WARNING: Updating or restoring your iPhone may brick it

There is a problem with the Apple iTunes store and it is bricking iPhones when you attempt to upgrade or restore them. You will get a 11222 error and the phone will be useless. This seems to be more related to older models but the genius bar people are still clueless. They told me I had to buy a new phone!!! Apple does not seem to know how to fix this. There are a number of threads on this but I would proceed with caution before doing any upgrade or restore until Apple addresses this problem.

Using the absolute latest version. In fact the problem seems related to the newer version and whatever is going on at the iTunes store.
