Warning Error in opening Aperture

I am running Aperture 3.4.5 I was in the middle of downloading some photos from my son's new iPhone 5c when Aperture stopped responding - I removed the phone and yet in the Import section it was still listed as there - then my iMAC stopped responding so I restarted everything - consequently when I relaunched Aperture I receive the Warning - that there was an error opening the database for the library and only option is to quit.
I have reviewed the support posts - I was able to see the Repair option when launching Aperture with the Option & Command key pressed - I selected repair but to no avail and now I can't get back to that Repair Window as it doesn't appear.
I have opened Aperture with a newly created Library however have not been able to import my original library which I am now getting concerned about as it would still appear to be damaged.
I am now worried that my original library is too large as it's 122gb - where should I back this unto - I have an external drive
Any further Pointers please??
Thank you

How much free disk space do you have on your iMac?  Can it be, that you are running out of space?

Is Aperture working with your new library?
consequently when I relaunched Aperture I receive the Warning - that there was an error opening the database for the library and only option is to quit.
Usually this error message is accompanied by an error log in the error panel. Can you copy and past the message into your next post? The first fifty lines should suffice, to get an idea if the error log is helpful.
To make a backup of your Aperture library drag and drop it to your external drive.

  • Aperture wont op "To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly." error when opening aperture 3.4.5 library.

Have been using fine up until Wednesday this week and suddenly cannot open file at all.
I have around 10K images on drive but file size for library says 0bytes. When I use Alt to open it shows file and shows correct number of versions and originals but then gives the  error re permissions when trying to open.
Have tried the repaire permissions, repair database and rebuild database all give same error about permissions and fail to start.
    HELP!
    Regards
    James.

I think I set it to keep the images in the library not referenced but the drive did contain many pictures before I started using Aperture so i need to bring them into the library.
How large is your library now, and how much space can you afford for your Aperture library on your internal drive?
Or do you have a second exernal drive, that you could format MacOS Extended (journaled) to be able to temporarily host your Aperture library?
Do you need the "Tuxera NTFS" formatting on your external drive to share image files with other systems, or would it be an option to reformat that drive?
If you are more comfortable with a managed ibrary, by all means keep the library managed. Only it needs to be on a drive formtated MacOS X Extended (Journaled). It could be your inernal drive, if you have enough space or a locally connected external drive. Connect it to the fastest port you have; Firewire, or Thnderbolt, a fast USB port.
Move the library there, then import the images, that you now have in separate folders on your externa drive. To prevent Aperture from importing duplicates, enable the option "Do not import Duplicates" in the import panel. If you are lucky, Aperture will recognize many of the duplicates. if you have not changed the filenames.
I have to sign off for the next couple of hours, but will look in later.

Try running a repair on the library. Hold the command and option keys down while starting Aperture, this will open the repair window. Select Repair Library.

  • Access denied to Aperture backup on external drive.  When I hold the comman key adn open aperture to acces a remote drive I receive the message "There was an error opening the database for teh library "/Volumes/VERBATIM HD/Aperture Library BU.aplibrary".

When I attempt to open an Aperture backup on a remote drive using the Command key when opening Aperture., I receive the message-
    How do access these files?

How do I copy the libray onto another drive?  Drag & drop?  Can I put it onto my iMac drive without loosing the Aperture files already there?
yes, you can drag the library to your internal drive. if it has the same name as your current Aperture library rename it or drag it to a different folder.
I followed the instrucitons when formatting the drive, although I would not rule out an operator error
You can see the name of the file system on the drive, when you select the drive in the Finder and press the key combination ⌘I (for File > Get Info). The file system will show in the "General" brick of the Info panel.

Sonny3300, your signature says "Aperture 2" - is that correct? Then you need this trouble shooting guide:

What is your Operating system version and where is your library located? Have imported new images recently or changed the location of your library?

Trying to open Aperture, but I get the message, "There was an error opening the database for the library “/Users/davewasson/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”. - and it forces me to quit. What do I do?

    Dave-
You can try opening the old (problem) library by launching Aperture into Library First Aid mode and choosing to Repair (first option) or Rebuild the library. Before doing this, make a backup copy of the old library, since both Repair or Rebuild will write changes to the library database.
Repair is the faster and less drastic option, so try that first: After backing up your library, hold down both the Option and Command keys while dragging and dropping the problem library on the Aperture icon. The Photo Library First Aid window appears. Select Repair Database, then click Repair. After some time Aperture should open the library, if possible.
If that fails launch Aperture back into Library First Aid and select Rebuild Database. Depending on the size of your library this operation could take some time, up to several hours for a very large library. When the main window appears you may have some extra Recovered folders/projects. This operation rebuilds the library from scratch and is usually successful at reviving problem libraries.

Then I'd check the system drive, if it has problems.
To check your System drive boot into the Recovery Partition, see: OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery
Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up.
You will see a panel, where you can use Disk Utility to check your System Drive.

  • I can't open aperture-  I get this message:  There was an error opening the database for the library "/Users/Kristy/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary". :

I can't seem to open Aperture, don't know how to back up the library (I have pics I just put on Aperture last week that aren't backed up) so I can just rebuild the library.  Will I lose all my pics if I choose to rebuild the library?

don't know how to back up the library
Simply drag your Aperture library to an external drive with enough free disk space to make a backup copy for now.
What happened before you first got this error message? Did you import new images into Aperture? Did you install new software? Or update software?
Did you move your aperture library to a new location?
Does the panel with the error message show an error log? What does it say? The first 50 lines will suffice.
Will I lose all my pics if I choose to rebuild the library?
Rebuild is a save standard trouble shooting operations. But it may take a long time, and if your mac has other problems, in interruption of the rebuild may make things worse, so don't do it without copying your library some where safe.

  • Help! Can't open Aperture: error message

After doing some work with a new printer (Epson Stylus Pro 3000) I restarted my Mac Quad Pro and attempted to open Aperture.
I got the error message: "There was an error opening the database for the library '~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary.'"
I checked the disk on Disk Utility which informed me that the disk was corrupted and that I needed to repair it from the initial disk, (as well as Repair Permissions).
Any advice on how to proceed to get Aperture back?
Thank you very much, Susan Rennie

Did you perform the Disk Utility repairs? Did they complete successfully? If not you need to get that done first.
If so and you are still having problems opening Aperture you should do the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
and let us know if that fixes your problem.

  • TS3231 Help!! I can't open Aperture, I get a warning message and then it quits.

When I try to open Aperture, I get this message: "There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”. " Is there a way to fix this??
    Any help is really appreciated!!

Where is your Aperture Library located? On your System drive or on an external drive?
So I have tried the Troubleshooting basics, and none of them worked.
Have you tried all of them? Rebuilding the database? Removing the preferences?
If not, try those as well.
If that does not help, try id´f Aperture runs at all. Launch it with the⌥-key held down and create a new, empty library, by selecting other/new.
Try if you can work with this library and import images and edit image.
If this should succeed, check if you can import your old library into the new one by going to the File-menu and selecting "Import > Library".
Post back, if this does not succeed.
