WARNING: TimeMachine can unexpectedly delete all its backups!!!
I'm running 10.5.2 and for some reason TimeMachine didn't consolidate all of the previous hourly backups. So I went into TimeMachine, selected the backup folder for the particuar date and time and chose the atomator function to delete this backup -> as a consequence all of the backups got deleted!!!
I don't know whether this only happens in a Non-English environment (I did it from within a Swiss-German account). But this seems to be huge bug. Anyone else made similar experience? Of course I don't have a backup of my TimeMachine backup

Are you talking about Time Machine backups on a Time Capsule?
It is fine to delete the backup as long as you are sure there is nothing you want.. and do a new clean backup. That will be the least possible space usage for a working backup.. Never delete files out of an existing backup.. it is very hard to manually delete files in the backup.
We do not recommend it. -

Doesn't sound like much of a backup plan, but why not just wipe your backup drive and make a fresh backup of your current system? Be easier and safer,

Time Machine asked to delete all my backups
Periodically, time machine tells me it's going to delete all my backups and create a new one. There is no way out of it. All I can say is "OK". But I'm wondering "Why?". Why is it doing that? Months of backup are gone with a single click.
When my backup drive gets full, it warns me that it is going to delete my oldest backups. That's okay. That's expected. But twice now it has told me that it is going to delete my entire backup set and start over. Why? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening.

Hi,
after insalling Lion (10.7.3), it made a backup on time machine (approx 20 GB) and all went fine.
Next backup, I noticed the message "deleting old backups" (or something like this). I though it was just some clean up after the installation... taking too much actually, a bit suspicious...
So I was *horrified* when I discovered that Lion was actually deleting ALL previous backups, (say a couple of years history).
I stopped in in time do save just the last month
I am incredibly disappointed ! Why in the world that could happen ??? Now I lost all my hystory.
The only option I have is to try some disk recovery option, but I am sure that even if I find the old file it could be impossible to restore them in the time machine backups history, which I understand is rather complex and impossible to fix "by hand" , isn't it ?
Anyone has had such dramatic experience? Any hint on how I can solve it ?

installed 10.7.2
time machine backup OK
migrated form mobile me to icluod (apparently ok)
icloud not present on preferences pane (mistery)
update to 10.7.3 --> installation stuck and MBP lost
recovered 10.7.2 from time machine
update to 10.7.3, this time OK (with icloud preference pane correctly in his place)

I do not remember exactly how much disk space was left, but probably not much enough to contain a whole snapshot but surely far from "nearly full" (roughly, say 150 GB free on TM disk, and 200 of data in the MBP disk?)
So, removing SOME of the earliest backups would have left enough space... not ALL of them
Anyway, (assuming this is the expalnation) I would have apreciated being asked for an authorization, or at least a warning message (something like http://pondini.org/TM/C4.html, but before deleting !)
Well thank you all for your comments, I guess I'll just have to live with it
One last thought: any hope to recover old backups and copy them to a backup backup-disk?

I have just experienced a nightmare. If anyone can help I would be in your debt.
Here we go...
I was trying to move the backup of old computer ( partition A ) to a new partition ( B ) on same ext. hard drive. Not enough space in partition b so I looked into deleting some old backups before copying A to B using restore in disc utility.
Inside time machine I was using the cog thing to select delete backup... selected the oldest backup, thinking this would delete only the oldest backup.
It deleted ALL the backups on A, including the latest.
This had work files on it that are important so it's a bit of a disaster. I have had a great backup stradegy for the last 15 years and have NEVER before lost anything. Here is my details...
Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz
10.7.5
External drive 4 partitions
Partition A was backed up using 10.6
From a G5 which I deleted the files from.
I am hoping the files could be recovred from either the G5 or the hard drive or my trash on the macbook pro?
I have and will not do too much on my computer like disc utility stuff or empty trash etc.
It's a long shot, but anyone have any ideas..?

Ok. It's just that I've never heard of it erasing more than what was selected.
It's possible something went wrong, and at least some of the other backups are still there. Especially if no other changes have been made to the TM drive, you might try running Repair Disk on it with Disk Utility. Unlikely to help, but it's worth a try.
The G5. I erased the drive using disk utility and haven't used it since. There is 2 drives on that machine, the drive we are talking about is not bootable it's just storage.
Since you already have it, you might want to try running the File Salvage app on it (you'll probably need another HD, or at least partition, to receive whatever it finds). The results might be more usable than the results from the TM drive, since they're "ordinary" files and folders, not all the "hard links" Time Machine uses.
EDIT:
I had the ext drive hanging off my Mac Book pro 10.7. Ext drive had TM backups of 2 laptops and G5.
Hold on a minute -- how were all those backups made -- by connecting the drive directly to each Mac, or were any made over a network (wired or wireless)? Are they / were they all in the same partition, or separate ones?

HT3275 My Time Machine deletes ALL previous backups
Every so often, Time Machine deletes ALL previous backups and starts over from scratch. It has done this several times in the last year. I have not changed any hardware or the name of the computer. Why is this happening? Makes me very concerned that I now have NO backups while it chugs away rebuilding a 210 GB backup.

i want to erase all iphone bookmarks because when i sync my iphone to my pc using itunes it causes a huge waste of time for me as i also use xmarks the firefox and internet explorer browser addon, basically the thousands of bookmarks i have get in a right mess ( yes i know i have loads of bookmarks its because i blog about websites so ive now made maybe 100 plus folders in my bookmarks to put sites into categories now) but these folders get dulicated but most with nothing in them, also many new sites ive bookmarked on my iphone then get put alphabetically on my pc browsers so i spend hours dragging them into the correct folders....please help can we erase all iphone bookmarks in 1 go? if so how? if i can do this id then sort all my firefox bookmarks and use xmarks to sync them to ie8 (internet explorer8) browser then id like to plug my bookmarkless iphone into the pc so when it syncs with ie8 it should get all the newly sorted out nicely categorised bookmark folders ive spent days sorting out ! please help thanks. also is there a way to bookmark a site on the iphone and select which folder to save it in just like if i did it using firefox ?I should think that if you remove the checkmark for syncing bookmarks to the phone and then do a sync, they would be removed from the iPhone. Can't guarantee that, as I'm not in a position to try it.
As far as adding a bookmark on the iPhone: when you are at the site, touch the "+" sign at the bottom of the page. Select Add Bookmark. When the Add Bookmark screen comes up, just above the keyboard, there is a selection that should start out as bookmarks, and there is an arrowhead beside it. Touch that and it will bring up all of your bookmarks and folders. Select the folder and save it. -

My iPod is not synced to my itunes or laptop, so I just manually put it on.

ThanksAn iPod has a hard drive inside. Like a hard drive in a computer, it can have data corruption that cause files to be lost. It is really not wise to keep music and other media on the iPod without it being backed up on the computer. You can easily break or lose your iPod, or the iPod could have data issues like the one your experienced.
The cause may be a hardware problem. It can also be data only, which means using Restore on your iPod may make it work properly again. The only way to know is to use iTunes to Restore the iPod, which will erase the iPod and initialize the iPod's software.
Going forward, you should store your media on your computer and sync it to the iPod. Additionally, you should back up the valuable data (and not just iTunes data) on your computer. -

I would strongly advise you not to let it sit in the Inbox.
When you see this happening, try right-click on the affected folder, select '''Properties''' then '''Repair Folder'''.
Large folders (actually, a folder in Thunderbird is stored as a file, so it is sensitive to file size limits set by the underlying file system) can be problematic. This is one reason not to let messages collect in one folder. I use Thunderbird's Archive folders so that accumulated mails over several years can happily coexist because they are effectively stored in many small folders. No single mail store folder then exceeds the 2GB or 4GB sizes that have been known to stress the OS. I appreciate that current builds of Thunderbird and a modern 64-bit OS should be able to cope, but practically I find it slows down when given huge files, so I err towards a pragmatic solution; a large number of not very big files.
Archives are searchable, and a Saved Search folder can give you a virtual composite folder allowing access to the entire Archive. -
