Warped 1st Gen MBA body (possibly) due battery expansion

Hi friends,
I got back from a three-week trip to find my 1st Generation Macbook Air lid ajar. I thought this was quite strange as I live alone and no one would have had access to my computer. On trying to shut the lid, I found that it wouldn't close cos there was an obvious bulge in the middle of the body half of the laptop that didn't left the lid shut.
On reading up on the Net, I've found that this is possibly due to battery expansion. I was hoping that I might get some answers and opinions on the following:
1. How does this happen/occur, especially considering since the laptop wasn't connected to a charger at the time (it was on a different floor/level altogether)?
2. How dangerous is phenomenon?
3. Was there a possible chance of the battery exploding?
4. Should I be concerned about using this laptop now; are there any dangers?
5. Does this constitute as a product (serious) defect?
6. What is the likelihood of the internal components affected by this expansion (and extra heat, I would imagine)?
7. The product is no longer under warranty, but IF it is a serious product defect, what would Apple do to rectify the problem?
Thanks heaps,
M.

Personally I would take it to the apple store and see if they can at least diagnose it. I would guess if the battery exploded/expanded it is most certainly dangerous to operate.

  • Can the 1st gen MBA's hard drive be replaced?

I have been reading lots about the SSD's on the MacBook Pro's. I own a 1st gen MBA equipped with a SATA drive. My question is: Can the HD be switched out to a SSD? and if so, will Apple do it or does one have to resort to a third party? Just curious, thanks

After reading this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10630288 and the Macworld review of the Runcore SSD here: http://www.macworld.com/article/145112/2009/12/runcoressdupgrade.html I took the plunge and bought the Runcore for $415. I think the Macworld review was right that the MBA 1st Generation is about 30% faster with the SSD replacing the PATA drive. I've got an extra 40GB of space as well.
The Runcore package has everything you need to do the swap. New SSD, an empty case with either PATA ZIF or SATA II LIF interface. It even has a screwdriver. You swap the drives and run Carbon Copy Cloner and you are back in business.
I bought my SSD here: http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=80000AE0-1247088390
    Hope this helps!

  • 1st Gen MBA and Lion. Will the MBA live?

Will my 1st Gen MBA bought in 2008 (1,6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB, 667 MHz, DDR2 SDRAM)work well on Lion? What limitations will there be? Can I add memory or speed to this model? Thank-you any info and guidance.
    Magz

    From here:
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will require an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (or better, such as the i3/5/7 series or Xeon chips) and 2 GB of RAM for a compliant install when it ships this summer....there is a good bit of confusion over the difference between "Core 2 Duo" (which is supported) and "Core Duo" (which is not). Here's the simple rule: Did you purchase your Mac (new) after December 2006? It's probably OK for Lion, although it might need more RAM.
So, in answer to the first part of your question, you will be fine as is for Lion. As for the second part, yes, you should be able to upgrade your 1st Gen Air. Current models can't be upgraded, but earlier models can be. So you might want to think about bumping up that RAM.

  • Safari 5.1.2 Unusable on 1st Gen MBA

After upgrading, Safari has become impossible to use. Spinning rainbow wheel and intolerably long page loading times... When Safari is running, the whole OS becomes sluggish and sometimes locks up for minutes at a time.
    Restarted Safari.
    Ran Disk Permissions.
    Rebooted Computer.
    Ran Software Update.
Turned off extensions (only running one).
    Deleted the extension.
    Installed latest Java.
    Installed latest Flash.
Installed ClickToPlugin to avoid running Flash, Silverlight or Shockwave.
Safari 5.1.2 runs perfectly fine on my new 27" iMac running Lion.
It also runs perfectly well on a Guest account on my 1st Gen MacBook Air.
    What am I missing here?

    Hi Sky....
Spinning rainbow wheel and intolerably long page loading times..
Try disabling the Lion "resume" feature.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:   Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
Now from the Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
And back to the menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes then click Reset.
If nothing above helped. go to Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
Deselect:  Enable plug-ins. Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that made a difference then you have one or more Safari add ons causing the problem.
Troubleshooting help here > Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Keep in mind, third party Safari plugins do not apply to extensions.
And try troubleshooting the Safari preference file (.plist)
    Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. If that made a difference, move that .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.

  • MBA 1st Gen and Lion Performance

    Hi,
Does anyone have experience on updating 1st Gen MBA to OSX Lion? How is performance feeling and memory consuption?
Mine have almoust 300mb RAM left and with Lion this should be worst. Correct?
    Cheers, Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I recommend you to keep Snow Leopard, because if Snow Leopard consumes most of the RAM, Lion will consume more memory. Also, note that your MacBook Air has got soldered RAM, so it's impossible to increase RAM

  • Replacing 1st Gen dock connector with 3rd Gen dock connector?

The dock connector on my 1st Gen iPod Touch has stopped working, and i have an old 3rd Gen iPod Touch lying around that appears to be broken beyond repair. Provided that a simple cleaning will not clear up the problem, will swapping the 3rd Gen's dock connector for the 1st Gen's be possible?
Since the male end of the cord is universal throughout models, i am assuming that the only problem might be to get the thing to fit.
But if any other potential problems may exist it would be helpful to know about them, before i take this thing apart.
I don't intend on spending any money on this iPod, as i am getting an iPhone as soon as possible. This is simply meant to be a temporary fix since i have no other portable music player at the moment.

The screws appear to be in the same place however, and the 3rd gen metal housing appears more compact than the 1st gen housing.
So there may be a spacing issue if you are trying to put the 1st gen into the 3rd gen, but not the other way around.
A potenial problem would be with the connections to the logic board. It would be helpful if anyone knows the specifics. Maybe i'll look up the company etched into the housing.
Thanks for the links by the way, they look useful if i it ends up working.
Edit: Actually, i have no clue what is holding the 1st gen's connector on. In the place of screws it appears they have some sort of pins. That may prove to be an issue

Yes, your original USB cord will work perfectly. I treasure my 1st-Gen Shuffle cord, because it has a much easier-to-grip dock connector than the new ones.

  • How much does it cost to replace 1st gen ipod battery

Was just wondering if it is actually worth replacing the battery on an ipod touch 1st gen (due to cost) or just get a more up to date model ? Does anyone know how much apple charge for this service ?
    Thanks

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one with a new battery for $79. They do not fix yours. I would say not worth it

I have a 1st Gen, MacBook Pro from 2006. For the last few years I've had to us my power adaptor as my battery no longer works, and shuts down after 30 seconds it. Now my power adaptor looks like it's coming to an end. Even though it's securely fitted, it often switches off.
I am planning on buying a new MacBook Pro later this year, but for the meantime I'm not sure if I should buy a new power adaptor, or if this is a problem with my MacBook Pro. Also does anyone know where I can buy a battery in the UK for 1st Gen MacBook Pro.

OWC has batteries for 1,1 generation MacBook Pros and they ship internationally - http://eshop.macsales.com/.
Your best bet for a power adapter is to get one from Apple. Third-party adapters just don't seem to be reliable (or safe). You can also buy a replacement battery directly from Apple, of course, but they're a bit more expensive.
    Good luck,

  • Suggestions for new battery replacement for 1st gen Ipod?

    Hello all,
I recently acquired my brother's 1st gen Ipod mini. I love the thing. As with others, I think I'm having troubles with battery life. I have played songs on it for around 2 hours today. At 1.5 hours of playtime, the battery life indicator was nearly empty (NOTE: I have read this article: http://www.vsa.cape.com/~danh/ipod.htm and I understand the "lying" battery life indicator). A half hour after this, the unit shut itself off: the battery's charge had been depleted.
I have been looking at ebay and there is one company selling a battery for under 10 dollars with shipping. They seem to be fairly reputable, claiming to be a top supplier of Ipod products and that the batteries it sells are superior to the ones that originally came with the 1st gen mini Ipods. They claim the batteries they are selling are " Internal Li-Polymer Apple Mini iPod Battery
    - 600 mAh (High Capacity)
    - 3.7 V "
I have ALSO seen a replacement battery for the Ipod mini claiming the following:
    " Voltage: 3.7V 550mAh "
    Yet another claims:
...our battery which is made and tested to the highest international standard gives you a capacity of 650 mAh which is 50% more than the original Apple battery. The original Apple iPod part number is EC003. This is a brand new high-quality generic (non-OEM) battery."
My question is has anyone replaced the battery on their 1st gen mini Ipod? What voltage and mAh readings should I get for the battery I buy?
    -Phillip

Anyone correct me if i'm wrong here but AFAIK:
Ok, the main thing to look for is the 3.7v rating. the mAh refers to milli-Amp hours, i.e. the amount of charge the battery can hold, not the current it outputs.
As long as it's 3.7v, it's cool. And the bigger the mAh, the better.
    Good luck in your replacement.

Is it possible to replace the internal wifi antenna in a itouch 1st gen with a much stronger internal wifi antenna from a slightly newer model, such as a 2nd or 3rd generation itouch?

That is not very likely as the antennae are different physical designs and fit will be an issue.
