deleted after updating to iWeb 2.0 or did happen month after that?
Perry: More than a month afterward. Just a week or so ago
Omran A: OK
Omran A: Thank you
Omran A: Please hold while I do some further investigation
Perry: Still there?
Omran A: Yes
Omran A: I am still performing a investigation.
Omran A: Please give me a few more minutes.
Perry: Thanks. I'll just keep on working here...
Omran A: Thank you for your patience
Omran A: I am terribly sorry. I search all over the servers and I am not able to recover your comments.
Omran A: I suggest backing up comments regularly.
Omran A: I suggest backing up comments regularly.
Perry: When I start up iWeb with my saved "domain" file, I see the comments, but then, within moments, the program scrubs them, because, apparently they are no longer out there on the web. Is there anyway to recapture them from the saved domain file?
Perry: How the heck do I back up my comments if they are stored in some obscure place on one of your servers and seperate from my website?
Omran A: So you see them and then they disappear
Perry: yes
Omran A: OK
Omran A: I believe the following link shows you how to backup to save comments
Omran A: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2094
Perry: Omran, look. I have a backed up copy of my domain, just as they direct. When I start up iWeb with this file, I see the saved comments. But when I publish all, as directed, I get the blog but I get no comments published. That's why you and I are talking. I've apparently got the comments still in some form in my saved domain, but the program, or .ME scrubs them. What the **** good does the backed up file do me if I can't get Mobil Me to recognize the comments and re-post them? This is my issue.
Omran A: OK
Omran A: I am sorry I did not fully understand you
Omran A: One moment please.
Omran A: I am sorry even though you are able to see the comments for a split second. You can not recover them from the domain file.
Omran A: Just for clarification
Perry: Can we agree that this is a gigantic "cluster #@$*" and that this wonderful new opportunity presented us in the form of MobilMe has been very painful and expensive for many of your loyal customers?
Omran A: You see the comments with the domain file you backed up in iweb but can not see them once you published them to the internet, correct?
Perry: correct.
Omran A: Do they disappear in iWeb ?
Perry: But the program or something tends to scrub them within a minute or so of the program starting up. They are there, in all the entries dating all the way back, and then they are not. They just disappear.
Omran A: I am sorry the domain is there but We can not recover the comments. I am sorry that you have had a bad experience with MobileMe. We have given our loyal customers a 90 day extension for your patience with us.
Perry: Do you or anyone there know of a resource that I can send the domain file to take it apart and retrieve the comments. Someone has to know how to burrow into the file and pull that stuff. Anybody there know of a resource?
Omran A: Let me check
Omran A: I just checked with my supervisor and he checked the servers and said there is no way to recover your comments.
Omran A: My sincere apologies. I understand loosing comments that span for two years is very sad.
Omran A: If there was a way I would let you know.
Omran A: I am sorry that you experience with MobileMe has not been that great, you may leave a feedback and let us know what issues has frustrated you
Omran A: MobileMe feedback
Omran A: Upper manager reads the feeback
Omran A: Feedback
Perry: Thanks to you personally Omran for your efforts. I'll be saving and perhaps publishing this dialogue between us on the blog as a warning to others, along with a few choice words and pictures illustrating my newly formed opinion of MobilMe. Watch for it.
Omran A: If you select the blue close button and you will receive a survey.
Omran A: Please note that the survey reflects only me.
Omran A: I am sorry that I was not able to help you.
Perry: NO worries. Thanks!
Omran A: If you create the blog can you change my name to something else
Omran A: It would be horrible to have people coming in and saying oh no it is you!
Perry: Why, you were awesome. It is iWeb and this new, rammed down our throats long before it should have been, MobilMe that is the problem, not you. You were a real peach.
Omran A: Thank you Perry
Omran A: Thank you for chatting and I hope MobileMe services improve to meet your needs
Omran A: And have a great day
Perry: You can be certain that I do too! Thanks again!

Yeah, if your Domain won't fit on a CD or you don't have space to save it, at LEAST set up Backup to annoy you at regular intervals. Once you've clicked cancel a few times due to wanting to get something else done, perhaps it will begin to wear on your psyche and guilt you into going ahead and doing it!

  • Open jpegs from Premier CS3 in PhotoshopCS3 says locked file will not save to jpeg

When I open a jpeg or tiff, from Premiere to photoshop, and make some modifications (like simply mode to grayscale) and try to save it back to the jpeg it refuses, saying the file is locked and I should go to Explorer, properties and unlock. However the files are not locked in the properties, so my only choice is to save as another file, re-load it itno Premiere, and put it on the timeline. I used to be able to edit directly from Premier to Photoshop, and save - on CS3!
I have no clue what I might have done to cause this, except it is a fresh install of Master Suite on a fresh install of Vista Ultimate.
    Any help appreciated.
    Jack

I also realize that my saying, "that is the way it works for me," doesn't help you, since it doesn't work for you. Did it EVER work for you? YES IT DID, THAT IS WHAT IS PUZZLING, AND IN CS3 ALSO.
    Couple of thoughts/questions:
Are you networked? YES, 2 WSIDE BY SIDE AND A THECUS RAID5 5 TERABYTE DATA BOS WHERE I KEEP MANY VIDEO AND STILLS. Are you logged in as an Administrator? I AM THE ONLY ADMINISTRATOR AND LOGGED IN AS SUCH. Are the Assets on internal (non-mapped) HDDs? IN FACT THE THECUS ACTS JUST LIKE ANOTHER INTERNAL HARD DRIVE, NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH IT BEFORE. I'M NOT MUCH OF A COMPUTER PERSON, SO NOT EVEN SURE WHAT MAPPED MEANS, BUT WHEN I WAS ABLE TO EDIT FROM PREMIERE BY SIMPLY CLICKING ON EDIT IN PHOTOSHOP, AND THE ASSETS WERE STORED ON THE THECUS, FIXES CAME BACK DIRECTLY TO PREMIERE. NOW THE SAY 'LOCKED' Any on external, or mapped-network HDDs? Are the Assets coming off of some media like CD, or DVD, and not first being transferred to internal HDDs? ALL ASSETS ARE ON INTERNAL DRIVES. I'VE TRANSFERRED SOME MEDIA TO THE SCRATCH DISC INTERNAL DRIVE AND GET THE SAME RESULT. If they originate FROM CD/DVD, are you making sure that they are not listed as Read Only, after copying? ALL I HAVE CHECKED HAVE NO CHECK ON READ ONLY. NONE ARE RECENTLY BROUGHT IN, I HAVE NEARLY 30,000 PHOTOS SEVERAL TERABYTES OF VIDEO. Windows likes to flag them that way, and it can bite you later. Anyone else on your network using these Assets? Are you using them in AE, AI, InDesign, etc., while also using them in Premiere/PS? I ONLY HAVE PREMIERE AND PHOTOSHOP OPEN, I EVEN CLOSED DOWN BRIDGE. Last, do you have Indexing turned on for any of your HDDs, as Windows loves to "lock" files, while it does its indexing. I turn this off for ALL HDDs, especially for my large externals. (Sometimes, when I move the external HDDs from workstation to workstation, XP will turn Indexing back on, and I have to disable this - happens about 10% of the time.) I HAVE RECENTLY INSTALLED COPERNIC TO DO SEARCHING, VISTA IS NOT FINDING THINGS WELL ENOUGH, IT MIGHT BE THE INDEXING, I'LL TRY THAT WHEN I GET BACK THIS AFTERNOON. THANKS FOR THE TIPS AND 20 QUESTIONS. THIS IS THE KIND OF HELP THAT THEY MEAN ABOUT RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS, THANKS
    AND PARDON THE CAPS
    JACK
"Locking" is usually tied into permissions. That's why I ask about the networking aspects.
Wish I had a quick fix for you.

  • Files will not save to trash

When ever I move any file to the trash, or choose delete from the file menu. Snow Leopard always warns me that this file will be deleted immediately and can not be recovered. How do I get the trash to function again?

    KenJKel wrote:
I know the trash is not a "storage device". but its engineering design is for quick recovery including app installs.
Glad you solved the problem. As for quick recovery, I've never come across that, especially WRT to app installs. However, if you're only emptying it once a week, then you're using it as a storage device, which I recommend against. Use bootable backups/clones or TM backups for recovery operations.

  • Adobe CS5 files will not save and crash on Yosemite

I have a brand new Macbook Pro 15" running the latest version of Yosemite. I have my Adobe CS5 Web Premium system installed and when using Illustrator, I can not save any files--when I go to save and choose where to save the document, the program freezes and the following crash report appears. This happens for any open document, I've tried many different ones. I have uninstalled and re-installed all Adobe programs, made sure they are all up to date versions, I've deleted all my preferences, changed time zones, and have attempted most all other fixes in the forums other than wiping the drive and starting over. Any help would be greatly appreciated--I'm a graphic designer and not being able to use Illustrator is affecting my job!

Did you ever get this fixed? I'm just now experiencing this very issue and have done all the things same as yourself to no avail.

  • .psb file will not save - "Saving 0%" hangs for a LONG time.

Using Adobe Photoshop CC 2014. Dual 6-core xeon system running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. 32GB RAM, SSD boot drive and SSD scratch drive, with my project files on an internal 3TB 7200RPM drive.
I have a fairly large .psb (16 bit, 12,000px wide, embedded linked smart objects, and some smaller smart objects that are 32 bit). It also contains some vector layers and many layer effects. It is fairly well optimized. The 32-bit layers are external linked files and vectors have been used to help mitigate file size.
Last night, immediately after a restart, I set it to save and it took a while, so I went in the house and ended up falling asleep on the couch. This morning, it was still at 0%. I was able to cancel the save without issue and further optimize the file (got it down to 4.5 GB), but it still won't save or save as.
I am able to cancel the save without issue. This happens no matter what drive I save to. All my drives are less than half full, this is a brand new machine that performs REALLY well in all other cases (Premiere/Maya).
What are my options here? I have about an hour and a half of work that I will lose of I don't get to save this thing. That's bad - I have a tight deadline.
EDIT: I just created a new canvas and manually dragged each layer/folder one at a time to the new document from the old. That one won't save either - it just sits at 0%. This tells me the issue is with the layers somewhere (or with Photoshop's inability to save them).
    Help!!

Great news! Nice that command removed the bottleneck.   What percent of your ram is allocated to Photoshop?
When you say CC, I assume CC 2014, the latest update is
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 2014.2.2 20141204.r.310 2014/12/04:23:59:59 CL 994532  x64
10.10.2 is not without its' heartbreaks. We have fielded a lot of complaints over it and interaction with Adobe software. (mostly CS5).

  • Photoshop file will not save as jpg

I took a series of portraits from a session last week. We downloaded the images as jpgs and edited them in Photoshop. Then we converted the photoshop files into jpgs. All but two converted. Those two images had nothing different done with them. Same processes all the way through.  It is saying, "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
Why would two select PS files not convert to jpg?
We have had done this same process with hundreds of sessions, but this is now happening. Two images from the last session did the same thing as well. Other than that, we've never had this issue.

"Program Error" means something unexpected happened.
It could be a problem with the OS, the disk drive, or something really bizarre in the image metadata.

  • IMovie troubles - file will not save properly

I am a novice to iMovie, and I spent hours learning it and creating a slide show with music. It wouldn't let me make the last change and save it - adding a title. In fact, it would not even let me save it to the hard drive, saying there was not enough room. It forced me to revert to the last save (without the title). I was OK with that, but my saved version has been changed - the music and transitions were all taken out. I went through this twice - each time the changes were lost. It completely ignores the "save" or "save as" command.
I know I have over 100 GB of free space. I've had this iMac only one month. The fact that the little slide show is 1 GB surprised me - I used about 20 photos which I scanned in today, and one 3 minute song. I wanted to share it on iDisk, but since I can't, I thought I'd burn it to dvd.
However, when I played it again, I realized the music and the transitions were gone - they apparently had been put in the trash (with a notification that "stray" pieces were in the trash and would I like to see them). I did not empty the trash, but if my changes are ignored every time I add the music and transitions again, what am I to do?
Why does the "saved file" change by itself?

    Welcome to the forum!
What you describe -- the failure to save the project -- can occur if the disk the project resides on isn't correctly formatted. The problem usually occurs on an external Firewire drive the user buys and starts using without reformatting.
The drive must use the Mac OS Extended disk format. To check the disk format, click on the disk in the Finder and choose File > Get Info. The disk format is shown in the window that opens.
If the drive needs to be reformatted, use Disk Utility to erase it. Note that erases files on the drive so first move them to some other drive.
About the size: the size of the iMovie project won't necessarily match the size of the movie you are making. There may be lots of stuff in the project that isn't included in the Timeline. Generally, one hour of video = 12 GB of data. (That's uncompressed.) So if your project is 5 minutes long, that's about 1 GB.
Note that before sharing it on your iDisk, you can export the project to a compressed movie. (The Full Quality export is huge, and not good for sharing.)
Here's a note that suggests the H.264 codec for exporting a movie like yours. It might help you get started. To play the movie, those who download it must have QuickTime 7. Some may not. It can be downloaded from from Apple.

Wait a second. You posted in the iMovie 4 forum but you said you've had your iMac just one month. It should have shipped with iMovie HD (iMovie 5). Please say which version you have. It probably doesn't make any difference for this problem, but the two applications are quite different.

  • TS5376 download file will not save for installation

As above I have been through the whole process as detailed. I did have issues uninstalling the mobile portion but got there in the end. I wnt into files and deleted anything left.
Now when I ask to download file it ask to save and even though I hit save it does nothing????
ive now removed after getting the errors and now cant re install
    feeling frustrated....

Try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • IWeb "Domain" File Not Opening in Mavericks

I just bought a new Mac Pro and converted everything over from my early 2008 Mac Pro.  However, my iWeb Domain file will not open in the new Mac.  It defaults to the start up iWeb page asking me to choose a new template.
    Facts:
1- Both systems are running same version of Mavericks.
2- Both systems are running same version of iWeb.
3- In the Early Mac system, when I open iWeb, the Domain automatically opens.  In new Mac it opens to the "choose a template for your webpage" option.  Same result if I double click on the actual Domain file.
    Troubleshooting already done:
1- Confirmed this is the only Domain file on the system
2- Opened same file on old system to ensure it is a valid Domain file
3- Re saved in old system and transferred over to new system.  Same result when opening.
Thank you in advance for any insights on this.

To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible in Lion or Mt. Lion enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Optionsmenu to bring the this window:

So i copied the domain file to an external to back it up and because I was going to restore my machine.
I restored my maching restored the domain file and iWeb wont open. I am really bummed because I have 4 website on it as well as my Photo website.
    Any ideas would be lifesaving!

    Q. What happens when you launch iWeb?
When you first launch a clean install of iWeb and then quit, some files are created, these include your preference file, which is located here:
    User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWeb.plist
Also your domain file and the iWeb folder are created here:
    User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain
Providing you used the default location (above) for your domain file previously, then you can now delete the new domain file and replace it with your old file. When you launch iWeb it should open your old domain file.
    Q. Did you change the name you use for your user account with the new system?
If so, the plist file within your domain file could be pointing to the wrong place. Lets delete it!
With the domain file in the iWeb folder, "Control+Click" (or right click) on the domain file. From the pop-up menu choose, Show Package contents. Look for a file called assets.YourUserName.plist, move this file to the desktop, out of the domian file. Now launch iWeb, does your site open?
    Report back!

  • HELP! can't find my iweb domain file anymore

tried to back up my iweb domain file. located a file called 'domain' (in the library--> application support--> iweb folder) and opened it to check the contents (it seemed too light). it was the wrong file, an empty one not the domain i have been using.
when i migrated to this machine, i must have renamed my good old domain file, put it somewhere and set iweb to run with it.
the problem is now that i accidently opened the wrong domain file, iweb is set to run with this empty domain file. i.e. all my pages and sites appear gone.
i have no idea where my real domain file is.
"spotlight" or "file-->find" are no help whatsoever in locating it (heck, they could not even locate the other 'domain' file... does spotlight not search in the library area of the HD?? seems really lame). it must be somewhere. it was just here a second ago. it's not in the trash either (which i have not emptied for a while).
    any help?

hm, i tried Cmd-Shift-C and typing "sites2" in the search field.
searching 'this mac' and 'file name' or 'contents' turns up nothing.
i tried typing 'domain' in the search field also.
also tried to search by 'kind' typing in 'iweb domain'. turns up nothing.
not even the domain file which i know is there (the wrong one, in the library --> iweb folder) and is called 'domain.' and which get info tells me is of the kind 'iweb domain'. ireonically, only its alias comes up (which is not in hte library folder).
as for spotlight, it only searches 14 categories of files, and you cannot add any .
is it just me or is something wrong here? if you search for a file that is clearly there, but search does not turn it up, wouldnt it follow that the search function is no good?
i also tried searching as 'contents' a phrase which i know is in on one of the pages in the domain. but no luck either.
i have not deleted the domain file. i am positive about that. i just opened a different/wrong domain file. that in itself should not delete, damage or hide my domain. its just misplaced. the frustrating thing is of course that the sites are still all there published online! but i cannot change or update them without the domain file... (of course i have a backup from a few weeks ago, but would be nice not to have to start from that again...)
any more suggestions on more effective searches? e.g. i know that the 'kind' is called 'iweb domain'. any search program that could do anything with that?
thanks for the cmd-shift-c hint btw. will come in handy in other ways im sure.

  • Photoshop CS6 - Batch function will not save files

OK, I have used the "Automate/Batch" function well over a hundred times, so this situation (first time using it in CS6) is VERY frustrating!
    Running Adobe CS6 extended v. 13.0.1 x32 on a Win XP sp3 OS.
I have a slew of photos that need nothing done except to resize from the native file size to 6 in x 4 in @ 150 ppi and save into a new folder (to not override the original).  I have recorded the action multiple times now and each time I run the action, the files do not save! Here are the various parameters I've used:
    Attempt #1:
         Action Steps Recorded -
    Open
Save for web (set size parameters here)
    Close
          Batch settings -
Play Set: correct folder selected; Action: correct action selected
Source: folder - selected folder where native files are located (on desktop)
NO checkmarks next to any options
Destination: folder - selected folder where small files should be saved (on desktop)
    NO checkmark on override action
Did not change file naming parameters
Result #1 - DID NOT SAVE FILES
    Attempt #2:
         Action Steps Recorded -
    Open
Save for web (set size parameters here)
    Close
         Batch settings -
Play Set: correct folder selected; Action: correct action selected
Source: folder - selected folder where native files are located (on desktop)
    Cehckmark override Action "Open" commands
Destination: folder - selected folder where small files should be saved (on desktop)
    NO checkmark on override action
Did not change file naming parameters
Result #2 - DID NOT SAVE FILES

Checkmark override action "Save As" commands
Did not change file naming parameters
Result #3- DID NOT SAVE FILES
    Attempt #4:

Please help!  This has never been a problem before CS6 and I truly am at my wits end trying to figure out why the files will not save.  I have several hundred files that I need to run this on, so doing it individually is not an option.
Thanks in advance for any and all insights!

I'm having a problem with Automating > Batch as well. Strange enough, I did a batch of other photos and it worked fine. Selecting a new set of folders is not working at all; the files simply pop open and then close but the destination folder remains empty. It also doesn't appear the actions are occuring since I don't see them highlighting as the automation runs. I have no idea why it would work then not. BTW, "Override Action "Save As" is unchecked.

UPDATE: I put a "save as" command at the beginning of the action, then checked the "Override Action "Save As" box and it somehow works now, but not before stalling on an image (normally the last in the folder) and complaining that the image was being used in another program. The only other program opened was Bridge so I'm unsure why it had a problem. I closed both programs and ran the automation with nothing else opened and it worked ... ?? Confused, but not complaining (for now).

  • Import from camera will not save

When I try to import a movie from a hand held camera (Sony Handycam HDR-HC9) with a FireWire cable iMovie will not import the video. It was working fine one minute then stopped. I have tried different recorded tapes and still nothing.
The video will nnot play back on the Mac screen and will not save the movie even though it says it is importing. I tried using my personal Mac and it worked fine on there. I know it is a problem with iMovie on my work Mac.m

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
Your h264 video files may not be in a format which imovie uses. Videos imported this way need to be in a format the camera supports. If however imovie recognises a camera or a camera archive it will carry out the appropriate conversion for you. You may need to copy the file/folder system from the camera rather than just the files.

  • HT201250 Will using AirPort Utility to "restore to original settings" make you have to re-back up your computer's files on a Time Capsule?

Will using AirPort Utility to "restore to original settings" make you have to re-back up your computer's files on a Time Capsule?

The advantage is CCC has built in routines that "bless" (see the Terminal.app command "bless") the
os x installation so it will boot properly on the new volume it is being installed on.
Disk Utility simply copies (restores) files from one volume to another. Many times this works just fine.
Sometimes it won't boot afterwards. Most of the time (as long as there are no system files missing
or corrupted) a person may "bless" the drive and restore it to working condition.
CCC is not a "magical" application, it is in fact a front end to applications that already exist separately
in OS X (asr, hdiutil, diskutil, bless, etc.).
It doesn't matter to me how you do it. It's your time not mine. Everyone should spend some time
behind the command line in terminal. I do many tasks using the command line, including and not
limited to complete system restores, backing up data, disk partitioning, installing software, disk
repair, permissions repair, ACL management, restoring data, managing disk images, network
management, user management, file management, etc. Many people are fearful of the command
line. I feel just the opposite, I'm fearful without it.

  • Can somebody help me to restore my iWeb domain file from Time Machine (at the moment my whole life history is frozen online)?

I had to wipe my machine and create a new account. Now I can't restore my iWeb domain file and thus can't edit my site. When I do try to restore the file I'm told:
The operation can’t be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure “Locked” is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again.
I've changed the permissions of the domain file/folder itself (within Time Machine) but I gather it wants me to change the permission of everything in there, which would presumably take hours and hours.
I've tried just dragging the domain file from the hard drive where the Time Machine backup is stored but the result of that is:
    Can’t open file “~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2.”
This is quite urgent because I am applying for a new job and can't display my latest work online. Any help much appreciated in advance.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
