Warped, bend, crooked Macbook Pro 15" unibody

After a couple of days with my new Macbook PRo 15" Unibody, I noticed the machine is crooked and the plastic stands underneath doesn't all touch the table, or whatever surface it sits on, at the same time.
It's off by approx. 2 millimeters - not much, but enough to make it annoying. And paying that much for a machine I would expect the hardware to be straight at the least.
So anyone experienced something similar? Do you think Apple will replace it directly?

Hi Brody,
this discussion is really for another thread But no my 13" had a flickering display (the backlight dimmed slightly but constantly).
The 15" that went bad on me suddenly froze in the Finder during nothing but a TimeMachine backup. A hard reboot could not get me into the system (only got to the grey screen with the spinning cycle indicator). I couldn't even start from a CD.
So i guess it was more than just the hard drive. But I had just recently read about a lot of issues with the 7200 RPM - 500 GB drives that Apple puts in from the factory.

  • Airport not available on MacBook Pro 15 unibody mid 2009, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Ok, so I just recently put in a new hard drive and battery by myself, since my original MacBook Pro hard drive became "corrupted" most likely due to a parallel desktop software I was using. Anyway so I finally install everything on the new hard drive and airport is not working. The icon is NOT EVEN THERE on the menu bar. I go into Network and the only thing I've got is Ethernet and Firewall. I've tried the "+" thing, and it didn't work. I then went into "Assist Me" , then "Diagnostics" and the airport option is greyed out, so is the external modem. Oh, and the operating system is Snow Leopard  OS X 10.6.3. Has a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.
I also deleted the "SystemConfiguration" Folder and found something interesting. The "com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" was never there and when I reboot, the "com.apple.network.identification.plist" also disappeared. I had to drag it back into the folder from the desktop where I put a copy just in case something weird happened, which it did.
I checked System Profiler, clicked on AirPort and it gives me stuff under "Software Versions", so I'm guessing it's acknowledging that THERE IS a card and can give me all the information for it, but I can't get the mac to use it. I reset the PRAM AND SMC and still nothin.
So, I figured it must be hardware, right? So I open the mac like i did when I installed the new hard drive and battery, and I CANNOT FIND THE DARN AIRPORT CARD. On the mid 2010 models it's with the bluetooth card at the top and I've tried looking online for ANYONE, who has tried to get to the airport card on the mid 2009 model for the MacBook Pro 15 unibody. And found nothing. I think it's in the clutch, but I'm too scared to touch that area. Does anyone else have any ideas or have I covered all my bases?
I REALLY DO NOT want to go to Apple. I don't have AppleCare and don't have the money to have them poke around and tell me the same thing I already know. And I spent way too much on this computer to not be able to use it to full capacity. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

  • Flickering intermittent lines on my display (Macbook Pro 15in Unibody mid-2009)

    HI all,
My MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2009 is suddenly displaying strange artifacts across the display - flickering lines of color (seems like red is most common). When this happens if i flex the machine body i can usually get it to disappear. Running an external display works totally fine, even while lines are appearing on the built in display. Another strange symptom - while this is happening sometimes, when i am dragging a file in Finder, it refuses to release from 'dragging' - ie... the OS believes i still have the mouse button pressed down (whether using a trackpad or external mouse) and continues to do so until a restart or sometimes a force quit.
I suspect the display cable (which i have reseated to the connector), though the most effective quick fix while this is happening is pressure on the bottom, middle of the case (which of course worries me).
I should add, tho it seems strange and might be circumstantial - this all started after installing mountain lion (from snow leopard) and the artifacts dont seem to happen when i am running in boot camp.
Hoping this can be resolved by some minimal DIY fix...
Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hi,
Not really a suggestion as such, but I have just installed a WD Scorpio Blue 500gb HDD myself. Unfortunately I've been having some issues with it and started a topic on this site to find an answer:

  • My new HDD for Macbook pro 13" unibody is not recognized and I am using a new SATA cable

    Hey everyone,
I have a particular problem that I cannot seem to find an answer to.  My new 500gb internal drive for my Macbook Pro 13" unibody is not recognized.  The old HDD broke on me so I bought a new one but my macbook pro would not recognize it.  To troubleshoot that issue I purchased the SATA cable and replaced the old with the new.  The new HDD still will not show up in disk utility.
Please let me know what you think I may have missed or should do.
    Thank you

    jc1388,
Bring it to an Apple store Genius bar (make an appointment, so you don,t have to wait around forever) they will diagnose it for free and tell you your options/pricing. They have more extensive testing tools, maybe your logic board is failing/failed.
    best of luck

  • Macbook Pro 15in Unibody Wi-Fi Drop and Stay Off / Total System Freeze

    Hi.
Up until about two weeks ago I had no issues with my mac.  Then I installed Lion and about two days later the following occurred:
Macbook Pro 15in Unibody - drops wifi connection with numerous routers and different locations.  I turn Airport Utility off and it won't ever turn back on.  Restart is the only option...  Alternatively the mac will sometimes just freeze and I can't move the cursor or type at all.  Booted into BOOTCAMP partition and that freezes as well.
So, now I have bought a new Solid State Drive and done a fresh install of Snow Leopard.  About 5 seconds in and it froze again - so I restarted - and about 20 mins later the Airport Utility did the same issue, dropped the wifi and wouldn't turn back on after I turn it off.
Reset PRAM, Airport Utility did the same again.  So far, touch wood, only the one freeze since the new HHD and PRAM reset...
ANY IDEAS AT ALL WHAT THE HECK THIS CAN BE?  It is SO annoying I have been scouting the net but can't see an obvious solution.  I have however been shocked at sooooo many cases similar to this with the Macbooks...
    Thanks guys

Yes it will work just fine. I sell and set them up quite a bit with both PC's and Macs.
All N routers at the moment are all based on draft N protocol, even Apple's own Airport routers. So the Belkin N+ will work at N speeds if you set it to N mode only. Ofcourse for broad compatibility with all sorts of WiFi devices it is best to leave it in mixed mode.
For some background, i have used all sorts of makes of routers from Compaq/TrendNet (favourite)/Microsoft/Netgear (current favourite)/Dlink...and so on over the years, NOT any issues.
Apple's Airport extreme base stations (which are still draft N) aren't any more compatible than a Netgear or Belkin N router.

  • Where in NYC can I buy a new Macbook Pro 2011 unibody trackpad and the tools i need to replace it myself?

I am going to NYC in a week and I'm wondering if there is a store where I can buy a new trackpad for my Macbook Pro 2011 unibody. I would also like to buy the tools i need to replace it myself. I can't find anything when I search the interwebz.

The problem is that when the machine is closed, it goes to sleep, and in sleep mode, all that goes on is that a bare trickle of power is used to keep the contents of RAM alive.  Networking is definitely not active while asleep.
Now, regarding ds store's solution, that's a fairly bad idea.  If the machine is just sitting at your desk, you don't need to close it, or if you feel a need to close it you can use Kappy's solution.  (Although, it should be noted that apps like InsomniaX and Caffeine do not, as far as I know, keep a machine awake when the lid is shut.)  If you're worried about passersby seeing your screen, just activate the screen saver instead.  You could even require a password to dismiss the screen saver for added security.
On the other hand, if the machine is being transported, keeping the lid open and the machine running is not a good idea.  The sudden motion sensor ought to protect your hard drive against damage caused by moving the machine around...  if it's working properly, and I'd rather not depend on an "if" to prevent hardware damage to the machine.  Plus, if it's in a bag and you've forced it to stay running, it could overheat due to lack of ventillation.
So, long story short: if you're transporting it, close it and deal with logging back in to the network, and if it's on your desk, don't bother closing it.

  • If I were to sell my Macbook Pro 15" Unibody...

Hi, I am interested in selling my Macbook Pro 15" Unibody. Would it be best for me to sell it whole, or to sell it as parts?

Here is the thing. Assuming your MBP is under a year old, yours and most everybody elses is covered under warranty. So, you would likely be able to sell the motherboard and possibly the screen fairly quickly, as those components are generally the victims of accidental damage or spillage, which is not covered by warranty. The rest of it will be a little harder to unload until the machine is over a year old. At this point you are likely better to sell as a whole, as resale value on the unibody machines is excellent.

If you are in Hong Kong, go to Digital Trade, 1/F, Sincere Plaza, Argyle Street, and it will cost you 120-150HKD, but before you go check that your power button and home button are working correctly, if not press as hard as you can, hope this will help.

  • Bootcamp 3.1 Macbook Pro 15 Unibody Late 2008 fans working now?

I just upgraded bootcamp to 3.1 on my macbook pro 15 unibody late 2008. I ran Windows Experience Index under win7 Pro 64bit and the fans were humming loud and clear during the test which is a good sign. It runs about the same as when using 9600 in Leopard (very warm). Two finger right click is still a little sketchy, but at least I won't be using my macbook as a frying pan any time soon.

Resetting SMC could solve the problem.

And you need to install more RAM, I think.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 SSD Dual Drive Installation , i need to install ssd or hdd without removing my optical drive?

    salam 3lykum,
my MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 need to install SSD Dual Drive in the enclosure in the laptop, but without removing my optical drive? can one help me. and without cable sata to usb to use it external.

I only know of one 2 terabyte drive that will fit in a notebook - and it comes in an enclosure that you must disassemble to get to the drive -> http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRHTSK4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=110YIC0GU53A7&coliid=I38PEBUNYX6OUM&psc=1.
HGST does make a 1.5 terabyte drive that would work quite well in your machine - the Travelstar 5K1500.

Is there a website i can find quality keyboard covers for my Macbook pro 15" unibody for the following programs:

    Adobe (photoshop, after effects)
I also was looking around for a clear hard case.. is this one a good one? anyone have suggestions?

Depending on where you are it would be called google.xx and a third x when necessary. On another note, the covers on the apple.com site are quite good. I have the moshi one, it is really good. Except maybe that it gets a bit darker with time.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Unibody "Warped" or "Twisted" + Other Issues

    Hello everyone,
Over the past year or so I've saved my pennies and I bought a 13" MacBook Pro Unibody last year (November/December ish, I'll need to check). Since then I've had numerous problems with it, software and hardware, that make me regret the purchase.
Most recently I've noticed that the case is not straight or level. When the computer is sitting on a desk I can "wobble" it between the top left and button right corners. I've noticed this not only at home but at the library and school as well, so it's not the surface. After a bit of searching I see that numerous other people have had this issue with all MacBook Pro models, not just the 13". Does Apple really have this bad of quality and quality control?
I'm contemplating bringing it back to the Apple Store, but (and here's the "other issues" part of it) I'm already a frequent visitor to the Genius Bar! I've been there numerous times to get the lid readjusted and tightened, and only couple weeks ago I was there again to get a broken key put back on! While Apple's support is top notch, I can't believe I paid over $1,000 for a computer who's quality is superseded by much cheaper computers from Dell and HP.
What should my next move be? If I bring it in to the Apple Store's Genius Bar again, what options will I have for repair? Will I be given a completely new model or a refurbished model? In the latter case, will I be able to return the computer for a complete refund so I can take my money elsewhere?

Bring it to the Apple store. You are under warranty. They will explain your options.

  • Magsafe green Macbook Pro (aluminium unibody) not booting - any impact of Mountain Lion on battery?

    Hi,
I have the following issue and hope that someone can help me.
    Notebook
    - Macbook Pro 13'' aluminium unibody from mid 2011.
    Sympthoms
    - Mac OS upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
    - Couple of days later during the use Macbook Pro shut down - battery was drained; Magsafe not plugged in.
    - After plugging it Magsafe only green light was shown (cannot say whehter a "dim" green or "normal") - not charging.
    Already checked
    - I managed (not with the first attempt) to do the SMC (for Macbooks, where battery should not be removed), followed apple support steps and afterwards turn on the laptop.
    - It worked fine, while the battery statys was showing "not chargin" and stayed between 1% and 2%. Wokred like this for two days - always with Magsafe in and green light.
    - I did also try resetting PRAM - the Magsafe light never changed to amber.
    Current state
    - Yesterday it shut down again - accidentaly Mag safe was detached from the dc-in port.
    - No way to turn on again - SMC reset seems to be not working; Magsafe light is always green.
    Next steps ?
    - Read a lot and realized this can be: dc-in, logic board or a software issue...
    - Should I give it a try and open the unibody and try resetting SMC with battery out?
Many thanks for those who read this and have some input.
    Lukasz

Went to the official Apple premium service center, Memoire Vive SA at Rue de Valentin in Lausanne. They checked my Macbook for issues (free of charge, although the website stated 90 chf; my macbook is out of warranty now) and confirmed that the issue is with the Magsafe (I did not have a chance to check it earlier). Got the new one and everything started working properly. Luckily it was not DC-In, Logic board or any other  abit more complicated thing.

  • Silent SATA for MacBook Pro 13" Unibody

    Hi,
i have a MBP 13" with an Intel i5 CPU. I recognized that the HDD is much louder than in my MBP 13" 2010 i had before. The HDD Aplle delivered was a Hitachi HTS545032B9A302 with 320GB. Does someone else have the problem with an loud HDD?
Some with an alternative Option? I tried a Toshiba MK3265GSX but it is as loud as the Hitachi. I'm looking for a silent drive, as in the 2010-Model, which I don't hear.
I read about the Hitachi Travelstar 5kXXX, has somone experiences with this HDD? Does it have Idel-Clicks like the HTS545032B9A302?
    Sorry for my bad english.

i have the same model of macbook pro 13" and suffer from the loudness of the system in general. harddisc is much louder than MID2010 model. i had the macbook exchanged now two times - and it got worse. first was seagate - it was just like a loud fan noise. then the next hitachi and it got the clicks on top.
also the very loud fan noise as soon as the cpu hits 25% ... the system ghoes up to 6400rpm and is as loud as a jetplane.
im really angry, that apple made this release so bad. also the buildquality is much worse than the last model. the lid is not closing perfectly. the first macbook ive got was so bend, that i had to put 8 businesscards under one end to make it stable....
im really dissapointed from this release - and if i could i would return it and get back to my really perfect MID2010 ... sadly i sold it allready...
