Warrantying an iPhone internationally

There seems to be one major problem with the iPhone warranty system: claiming it from overseas. Here's my situation...
I bought an iPhone 3GS from the Apple online store in New Zealand (my home). I'm in Japan for 4 months right now and my iPhone has stopped working (completely unresponsive no matter what I do). Apple tell me I cannot warranty my iPhone through Apple in Japan. The Japanese postal system (or DHL, Fed Ex or any other freighting company) wont allow me to send the phone by air due to it's un-removable lithium battery. And Apple NZ wont send it back internationally either for the same reason.
I have found a dangerous goods freighting service, but it'll cost me almost half what the iPhone is worth to send to NZ and back to Japan again. My only other option is to wait until I get back to NZ in 3 months.
So right now I have an iPhone that is unusable. This is designed as a product to travel with. I'm travelling. It stopped working. And now I can't get it fixed.
As far as I understand it, all Apple products except iPhone are possible to warranty internationally. The exception of iPhone is due to the differences in cell phone systems around the world.
So right now there seems to be no solution to my problem. If Apple can't offer a true 'international' warranty on the iPhone and it can't be sent internationally by customer, maybe they need to offer a business to business freighting service from Apple in one country to Apple in another.
Has anyone else come across this same problem?

The iPhone is a GSM phone that works on virtually any network in the world regardless the country where the iPhone was sold officially by Apple. This has nothing to do with it.
Up until recently, the iPhone was sold in the UK as carrier locked with O2 only, which is hardware related, not SIM card or software related. If someone from the UK with an O2 carrier locked iPhone experienced a problem with their iPhone while visiting the U.S. for example that could not be resolved by any other means besides an exchange under warranty, each Apple store in the U.S. keeps an inventory of iPhone service units for an exchange under warranty when needed which are carrier locked with AT&T at the factory. The iPhone is sold in the U.S. as carrier locked with AT&T only, and each Apple store in the U.S. does not keep an inventory of iPhone service units for an exchange under warranty for the iPhone sold as carrier locked with a designated carrier in each country throughout the world.
And the same for every country where the iPhone is sold officially by Apple. Apple stores in Japan do not keep an inventory of iPhone service units for an exchange under warranty that are carrier locked with AT&T at the factory for example.
This is not feasible for a number of reasons. If the iPhone were sold as officially unlocked in each country throughout the world, it would be different.

There is NO International Warranty for the iPhone. Your best bet is to purchase one in Thailand. If you purchase a phone in France, you will NOT get warranty service on it in Thailand and will have to return it to France (or any EU country) for warranty service.

I have heard stories that Apple will not even look at an iPhone purchased
in another country at any price since they will not be able to replace with an

You can only purchase a factory unlocked iPhone directly from Apple.

AT&T service iPhone International Data Roaming - excessive fees

Am sure for many international travelers this will be a nice customer service improvement.
Send them a mail as well. It may help all of us traveling overseas.
"I do have following concerns on AT&T's iPhone International Data roaming service.
I voiced them as well to your service center reps.
The feature is a nice useful service.
But I encountered a number of flaws:
- Long time for service calls.
- Misrepresentation of costs (overcharge of 150%), and
- Resulting in excessive costs.
I am fully aware of all stories on international calls/data roaming with iPhone (ref suggestions on AT&T FAQ)
No need to fill me in on that.
Here is what happened:
- before a month of overseas travel (mid Dec - mid Jan), I had the service activated:
it took me 1/2 hr waiting at the phone before I got to speak a AT&T service rep.
- I was told the service will be charged pro rata (ie days of usage) and for a month travel that would be 25 USD.
and I had to call back upon return to disactivate/cancel service.
- Upon return I called back AT&T service center , again a long on hold waiting time,
and I was told I needed to wait for my next invoice statement to see the my completed overseas period on the bill, and could only cancel the service then.
- This week I received this next statement, called back AT&T service center , again a long on hold waiting time,
and now I was told the service would be cancelled only as from this very day, and no retroactive cancellation.
I was told the reason is to allow bills from overseas carriers to be taken into account for the invoicing and the international feature.
In other words, if I had cancelled immediately upon return, overseas charges booked into my bill after my cancellation call (but incurred before) would be hitting me at full charge.
Thanks for doing so, but all this results in a 2.5 months service period for this feature, while I had only wished a 1 month service period and was told I would incur only a 1 month service charge !
A number of suggestions,
- make the feature true pro rata charges, now it is a misrepresentation and an excessive overcharge.
- AT&T has a nice individual account profile online, why can one not activate/disactivate the service there ? Will be much faster.
- or have the service activated with a separate credit card purchase/billing ?
Hey, and advertise it on iPhone/Apple.
Loads of people who are traveling overseas will be interested ! "

If you go to Settings -> Network, there is an option to turn off data roaming.
However, if she hasn't updated her firmware since she purchased it that option may not be available.
iPhone Firmware updates are downloaded via iTunes. Connected the iPhone to iTunes, and if it doesn't prompt you to update, then click on "Check for Updates" in the iPhone Summary tab.

Try a different sim than the one that is in it. If you get service, it is unlocked.
Where - in what country from what seller - did you get this iPhone?
Why do you not trust what the seller told you about the locked/unlocked status?

warrenty cover defects which is not casued by user usage / malusage
warrenty covers everything in the box so it covers your headset as much as your phone

Right. So you're telling me that Apple has left someone in charge who is totally screwing their customers' experience and no one at Apple will help reign them in and set them straight?
I guarantee you that she's not the only person who's had this experience and it **** well sours me from buying another iPhone if I know it won't be taken care of if something goes wrong.

iCloud accounts cannot be deleted. You can sign in with another iCloud account. If you have encountered the activation lock, wherein you will need to eneter the Apple ID and password that was used to first activate the phone, you will need to eneter the correct information.
