Warning SUID file modified after verify disc permissions 10.6.8 - what to do ?

hi
II have had a super slow computer for about 2 weeks mac book pro / 10.6.8
the rainbow wheel is  turning a lot [  even internet  is slow - but speed check says it isn't ]
I moved things off it to make more space
now  499.76 gb / 28.92 gb free
I do a lot f wrintg and images and think I have a lot of files:
Number of Folders :
213,675
Number of Files :
795,199
I just ran Verify permissions  in Disc utilities and  this was  one result listed [ amidst other permissions found awry  I've said 'repair' to - undertaking those now ] :
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
what does this mean = what should I do
* I am barely computer literate  [its workings-wise]...
and too scared to put in the original disc etc.
Also  I just read this on the forum:
....."OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.)"

Re: Mac running very Slow and Hot
Sep 2, 2012 1:15 PM (in response to mvcola)
If you don't have any processes consuming a lot of CPU time, then the computer shouldn't be running hot.
and wondering if no sleep has cuased this - because sometime this year I did change to no sleep to sleep after an hour [I think] which I thought would make computer wear less/ last longer   - should I go back to  "no sleep"  ?
thanks for any advice about smooth operation  checkups etc for non computer savvy type  who doesn't want to lose or wreck anything !
Julie

You can ignore that message.
As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' (when you repair the disk, not just verify it) then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:

  • Warning: SUID file - modified and NOT repaired???

I've run monthly batch tasks recently and received the following error for about 10 files:
Warning:SUID file "file name here" has been modified and will not be repaired
Anyone know what this means??? What it impacts? Should I be concerned? Do I need to have this addressed?
My MacBook is running fine by all appearances, but I wanted to check if anyone knows anything as I will be taking classes online soon and don't want it to fail on me if this is a problem that needs fixed ASAP.
    Thanks!

I was given a link by a moderator to part of Apple site listing errors that you can safely ignore. Very helpful - relieved my concern.

  • During a routine verify permissions using my disc utility, I'm getting a WARNING: SUID file "Systems/Library/CoreService-.ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

During a routine verify permissions using my disc utility, I'm getting a WARNING: SUID file "Systems/Library/CoreService….ent" has been modified and will not be repaired. What does this mean?? I'm not awawre that I did anything to cause this and is it somethingI should try to fix?

    1. It means that the current software is installed.
    2. It's not something you should try to fix.
    3. Verifying and repairing permissions shouldn't be done as routine tasks.

    I am running 10.9.1 software
    Help Diggs1936

    I would try reinstalling.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:

    Doug,
According to Apple, Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore.

  • When I run disk utility, verify permissions I get "WARNING SUID file system/Library/Coreservices/Remotemanagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAge nt has been modified

Please read Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore.

  • After updating to Mavericks, get this during Permissions Repair: Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired"?

Repaired permissions once, got rid of the the previous iTunes errors. Cleared history and repaired again, still get:
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Any ideas?

I have just started seeing this message and, almost simultaneously, have started to have problems with various different apps crashing for no real reason. Just a coincidence?
For interest, SketchUp crashed with the message
    "Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x00000000f7f7fff9"
    and QuarkXpress with the message
    "Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000"
Am I just punching at shadows or could these be linked?
Hope someone can put my mind at rest.
    Cheers....Scotty

  • Warning:  SUID File (11 Files) and "Permissions Differ" - No Install Disc

    Hello,
Have had my black macbook for about 3 1/2 years now (leopard) and having problems with it being really sluggish and freezing up. Additionally, the fan is coming on a lot and being really loud. I have checked activity monitor (all processes) and nothing is running over 12...Question is are the "warning suid files" and "permissions differ" the source of these problems? I can't find my original install disc (have one for my i mac but no good I hear.) Guessing I need to go to the genius bar to fix this issue...Thanks, PoorGradStudent

Hello and welcome to the discussions, Those warning are normal and nothing to worry about.
While your at the genius bar see if they will run a diagnostics test on your laptop. Note, if your problems only show up after it has been on for an hour, get there an hour early and warm it up.
No use in have them look at it if you can't replicate the problem.
    Cheers,
    Glynn

  • HT2963 When I repair permissions, get one reading that can't be repaired.  "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."  What does this mean?

When I repair permissions in disk untilities, I get one result that cannot be repaired:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I recently had a new hard drive installed by Apple, after mine failed.  The permissions seem to get out of whack quite often, and I get the message above.
Can you please tell me what may be going on?

    See this Apple Discussion https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5785712

  • What does the message "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired" when repairing disk permissions?

What does the message "Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired" when repairing disk permissions?

It's just a status message, albeit a misleading one, and can be ignored.

  • After Repairing Permissions, "Warning: SUID file. . ."  So, is it a concern

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I don't what this means, nor even where to begin to find out. Thoughts.

Hi VALman, a list of repairable items are gone indeed. I used the OS on OCZ-V30GbSSD and the Home Folder from WD-1TbBC before by Leopard with this message then I login to a Guest Account change the Home Folder back to my OS drive with new UUID as well. Then fast user switching OK, new Finder window, run Maintenance software, shut down. Turn on, rename as previous and change back the Home Folder to the WD-Caviar. All this happened when I renamed the drive by adding new icon&name for "fun".
So I don't know if your system description is up to date, mine is Octo- Nehalem.
