WARNING: Cannot "Read or Write" files on iPod

My iPod has been behaving very curiosly as of late. For the past month a wanring has flashed up on my iTunes screen when attempting to sync music files. The warning says *"Cannot read the disk 'iPod'. Unable to read or write files"*. Despite this warning my iPod has been able to update daily podcasts without issue. However, when I recently purchased new music I could not get it to sync to my iPod. I have no problem listening to this new album in my iTunes library, but it just will not sync to my iPod. I created a playlist for it and attempted to add it, but I discovered that the iPod was not syncing the playlists either!
In a recent attempt to remedy the problem I selected only to sync the playlist that had the new album. What happened was frightening. All my music was no longer on the iPod, with the exception of my podcasts! I tried altering the settings to return all the music, but now I am unable to add any of my music from the library.
I am wondering if anyone has experienced this difficulty before, and if so, if they have any trouble shooting techniques. I have already been ti Apple's support page and completed the 5 recommended steps, to no avail. Any suggestions or thoughts as to what might be occuring.

Luckily, backing up your itunes library is easy. Just duplicate the folder(s) with your music in it. (Most likely, it's user/Music/ITunes.) Once the copy is made, you might want to move it to a different part of your hard drive.
Now, restoring your ipod WILL wipe the device. If there's anything on your ipod that isn't in your itunes library (unlikely but possible), you want to make sure you've got a copy of it somewhere before restoring.
Before restoring, check to see if there is an update to the ipod's firmware that needs to be installed. This is a "longshot" but might help. Just click the "check for update" button on the ipod's "Summary" pane in itunes. (Current version is 1.2.3, I think).

  • Error! Cannot read or write to my ipod

    Whenever I plug my ipod into my powerbook, I get the error, "The ipod cannot be updated. The disk could not be read or written to." It was working fine, and then all of a sudden this happened.
    I've restored the ipod and reinstalled itunes, but I still have the same problem. The ipod is working fine, and I can still add music to it, but I have to do it manually and it locks up repeatedly. I have had problems syncing iphoto with it as well.
    Please help! I've talked to a few friends that said it is a sign that my hard drive is failing. Any thoughts?

    The solution is or at least it was for me is as simple as the "speed" of your USB conection. On my old PC i would connect my ipod via a USB on the front casing , no problems, when i changed my PC i used the front USB again and got the cannot read or write to ipod error. I just connected the ipod to one of the USBs at the rear and as i understand it they need to be USB2 type , have a go try all the USBs you have especially the ones at the back of your PC , hope this helps it did for me

  • Ipod "cannot read or write to___'s Ipod"

    Hey, I'm getting a very frustrating error... and was wondering what on earth it means... and why I can't use any more than 2.89 Gigs of my 60 gig ipod...
    after trying to place more on it... pretty much of anything... it says that it can't read or write to <my ipod's name> and then there's an elipses
    like.. I'm trying to get a digital life videocast onto it and obviously it isn't working.
    very frustrating
    and I'v also got a problem of it quite often saying that all my songs are movies... and then making my movies not work
    after a couple of minutes of screwing around on the computer I can make it work again... so I must be doing something right
    I'm not in a huge rush... considering I got my Ipod for free...
    need any more info, obviously you'll ask
    thanks in advance

    I am still having trouble updating my ipod click wheel 40gb and my nano ipod also my brothers nano ipod which he connected to my 17"powerbook! only to have the same problems.
    When updating the ipods they all manage to update a few songs then they seem to stop updating on any song then I get this meassage.
    The error message reads (Attempting to copy to the disk "my ipod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to) so after that I looked at the last song that was updated to my ipod,then I looked at the song that was straight after the one the got stuck, I then deleted the song after the last updated song from my itunes library and updated again, my ipod then proceeded to update some more songs, then it stopped again and I got the error message again, if I repeat this process of finding and deleting these songs it sort of works but this is all so wrong!!!! So after getting this message with three different ipods surely this problem lies with the computer NOT the ipods!
    Can anyone please please help.

  • [warn] mod_bonjour: Cannot read template index file '/System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Sites/index.html'.

    Operating System: Lion 10.7.5
    I was getting this warn in the logs
    [warn] mod_bonjour: Cannot read template index file '/System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Sites/index.html'.
    and looking to the System directory on;
    System/Library/User Template
    User Template was locked and onwned by the System.
    I went to the terminal and type;
    sudo mkdir "/System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Sites/"
    sudo touch "/System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Sites/index.html"
    re-started Apache
    The warn went away gracefully

    I am adding here that this seems to be a permissions bug since the "User Template" is owned by the system and no one else have access to it. The warn went away temporarily because the permissions still wrong in that directory. I changed the permissions on the User Template directory to read and see what is inside and it loops to the user system structure. Most of the directories in the system structure are locked leaving only the public and sites directory with the correct permissions. Inside of the sites folder have a blank index.html file with read access.
    So I am not sure if what I did until now will resolve the warn issue.
    What I did was to get info on the User Template directory, authenticate as root and change the permission to the admin to read only. That is harmles since not even the admin can change its content. The warn seems to have gone away for now. However, the point here is to find out if the permissions should be read and write for the admin instead of read only or some other conf. More latter!

  • Ipod will sync up once then says cannot read or write to disk.

    Is this normal? The IPOD shows up in Itunes after the first sync but when I go and try to update the ipod again it says it cannot read or write to disk. Tech support says this is normal but it does not make any sense as the IPOD still shows up in Itunes.

    the IPOd will sync up when I fiorst plug it in. the problem is when it is finished, Itunes says ipod update complete you can disconnect. I leave it connected, and if I try to update the ipod again after I download something or whatever into Itunes it comes back with the cannot read from or write to disk. I can unplug it and plug it back in and it work sfine. There is something with the software I guess that is not staying connected with the hardware after the first sync.

  • Ipod Shuffle connected but error (Cannot read or write on device)

    Hello,
    My Ipod Shuffle 2 is connected to my Itunes on, I can create the name and everything seems fine. When I try to transfer songs, Itunes is showing that it is synchronizing and then I get an error message saying it cannot read or write from the device. What's wrong? I try reset the ipod, re-install the Itunes but I still get the same error.
    What's happening.
    Please HELP.

  • "iTunes cannot read the contents of the ipod", How can I fix this?

    Hello everyone, I am having trouble with my iPod touch 32GB and getting iTunes to detect it. I'm using Windows 7.
    When plugging it in tonight, I got the message "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod (Name). Go to the summary tab in the iPod preferences and click restore to restore this iPod to factory settings". I attemped to do this, but I then got an iTunes error "3184" and was unable to install the iPod software.
    I've tried...
    - Using a different computer
    - Using a different USB cable
    - Rebooting the iPod
    Nothing seems to work. I've read a solution as to delete one of the iTunes files on the iPod, but the iPod doesn't show up in my Windows Explorer, so I am unable to do this. The computer does however charge the battery when I have the iPod plugged in. I'm also able to still listen to music on the iPod as well.
    One other note, I had the same thing happen to my previous iPod touch. I got my original iPod touch back in December 2010. In October 2011, the iPod just died one day and I was not able to turn it on at all or charge it. When I'd plug it into the computer, I got the exact same errors and was unable to restore the iPod. I sent it in to Apple as it was still under warrenty and they sent me a replacement. Now 3 months later it's happened again. Of course the warrenty starts from the day you purchase the original, so this is no longer under warrenty despite having it for only 3 months. The only difference this time is that the battery still charges and I can still turn it on and listen to music.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    hi Angie!
    hmmm. is there an Apple Store convenient where you can take the ipod for a check-up?
    love, b

  • ITunes Reports "iTunes Cannot read the contents of the iPod...."

    This morning I connected my 2 week old iPod Classic to my laptop via the USB cable and iTunes came up and displayed a message saying "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod MHAM'S IPOD". It suggested a restore, which I have not tried yet. I have faithfully used the "Eject" function in iTunes to disconnect. After reading some other posts in the forums, it appears that others are having a similar issue. I'm concerned that this is normal operating behavior for this product. Given that this is my first Apple brand purchase, I'm a little turned off to the brand. Does anyone have a suggestion that doesn't involve me wiping this thing clean and starting over? And is this something that I should just expect? I ran a diagnostic and the results are below.

    The iPod updater logging file cannot be found.

    I had this same exact issue happen to me this morning, and I lost 40 gigs worth of transferring in restoring it. I put a few albums on for the day, and when I tried connecting again this evening, the same thing happened. It hit me when it happened the second time that both times I had the iPod locked when it connected it to the computer. I'm pretty sure I've never accidentally connected it while locked before. My guess it that it is unable to read the content since the iPod is locked, and somehow this causes some sort of corruption that prevents it from seeing the files until a restoration is done. I would think Apple should be able to release an update which would detect if the iPod was locked and tell you to unlock it rather than to go through this process of losing all your music from the iPod. It scares me to think this could happen again simply if I am absent-minded in the future and forget to check whether it is locked or not before I connect it.

  • ITunes cannot read the contents of the iPod " my iPod's name ".

    I'm having problems with syncing the 5th gen nano to iTunes 9 on my early 2008 MBP. I had one since September when they came out. It was fine for a while, but then I would get the error message: iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "<my iPod's name>". It got to where it was happening every other night or every night when I would try to sync. Of course it goes without saying that this makes the video camera unusable, since one can't count on retrieving the videos.
    I talked with Apple Support on the phone. They were very good. Led me through a rescue-restore. This was described as more thorough than a normal restore. It involves a non-trivial button sequence. Also per suggestions I quit using a non-powered hub. I had been hooking both my iPod touch2 and my nano5 up to the hub to sync (not enough USB ports).
    We tried the rescue-restore and things looked OK, but then a couple days later on the evening sync, the message came back. I should also mention that I use the pedometer feature in always-on mode, so of course that data gets lost as well.
    I then went to the local apple store genius bar, and they saw the same error message I got when they plugged it in, so they decided to give me a new nano5.
    I figured this was really it, but last night, on the second evening sync since the initial setup, the same error message is back with the new nano5. Feel bad because it now seems likely there was nothing wrong with my first nano5 (unless both are bad the same way - seems unlikely), but at the same time, I can't use any nano5 like things are now.
    So now it's time for some detective work. I have both a nano5 and a touch2, and I use pedometer in always-on mode on the nano5. I wonder if those might be clues. Last night when the error occurred, iirc I had previously sync'ed the nano5 ok and ejected. Then I had sync'ed my touch2. I unplugged the touch2 and went to sync the nano5 again to update for some playlist changes, and that's when the error occurred. I wonder if iTunes is somehow getting messed up and thinking it is still dealing with a touch2, and it trounces the nano5?
    It's probably a long shot, but I think I read someone else here with the same error message, and had a touch.
    Any ideas, would love to hear. I'm planning to try only syncing the nano5 on a fresh start of iTunes for a while, and see if that prevents the problem.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    OK. How do I uninstall iTunes to reinstall it? Is there an uninstaller? Do I have to chase down plist files or other hidden system things I don't know about? Kind of a dumb question maybe, I've been on a mac at home for like five years now, but uninstalling apps is not something I need to do (that's a good thing).
    So, yes, the problem happened again, with the new nano, on the second or third nightly sync (not sure how many days have gone by) since the plane to sync the nano first before the touch. Been using the right usb port also, in case that matters. Used to always use the left. The left port has a non-powered hub that has my time machine disk and a super-duper disk on it, along with an iLoc key. Tonight the two usb disks were not plugged in due to being in the process of be traded out for my other pair (I keep a pair offsite as well - backup-paranoid - but that's another topic).
    Do you think it could matter what's plugged into the opposite USB port? Not the nano and the touch only go into the right port straight away - no hub.
    Kind of a bummer, this. I hope we can figure it out. Thanks for helping...
    BTW, I alway keep all my software up to date.

  • Cannot Read Entire TXT Files in "Notes" folder

    Ihave a 4G iPod nano (red, if relevant... I think it's a 4g?) I cannot read entire text files in the notes folder. I can read part of the file, usually up to about a 2 KB size in standard Unicode format, but I am unable to view the entire text file. For example, I have a copy of Beowulf on my iPod that is about 267KB in size; however, I can only read through 1.87KB of it. The rest shows up in Windows Explorer and is fully functional there, but I Cannot view it from my iPod.
    Anyone else have this problem, and know what I can do to fix this (besides breaking it up into about 50 chapters?)
    Thanks Much!

    The max size for any note that can be read in the notes on ipod is 4kb. That said there is no alternative way of getting around this size. here is a good article about working with ipod notes.

    unless you really want to VOID your warranty and also fry your nano to become a expensive PAPERWEIGHT!!
    many have stupidly done this and have come here cursing as to why their ipod nano is fried adn not working at all! Just be smart and make note that that hack software doenst even work for the 2g ipod nano!

  • When connecting my 120GB iPod Classic I receive the prompt; iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Name". It asks me to reset it. All my music appears to have been erased  iPod yet 41GB of data is on it. Help!

    When connecting my 120GB iPod Classic I receive the prompt; iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Name". It asks me to reset it. If I do this I will lose the contents of the iPod. The iPod shows no music on it yet 41GB of data is on it under "About" on the iPOD itself. It would appear that the music files are still there. I don't want to reset the iPod as it will mean reloading a significant amount of music i.e. my entire CD collection. Any suggestions? Has my iPod died?

    (I'll lose all my music right?)
    That is correct. A restore wipes all content from the device, resets all settings back to their defaults, and loads a fresh copy of the iPod's software onto the device.
    See this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.
    Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
    After all the music is safely in iTunes again, go ahead and restore the iPod to factory settings as it says.

  • UPDATE : Toshiba Recovery Wizard 'cannot read from source file or disk' error (satellite L500)

    UPDATE 2: Phoned Toshiba tech support again, guided by techie to begin the recovery again. Just before phoning I was able to go into recovery options and view the drive setup and all the files that couldn't be read are on the CD so I've no idea why the error kept occuring, and neither did the techie. Fingers crossed it works this time but I'm not overly hopefully given that we've just done exactly the same as I did before.  UPDATE 1: I got into the BIOS and reset everything back to defaults and yay, my toshiba recovery wizard now starts! :-D  On the down side, when trying to do a factory default software / out of the box recovery I continually get error messages with regards to copying the files, for example
    cannot read from source file or disk
    7z.dll
    Type application extension
    size 585kb
    date modified 7/14/2009 10.26pm
    other read / copy errors include PREINST6.SWM, BOOT_32, BOOTPRIORITY, CHECKMAXPTSIZE, CHGBOOT, CPU, CPUCHECK, CREATEPARTITION, CTRLDRVINFO, DISKWIPE, DMI, DPINST32, EBLIB.DLL, ERRORDIALOG, EW3BOOTSEQ, FWLINK, FWLINK.SYS, GETHDDINFO, GETKEYSTATE, IMAGEX, INFILED, INITRECAREA, KRAIADAPI.DLL ..... at which point I decided to 'skip all' :-/
    Any explanations as to what's going on and how I might be able to fix it would be very much appreciated! :-)  Thank you!
    I have a two and half year old satellite L500 with an Intel i-3 and 4 gigs of RAM, on which I was running Windows 7.
    Admittedly it’s had rather a hard life (I ran some very demanding CAD / graphics software on it) but it had always performed well until just recently, when after suffering several BSOD (which had never happened before), the hard drive failed.
    I partitioned and formatted a brand new hard drive (which is perfectly fine and functions normally when hooked up to another laptop with a SATA to USB cable) and obtained system recovery discs from Toshiba.  Unfortunately, when I try and run the first disc, windows starts to load files but then generates an error screen with the message Error F3-F100-0003 and a request to turn the computer off.
    When I use the windows Memory Diagnostic to get into the Windows Boot Manager Screen I get the following;
    Windows failed to start.  A recent hardware / software change might be the case.
    To fix the problem
    Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
    Choose your language settings and click ‘next’
    Click ‘repair your computer’
    File: \boot\memtest.exe
    Status: 0xc000000f
    Info: the selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
    I can also use F8 on startup to get into the advanced boot options but selecting any of them simply results in the F3-F100-0003 error message.  I’ve run a memory test using the UBCD, which tells me the memory is fine, and tried another hard drive (which also works perfectly well in another laptop) but no joy.  On phoning Toshiba support the techie said my hard drive had failed, but as I say, both hard drives are perfectly fine / usable when hooked up to another laptop.  I’m now completely stuck as to what the problem is and how I might resolve it – any advice / suggestions would be most gratefully received! Thank you in advance :-)

    the second disc gives me the the "cannot read from source file or disk PREINST8.SWM"
    My best guess is that the disc is not readable. Try copying it to another. Sometimes that works.
    Otherwise, order new discs from Toshiba.

  • Fstream can't read or write files 4GB even with -m64?

    Using C++-style streams, I have been unable to read or write files >4GB. For example, when writing 5GB in one go, I get only 1GB. The header for write uses the type streamsize for the size parameter, and according to sizeof, streamsize is 8 bytes (when using -m64). Looking at the assembly for a simple testcase, I verified that size parameter was not truncated before calling the write function.
    What makes this interesting is that I can read or write large files if I do it in the C-style (fopen, fwrite, fclose) or if I use the C++ functions and manually do it in 1GB blocks. I tried the instructions for LFS, but they didn't work and it seems like it shouldn't since this is C++ and I am building a 64-bit app. I have observed this with solaris studio 12.3 and 12.4.
    Is this a bug or am I missing a compiler flag?
    A simple testcase to expose this:
    #include <iostream>
    #include <fstream>
    #include <stdio.h>
    using namespace std;
    int main() {
      streamsize goal_size = ((int64_t) 1<<32) + ((int64_t) 1<<30);
      cout << goal_size << endl;
      char* data = new char[goal_size];
      fill(data,data+goal_size,'c');
      FILE* f = fopen("classic.data","w");
      fwrite(data,1,goal_size,f);
      fclose(f);
      fstream file("stream.data", std::ios::out | std::ios::binary);
      file.write(data,goal_size);
      file.close();

    Eh... sorry, didnt read the source close enough
    I can reproduce your misbehavior when compiling "by default" (with default -library=Cstd).
    It fails somewhat differently with Apache STL (-library=stdcxx4), which is kinda the modern version of Cstd.
    It works fine when compiling with -library=stlport4, or -library=stdcpp (-std=c++11).
    Looks like it is a deficiency of those particular STLs.
    regards,
      Fedor.

  • Error message: "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod."

    I wanted to get my dad a new iPod for Xmas and transfer all his music from his ancient Classic. But when I connect to my MacBookPro, I get the error message: "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod." I see that 90% of the ipod drive is used, but I don't see any songs listed either on the iPod screen or in iTunes, which is worrying. Is there anything I can to save the music? He will be so upset that it's all gone...

    My suggestions, when Restoring the iPod.
    Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
    Connect your iPod to the PC, using a high speed USB 2.0 port at the back of your PC.
    Disconnect all other USB devices, except the mouse and keyboard.
    Stop all other programs except iTunes.
    Good Luck!

  • Recovery Disk Error : cannot read from source file or disk HOW TO FIX ISSUE

    I have had my satellite L655-S5096 for some time now.. I had to switch out hard-drives the other day and installed windows 7 home on it from my own disk.  I tried to download all the drivers needed, but the graphics and wifi drivers never worked, so I pulled out the old toshiba disks to start from new with this harddrive.. It gets to asking me for the second disc, then the second disc gives me the the "cannot read from source file or disk PREINST8.SWM"  This is from the "out of the box" setting, which is recommended.  I do not know how to fix this issue besides reinstalling windows 7 from my disc and trying to get the drivers to work again.. however I shouldn't have to since I have the Toshiba recovery disks.. do I need new disks?
    Yes, I also had the hard drive drivers and all of that installed.. my toshiba reads the HDD just fine.
