Warning: Subjective Question--MBP Zippier after SMC Update?

Anyone else notice this? My boot up and program loads seem zippier after applying the SMC update. Could be wishful thinking.
MBP 2.0, 2GB RAM, 100MB HD, 7200 RPM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

SMC stands for System Management Control. You can read what Apple wants you to know about it here
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303725
You can download the update here
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookprosmcfirmwareupdate.html
You can always look for updates by clicking on Software Update under the Apple Menu. Recent updates can also be found on Apples site under Support>Downloads.
The 17" MBP's do not require the firmware update, hence no listing in Software Update or Apple's Download section

  • MBP-retina performance after SMC update

Anyone notice a substantial increase in performance after the MacBook Pro Retina SMC update from a few days ago? (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1559)
Before, I would have audio glitching when playing iTunes match or spotify, or intermittent graphics issues. After update, no issues and performance is very fluid.
    Thanks!

That's the purpose of that SMC update. Just search in this forum and you will see the experience of more people (probably problems installing the update, but you should find some good experiences)

  • 2.2 GHz MBP hot as blazes after SMC update

I picked up my MPB from the couch today and had to swiftly set it down it was so hot. Now it is uncomfortable to rest on my legs. Before this I was always pleased at how cool it ran. Bad news.
    SMC Version (system): 1.16f11

I've done the SMC update and have experienced no issues.
    In a room that's currently at 54° F (12°C) my MBP's CPU temp is 113° F (45°C).
It's always good to use one's MBP on a cooling platform....I use this

  • Fan runs too fast after SMC update

About a week ago I updated the SMC of my Macbook 7.1 (mid 2010).
I even leaved it sometime  (days or weeks) on the list of software updates without installing, as it said I should not touch until it was done and it was to fix some compatibility with hardware that I don't have. So I did it at a time I would not do anything.
Since then, the fan began to work at full speed almost permanently, sometimes it slows down to normal operation (really normal, increase rotation when the device heats up, slow down to 2k rpm when it is cold).
I have formated the HD twice, because I tought that had done something wrong, but the problem persisted, so I used the hardware diagnostics and found two error numbers, one for the fast run:
    4SNS/1/40000001:TN1D - - 110.00
And another for the extensive test:
    4SNS/1/40000001:TN1D - - 1.000
I searched these numbers but the results are not good nor precise, peaple said it's related to thermal detector or the logic board permanently damaged.
My current SMC version (after the update) is 1.60f6
I don't know the old version of SMC.
I installed iStat PRO widget, from where I can see that all thermometers are operating normally (these must be the source of the control of the fan) and the fan running at 6,200 rpm.
I even tried to install Fan Control system pref component, but it can only increase the commanded speed of the fan at any time, never decrease.
I also tried to reset SMC as said in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 , sugested in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1306035
Is there a way to roll back to the old SMC version?
Or to install some program to overwrite the wrong control?
    Thank you.

you need to bring it to an Apple store or AASP to have it properly diagnosed.  Only Apple certified technicians have access to what those diagnostic codes mean.

  • MacBook won't reboot after SMC update

ok here's a weird one, anyone else have this problem? ran the SMC update on the MacBook, machine shut down like it's supposed to, but never restarted. if you attempt to restart it the machine just freezes at the blue screen.
machine is plugged into AC power.
    SMU reset.
    battery removed.
    any ideas?

Ill explain in detail what my therory is with the blue screen. The problem is 10.4.7 messed up how pram settings are saved on some macbooks and the pram also saves what system folder the computer loads by default and when the computer PRAM isent saved right the computer wont know what system folder to load thats why you get a weird blue screen when you try to boot, this is why zapping the pram will let you start up
another clue its a software issue is because the start up chime comes on which means the software has started to load and seeing as how the blue screen happens after the chime it must be a software issue, if it were to show up without the chime (like the colored vertical lines did in some macbooks my last one included) then it would most likely be a hardware issue
and also i called and talked to a MacBook product specialist for about an hour and he to came to the conclusion this was a software issue

  • MacBook Temperature Misreadings after SMC Update

Is it me or after installing the SMC update, the temperature readings are inaccurate. The temperature reading stays constant... and it reads irratically. Anyone else having temperature discrepencies?
        week 30

Is it me or after installing the SMC update, the
temperature readings are inaccurate. The temperature
reading stays constant... and it reads irratically.
It says the CPU is @ 70C but it certainly doesn't
feel proportionate to that...on the external case. If
it were 70C, the case would be scorching, but it's
    not...
The temperature read by the sensor is the CPU core(s) temperature and not the case temperature. This temperature is then dissipated (through the heatsink) and so it's perfectly logical that the temperature of the external case is far lower temperature.

  • 2GHz Macbook - no issues after SMC Update!

I purchased my Macbook on Friday and immediatley updated the firmware, as well as all other updates. I installed bootcamp and successfully installed Windows XP. I have used it non-stop all weekend without issue. All morning I have been ripping DVD's with Handbrake and Temperature Monitor reports CPU at 35 degrees and holding steady. I have read many posts here in the discussion boards concerning several issues related to the SMC update and rebooting issues. I have had no such issue. I did notice that my SMC firmware was already at version 1.4f8 out of the box. I wonder if the booting and heat issues are related to earlier versions of the logic board.
I do have several observations related to my new Macbook after considerable use for 3 days:
    1. I do hear the CPU fan kick in when I am ripping DVD's. It is not, however, so loud as to annoy me. On any other occassion doing regular stuff I do not hear the fan at all.
    2. The heat coming off the bottom left back corner is VERY hot. I am not able to lay the notebook on my lap with any degree of comfort at all. I see now why Apple says that it is a notebook as opposed to a laptop
    3. My new Macbook rips DVD's just as fast as my dual core AMD Windows mcachine using Handbrake. I built my own Windows machine with a dual core AMD 4200 with 2 Western Digital Raptor HDD in RAID 0 and cannot rip DVD's faster than my Macbook! - This surprised me to no end.
I am very happy with my purchase. I thought that I would kick myself for paying the premium price for the black finish, however, now that I have it home I can honestly say that it is worth the extra $150. It is such a beautiful piece of technology. I do plan on adding 2gig of RAM from New Egg and probably will install a 7200rpm HDD at some point.
Thanks to all the people in the Apple community who help Windows people like myself make the transition!

Excellent news about your experience. Especially from someone who (apparantly) switched from WIN. I found the MacBook to be a tad bit slower than I thought it would be. However, still am very pleased except for the fact there is no PC Card slot.
Just so you know, the Firmware update is designed to upgrade from version 1.4f8 to 1.4f10 according to Apple: "After this update has completed successfully, your SMC Version will be: 1.4f10." Check out the site. Although, maybe you don't need to update. I did and found an improvement. My Macbook is week 24

  • Intel imac - ethernet not working after SMC update

    Hi All,
New intel 17" iMac - out of the box works fine using PPPoe, I do and SMC update, and now the connection drops. Its not my ISP, because it works fine on my powerbook, and desktop PC.
I tried reseting the SMC, but when I start the imac the fans kick in and don't stop, and the ethernet still doesn't work.
    Any suggestions?
    Intel iMac 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm experiencing the exact same problem. I just got my 20" Interl iMac back from the apple Store today (took it in for service Sunday because it started getting fatal kernel panics like crazy over the weekend.) They replace the logic board and tonight was the first time I had started it up since Saturday. Immediately got the update window, downloaded the firmware update then BAM... internet connection gone down the drain. The iMac is literally less than 5 feet from our wireless router and the signal strenght is dropping to 1 bar regularly (sometimes losing connection altogether.) This was never an issue before tonight. I've had the iMac since April and it has always maintained a rock-solid connection. In addition, just to rule out the problem being the router, I have a Compaq laptop sitting on the same desk as the iMac and it's wireless connection is over 90%, and my wife is surfing the internet just fine with the Mac mini on the other desk. This is definitely an issue!

  • Abnormal heating after SMC update 1.8

    Hey guys,
yesterday I upgraded SMC firmware to version 1.8, but since then my Macbook Air never gets under 50 C. I was used for temperatures around 39 C when running only internet webpages, or viewing PDFs, but now I hardly get close to 50 C when doing the same. When I`m watching videos on Youtube, I now reach temperatures around 80 degrees:-/
I`m using smcFancontrol to check the temperature.
Do you have any idea why is it so and how to correct it? Thanks a lot!

Problem solved: After updating my time capsule to form 7.6.3 to 7.6.4 the problem is solved.

  • Weird color profile problem after SMC update

Although I've managed to resolve this particular problem, I wonder if anyone has suffered the same thing.
Software update says that I should do the firmware update, so I did that yesterday night. Also, at the same time, I went and removed MS Office 2004 Test Drive (it was taking up space for no good reason). Sometime after doing those things, it seems like OSX had lost the display color profile. The only ones I've got was the Adobe one, Generic RGB and sRGB. The generic RGB washes the screen with a blue tone, and clicking on Calibration would merely have the ColorSync utility complain about the profile isn't there.
Looking at the knowledge base, it says that after the 10.4.8 upgrade, the screen may look bluer than before. The curious thing was that my Macbook reported it running on 10.4.8 when I first got it. But anyways I downloaded 10.4.7's LCD profile, and put it at the location specified in that knowledge base. Display preference still didn't pick up on the profile, so I end up restarting the machine, and now it seems to be using a profile called "Color LCD".
I'm wondering if anyone else have experienced something like this, and going to document this here as a possible solution if someone is lost after a random deletion of a color profile....
    Macbook 13"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I had something similar happen when I upgraded to 10.4.8. In fixing the blue tint problem, I loaded a backup copy of the Color LCD profile. Subsequently, under exact circumstances I don't remember, the machine "lost" the profile. And the calibration option would just give an error.
So somehow, after further fiddling, I ended up with two copies of Color LCD profile, one the old 10.4.7 one, one the 10.4.8 one. I haven't had the problem of it losing the profile again.
But I might mention that there is a related problem which you may encounter. If I use fast user switching with another account and return to my (admin) account, the blue tint returns. The workaround is as described in this article:
    http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macosxhints/2006/02/fuscolor/index.php
I have created an alias to the DMProxy application as described in the above article, and have to run it after every time I use fast user switching.

  • MBP died after security update

I had a couple applications crash and was going to reboot, and saw that there was a security update so went ahead with that. After restart, there was no chime. The screen is staying black. Hard drive sounds like it is spinning but not being accessed. Light on latch is glowing but that's about it. Tried removing the battery and restarting, probably out of nostalgia for my Powerbook 520. Multiple power offs/ons produce same result, i.e., nothing. Any suggestions before I head to the Genius Bar?

Do you have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video chip? If so, you could have this problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
The Genius bar can run a specific test for the NVIDIA problem and if you have it, the repair will be free.
    Good luck!

At my computer, there was a problem with the configuration file of pacman (/etc/pacman.conf). Do something with pacman in the terminal, and see if there is an warning message of pacman. After I updated the configuration file, the problem with Apper was gone.
When solved, please change the subject with [SOLVED].

  • MBP after waking from sleep problem + new SMC update temperature

    Hi there!
    I have two issues:
    1. When I wanted to wake my MBP from sleep it asked me to enter the password and then all the screen went black. I could move my mouse cursor and chance sound volume but whichever key I pushed I had my screen "flashing" (like the option, flash when error or sth like that), any ideas what can cause this problem?
    2. Yesterday I installed new SMC update. Befere doing so my MBP was terribly hot, especially on the top bar near f keys, but the coreduotemp showed 45C, after installing SMC update it's all the time 65, which is exactly opposite to what people say here.
    Thanx
