WARNING:  Canon Pro Printers and CS4 – Serious Colour Management Issue

Over the last four days (and over fifty prints) I have undertaken extensive and meticulous tests to identify the cause of a problem; namely that targets for profiling a new printer (a Canon Pro9000), printed with ‘no colour management’, were printing far too dark and with what appeared to be a colour cast.
I have conclusively eliminated the printer, the printer drivers, the Mac OS, corrupted preference files, corrupted user accounts, incorrect Photoshop settings, incorrect printer driver settings, the ‘sticky settings' issue, and user error as possible causes of the problem.
I can say with 95% certainty that my tests, conducted using Mac OSX 10.4.11, have proved the following:
That, printing to a Canon Pro9000 or iP4500, Photoshop CS4 does not print accurate targets suitable for producing profiles.  This applies to both the No Colour Management (NCM) and the Printer Manages Colour (PMC) settings.
Photoshop CS and CS2 are not effected.
I did not test CS3.
Furthermore, colour managed prints (using the same accurate profile made in CS2), printed in CS2 and CS4, show subtle differences.  This may not be an issue except in the most critical applications.
It is likely that the problem will not be confined to the two Canon printers above since many other Canon printers share the same driver architecture.
Reading posts and discussions on other websites would seem to indicate that this problem is also manifest with some Epson printers and may also effect Mac OSX 10.5.
I have to conclude, therefore, that Photoshop CS4 cannot be replied upon to print targets of sufficient accuracy to produce reliable profiles for a colour managed workflow.
The fact that this is only just being reported can be attributed to four factors:
That many CS4 users are continuing to use profiles made under older versions of Photoshop and have yet to make new profiles using CS4.
Some users may not immediately notice a problem, or may ascribe it to other causes.
Some users may take the line of least resistance and use a previous version of Photoshop to work around the problem.
Some users are still using the older versions of Photoshop not effected.
Eric Chan (of Adobe) has stated on another website that CS4 implemented some new APIs for printing and that this has given rise to some "minor glitches".  If Eric Chan is correct, and Adobe changed the APIs in Photoshop CS4, this begs question of whether Adobe sufficiently tested CS4 before release ?  If Adobe did not test their software, and therefore failed to identify this critical problem, this would suggest negligence on Adobe’s part.  If Adobe identified the problem but then did not inform users that a potentially serious colour management issue existed this would suggest wilful or gross negligence.
It is not good enough to say that Adobe simply followed the ‘conventional’ path and ‘followed the rules’ regarding API implementation.  The experience of end users does not correspond to a “minor glitch” and, in my case, has been extremely costly in terms of time (over five days in all), lost revenues, and materials.  Furthermore, why should Adobe's customers be forced to use their valuable time diagnosing problems clearly of Adobe's creation – and actually admitted.
In UK law providers of goods and services (and this includes software) have to supply them as “fit for purpose”.  Clearly, in terms of colour management, CS4 is not fit for purpose.  Neither can Adobe hide behind its labyrinthine licensing terms since any exclusions would be ruled unlawful under the UK’s ‘Unfair Contract Terms’ Act.
My strong and unequivocal recommendation is that representatives from Adobe, Apple, and the printer manufacturers meet together – with the utmost urgency – and provide a rapid and complete solution.  It is simply not good enough to pass this ‘over the wall’ saying “it’s not our problem”.  It is.  Adobe's, Apple's, and the printer manufacturers'.  Please solve it.  And quickly.
Identify the problem clearly, make it and the solution/s public; and publicise it widely and thoroughly.

Dear DYP.
Thank you for your concern.
"What fixes have you tried?"
If I may quote from my post above:
"I have conclusively eliminated the printer, the printer drivers, the Mac OS, corrupted preference files, corrupted user accounts, incorrect Photoshop settings, incorrect printer driver settings, the ‘sticky settings' issue, and user error as possible causes of the problem.
I can say with 95% certainty that my tests, conducted using Mac OSX 10.4.11, have proved the following:

Photoshop CS and CS2 are not effected.
I did not test CS3"
These tests took place over three weeks and involved over five days of work and the replacement of the printer on Canon's recommendation (although the printer is clearly not at fault).
Please note that I am using Mac OSX 10.4.11.
"What driver versions are you using?"
Pixma iP4500 6.9.3 (also 6.9.1, 6.9.2 and the driver supplied on the CD).
Pro 9000 4.8.7 (also 4.7.3, 4.8.4 and the driver supplied on the CD).
"Yes it is frustrating but in a lot of cases it is fixable as I and others have clear reported, on this and the LR forums."
I have not found any fix on any website referring to Canon printers, despite exhaustive searches (this includes Canon's European and US websites which are mute on the issue).
The ReadMe file supplied with the installation disc of CS4 refers to problems with "some Canon printers" when printing with the 'Printer Manages Color' but does not identify using 'No Color Management' nor Epson printers as having issues.
I hope this post answers your questions.
Clearly all users of CS4 need to be warned of this problem which is likely to effect other printers.  I believe that I am assisting others by issuing this warning.  It is done, not to cause mischief, but in the spirit of a public service.  CS4 users can then treat their printing results from CS4 with caution, and then conduct their own tests.  I have presented a workaround which is to use a prior version of CS4.

  • Colour Management Issues with Leopard and Photoshop CS3

    Hi Everyone,
Since I have installed Leopard I am having colour management issues with Photoshop CS3 and my Canon i9950 printer.
My screen is calibrated with a Spyder and I used to ask Photoshop (in 10.4.11) to manage colour when printing and used the Spyder profile. Everything came out as I saw it on screen.
Now in leopard when I do the same thing everything comes out too yellow on the print. If I ask Photoshop to let the printer manage the colour it is too red. If I use the default colour management (photoshop managing the colour and it choosing the colour space it is better, but still too yellow).
Photoshop gives the hint to turn off colour management in the printer but there is no option for this and it also said the same thing before of course (when it worked in 10.4.11).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I'm having exactly the same problem, only my printer is a Canon Pixma iX4000. The colour is all bleached out, it looks exactly like when you've accidentally printed an RGB file on a CMYK printer, and at first I thought that was what I had done, but it isn't. This is very frustrating, I've spent all day going through the manuals, recalibrating etc, but no luck. This is a brand new Mac Pro and printer, but if its not going to print what I see on screen it's just expensive junk.
I wasn't sure if the problem was Leopard or the printer or CS3...

    >It was working perfectly in Tiger with the monitor profile.
    You were lucky.
the monitor profile is so Photoshop can display your images correctly.
the working space is Adobe RGB, sRGB, BruceRGB, ect... these are all known color spaces so when the file goes to another computer there is a consistent color space for reference. If you use your monitor profile as a working space then nobody else knows what is going on with your file.
when you print you need to use the printer profile for the type of paper you are printing on this is supplied by the printer manufacturer. you can also have custom profiles made.
you need to read up on color management:

You need to use the correct printer profile for the paper you're using. If the printer didn't come with any pre-built profiles, check Canon's web site to see if they have any profiles available for your printer that you can download.
Printer profiles are very specific. You can't take take a profile for glossy Epson paper and expect it to work very well for Canon glossy paper.

  • My problem is that after printing the first photo or picture, when I come to print a second, both the Colour Management and Epson Colour Controls are greyed out and showing No Colour Management

I have recently purchased a Mac computer (updated to Maverick) to go with my Epson Stylus Photo RX500 printer which has given excellent service with my old Windows computer. However, when trying to print pictures or photos via Photoshop Elements 11, the best results I can get are using the Colour Management and Epson Colour controls in the printing options box.
My problem is that after printing the first photo or picture, when I come to print a second, both the Colour Management and Epson Colour Controls are greyed out and showing No Colour Management, The only way I can reset the controls is to shut down the printer and computer and restart.
Could there may be a setting somewhere that I need to adjust please?  I have been in touch with Epson and they say that the Epson Colour controls are part of the Photoshop Elements software but a post on the Adobe forum brought no results and I am unable to contact Adobe.

Hello Garry. Thanks for the reply. I guess I should have used a different title from "How do I post a question?" That should come after trying to resolved the colour settings first. However, to answer your question, after experimenting with all the different settings in Photoshop Elements and Epson software, I now start with PSE11 Colour settings then click "no colour management" then after clicking Print, I choose "More Options/Colour Management/Colour Handling/Printer Manages Colour" then I choose "Page Setup/Layout/Colour Matching" which then shows Epson Colour Controls but I also choose "Layout/Colour Management" which then shows "Colour Controls/Mode" I then of course choose an Epson printer profile depending on the paper I am using. I get good results but as I said, the Colour Matching and Colour Controls are then greyed out. Hope that makes sense.

  • Canon ir5185 printers and EFI Command Workstation

    Hi,
We have three Canon 5185 color printers and are working with CWS 5.0.0.94. The previous version worked functioned fine with almost no problems.
For some reason my CWS (Mac version) is constantly dropping connection with my 3 5185's and it's functionality has become very erratic.
I also have a PC running XP and service pack 2, which is also dropping the connections.
    For instance:
In addition to the servers dropping connection. Jobs that are actually printing not showing up in the printing queue and having to restart the program to see the jobs.
There are some more issues but hope that's enough info.

We have the iRC5185 with H1, which has been updated to system v2.0 (primarily to support Snow Leopard). Canon has supplied us with a later version of CWS, v5.1.0.30, which has been very stable on our Pro's, albeit they are mostly running 10.6 now. You may want to investigate getting this later version.
Does your H1 have system v2.0? This can help with improving the network stability and operation of the RIP.
Also, have you also disabled AppleTalk on the H1, as it can be a cause of the device having network collisions and failing off the network, especially when you are running TCP/IP at the same time.

  • Canon Lide 30 and CS4 -- Not Working Correctly

I've read everything I can find here and still have not found a solution to the following:
    I've moved from a G5 to a 2.66 Quad -- PowerPC to Intel. Running 10.5.8 and CS4.
File>Import does not list the Canon Scanner.
Have done everything I've read about:
    Uninstalled and re-installed Canon Drivers.
    Have Canon Plug-In in CS4>PlugIn>Import/Export
Have Twain from "Goodies" in same folder.
    Repaired permissions.
Shut down and started up, again.
The scanner will work using CanoScan and I can set it to open scan in Photoshop.
VueScan works -- I'm using trial version as a test.
Can anyone get this to work through the Import menu?
    Thanks.
    This is driving me nuts.

the Cannon plugins are probably written for PowerPC. and the default is to not install the TWAIN.plugin its in the goodies folder.
Keep in mind Photoshop has no scanning ability, It uses the plugin to access cannon's stand alone software.
it seems a bit silly to tie up a $1000 application to use a $50 scanner. not many of us use Photoshop to scan with we all use stand alone software I just happen to use VueScan.

  • Newest Video Cards for use with both Premiere Pro CS6 and CS4

Hi, I am currently using PPCS4 and just upgraded to PPCS6. On one system I'm running a GTX 285 and on the other Quadro 2000. Can you tell me which new graphics card in each catagory will be able to run both CS6 and CS4 as I have many programs still setup in CS4? I tried tech sipport with no answer from them. I looked over GTX 570 or 580 for one system and Quadro 4000 for the other but I still have reservations if there will be a problem or not with CS4. Can you help me. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, both systems are running Intel core i7's, one with 24gb ram and the other with 16gb ram. Thanks

CS4 does not really use any advanced features of any card... so a relatively inexpensive AMD/ATI card will do anything a more expensive card will do... for CS4
Starting with CS5 (a complete rewrite of the source code, to go from 32bit to 64bit, plus a LOT of other changes) an nVidia card helps with some actions

For a list of supported nVidia CUDA cards go to the CUDA help page - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/773101
For many others, with at least 1Gig of video ram, use the nVidia Hack http://forums.adobe.com/thread/629557 - which is a simple entry in a "supported cards" file
Which nVidia card you buy will be a combination of 2 factors... how much $$ you want to spend for a given speed level (number of Cuda cores) and the size of your power supply to drive the card

  • Canon iR C5185i and Lion - Dept ID Management

I've been doing a lot of digging around and I can't find too much relating to Lion, but if this question has been answered for the most recent version of OSX then I would greatly appreciate a link.  Most of the answers I find are for Snow Leopard and applying the same tricks just don't seem to work.  I've got a Macbook Pro with all software updates.
We have a Canon ImageRunner C5185i here in our office.  We have Department ID Management enabled for color printing.  I've tried every available combination of drivers from Canon's site and I just can't seem to get our department ID's to pass through to the printer, even though I've stored them in the printer settings.
Most of the time, if I can even get the print job to make it to the printer, the status says "On hold (Authentication required)".  Even if I get into the printer settings and enter my department ID, it won't let me verify the ID against the copier.  It almost always fails.  I've enabled the "Job Accounting" in the driver settings and put my department ID in the driver utility.  My current status, which is the closest to success I've gotten, is that the job makes it to the printer and simply says "Printer is in use.  Waiting for the print job to finish."  There are no other print jobs in memory on the device.  I'm using the Canon iR C5185 UFR II (US) driver at this time and it seems to get me closer than any other driver from Canon.
I was hoping that someone could walk me through finding what drivers I'd need and any tips for making sure my department ID passes through to the device for authentication.  I'm fully capable of following the most technical directions you have, but explain it to me like I'm 5 to make sure I don't miss anything.

    MConcar wrote:
I probably should have mentioned that this device is primarily shared out on our Windows server, but I've also tried printing to IP.  Ideally, we would like to use the Windows queue, but I'll take what I can get.
If you want to use Dept ID from the Mac then you won't be able to print via the Windows server. To support Dept ID the Mac driver needs bidirectional communication with the printer, and it does not get this when printing via a Windows queue - even if you enable LPD. Also, with printing via Windows, your Mac should use the Canon PPD due to issues with the PS and UFR2 drivers via shared queues and the PPD does not support Dept ID''s.
I disabled Department ID Management and got the following results:
Print to IP with UFR driver - "Printer in user. Waiting for the print job to finish".  (Printer was not in use at the time)
Print to IP with PS driver - Job hangs in queue  (Job sent to printer 100%)
Print to IP with PPD - Job hangs in queue ("The printer is busy")
With the PS and UFR2 drivers failing, it would suggest that the LPR in the iR C5185 is turned off, as this is the default protocol both of these drivers use - regardless of what IP protocol you select when adding the queue. As for the PPD, this will use whatever IP protocol you select. So if you did select LPD then this would confirm the matter.
So using the Remote UI (that's the name of the internal web page of the copier) you can select Additional Functions > Custom Settings > Network Settings > TCP/IP and check that LPD is enabled. Note that the path I just wrote could be missing a parameter - I just typed it from memory.
Print to Windows share with UFR driver - "The printed output may be incorrect because the printer information has not been acquired.  Start Printer Utility to get the printer information"
                   -An error occurred.: -50
-Starting Printer Utility does not gather printer information
Print to Windows share with PS driver - Job sent to printer, error NG #853
Print to Windows share with PPD - 21 pages printed out, mostly blank, first page has error ""%!PS-Adobe-3.0, %APL_DSC_Encoding: UTF8, %APLProducer: (Version 10.7.4 (Build 11E53)
For the first two, not surprised with those results because as mentioned above, the UFR2 and PS drivers don't work that well - or at all - when configured to print via a Windows print queue. They must be configured on the Mac to print directly to the imageRUNNER.
The last one is a concern, because it would normally be a sign that the printer does not support Postscript. Do you know which printer driver the Windows computers are using? If they are using the UFR2 driver then maybe your iR C5185 does not have Postscript, which will stop you using the PS and PPD on the Mac. If no one is sure what printer language the iR C5185 supports you can check via the Remote UI. Again via Additional Functions > Custom Settings you should see Printer Settings. And under this heading will be the printer languages supported. If you see UFR2 and maybe PCL (which Windows could also be using) but no PS then this will limit you to using the UFR2 driver on the Mac.
    MConcar wrote:
Would this work better if we were to access the server through OSX Server?  Right now, our Macbooks are bound to our Windows domain.
No. Like Windows server, OS X server does not support Dept ID for clients either. And until you determine what protocol the iR C5185 supports, the server queue will give the same errors as you got on the Mac client.
    So in summary, three things to check;
Does the iR C5185 support Postscript (PS)
Is the LPR protocol enabled in the TCP/IP settings
Which printer driver are the Windows computers using

  • CS4 Colour management issues

I am having problems colour managing images from CS4 photoshop through Espon 2100 inkjet printer. The same images behave more consistantly through iPhoto or aperture. I have tried letting the application control the image, and then the printer controlling the image. The latter is a better result though still a long way off. I always use epson inks and epson paper, and the printer heads/nozzles are clean. I have exhausted all options with the printing company! Thanks!

Thanks twenty_one, I do always do this. The best solution I have so far is to ensure the image opens up in p'shop where the rgb pref is adobe rgb, I then have p'shop set up to notify me if the profile is different to this and if so for the profile to be amended to aRGB. I then let the printer rather then p'shop control the printing, selecting premium semi gloss photopaper, and ensuring that 'no colour adjustment' is not highlighted, but 'colour control/or colour sync' are. This gets me fairly close, and I have to admit the iMac is not colour calibrated. If i send images off to a good printer I always receive prints that match my monitor so I know the calibration is not far off. Thanks for your feedback.

  • Canon Vixia camcorder and Imovie09 anyone have any issues?

Hi I have a 2009 2.66 ghz Quad Core Mac Pro. I plan on purchasing a high definition camcorder, I was very interested in the Canon Vixia series but was concerned because I read that people had issues with their canon Vixia camcorder and Imovie. Should I be concerned? Anyone have any issues with the Canon VIXIA HFS100, HF200, or the HF20 and Imovie09 on their 2009 intel Mac Pro? I don't want to spend 750-900 dollars on a camcorder if I'm going to have issues importing the videos into my mac. Any info is greatly appreciated

    Sheryl Kingstone wrote:
Other issues were around the 1080p is not really 1080p. meaning it says it records 30p, but it imports it at 60i. Don't really understand why.
Today I tried 30p on my Canon HF-S100 for the first time. If I understand correctly it's still saving the video in 60i format -- e.g. all of the odd scan lines in one field, then all of the even scan lines in the next field. The visible difference is that you don't see the interleaving when you view the results in iMovie or Final Cut Pro.
With 30p it's as if the camera captures an entire frame at once, then saves it as two interleaved 60i fields. By contrast, when the camera is recording 60i it captures one field (every other scan line) and records that, then captures and records the other field separately.
In other words, in 60i mode, the subject may move between the recording of the first field and the recording of the 2nd field, resulting in interleave "jaggies". In 30p mode the subject doesn't move between the recording of the fields, since both were captured at the same time.
I wish I could insert some pictures to better explain myself

  • InDesign CS4 - Serious Screen Rendering Issue

I just migrated from the CS2 Suite to CS4 Suite (I uninstalled CS2 Suite first before installing CS4 Suite) on my Windows XP SP3 system.
The first thing I noticed was that InDesign CS4 (ID) had trouble rendering its screens properly when doing common functions. When the issue occurs, only "parts" of the ID app screen will display (see attached figure), and the CPU usage (as shown in Task Manager) goes to 100% usage. At this point, my system grinds to a halt, and I don't know where I am in the ID application because the screen is not fully "painted". All I can do then is shut down ID using the "End Task" option of the Windows Task Manager. As soon as ID closes, my CPU usage immediately goes back to normal (5-10% range).
So far, I've noticed this rendering issue when:
    - I minimize the app to the system tray, then go to maximize it. This happens with or without an ID file open.
    - I am closing/exiting a file
    - any time a lot of screen repainting needs to occur when moving "in" and "out" of ID
This issue may not happen at every instance in the above circumstances, but often enough (90% of the time) to make ID virtually unusable to me. Sometimes, I am able to "jog" ID back to its senses (i.e., a proper repainting of the screen) by navigating through the ID menus. This works only sporadically, however, and the results usually do not last long.
This issue does not show up on any other of my CS4 apps (PhotoShop, Illustrator, Acrobat, etc.), nor on any of my Windows Office 2003 apps. My other colleagues in my department have not seen this issue with their CS4 ID, and some of them are running nearly identical systems as mine (everything but the Dell monitor).
What I've tried so far without any help:
    - used Adobe Updater for the latest CS4 updates (I am running ver. 6.0.2 of ID)
    - ran Windows Update and installed all the latest updates beyond SP3
    - deleted files on my hard drive to free up space (I have 20% free)
    - defragged my hard drive
    - updated my display driver
    - tried various screen resolutions and refresh rates of my display
    Specs of my machine:
    Dell Optiplex GX620
    Pentium 4 3.00 Ghz CPU
    80 GB Hard drive
    4 GB RAM
    Windows XP SP3
    Dell 1907ftp LCD monitor
    IE ver. 6.0.2900
    McAfee 3.6.0.608 virus checking
    Can anyone help?

One thing that is missing from your list of system components is the video card used on your system. And that may be the source of your problems. In general, though, we are not aware of any video problems particular to InDesign 6 as opposed to InDesign 4 which you previously had installed.
Many low-end computers from Dell and others take the low cost route by integrating a graphics display chip, typically from Intel, on the motherboard which does not have its own dedicated graphics memory. It shares memory with Windows. This has several ramifications (pun not really intended, sorry!). The first is that using main memory as video memory means that you have very slow video memory, very much slower than the memory on dedicated graphics cards. The second is that access to that memory competes with disk operations, CPU operations, and virtually everything and anything going on with your system. If in fact your system does have one of these integrated graphics chips in lieu of a real graphics card, there might not be much you can do assuming you have the latest video driver (you said you checked that) unless your Dell OptiPlex allows you to disable the motherboard integrated graphics chip and install a real video card. (To be completely fair, the integrated graphics display chips are perfectly fine for systems that are not running graphically intensive applications - Outlook, Word, and a web browser instance or two work quite well with those configurations.)
Other things that I would check would be disk space as well as fragmentation. An 80GB disk is not that big these days and if most or much of the remaining free disk space is highly fragmented (as it might be after uninstalling CS2, installing CS4, and perhaps doing a whole bunch of Windows updates including SP3), disk operations, including page file operations, might be excrutiatingly slow.

  • ICC profiles- iPhoto colour management issues.

I read in one of the Mac magazines the following regarding the release of iPhoto 5.0.3 ...."images are no longer colour-shifted after editing;....". Does anyone know if this refers to a resolution to the long running problem whereby iPhoto would overide the embedded ICC profile when saving back into iPhoto after editng in Photoshop. I do hope so as this was an unacceptable major flaw in a programme from Apple - a firm which prides itself at being at the forefront of colour management ! I can find no reference to this is in any release notes on the Apple support site - anyone with 'inside knowledge" ?

When I place the files into the document they become noticeably over saturated.
Select the image and check the ICC profile in the Links panel link info. Make sure its profile is the expected blurb CMYK profile. If it's Document CMYK check the document CMYK profile in Edit>Assign Profiles... and make sure it is the Blurb profile. The assigned profile can be different than the Color Setting's working space profile.

  • Colour management issues

    Hi there
I have a problem with the way InDesign displays the colours of photographs.  I have created a book which contains lots of photos.  The oringinal RAW images were exported from LR4 as ProPhoto RGB files, opened in PhotoShop CS5 (working spaces: ProPhotoRGB and Blurb icc profile).  The files were then converted to the Blurb (an online book publisher) CMYK profile and saved as new files.
The InDesign document has the same colour management setting as I used for PS CS5 i.e. RGB colour space: ProPhoto and CMYK colour space: Blurb.icc profile.  When I place the files into the document they become noticeably over saturated.  When the book was finally printed the images were not the same as the InDesign document or print ready PDF.  BUT were a perfect match with the CMYK images opened in PhotoShop.  I'm using a calibriated Eizo monitor, so should not be any issues there.
Has anyone experienced this issue before or can anyone provide a possible explanation?.  Any advice gratefully received.
    thanks

Select the image and check the ICC profile in the Links panel link info. Make sure its profile is the expected blurb CMYK profile. If it's Document CMYK check the document CMYK profile in Edit>Assign Profiles... and make sure it is the Blurb profile. The assigned profile can be different than the Color Setting's working space profile.

  • Colour management issues! help!!!

    Hi,
I have just bought a new printer. an Epson 1430 artisan. And Illustrator won't let me print anything it comes up with an error about colour management being inconsistent.
Just wondering how I can fix this? I need this for my home business and need to use it ASAP.
    Thank you

The monitor calibration becomes important when what you see on the screen does not match what you see in your prints.  What system are you using PC or Mac?  Your monitor may have some controls for such things as brightness.  Check the manual to see how you can achieve a fairly decent brightness level ( depending on the screen itself ).  Look for the monitor control panel on your computer and see if you can find "Display Preferences > Calibrate".  If you have it there are several adjustments that can be made, including "White Point".  As I previously mentioned, the Epson 1430 Artisan has a User's Guide that shows you how to access advanced settings in the Print dialogues.  That printer, along with many others, is a photographic printer that can achieve a decent color gamut.  You have to do some reading and some experiments to establish what works for your particular print application(s).  You almost surely are not limited to photography because you printed using Illustrator.  In Illustrator, you may want to match colors more closely than you would in a photographic environment like Photoshop.  You have told us what type of business and/or what type of printing you do on a daily basis.  Just that colors do not match from what look great on screen to what looks like crap in prints. Color management is a very sophisticate and complex issue that is not quite addressed properly by the average consumer.  But, ask any professional photographer and they can rattle off their settings in a heartbeat.  Open up Illustrator's Color Settings > Advanced dialogue and take a look at some of the work spaces you have to choose from.  Look at things like "Rendering Intent" and "Black Point Compensation".  I'm a graphic designer.  I select and maintain ( in Illustrator ) Rendering Intent = Relative Colorimetric.  I have "Black Point Compensation" selected or "ON".  My RGB workspace is Adobe RGB; CMYK workspace is US Sheetfed Coated ( SWOP ) v2. My document color space is always CMYK.  See if you get some better results using them.  By the way, most, if not all, monitors are sold with a White point and brightness too high for Illustrator work.
