Warning lights on XRAID but RAID Admin won't mount it.

I have 3 Final Cut edit suites sharing 2 x 7TB XserveRAIDs.
I had an audible alarm on one of my RAIDs an amber flashing light by the System Identifier Button.
Edit 2 started up fine and my editor was happily working away. I then went Edit 2 to mount the RAID storage - made up of 2 x 7TB XserveRAIDs each split into 2 partitions providing a total of 4 volumes creating my volume based SAN. As I tried to mount the RAIDs using SANmp I had real issues. Eventually got the volumes mounted but then had the greyed out screen of doom when I tried loading up a Final Cut Pro project and had to do a forced shut down.
Edit 2 was still working but I then had similar problems in Edit 1 - not able to mount partitions and unable to load projects.
I tried looking up the RAIDs on the RAID Admin Tool but I'm only seeing 1 RAID when I should be seeing 2. The AID that is mounted is not giving me any errors which makes me think I've lost communication with the RAID with the problem.
Should I just shut the whole system down and hope it starts talking to me again when I fire it up again?
I just want to get on an edit my show.
Thanks.

William: Thanks for your reply, but you seem to be wide of the target here.
RAID Admin can connect to the RAID,
but doesn't see drives?
No. I can run RAID Admin on the Xserve or on a separate laptop, and either way RAID Admin can't find any RAIDs to show in the list of available RAIDs. So it doesn't even get to the stage where it can see any individual drives, since it doesn't find the RAID unit in the first place.
The red light you're seeing, as well as the
fact that Disk Utility can see all the drives
as individuals,
Clarification: Disk Utility is showing symbols for drives, but of course these are really partitions of the RAID, not the individual physical hard drives in the RAID.
indicates that either stuff is set in JBOD mode
... well I'd love to report what mode it's in, but RAID Admin won't show me . However, judging by the fact that there's no part of the file system that's obviously missing, (and also by our original intent when this was set up) I'm 99.9% sure it's in some redundant mode, and 99.8% sure that is simply in default RAID-5 mode.
or something is seriously wrong...
... depending on the meaning of "seriously"!
I'd guess the RAID set (and any data that
was on it) is gone.
... though as I noted in original post, it's in everyday use, including by me, and I've not detected any missing data, aside from a handful of files (out of total approx 2 million files) that return read errors.

  • RAID Admin won't launch...

10.3.9 OSX server with RAID Admin 1.5
Everytime I try to launch raid admin it just bounces in the Dock and then stops. Never launches. I have tried deleting prefs, reinstalling the raid admin tool, repairing permissions and restarting, all with no luck.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you

I have the same update installed, and I don't have any problems. I'm on 10.4.4 though.
The console may have some information as to what's going on. Alternatively, as RAID Admin is a Java application, you can just run it manually. It's a lot of typing, but open up a terminal, and cust and paste this:
    java -jar /Applications/Utilities/Xserve\ RAID\ Update/RAID\ Admin.app/Contents/Resources/Java/RAID_Admin.jar
Hit return and see what happens.
If you don't get any output which indicates a problem, try running it again in verbose mode:
    java -verbose -jar /Applications/Utilities/Xserve\ RAID\ Update/RAID\ Admin.app/Contents/Resources/Java/RAID_Admin.jar
Post the output here -- preferably to the first one. The verbose output may exceed the posting limits here

  • RAID Arrary won't Mount

I'm having some issues mounting my RAID on xserver Xeon, yesterday in order to mount the drive I had to go to RAID admin/utilities/make drive available for use, this process erased all the data and mounted the drive, but today after rebooting the server, the drive won't mount, I can't use the same fix as yesterday because my users have dumped a bunch of data on the drive which I can't erase, besides, even when I choose that option, the "make available" button is greyed out. any ideas on how I can mount the drive without having to erase the data?
    Thanks in advance.
    Ayo.

This sounds like a controller problem, where either one or both controllers are not properly seated, or one of the controllers is bad. Try powering off the array and reseating both controllers before powering back on. If that does not resolve the problem, you may have a bad controller. Have you checked the status of the controllers in RAID Admin and are you seeing any errors in the log?

  • Disks in RAID "Offline" - won't mount

I can't get my mirrored RAID 1 array to mount. This comes after a forced shutdown. These are external firewire disks, daisy-chained, and hooked up to a G4's firewire port.
The drives power up fine, show up in Disk Utility, and even spin up when I click the "Mount" button, but they never show up on the desktop.
I tried to verify the array, and I got this error message:
    Verifying volume “Acomdata RAID”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid key length
    Invalid key length
Catalog file entry not found for extent
The volume needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
I click the "Mount" button, and the log says: "Mount of “Acomdata RAID” succeeded", but the Disk Utility window still shows the disk as Unmounted, and it never shows up on my desktop.
I've tried starting up the computer with disks already turned on, and also turning them on after the computer fully boots.
I tried booting from a Panther disk, and from a Tiger disk, and running Disk Utility from there. Panther doesn't even see it, and Tiger gives me the same error message. DiskWarrior sees the disk as "Unknown Disk".
The one clue I can find is in the RAID pane:
It shows the 2 RAID slices as "Offline", but I can't find anyway to put them online. Anyone have some ideas? Is this offline thing even matter?

    Bonjour Benoit,
You probably have to get "under the hood" with the RAID command-line utilities.
    Open Terminal.app, and type in
    sudo diskutil checkRAID
and give it your own password when it asks, and see what happens.

  • TS3048 My keyboard will connect wirelessly but my mouse will not. I've put new batteries in the mouse and the green light is blinking but it just won't connect!!! I don't have a 'wired' mouse so I can't get into preferences etc!!! Pls help

My keyboard will connect wirelessly but my mouse will not. I have tried many times, put new batteries in etc. The Bluetooth appears to be on (as the wireless keyboard is working). I don't have a 'wired' mouse so I can't get into preferences etc. Is the mouse dead perhaps? The green light is flickering so it should be ok???
    Thank you for your help
    Sully (frustrated Irishman)

From what you say I would suggest the batteries are not connecting properly.
First, thoroughly clean all contacts, both inside the mouse and the contact points of the batteries.  Use an alcohol based cleaner (whisky will do, hic!)  dampen (not wet) cotton buds for cleaning.
Then check to see if they fit firmly.   If you can shake your mouse and hear things are loose, that will be the batteries.   Check the make.   Apple and Duracell, in that order, are the best batteries.   Where slight undersizing has been reported they are with other than the foregoing.
You can resolve the size problem with appropriate packing but that will always be a makeshift solution.  After, reassemble, turn on the mouse and with luck, away you go.
Hopefully this will solve your problem but in any case let us know how you get on.

  • Upgraded to 10.5 server from 10.4 but Server Admin won't upgrade Apache 2

I am attempting to upgrade an Intel XServe from Mac OS X Server 10.4 to 10.5. Everything goes perfect with all services and setting restored. However, when I attempt to use the Apache upgrade option in Server Admin to switch to Apache 2, it fails with the error:
"The server reported the error: 'CANNOTTRANSLATEERR' while processing a command of type: 'setApacheMode'"
The server itself is a modest set-up. It is essentially a private web server running only ftp, http, mail, a firewall, and about 20 users. I am also hosting two of the domains on https with certs.
I figured this has something to do with translating the Apache 1.3 config files. I am working on development machine with a clone of the server so I have been trying everything I can think of or find on the net to cure this but have had no luck. I have searched several Mac-centric forums and have found nothing.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, I did try 127.0.0.1 as well as the OS given domain ddeweb.local and even localhost. But no luck. In addition, I also tried various things with the config files in /etc/apache2 up to and including complete replacement of the entire /etc/apache2 directory with one from a clean 10.5 server install. That didn't even work.
The other thing I tried in an attempt to rule out the virtual host files was to disable all but the default host config which was refreshed with the default config. Still didn't work.
As for the output from in the terminal app:
Oddly enough the serveradmin command produced nothing. It just came back with the prompt.

Tried to mount the disk but was unable. Said to run utility to repair. Whewwww...

It looks like you're going to have to do that, since DiskWarrior won't run, so you can't tell what might be wrong with the disk. I'd zero out the drive and then restore from your backup if possible; otherwise I'd reinstall from the OS X install discs, then Repair Disk, Repair Permissions, and then update to 10.4.7 using the 10.4.7 Combo Update.

    Ok..so I have an eMac (2004)
    SuperDrive PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D
CDs & DVDs with data AND DVDs burned for DVD players DO MOUNT.
Then a DVD from Netflix loaded..so everything seems to work except DVDs burned to MEMOREX DVD-R.
A friend converted VHS stuff for me to DVD from a Panasonic VHS to DVD converter. Some DVDs mounted. The MEMOREX media he used did not. They do not want to mount.
So I will be testing other media again from this converter..But we have seem to have found a problem with MEMOREX media. (recordable 16x 4.7GB)
Also tried resetting the PRAM and looked all over for issues with my Pioneer SuperDrive. Found nothing
eMac Mac OS X (10.3.9) also have an iBook G4, G5 dual,

Memorex Media is Fair at best. Some of the older Optical Drives do not expieriance the problems that the newer drives have.
When you are burning be sure you friend has his settings correct for Mac and PC compatiblity.
Here is a Media quide to use when purchasing.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Next be sure if you are using the newer high speed media that you read the back of the packaging and the media will burn at the lower speeds . It will read that this media will burn at 1X, 2X, 4X, 8X, and 16X. so no matter the drive you have it will burn this media.
Also, as you already know stick with DVD-R Media it is the most widely recognised and used, for computers and players alike.

  • My macbook pro got wet and the battery light is still on but my macbook won't turn on. What's the problem?

My mabook pro got wet the other night, the battery light still works but my macbook won't turn on and should i just wait for it to completely dry up? Or what should i do to solve this problem?

Just face facts - if water (or any other liquid) reached you logic board or any other electronic components, you're going to be the victim of corrosion.
Eventually, you'll need to have the logic board replaced. There are liquid sensors all over your MBP and the techs can tell if these have been activated. I wouldn't turn the computer on at all - if it were me, I would take it to your local Apple Store/AASP and get an estimate for repair. Rice & other desiccates may 'dry up' the liquid, but it won't undo the damage already done.

  • XRAID won't mount

For some reason our XRAID (RAID 50) won't mount on the desktop anymore. Restarted everything multiple times to no avail. Disk Utility sees it, but complains about node structure when trying to either mount or eject it. Thinking of running Disk Warrior on it as I am running out of options. Any help appreciated!

to be more clear, when I try to mount through Disk Utility, it says the volume cannot be mounted and I should run First Aid. When running First Aid, I get the invalid node structure error.

  • RAID Admin reality check -- this software needs serious work

Folks: This is a combination rant about RAID Admin 1.5 (on OSX 10.3.9) and plea for any suggestions for things I may have missed.
RAID Admin -- an utterly crucial tool for responsibly administering an X Serve RAID, itself offered for use in mission critical applications. But RAID Admin is just one frustration after another.
    1. Can't start due to broken Java or somesuch. As reported by several others elsewhere, and experienced herre, some QT upgrade breaks ability to launch RA. Thee's a "solution" of rolling back QT -- doesn't work. There's a command-line workaround for launching, but if this is really broken Java, how can you trust other functions of RA? Anyhow, we're running it from console of X Server with non-recent-QT.
    2. Finding the RAID Array is totally hit or miss. (And BTW -- don't get hosed by the little feature that it's not sufficient to have the RAID hooked up by fiber... you also have to have the ethernet cables connected). Sometines RA finds the nearby RAIDs by itself, sometimes it finds one of two, sometimes none... figure on entering the IP addresses by hand.
    3. Serious memory leak. Leave RA running for a few hours and it ***** up >100% CPU (on dual G4), huge amount of memory, and is almost completely unresponsive (apparently due to huge disk activity to swap virtual memory). Example: after 12 hours uses 372 Meg of real memory and 1.3 G of VM. Quit and restart fixes the problem... but do you really want to do that in midst of lengthy admin operation?
    4. Array Conditioning: Seems like a great idea -- but how can you tell whether it's doing anything useful? It generates errors to the event window showing bad blocks.... OK great... what do they mean? Is it fixing them? Where is its output? Maybe we could learn that from the docs....
    5. Oh right... no docs. Still stuck on RA 1.2 docs. No mention of Array Conditioning found anywhere in Help, or at apple.com... except to advertise that the feature exists.
    Graham

William, thanks for your response, comments inline below:
I have not personally experienced any of the first 3
issues you note. And I've run RAID Admin on 30-40
different systems, and monitored 100+ RAIDs, over the
    past 3 years.
... it is good to hear a general level of satisfaction...
Are you experiencing this on just one system --
have you ever tried another machine?
What do you mean? We have one X Serve, and one RAID, and that's the one we need to admin. How would we introduce another machine into the scenario?
I'd suggest that your Java installation has
    serious issues.
Why would you suggest that? As I noted, the Java-suspected issue was not on the machine that I reported the rest of the problems on. It simple obliges us not to use RAID Admin remotely (and conveniently) since all the remote machines are up to date with updates including QT.
Also note, it's impossible for RAID Admin to have a
leak. Java has a garbage collector. Therefore, if
    there's a leak, it's a JVM problem, and not a RAID
    Admin problem.
That line of argument would be correct if the leak was due to orphaned objects -- ie: objects no longer refered to and not garbage collected. There's nothing to stop a program in whatever language just consuming more and more memory because the programmer neglected to throw away unneeded objects.
However, since posting, the Array Conditioning operation has completed, and I've noticed that the memory eating behavior has stopped. I've posted a correction on this.
For #4 and #5, I'd suggest reading the Kbase article
which details the updates and what they're good for:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302780
Where on that page are you seeing info that addresses 4 and 5? This is in fact the one page I was refering to: it advertises the feature, but where are the docs?
I'd suggest you figure out what's wrong
    with your Java installation.
No reason to suspect Java on the server, where we are running RAID Admin.
I posted some command-line options which will
give diagnostic output in other threads,
... that could be useful, could you be more specific about where you posted them, and do they cover the result of Array Conditioning?
    Thanks again for your answers,
    Graham

  • XServe Raid won't mount after drive replacement

We had a drive go bad on an XServe Raid.  We replaced the drive.  It went through the rebuilding process. Now we can't mount the raid.  The verify in the disk utility is successful but it still won't mount.  What are we missing?

I have managed to fix the problem (at least it's still going at the moment...). We were just about to return the Fiber Card to Apple, but just before I removed the card from the G5 I had one last look at the settings on the RAID. Previously I had noticed that LUN Masking was on. I didn't take much notice of this before, as I read in an Apple manual somewhere that LUN Masking is always on while the Xserve is initializing the disks. As a last resort I thought to try and force LUN Masking to be disabled. I changed the array to JBOD, so the disks wouldn't be initialized, and entered the advanced settings. I then went to the LUN Masking section and turned off masking for both controllers. I then shut down the Xserve and unplugged it for 10 minutes.
I then turned on the Xserve and the G5 and to my utter delight, the G5 said "Unrecognized disk inserted"! The G5 was finally seeing the RAID.
I then formatted the RAID and everything has been fine since (4-5 hours).
I have no idea how LUN Masking turned on, the masking list had no devices in it, so the RAID was basically disallowing anyone access through fiber. Upon turning masking off, the RAID reappeared on the G5. Apple support said nothing about LUN Masking when I on the phone to them. I guess they though resetting the RAID controllers would reset the LUN Masking, but it doesn't seem to. I repeat: Resetting the RAID controllers does not reset LUN Masking.
All along this was the problem, but no-one at Apple or the reseller we purchased the Xserve RAID from thought of it!
I hope this helps someone out there.

  • External HDD (for Time Machine backup) detected but won't mount on desktop

I have been using this external HDD as my Time Machine backup for many months now. No desktop display settings have been changed (I checked), but now it won't mount on my desktop. I suspect one of my kids was banging around on the keyboard, as they have done in the past, and renamed it. Unfortunately it appears they renamed it to NULL this time around. I didn't think that was possible, but I've plugged it into 3 different Windows and iMac machines, and in all cases the external drive gets detected, but then in all cases it doesn't mount. The Volume Label does appear blank in the device properties.
Is there a way to access my drive again to rename it? Will that allow it to mount again? Or is there a way to access it to just reformat the whole darn thing?
    Thanks!
    Tom

I don't think it's possible to have a null name for a drive so i suspect there is a problem with it. open disk utility. does it show the name of the drive? try repairing it (repair disk not permissions). if that doesn't help you can always reformat it with Disk Utility. select the whole drive ( model, not name) and use the partition tab.

  • Filesystem won't mount in rc.sysinit

My RAID card won't mount with the other filesystems in rc.sysinit, it displays
mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist.
However, I took it out of fstab and added the line
    mount -t reiserfs /dev/sda1 /var/lib/mysql
to rc.multi, so it mounts the filesystem right before it starts the mysql daemon, and it works just fine.
Any ideas as to what would cause this?

    Hi Olaf,
No, it hasn't gone away. I only have those two iPod menu items: HDSpecs and HDSMARTData.
But I don't think there's anything wrong with the iPod; it works on other machines. And no other iOS devices will work on this Mac; I've tried an iPad and an iPhone. I spent 20 minutes on the Apple support chat yesterday. They suggested I zap the NVRAM and the SMC but I've tried both of those. They gave up after that and suggested it was something to do with the Mac's logic board or power management chip. But that doesn't explain why it works perfectly well with my Android phone and my Kindle.
