Warranty for broken hold switch?

A friend of mine (I'm stuck with a 3G 20GB iPod!) has a 1st gen. 4GB Nano that is experiencing problems. The hold switch doesn't work all of the time, i.e. sometimes you move the switch and it will 'unlock' the Nano, and sometimes it won't.
It seems like a physical problem, maybe a bad solder joint or something similar to that. The Nano exhibits no signs of external damage or dropping. It's still under the original 1-year warranty, if she sends it back will she have to pay for the repair? I've never used the Service Depot so I don't know how it works. If it was a broken screen clearly caused by impact, I would expect to have to pay, but with something like this I'm not sure what the deal is.
Anyone have experience they could share? Thanks!

  • My ipod touch is 3 months old is it under warranty for broken charger pins

my ipod touch is 3 months old i tried to plug the charger cable in yesterday and it would not plug in.Now it plugs in but struggles to charge will apple replace this for me? is it under warranty as it is only 3 months old?

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and find out. Usually Apple says that damage is caused by operator erro/misuse and thus not covered by warranty

  • Broken Hold Switch On Creative Zen 4 GB

just last night I was watching a video on my couch with my zen, i had put it on hold and you know, everything was working great.
I turned the video and player off and carried it up to my room. There I got into bed and turned on my player and plugged in my little portable speakers, then i tried to put it on hold, but the switch made a weird noise and noticed it felt soft when slid into the hold position!
now my player won't even be on hold and basically drains my battery, rendering it useless to me.
Anyone else with this similar problem?

  • Hold switch does not keep on - is the switch broken?

Hi. My faithful 5th gen. iPod started to stand on its own - it didn't like to obey my wish for keeping hold switch on or off. It is on, all the time. So, is this a sign for independence or resignation? In other words, is the switch physically broken or not? I've done all those restarts etc. Regards, T.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have performed all the R's except Restore. When I try to restore the process begins, the status window opens, then an "Auto Play" window opens in the upper left side of my computer screen and I can see song titles from my Library flashing by. After a few seconds the "Auto Play" window closes, the status window closes, and and error message window appears saying that the restore process has ended due to an unknown problem. I've tried to run the Restore process several times with the same result. I am running iTunes 7.0.1.8 and the summary info in iTunes says that my iPod is up to date. Where do I go from here?

  • The hold switch on my iPod classic is broken, so basically my iPod is always locked and my iPod is unusable, how can I fix this?

The hold switch is locking my ipod no matter what side it's on, if I mess with it it will sometimes 'unlock' for about two seconds, but that's about it. Definitely not enough time to find a song to play. Help?

The hold switch is likely faulty and will need to be replaced.  Apple will exchange your iPod out for a refurbished one of the same size and generation for a flat fee.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
There are several third party services out there who will actually swap out the lock switch for a new one for a much cheaper cost.
Otherwise, you can purchase the replacement part and put it in yourself using one of the many guides found online.

  • My ipod nano is frozen, but my hold switch is broken so I can't reset it.

I have an 8gb ipod nano. When I plugged it into my computer to sync it it said I had to restore it.  I clicked restore, but it said the ipod couldn't be found and then my ipod froze. I can't reset it because my hold switch no longer works and toggling it doesn't do anything.  Is there a way to fix it?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it says place the iPod in recovery mode
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs:
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    or
    http://joshuabailey1997.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/recboot-v1-3/
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    and
    RecBoot tip
RecBoot may have problems on 64X windows, then try:
Tenorshare ReiBoot – Enter & Exit iPhone, iPad, iPod Recovery Mode with a Single Click
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    Installs blootware on PC too
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • HT4085 Why isn't "hold" an option for the side switch on the iPad?

Why isn't "hold" an option for the side switch on the iPad?
I'd like to be able to let my 3 year old watch videos on the iPad, but young kids want to touch the screen.  I need a method to disable the touch screen.  Seems simple, why isn't this an option?
Is there a way to write an app that allows the side switch to act as a "hold" switch?

The obvious solution is to put the iPad screen out of his reach.  Now that's innovative!

  • Hold Switch

Not sure when I realized it was broken, but I think it was 1/2 mo. to 1 mo. ago. I traded in my iPod for a new one in May/June, because the USB was fried from trying to charge it on an old computer. I never used the new one on the old computer, and the hold switch definitely worked on my old one, so I doubt there's any connection.
The lock that shows up at the top of the screen will sometimes flash on and off, not rapidly, but occasionally, and only when I have the hold switch on. When the hold switch is on but the lock isn't showing, it's the same as if the hold switch wasn't on at all.
    Thanks for any help

Umm, yeah. Sorry, I should've specified my question better. But yeah, the hold switch is messed up. Does anyone know how to fix it?
Yeah, I traded in my iPod by coming to the Apple Store and telling them what was wrong, and it was still under the warranty so they replaced it with a new one for me. The only downside was that the one I turned in was laser engraved and the one that I got back was not, but not a big deal.

  • Hold Switch Problems

Recently, my 2GB iPod Nano's hold switch began giving me problems when I accidently pushed the hold switch too hard too fast and it caused the hold switch to become disconnected from the slider. It is now pushed down just enough to were the hold switch slider just slides back and forth uselessly. It is always in the locked position. I know that there is probably some way too fix this but I haven't thought of it yet. I am currently waiting for the iPod remote ( w/ hold switch) to arrive and as of today that will be my next plan of action. Also, I have already sent the iPod to apple and they said they wouldn't fix it because it was accidental damage or abuse and that isn't covered under the warrenty . ( Well they would fix it but they wanted 205.00 USD) Does anybody have any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are other places that can fix your iPod other than Apple. For example, try checking out iPod ResQ, or Broken iPods.
Of course, you could possibly take it apart yourself, and try to put the hold switch back together. Note that doing this will will discontinue your current Apple warranty on your iPod.
    I hope this helps!

  • Hold switch doesn't work....can i fix it?

I just went and got my ipod repaired but they just gave me a brand new one and the hold switch DID work...for the frist day. then it worked occasionally, and now it dooesn't work at all and i've had it for ABOUT a week. can i fix it myself or should i give it back to them to be repaired or to get ANOTHER new one?

I, personally, wouldn't tempt fate and risk invalidating your warranty - just take it back!!

  • The Hold Switch is Messed up

I was listening to music and went to change a song then it looked like it was frozen so i switched the hold button thinking that was it, but it fixed itself in a few minutes. Then when the iPod came back on it said the hold switch was turned to on but it wasn't. Now i cannot do anything with it!!
    IBM Thinkpad   Windows XP Pro

Restart your ipod. Turn hold switch on and off (even though your pod says its on, it might work) then hold the menu button and the middle button at the same time for ten seconds. It doesn't need to be connected to your computer. If you don't get it, refer to the documentation that came with your iPod.
If it doesn't work, restore it. If not, then we have to go a step further.
If you're still under store warranty, find your receipt and replace it.If not send it in to Apple. If you're still under warranty with them, they'll fix it for free. If not, then I'm not sure how much it'll cost, but probably from 20-50 dollars.

  • Nano 4th gen hold switch not working

Hello. I just bought a used nano 4th gen on eBay. The hold switch is not working - the click wheel remains active and no lock icon appears in the upper right corner of the screen. It's on the latest firmware 1.04 and I've done a restore twice already.
The seller claims the hold switch did work before he sent it. Is there anything I can try to get it to work? It's out of warranty.
    Thanks

  • Hold Switch Pushed into iPod

Last week, I noticed my hold switch was starting to collapse into the iPod. One side of it was lopsided, and I was required to use my fingernail to push it out of Hold. Today, it was pushed so far in, that it's difficult to get it out even using my fingernail. I have never put any extreme pressure on the hold button, and I've only dropped the iPod a few times, never on a hard surface and not for a long time.
I've only had this iPod since around May, when my second iPod mini (the first one broke, of course) died and I sent it back to Best Buy and got $200-something in store credit. So I paid the $70 to get a new iPod video, and didn't get an extended warranty again. I guess I didn't need it, considering the thing could only go 4 months without starting to show problems.
So, my question is, can I take it somewhere, like Apple Store, to have them fix whatever's making the hold button collapse? Or do I have to send it back to Best Buy and wait a month to get credit back to buy a new one? Does Apple purposely make iPods so they will eventually just start crapping out, or what? Because this has been my third iPod in an 18-month period.

    My suggestion...
If you can, go in person to your nearest Apple Retail store and have it looked at by someone at the Genius Bar.
(At some stores, there may be a separate bar specifically for iPods).
It is crucial to make an appointment online. I wouldn't recommend going there in person without making an online appointment 1st. Expect a LONG wait if you do go without making the online reservation.
If you are a ProCare member, I believe you can make an appointment up to one week in advance. If you are NOT a member, you can only make an appointment the same day.
