Warning Illegal Angle - Back to iDVD

Just upgraded from FCP3 to Studio 2 and tried to use DVD Studio Pro for the first time this morning and failed miserably. I created a 52 minute video yesterday in FCP then exported to Compressor. It was a simple video with NO audio (soccer scrimmage). Aside from the fact that both FCP and Compressor don't seem too stable (Activity Monitor showed some of their processes as not responding during the whole process), everything seemed to work OK. However, when trying to build a DVD with DVD Studio Pro, I kept getting the "Warning: Illegal Angle..." message when testing via simulation.
I finally gave up and went back to iDVD which worked fine. Are the studio tools so unstable as to be not usable for such simple tasks?
Granted - I know I have a whole new learning curve to climb, but my initial experience has been very frustrating. Any suggestions on solving the "illegal angle" problem? Is it an FCP, Compressor or DVD Studio app problem?

I've been using DVDSP for many years, since v1. I don't have any odd problems with the software; nothing that is not clearly a user error.
I've never seen "illegal angle" in the errors I've gotten but I'd strongly urge you to try DVDSP with a far more conventional project so you can learn how it works. Earlier versions came with some interesting and very helpful tutorials but I haven't bothered to even look for them for many ears. They may no longer be included.

  • Simulation error: "Warning - Illegal angle situation"

    Hi there,
I've just produced a three camera edit in FCP and I'm now trying to cut to DVD in Studio Pro.
I keep getting hit with the same message when trying "simulator". I have 13 chapters..all of which come up with this error when I try to skip to them.
"Warning: Illegal angle situation. Only the Main Video Angle will be simulated".
I've gone back into FCP and deleted all references to the "angles". I've exported onto tape and then recaptured..put back on the timeline and exported again..reimported into DVD Studio and it still appears.
I'm running out of ideas. Can anyone please help me?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,
Thanks for all your efforts here guys.
I'd say the "angle" issue is resolved...but now when I import the asset into DVD SP and try to put on timeline I'm getting the following error...
"Or or more clips could not be added to stream.
Incompatible GOP Structure. Last Valid Time Code at 00:00:00:00
I have exported using compressor and opted for MPEG2 option. I chose CBR one pass and ensured GOP was set to "closed". I thought if it was "closed" then it wouldn't look for that in DVD Studio but it still seems to. I'm trying just about every setting in compressor that I can find and basically I'm going nuts trying ot work it out.
Please don't give up on me

  • Advanced mixed-angle "illegal angle situation"...stumped!!

First off, I would like to thank in advance anyone who takes the time to read my detailed post and tries to help. I have read the posts on this topic before, but I have not been able to solve my problem.
    In detail:
I am doing a project for a client, and part of this project involves a mixed-angle track. We shot several different camera angles of his car (two from within the car, one stable tripod shot as the car passed the camera coming towards you, one stable shot as the car passed driving away from you). There were four different angles shot, and one combined FCP shot showing all four simultaneously for a total of 5)
    Step one-the angles:
Angle 1 (V1): From 01:00:00:00 to 01:01:02:22 (A FCP edited shot with all the clips sized down to about 40% of original size so all angles are visible simultaneously.)
Angle 2 (V2): From 01:00:00:00 to 01:01:02:22 (A shot of taken from the sunroof view of the car as it drives. This shot is the only one with the same length as Angle0)
Angle 3 (V3) From 01:00:03:01 to 01:00:51:25 (A shot taken from the passenger side as the car drives with the rear view mirror slightly in shot. As you see, this shot does NOT run the length of V1 or V2)
Angle 4 (V4) From 01:00:11:11 to 01:00:28:28 (A tripod shot taken from a specific spot on the road with "its back" to the car as it comes towards the camera, so the view is of the car as it is driving away)
Angle 5 (V5) From 01:00:27:17 to 01:00:50:22 (Another tripod still video shot taken from a different spot on the road facing the car as it comes towards the camera, so that the view of the car is an approaching view, and the car passes the camera.
Audio is a combined sound of all four events as they occur mixed togther to form one Dolby 2.0 ac3 stream at 192kbs.
All of these shots are synched up as they happened in real time, and in looking at the various FCP timecodes, you can see that the different video angles "weave" in and out of one another.
Some various markers were placed on the footage in synching it up (NOT chapter markers for this purpose..only timing) and those were left in the individual clips.
Step two-once the video was synched, a separate FCP sequence was created for each angle to be encoded for use in DVDSP4. I then placed Chapter markers-precisely accurate to the frame where EACH video event intersected another. (Example: Angle starts at 01:00:03:01 so I put chapter markers at this precise point on angle 1 and 2 as well) Chapter markers were placed on any and all intersections of beginnings or ends of the angles that weaved in and out of other angles. This was done so the GOP's would match for later transcoding.
    Step three-transcoding with Compressor.
    Exact setttings for first run..
Video-(apple preset) DVD: Best Quality 120 minutes - 4:3. The ONLY change made to the audio or video preset was checking the INCLUDE CHAPTER MARKERS ONLY box in the extras portion of the video encoders for all tracks so the encoding would ignore all markers but my chapter placements.
Audio-Dolby 2.0 preset within the blanket apple preset mentioned above.
Step four-Entry into DVDSP track for trial run.
    Exact steps:
    Dropped angle 1 into V1
Dropped angles 2-5 into V2-V5 in accordance to the chapter markers governing where these angles should be "sandwiched." No problems here...no error messages. Flawless. Everything going well to this point.
Step 5-Ctrl, Simulate Track...and...here it comes...
"Warning-Illegal angle situation. Only the main video angle will be simulated."
Step 6-Went to Apple Discussion boards. Saw the various posts regarding the maximum bit rate being lower than 7 just to be on the safe side, and VBR turned off to be absolutely safe.
Step 7-Re-transcode all video angles with one pass, non VBR, "include chapter markers only" checked, and max bit rate of 6.5-same audio file as orginal attempt. Dropped video angles again into the respective timing containers in DVDSP. Once again, we get "Warning-illegal angle situation. Only the main video angle will be simulated."
I am stumped. I have tried to describe my process up to this point as precisely as possible and am also on a strict deadline. The mixed-angle feature was a big selling feature for us to this client. I know and hope the answer to this issue is something simple.
Again, thank you in advance! These message boards have always been a great help because of the generosity of those in the Mac family!!

Thank you all for your responses. Here are my several confusions, however.
As long as the GOP's line up, I was under the impression that a MIXED, (not a MULTI) angle project does NOT have to have clips of the same length. Or at least this is what I read in the Ramseier/Sitter Certified training book on DVDSP. This is pulled right from the book:
    "About Alternate Angles
DVDSP lets you create two different types of alternate angle tracks:
Multi-angle tracks, in which each angle is exactly the same length as the main video stream.
Mixed-angle tracks, which include alternate video streams that are shorter in duration than the main video stream. Where there's a space in the mixed-angle stream, DVD players revert to the main video stream, which they play until the mixed angle appears again. Mixed angles save disc space for alternate angle streams that do not need to run the length of the entire track. Technically, all angles in the mixed-angle tracks must be sandwiched by markers-one marker at the front, and one marker at the back."
The frustration of this is that I have been successful with Multi-angle tracks. Because I am working with a DVD-5, I cannot afford the space to have ALL these angles run the length of the entire mixed angle clip that I mentioned above. Chapter markers were placed at all intersecting points to the frame, and "include chapter markers only" was checked so that the GOP's would line up precisely with one another.
The only thing I have not tried is compressing at the lowest possible CBR I can while trying to maintain the quality of this footage with minimal motion artifacts. As I said, this is footage of several angles of a car accelerating to the speed of 85mph...so I am also limited to how low I can compress because I will get nothing but blur after awhile. I will try to recompress with the lowest possible CBR as suggested.
This is such a small part in the perspective of the overall whole of this project for my client, but it is extremely important. Again, I appreciate all support and free-time you all have given, and any additional detailed suggestions are desperately welcomed!
    Peace

  • "illegal angle situation" on single angle project

i'm trying to build and burn a DVD made from a TV broadcast, which only has a single angle. when i view it in the inspector i get the warning "illegal angle situation", and when i try to build i get a "track 1: missing marker for angle situation" error.
unless i have done something by accident there should only be one angle. i have only one track, though the track is made up of two mpeg files, one immediately after the other (different tv programmes).
please could someone let me know how i can fix this problem ? i'm resisting starting over again because i spent a couple of hours inserting chapter markers. (as far as i know there is no way to export these markers from Studio Pro ...)
any help or advice much appreciated. thanks !

thanks very much for your response - after magnifying the timeline i discovered a short clip on the V2 track at the same point i joined two assets on V1 - it must have gotten there by accident and i couldn't see it on the normal view of the track editor. now it's been deleted all seems well.
    many thanks,

  • Illegal angle problem

I'm composing a DVD without a menu as I want it to play the audio and video right as the user inserts the disc. The simulation looked great. But when I hit the Burn button I got a warning telling me there was an "Illegal Angle Situation, only the main video angle will be simulated". To be honest this is the first I've ever seen this. I've looked through the new FCP Studio 2 documentation and have yet to find anything referring to an illegal video angle for anything. If anyone has any ideas about the solution to this I'd appreciate the help. Thanks a ton in advance!

What I did was export the footage edited in FCP6 to Compressor. When Compressor launched I chose the settings for DVD-Best Quality-90 minutes as this whole video won't last more than 10 minutes, tops. When the encoding was complete I launched DVD Studio Pro, created a new project, dragged the two files (Dolby Digital, MPEG-2) to the tracks folder in the Outline window. As I wanted to have this DVD play as soon as it's inserted I used the instructions for that found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93812
I simulated the DVD and everything looked great. Then when I tried to burn the DVD the whole thing went heathen. As this is my first DVD project using FCP Studio 2 I'm sure it's probably something simple. But again, any help you render is greatly appreciated. So thank you very much, Hal!

  • Illegal angle situation

Searched through and found one topic on this but it didn't seem to provide a solution to my issue.
Basic stuff. Making a 4:3 SD DVD with one button to play the movie. the movie properties are "MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass.m2v". I'm taking a button from buttons palette, linking it to the movie and when I run "Simulate" and click on the button i get the "Warning. Illegal angle situation. Only the main video angle will be simulated." Every time I click the button I get this.
Been using DVD Studio Pro since the beginning and I've never seen this warning before. Any ideas? there was a fix in another thread (deleting then relinking the movie), but it didn't help.

  • Java applet warning keeps coming back for signed applet

I have an applet signed with certificate issued by a public CA cert verisign. This applet prints document to the printer. When it loads everything looks good and checks on the screen and the user is prompted to allow access to the printer. Even, though the user selects "Allways allow this applet to print" the warning keeps coming back everytime the applet attempts to access the printer.
I notice other applets work correctly. I veriy the signed jar and it all looks correct every class file comes with smk marking.
What is going, can someone please help???
    Manuel

I appreciate the help. but i was able to resolve the problem. Our web page called the applet print method directly from scripting. Apparently that causes the java plugin to warn the user every time.
To avoid this issue the new print method queues up a print job and a separate thread watches for the queue and picks up the job and prints it. In order to support the same original function, the new print method is syncronized and waits for the job to be queued before it returns.
Now, there are no warnings even the first time you use the applet.

  • Illegal angle problem as I insert an Aiff file...?

I inserted an Aiff audio file but when I click on the button to play it, an error message appears "illegal angle situation. Only the main angle will be simulated."
    OK.
    On pressing OK, nothing happens.
    Does DVDSP not like Aiffs?

Also, - I just converted it to an AC3 using Compressor and get the same error message. So it looks like its not an aiff issue as such?
The issue is, I think, the fact that I am inserting an audio file only with no associated video stream. I just want to play the audio with a blank screen.
    V1 is empty.

  • Illegal angle prompt?

I get this error prompt when I import a jpeg for the slide show and go to simulate because I want to see if the button works for taking me to each slide.
"Illegal angle situation. Only the Main Video Angle will be simulated."
What does this mean? I don't see it in the Manual or in the Help section.

I asked this question because I'm making a slide presentation and i don't see any information on this issue when you're making a slide show. I hope someone can help me.

  • Illegal angle situation without multiple angles

I have a project that worked fine last time I opened it (a few months ago). No multiple angles. It does have subtitles. Upon opening today when I simulate I get this error when clicking to open several of the video sequences: "Illegal angle situation. Only the main video angle will be simulated." Absolutely the only thing I've changed is I had to relink to some of the assets that I'd moved onto an external drive for archiving. My video tracks have stories, chapter markers, etc. so I really don't want to delete them and recreate. Any help?
    PowerMac Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Are you using encoded media or .mov source files? Have you tried locating and removing the PAR files that DVDSP creates when you import footage?
Are you using compatible audio files?
Any information about all of these things will help narrow it down a bit, if Drew13's suggestion doesn't help.

  • "Illegal angle situation. Only the Main Video Angle will be simulated."

    Hi y'all!
Trying to export my .mov out of DVD Studio pro and getting the message 'Illegal angle situation. Only the Main Video Angle will be simulated.' when I try to simulate. There's no video in the V2 track so guessing I need to fix up the GOP or angles, but I don't know where or what to change them to.
Project is an hour long, NTSC, 16:9, 29.97fps

Check your preferences for Track - check the Fix Invalid Markers on Build box.  Should do the trick, though you may need to quit DVD SP and reopen to make sure the changes to preferences "stuck."  It sounds like you are using only one video track and do not have multiple angles (video), audio or other extras, just a straight m2v and audio track.  There are some other things that can cause the issue, like using VBR when using multiple video tracks.  But see if this takes care of it.

  • Need To go back to IDVD 3

Because of Imovie 6 (which is really slow and I have no patience) I have to go back to IDVD 3. That is, I reinstalled Imovie 3 and need Idvd 3 to burn the project as it will not run on Idvd 6. I tried using Software Restore, but after upgrading to the latest Tiger, Software Restore is not working. So I tried using Pacifist to extract Idvd 3 from the Software Restore dvd and Pacifist is unable to find Idvd 3. Any suggestions?

To simplifiy my iLife, I bought this when I needed to restore iDVD 3 themes:

  • Exported iMovie in 16:9, but video is 4:3-can I switch back in iDVD?

I created a project in iMovie '11.  I had inadvertantly kept it at a 16:9 ratio even though the file/video was 4:3.  I then sent it to iDVD.
There, I have the option of making the project 4:3 or 16:9.  If I put the project at 4:3, will it basically put the ratio back the way it is suppose to be on the video?  Or will the file be a bit distorted and/or quality be compromised?
I was hoping, actually, to have at least the menu in 16:9 even though the video is 4:3 (ie, menu 16:9 and video 4:3).  Is this possible?  If it is, I'd assume I'd have to go back to iMovie and switch the project being published to 4:3.
So, my question boils down to no matter what, should I go back to iMovie and republish in 4:3, or does it not matter in iDVD as long as you set the project at 4:3? (I probably won't go through the hassle of republishing in 4:3 to get menu only at 16:9, but wanted to know for future reference if it is possible as I have many more DVD's to create.)

    Lut,
    Welcome to the forum.
What are the full specs. of your MOD, and M2v files? If you do not know exactly, you can use G-Spot, or MediaInfo, to gather that info.
That info might help pinpoint the issue.

    Hi
    I hope someone can help
I made a movie on iMovie HD and deleted quite a lot of the sound from my clips ( mini dv of a christening - the conversation wasn't great !) and put music behind it. The sound is NOT there when i watch it back, its not on the time line ticked etc - its gone.
When I share it to i DVD - its back - but only half way through and then its fine - as it is in iMovie HD. I have no idead what the difference is .
When i share it to ipod - it is as it is in Movie HD
    What have i done that i can't see ???
PLease help - i am meant to show it to people on Saturday !
    Thanks sooo much
    Kelly

    Hi m
    You can try this:
    First close iMovie
Locate Your movie project icon (with a star on it)
    ctrl-click on it
select - show package (or content)
in this there is a folder Shared Movie
in this there is a folder iDVD
HERE You find a QT.mov file - double click on it
    it will play in QT-player
    - IS IT OK here ?
if Yes then start a new iDVD project (don't use the old one)
drop this QT.mov file (Your project name instead of QT) into iDVD theme window
Now try this one with iDVD play function
    still OK ??
    burn a DVD
    Yours Bengt W
