Warping Around Battery

I got a new macbook for Christmas, and after two weeks of light use have a bit of warping. Specifically, the grey plastic on the front left edge of the keyboard is peeling away from the white plastic. Also, the battery no longer sits flush.
As of now, the problems are minor. The spot on the front edge is maybe an inch wide, and only wide enough to slide a piece of paper into. The place where the battery is off is a bit worse than that. I'm wondering whether:
1. This is something that other people have experienced with rev2 Macbooks? I've heard of the MacBook Pros warping around the battery, but not seen reports of the same thing for the Macbooks.
2. Whether this is the sort of thing that Apple will fix, or if I'll have to wait for it to get worse? I feel a little silly complaining about small problems, but the whole reason I switched to a mac was to not have to deal with small problems.
3. After wandering around the support site for awhile, I'm a bit confused -- is there really no way to e-mail in a support request?
I can post pictures if they'd be helpful,
ross

...except that is for the Macbook Pro, not the Macbook.
If you suspect your battery is warping, I would immediately contact Apple or have the computer looked at an Apple Store. A defective battery is a potential safety issue and should not be ignored.
As for the battery not sitting flush, every Apple notebook i've owned has had a non-flush battery. It could be that you didn't notice it when you first got the computer (like me), but the fit of the battery should not change significantly over time.

  • Bottom cover warped by battery heat

My MacBook is just over a year old and the bottom cover is warped from the battery heat from charging (pulled away from under the front center below the mouse pad), is this covered by Apple Care extended plan (cannot get any infromation online as site is down)? Love it overall, but the bottom plastic is cheap!

    WAITTTTTTTTT! =)
I didn't realize that you were having the bad rubber bottom issue =) Apple is covering it.
I had the same issue with mine.
    3 Options
bring to Apple store and they do it
bring to an Apple athorized repair and they do it
order the part for free and do it yourself

I have purchased I phone 4S on April 30th 2014. Since I bought this phone, I have been facing issues such as Battery Back up, Software and Hardware issue and hang issue. I had visited I store last month where they just formatted my phone. The issues were not taken care completely, even till now the issues are on. I would appreciate if you could help me with the right escalation desk for raising my voice to Apple team.
I have been using apple product since long now and never face such dissatisfaction in past

Hello, when you are having an error on your iPhone and going to the Apple store to get it taken care of, make sure you speak up and provide as much detail as you can. The first iPad Mini I had bought had errors on it, and I didn't speak up and provide further details on my issue.
Hope your issue gets resolved soon!

  • Won't charge with USB or iMove Boombox But Will With FireWire

I Have a 4th Gen 40GB iPod the other week it died from having an alarm on so i went to charge it on my pc but it was too dead to charge with my pc. because I don't know where my Firewire power adapter is i hooked it up to my car adapter on the way to work. thus it was charging, but once i got to work i hooked it up to my imove plugged into the ac outlet, it said it was fully charged (i.e. the battery indicator was full and not moving and a lightning bolt showing AC Power) any way an hour later it popped up a massage that says power low must shutdown. it dose the same thing if i'm syncing With the USB cord. i would us the firewire but my firewire port isn't working any more it's not the cable or the computer i tried it on other PC Firewire will charge, & USB won't and says it already is even though it's draining battery not pulling power from the pc. so now i'm trying to re sync my 35GB or so "over 6,000 songs" over USB before my battery dies again. (Yes i Have A Dock) Thanks Apple for a great product that only faults mainly around battery/power issues....

good to know that 3G ipods don't charge through usb - but I still don't understand why an AC adapter wouldn't work. I can't even figure out the charging patern - it seems that when I plug it in through USB it drains the battery, but the battery life varies. One minute it will have full charge, then the next it will turn off and say it is empty, then the next it will have half life, all without plugging it in. Frustrating...

  • MacBook problems in the UK

My white MacBook was made in week 21, and I am experiencing many of the issues being mentioned on these boards (heat, discoloration, mooing, as well as a bit of buckling on the front of the case).
From the conversations I have had with AppleCare here in the UK, they seem to be less willing to offer fixes than those of you in the US.
Has anyone else in the UK got an early MB and had succes in getting these issues resolved?
I'm considering a trip to the Regent Street Genius Bar, but it seems to be fully booked every time I try.
    Thanks for your help.

Do NOT bother taking it to the Regent Street store. It is a hellish experience and no mistake.
(Ned - you cannot actually phone ahead to make an appointment at the Regent Street store. The only way you can make an appointment is by queuing at the Genius Bar or via online genius bar reservations. However, the latter you can pretty much only do at the store, as the genius.apple.com reservations part of the website usually comes up "Service not available at this time" - at least it has been doing every time I've tried over the past few weeks. And if you queue, you will have to wait behind forty disgruntled iPod owners for half an hour before being told that the earliest appointment is in five hours' time, and to come back then. But that will still be an earlier appointment than you would get via the online service in store...)
Anyway... To the op: I have actually had very decent service from AppleCare Europe (I too live in the UK) with regards to my MacBook - although I cannot say quite the same about the repair service. My MacBook suffered from horrible discolouration (everything else was fine). When I first phoned AppleCare a few weeks ago, they were sympathetic but said that I should take it to a local service centre for evaluation. I work full-time and didn't get chance to do so, but the discolouration only continued to worsen so I called them again. This time they agreed to take it in to replace the top case, presumably because the issue had become more widely reported in the meantime. They shipped out a box and I got it back only two days later, with a spiffy new top case.
Sadly, the engineers only replaced the top case and not the screen bezel, which had already started to discolour slightly and is clearly made of the same faulty plastic, they managed to chip a tiny piece of the polycarbonate during the replacement, and they didn't fit my new top casing very well. It was warped around the edges so that there was a good millimetre gap between that and the polycarbonate in several places - enough space to catch it on something and snap the plastic by accident, which, being a rather clumsy person, worried me.
I phoned AppleCare and they were sympathetic, and said they would replace the screen bezel. But then I noticed that my replacement top case was already starting to discolour, so I politely kicked up a fuss about this and its poor fitting too. The upshot is that my MacBook was taken away again today to have all of these issues fixed.
The point of this rather long-winded post is only that there are AppleCare reps out there who will be sympathetic in the UK. To be honest, I have been a bit liberal with the use of "I" in this post: my secret weapon in all this has been my partner. She is much more of a "people person" than myself, so when I was making no headway I asked her to call and lo and behold, AppleCare were willing to help. Like others have said, it comes down to the rep you get and your own manner - my own is too flustered even though I try to be polite, but because my partner is calm and polite but firm, she gets much better results.
Keep trying AppleCare - I am sure they will help you in the end. You can always point them here to show that other UK users have had these issues repaired.

  • KT4 Ultra & ATI 8500DV

I just built a new system (first time) using a KT4 Ultra motherboard.  It was suggested by a friend who builts alot of computers.  I want to do video capture and burn DVDs so he also suggested the ATI 8500DV.  I read about it and like all the features.
System will not POST with ATI 8500DV.  I bought a cheaper card (Pine 32MB 3D Phantom XP-2800) to get the system up and running while I try to debug the 8500DV.  I have updated the AMI BIOS to 1.3.  I also reduced the AGP to 2x.  My FSB is set at 100.
    Any suggestions on
HOW TO GET THE 8500DV WORKING?
I took the 8500DV card to a shop in town where I bought the Pine AGP card.  He checked it on another motherboard with no problems.

I'm having problems as well with my aiw Radeon 8500dv on the KT4 ultra. I have everything updated except the bios Currently running v1.2. I can't seem to make a bootdisk that'll give me access to the C: drive so I can't update to 1.3 (got 1.2 through live update, and it created the bootdisk for me, don't understand why 1.3 doesn't showup there).
Originally I had problems with graphics not rendering properly in Dark Age of Camelot, other characters warping around or ghosting and world objects not loading, I've fixed that for the most part by getting help on with what everything in my bios should be set to. However, I'm also having trouble with DVD playback not working properly, I get constant artifacting on anything that moves.

  • Resounding disappointment... lucky number three?

As I write this, I am patiently awaiting MacBook Pro #3 to be delivered. What I expected to be more like my previous experiences with Apple (all good) has turned into a 2 week-long quest to obtain a properly functioning product that has already been paid for. I understand that sometimes you get a lemon. It's a side product of a fast moving industry. However, after reading several stories here and elsewhere, coupled with the two MacBook Pros that I have had to return, I am concerned.
I bought at the end of July. I thought that surely the known issues the MacBook Pro had would be ironed out.
Now I feel paranoid. I feel frightened into purchasing an AppleCare Protection Plan for my newest machine. Sure, it may be great out of the box, but what's the failure rate of these things after a year? Nobody knows yet. The fact that so many seem affected from the get go does not bode well.
I don't even know that the issues are isolated to MBPs. Five people in my group of friends have picked up an Intel-based Mac. Four out of five have had serviceable issues. Four out of five! That's awful. One iMac (logic board replacement), one Macbook (logic board replacement), and two MacBook Pros (all of the known issues).
Apple does not have to be concerned with losing my business. After switching four years ago, there is no chance of me going back. As a photographer and student, I count on Macs daily, and I love the platform.
Die-hard Mac fans can take it. We shouldn't have to, but we will. What about new switchers? Do they have the patience?

The first one I received I did not even turn on -- right out of the box it looked as if someone had taken a seat on it. I've heard of warping on the case, but this was extreme. Both sides of the display flared up a lot. The packaging and shipping container were absent of damage. I contacted Apple immediately to let them know it was severely warped, and they instructed me to return it.
The second MBP I received had minor warping around the optical drive, but it didn't bother me and from what I understand this is somewhat typical for the aluminum case. I used it the first day thinking there was not a problem. While using the machine on day two, I noticed a low-level buzzing within the computer. I unplugged it from the power supply, and immediately the buzz changed to a whine, higher in volume. I had read briefly about both of these problems, but I thought maybe I could live with them, figuring I could test it out for a bit. What put me over the top on contacting Apple was when I watched video on it. I noticed that voices, particularly male, would sound muddy and distorted. Music also sounded strange. I played a song in iTunes, opened the System Prefences, and played with the balance. On the left speaker, everything was clear and sounded great. When I shifted the balance to the right, everything was garbled and not listenable. I headed to the boards and Google, discovering that this also was a common occurrence.
Further research indicated that the machine was a Week 21 build. It truly amazes me that my machine had those long known issues five months into the product cycle. I really hope that they have gotten a handle on it in the more recent runs.
I will most likely move on AppleCare. I had it on my Powerbook, but never used it once. Well, the one time I tried they said the damaged was not covered, as it was aesthetic. The case had collapsed on top of the optical drive; I recall the Genius telling me it was Tier 2 repair and would cost some ridiculous sum of money.

  • I cannot get jpeg I import to resize, move, text wrap.  Extremely frustrated.  Any help please?

I've gone through the help sections and tips.  I bring in an image, and cannot resize it.  I use the image mask and am able to crop the image to what I need.  But, it is placed badly in the middle of the page, won't resize, and worst of all-I cannot move the image without it disappearing out of the box and removing itsself from the page.  Text won't warp around the image, and all of the so-called controls are greyed out, wether I have the image selected or not.
My question is:  How the H#%% do I work with an image in ibooks author?  Is this program messed up?  Is Apple planning to fix this?  These actions are easy to do in Pages, but iBooks does not work!  What box did I not check right to work with pictures?

Consider the image and tbe mask as two separate items.
You can move the image itself which is below the mask, and you can move and resize the mask itself as you choose to "crop" or size the image.  Use the handles on each to move or resize and also the size slder on tbe mask.
Deselecting or clicking off the image closes the mask and you  should be able to move image as you chose.
With regards your last paragraph....the answer is to learn about iBooks Author and what it can do, before starting out on a serious book project. The program is not messed up. You must have spent time learning tbe ins snd outs of Pages at first, iBA is similar to Pages in many ways.
Go to your iTunes Connect page and open the Deliver your Content,  Top section Featured Resourses, there is a user guide and a formatting guide and below in iBooks Author ..is a superb instructional video. It will show you how to use many of the functions including the mask.

  • First beta prototype of e2publish

e2publish is a sophisticated AIR application that uses the Text Layout Framework.  I've just made the first beta prototype available of my website.
    http://www.e2easy.co.cc/e2publish.html
An ambitious project such as this relies on the feedback of test users.  Comments, suggestions, recommendations, ideas, and bug reports.  Let me know what you think?
A video presentation about this project can be found here:-
    http://e2easy.wordpress.com/2009/10/19/announcing-an-adobe-air-publish-application/
The most novel feature is way the text arranges itself to warp around the pictures, wherever they are placed on the page.

Thanks for feedback Richard.  Your comments are very useful for me.  And my replies are useful to me too - as they help me to revisit, rethink, and crystallise my ideas and vision for this project.
    >I wanted to draw more boxes and connect them with arrows.
In layout mode, you can use the Layout drop-down menu.  It allows you to Create (add) new text boxes, Split an existing text box, or Remove a text box.  It's my fault you didn't see these - and I was already thinking that I should put some buttons next to the layout view, where users will notice them.  UI design is an iterative process.
There are three pre-set layouts.  One, Two, or Three columns.  I'm not sure about the same layout on every page?  Magazines don't tend to do this. On some pages, text boxes are arranged around images that feature more prominently than the text.
Soon, I'll add a feature to create text boxes that aren't connected to the flow.  With optional big quotation marks for pull quotes.
I was thinking of allowing the user to save layouts, so that they can then apply a saved layout to any page.
    >Is the undo stack integrated?  The UndoManager is designed with the hope that other clients can use it and stack their own operations.
I already have my own undo manager class that I've been using and refining for years.  It works well with my own custom components. Unfortunately, Adobe's UndoManager assumes it runs the whole show.  This frustrated me.  It's a pity that it wasn't designed with adequate hooks to play second fiddle.  In the end, I devised workarounds, and implemented a scheme so that Adobe's UndoManager is controlled from my undo manager.
    >It'd be nice if the ctrl-z and ctrl-y keys worked everywhere and not just over the TLF area.
I'll get around to it after Christmas, when I'll have access to a windows PC for testing.  Everything works as it should on a Mac.  I just need to implement naive PC menus.  They'll handle keyboard shortcuts properly, and channel everything through my undo manager.  (e2spreadsheet and e2vector also require this.)  Currently, the ability to do ctrl-Z or ctrl-Y inside a text box on a PC causes a problem.  Because it bypasses my own undo manager.
    >The scrollbar doesn't indicate there are more pages or provide a way to switch pages - that's annoying.
I attempted to write this application prior to the Flash 10 player (before flash.text.engine), with my own textflow mechanism and TextFields.  (I actually made a request to Adobe for a "textflow" mechanism about six years ago! - at least we got there in the end).  TextFields just weren't powerful enough.  I battled against performance issues, and this page-by-page scheme was a compromise at the time to reduce computational complexity.  TextFlow seems powerful enough - I should go back to scrolling over the entire document - you're right.
    >Not sure if your goal is to demonstrate knowledge of TLF and Flash, or to make some sort of word processor.
This is definitely a conversation I want to have.  This is the first prototype, warts-and-all.  My vision is more than just a word processor.  I want to create a publishing application capable of creating stylised and captivating e-magazine pages.   I wrote something on my blog yesterday, where I called it a potential tablet magazine 2.0 solution.  I made comparisons with "Web 2.0" that allowed non-technical users to collaborate write to the internet, not just read from it.  My vision is to allow enthusiasts to collaborate on their own magazines.  Not just read them.
So I definitely want to know what you think is missing that would make this more like a real word-processor?  I'm hoping that Squiggly will soon be integrated with the TLF, and I'll be able to put spell-checking in quite effortlessly.
Bear in mind that I'm working on this in my spare time.  This isn't Buzzword.  Nobody is throwing huge amounts of money at me to do this.  In fact, every day that I work on this, I'm losing money because I could have worked that day for one of my commercial Flex project clients.  So while I want to this project to aspire to a professional standard.  It might take a little longer - I still have my day job.

I have a 2007 Macbook, so it's probably a lot older than your Macbook Pro, but it sounds like what happened to me, except that mine hadn't travelled anywhere. I pulled out the ram and blew out some dust, popped them back in, and wha-la! it turned back on and worked better than ever! Or otherwise you've got a dud/old/warped/fried battery, which is also what happened to my laptop - it got so  bad it did what your laptop is doing. Ordered a new battery online and all good since then. Or otherwise, like the previous post asked, 'is it plugged in?'

  • MBP 17": Sudden shut down with plenty of battery, then battery warped

My battery warped while in the computer and I had a hard time getting it out. This was after my computer began shutting down without any warning while on battery power. I called my local Apple reseller this morning and was told to bring the computer and battery in so they could check it out. When I arrived, they told me that they had a simple test which they had to run on the computer with the warped battery inserted. Pass: no free replacement. Fail: Replace the battery for me.
The USB gadget they used indicated pass, so I was out of luck. In other words, they said that my battery tested "OK". "But it's warped!", I said. They agreed, but only offered to sell me a new one for $129.95 + tax. I said that I wanted to complain to Apple since the battery was obviously on the way to a more serious problem and might damage my MBP. They said that they would complain if they were me....
I was in a bind since I need to travel soon, so I bought a new battery.
The explanation was that Apple recognizes that there is a problem, but since my MBP/warped battery passed the required Apple test, they couldn't replace it for free. The battery was so warped that I my computer wobbled on my desk! This is crazy! Those of you who have been reporting the sudden shut down had better be very careful. You may be on your way to a potentially catastrophic event in which the battery failure does serious damage to your MBP. I've read some real horror stories about this on the net.
    Are you reading this, Apple?
    -jr

Just a follow-up regarding my old battery:
I put it in the box that the new one came in and intended to recycle it. Then I forgot about it and looked at the box just now. The other side of the battery also warped to the point that I couldn't get the box out of the sleeve that fits around it without tearing it (which I did).
Pretty scary looking. Silver pouches (cells?) exposed and deformed. Afraid of the thing at this point. A fire hazard?
Out of the house in a can it went until tomorrow morning when I will get rid of it legally.
BTW, my deformed and potentially hazardous battery only had a cycle count of 137 when all this fun started....
    Please be careful.

I ordered a battery for my laptop because it said to replace battery soon.  How long can I let the new battery sit around as I wait for the old one to run out of more charge?  Will the new one become less effective if it sits around too long?

How much capacity is remaining on your current battery?
    Check your power status
From the  menu: Hold OPTION and click System Information... èHardware è Power
Copy and Paste in your reply.
The new battery will become less effective if you store it in a hot or humid environment. It should be stored at room temperature (22 C).
    Long term storage (6 months):
Apple recommends that you store the battery with a 50% charge. If you store a battery when it’s fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding any charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may experience some loss of battery capacity, meaning it will have a shorter life.
