Warning: Upcoming dbus upgrade will kill outdated gnome sessions

We're planning to upgrade dbus to 1.0.x in a short while. The new configuration files used by dbus 1.0.x is incompatible with the version in our repositories, which causes dbus to crash as soon as it tries to reload the configuration.
Due to a bug in gnome-session and the XFCE Terminal program, these programs will crash together with dbus. This bug has been fixed on Januari 23 in both gnome-session and Terminal.
When upgrading your system to dbus 1.0.x from either XFCE Terminal or Gnome with the affected packages dated before Januari 23rd, be warned that you will lose all unsaved work affected by these crashes (gnome-session drops to the console and hard-quits all your active programs, Terminal only kills all active Terminal sessions). A solution is to upgrade from outside of these programs, or, to upgrade to the latest versions of these packages, restarting these programs and then upgrade dbus.

Hi there,
I just did the upgrade to dbus-1.0.2-2 from a gnome terminal and although my system was up to date as of 12 hours ago I still found that the desktop and everything on it died.

  • Upgrading from FMS_4_5_0_r297 to FMS_4_5_1_r484 using ffmpeg will kill recording append ability

I would like to warn anyone using ffmpeg that upgrading to FMS_4_5_1_r484 will kill your append recording.
As discussed in http://forums.adobe.com/message/4280166 even fmle encoders are having problems appending recordings with absolute time enabled.
Reseting the recording with this query "adbe-live-event=croaporter&adbe-record-mode=record" or a change in your main.asc might be a solution for some but this will cause a disruption for clients connected to the stream.
For myself and I'm sure many others this is not a solution it seems like a bug. We need a solution that does not require a client to reset their browser page or client application which means overall disruptions in the viewer experience.
I can vouch that in FMS_4_5_0_r297 appending to a recording was done seemlessly on  a 24/7 stream (and i have over 30 streams running). Sometimes for some reason an encoder will attempt to republish or will require a flush (forced restart) and with FMS_4_5_1_r484 this is not possible. Yes you can start a new recording but what happened to appending the recording, it was working.
I have tried to insert into the Event.xml a maxrestartage and removed absolute time code from Application but it will not work.
I dont know if FFmpeg has absolute time code implemented in the librtmp libraries to emulate fmle time synchronisation but even fmle users have this problem so I believe that this should be fixed in the next upgrade but for now I suggest all others who want to use a more efficient encoder such as ffmpeg as compared to fmle to be very careful when upgrading.
I did notice some new hls buffering issues that have arised from this new upgrade as well which 4.5.0 didnt have.
I am even willing to pay for support to solve this problem because 4.5.1 seems to have better monitoring in the administration console. But for now I am downgrading to FMS_4_5_0_r297 because it works.

    Bashir

  • Last console kit package upgrade broke permissons in Gnome

Today, after upgrade and reboot I wasn't able to use network manager connections nor shutdown the system as regular user in Gnome. I linked the problem with console kit which was upgraded to 0.4.3. Logging in to Gnome as root, gave me full permission, of course. Downgrading to version 0.4.1 fixed the problem.
Anyone had similiar issues with console kit?
    update:
since 31.01.2011 update for slim to ver. 1.3.2-3 it's workin (at leas for me)
I reopened the topic as requested by some users.
Moderator edit: there's no use in using all kind of custom flags, just remove [Solved] if you reopened the topic, don't start putting in stuff like [Reopened] or [Not fixed], that's not helping anyone. Thank you.

I have to say nothing what was posted help me with mounting usb pendrives
When i upgraded system mounting external volumes stopped to work, pendrive is showing in side panel in pcmanfm but there also pop ups dialog window with "Authentication is required" text
I have compiz standalone with pcmanfm, I don't use hal, dbus is in daemons array in rc.conf, udev and udisks installed
I log in by startx, my .xinitrc looks like this
    #!/bin/sh
    # launch the window manager
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session start-fusion.sh
    if which dbus-launch >/dev/null && test -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS"; then
    eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"
    fi
    start-fusion.sh consist of
    #!/bin/bash
    emerald &
    nitrogen --restore &
    setxkbmap pl &
    #udiskie &
    tint2 &
    wicd-gtk &
    volwheel &
    exec compiz ccp --replace --indirect-rendering
I was using udiskie later to mount pendrive but it stopped to work for me also after last upgrade.
Downgrade any of packages (consolekit, udev, udisks) doesn't work too.
Maybe someone have an idea what to do to make it work like before.
PS I read all topics from last few days but there is no tip working in my situation.

  • Will killing pacman have any side effects?

Hi recently while doing an upgrade with pacman, the download of a package will stop and I will not get any feedback anymore. So I leave it for a few hours but nothing happens so I decided to ^C which I know will kill pacman. What bad side effects should I expect from doing this? and is anyone else having a similar problem with pacman?

Maybe pacman should be modified to support an option (for pacman.conf) that causes pacman to log a TON of debug info to eg /var/log/pacman-debug.log, and those that experience the issue can try the setting out. And by "ton" I mean... every 2nd line in pacman being a debug_print() call (or whatever)
Just an idea. I like ideas.
You mean like pacman --debug ?
To moljac024 : At which step does pacman stop responding? During download? You might have some network issues, unrelated to pacman.
At least, I don't experience anything similar, and I am sure many other users as well.
Yes, it just hangs during download. And at random times. And no, it's no network issue because as soon as I restart it, it continues downloading. A couple of times I've left my laptop downloading updates and went away doing other things only to return an hour or two later and see that it stopped 5 minutes after it started and had been hanging the whole time.
Should I just run pacman with --debug always ? I guess I could do that.

  • (gnome-session:4336): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display.

I'm having troble getting gnome running on my system.
    When I'm running gnome-session Im getting (gnome-session:4336): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display.
The exact same setup will allow me to run xfce4 without any problem.
I did manage to start gnome once with gdm, but then nothing but rightclick on the mouse and the desktop icons would work, and after that one time both gdm and gnome wont work.
I just did a base install of arch 0.7, xorg, gnome, nvidia and sound drivers.
Also, if I put exec gnome-session in my .xinitrc file I get a Fatal server error: Requested entity already in use.

the .xinitrc it is executed by the X window system after the X Server is started
if you run gnome-session from a console shell and there is no X server started, it cannot open the display...
the X server is normally started during "startx" or "xinit"

No, I do not mean just the music.  Copying just the media/music files or the media folder creates problems.

Also, I have the 08 version of iWork. Will this cause problems for the update?  Can I update this AFTER I update the processor?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There's no reason to think that Mountain Lion will slow down your Mac. Just make a backup of your data before upgrading with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Also, check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com Upgrade them to a compatible version or delete them before upgrading.
The external drive won't make the OS X Mountain Lion installer fail, but it's better to unplug it during the upgrade.
iWork '08 is compatible with Mountain Lion. iWork '09 includes OS X Mountain Lion features and can be purchased at the Mac App Store.
To upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend at least 4 GB of RAM. You can check how much memory you have in Apple menu > About this Mac

This happens only *during* the connection, which means that before and after it's fine.
It looks like some icon is missing but I don't know how to find which one..
i'm using last cinnamon and faenza icon's

Looks like your theme is missing the files nm-vpn-connecting[01-11].png (usually located in /usr/share/icons/[theme]/[size]/status or the like).
If another theme on your machine ships those icons, you could try to copy them to your preferred theme's folder, and see if the error goes away (however they probably won't fit with your theme).

  • Adobe Flash Upgrade will not install after Firefox upgrade to 3.6.7

I upgraded to Firefox 3.6.7. After the upgrade I got a message that I needed to upgrade Adobe Flash due to security vulnerabilities. The Flash upgrade will not install. It simply sits and never installs no matter how long I wait.
    == This happened ==
    Just once or twice

Thanks for your response. I have previously reviewed this. The only potential problem it seems to resolve is having 2 versions of Shockwave installed. I only have one. The only thing I can think of to do is just uninstall the one version and see if it will trigger an installation. When I go to the Flash install site, I agree to the terms and get the next screen that says download will start. I never get a message asking if it's ok to run or anything. No matter where I look for a download for Flash I wind up at the same place with the same problem. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Thanks
