Warthogs Loose in New York State!

Well, looks like Rodney got of of New York State, just in time: http://gothamist.com/2011/07/31/the_wild_boar_invasion_has_already.php
Seems that warthogs are running amok! Hope they do not find him in Mound, MN.

I would anticipate that the local restaurants began to offer Wild Boar Chops as the "special of the day."
I am amazed at how quickly a domestic hog goes full boar (pun intended), when they go feral - it is almost like a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde thing. The body shape changes, the tusks grow almost overnight, the hair cover increases, and their nature takes a very bad turn. I would have thought that it would take a generation, but it does not!
Sorry that you had to deal with this - afterall, Autumn and Halloween are just not that cool, without pumpkins.
I mean, what if a herd of warthogs were in this pastoral scene?

  • Anyone else in northern New York State getting boned by Verizon??

I have a residence on the St. Lawrence River (Thousand Islands) in northern New York. I continue to get charged for roaming in Canada, even though I am not in Canada. Verizon acknowledged the problem, which is caused by their poor tower coverage. They promised to back out the charges and fix it so that I would no longer incur Canadian roaming charges. Verizon reneged on both counts, and I am on the hunt for a new provider--probably AT&T. I wondered if anyone else is experienced the same hose job that I am(?).

I have the s5. I was told by two different Verizon folks that there is no device-based solution. They told me they are aware of this problem and apologized profusely.
I was promised that the July charges would be backed out and that a billing-based fix would preclude this from happening any more. Neither promise was fulfilled.

  • I live in California but will be in New York next week during the launch of the iPhone 5. Will I still be able to "upgrade" out of state?

I live in California but will be in New York next week during the launch of the iPhone 5. Will I still be able to "upgrade" even though I'm from another state? I ask because my dad had problems doing this for the iPhone 3GS launch. He waited in line all day, finally got in the store and they told him it it not possible to upgrade if you reside in another state. I'm really hoping things have changed.

Based on your Dad's experience, I wouldn't rely on what you hear here. I'd call your carrier & the store you plan on going to.

  • Atlantic City, NJ and New York, NY calling area

I have search the Internet for this and have not had any real luck.
What is the local calling area for Atlantic City, NJ and New York, NY, that will not occur long distance charges.
Mainly for Atlantic City, I'm worried about if Ocean City, Wildwood, and Ventnor City are all included or not.
For New York, NY, I just need to know if the whole city local, I would assume, but New York, is setup completely different than most cities I've seen, with 5 boroughs in a city and it being fairly large with multiple area codes.
Also, all this would be the exact same at a Verizon or possibly others payphone as well as just a Verizon landline correct?

Same thing happened to me. It doesn't even matter if you ask explicitly for the weather in NYC.
I asked for the weather in "New York City" and got the results for New York, TX.
I then asked for the weather in "New York City, New York" and got the same results for New York, TX.
Than I asked "What is the weather today in New York City in the state of New York?" and got the weather for New York, TX.
I asked for "Manhattan, New York" and got the weather for TX.
But when I asked for the weather in Brooklyn... I got the weather for Brooklyn, OH.
    Pretty impressive.

    Hi Nick,
I'm sure you "could" just double sided tape it - but I would fear it interferes with the air flow around other components/out the back slot.  Plus, not sure the wires will reach, though they might be able to.
I used the NewerTechnologies Adaptadrive unit.  It works perfectly and holds the SSD firmly.  The little circuit board on the adapter just lines the SATA ports up perfectly with there they would be for a 3.5 inch drive.  Was super simple, and I know the SSD won't come loose behind my screen.  Be sure to get a full size adapatet like this.  The little blue ones OWC also sells don't have the length needed for Apple's mounting brackets.
Here's the link, and I'll attach a photo of it pre-install and post install with the temp sensor back on.

  • ME TV New York Added

Verizon has added ME TV New York for people who are in the new york/new jersey area where it is listed as channel 19 on the guide. ME TV New York has shows from the past like mission impossible, perry mason, hawaii five-o, gunsmoke, bonanza, the honeymooners, mash, the rockford files and the beverly hillbillies. Memorable entertainment television or ME TV as it is known to many is already available to people in other parts of the country and if it is not as of right now it will be soon. I mentioned in a previous post that ME TV was coming and now it is here for people in the tri-state area but there are going to be a lot more channel additions as i mentioned in that post starting in september.

    You would need the following:
    1. You will need to have a valid billing address in the country
    2. You will need a credit card with the same billing address
    3. You will need to be physically present in the country at the time of
    purchase

  • HT1933 New Yorker new sub will not download after 2 days 4G and Wireless

I have never had a problem getting anything to download, but yesterday I downloaded NewYorker app then one month sub and the sub downloaded the cover and table of contents and each page like Talk of the Town has a title but says waiting to download.  I use 4g but took to coffee shop to download and use their wireless but did not work.
I have not received a purchase email yet, it is listed as purchased on my Apple Account though.  The charge has not come in on my online credit card statement.
I have deleted app now, I don't want to fool with New Yorker if they don't have their act together.
I subscribe through Apple to NYTimes and Economist. Not a problem.  I have about 10 other apps that all work just fine and all have downloaded and updated just fine.
    Any suggestions.

I hear that it will stop restoring after 3 days, so if you can wait another day, to make total of three you should be OK and will not need to force anything.

  • New York Jets - How Did They Get That Name?

I remember the old New York Titans of the AFL, but then one day, they were called the Jets. How did they get that name (West Side Story?), and where did it come from?
    Rod, are you home?
    Hunt

hiya...hehe... was crying ...jets lost...boo hoo....
gotta admit ne pats defense and offense were just too good...couple turnovers and jets = dead ducks ( making that gargling sound in throat as they bit the dust ).
why jets name ??? dont know really...not definitetively...
My dad was into gymnastics pretty much entirely ( a little into figure skating ). not baseball or football. bowling a little as a " do it " sport, not a "watch it " sport. The only "watch it " sports us kids did ( only had 1 tv ) was gymnastics and skating olympic stuff mostly but some other competitions too.
Gymnastics is weird in a way...( as was my father ). It is extremely personal ( about beating your "self" ..doing better than you did " before" ).. very individualistic ...even though you are on a " team "... it's just points mostly for the team to win , accumulation of individual scores...  father was very anti weight lifting, very opinionated about these things to his kids... so even when I got into wrestling, for example, or football ..in high school, he was very critical of any weight lifting that was part of the practice and training. He " coached " or " taught " gymnastics on Saturdays at my high school in a sorta unofficial (unpaid ) position...so me and my brother got sorta hooked into that more than doing football, wrestling etc. In fact, we started doing gymnastics when we were like 1 year old.. and it is so stated in some newspaper clipping by howard cosell (when he was a newspaper columnist before radio ) interviewing my father after a ny athletic club gymnastic competition ( trials for olympics sorta thing )... " Yes, Howard, I have 3 children, and they are already doing floor excercises and some tumbling... kirk, age 3, rodney age 2, and susan age 1 .... "  that sorta thing.  We were famous !
We could roll on the floor with pet dog real good !
This gives you general idea how I never got into "watching" football seriously, or baseball...I am basically ( like my brother ) a sport idiot re: following football and baseball like normal american kids.  Of course I did follow favorite teams for a while in high school... ( oakland raiders were my favorite with a couple other teams kinda floating in and out of my interest ) but I have only been to 2 pro baseball game, never to any pro football game, and only 1 college football game ( army navy as guest of family who's son went to west point .. they got season tickets and tailgate spot etc ).
Baseball games were 1 polo grounds where the only thing I remember is having a hot dog and I dropped my plastic thing of mustard and for some stupid reason stomped on it... and it squirted mustard like it was shot from a canon onto this lady's leg ( stocking ).. and she yelled at me and I felt bad and said I was sorry and she tried to get it off but I think her leg was stained with mustard forever.
Other baseball game was yankee stadium box seat next to yankee dugout roof as guest of guy who's brother in law owns the boxes complete with free parking nearby and tickets to some yankee club after games.  fancy seats ( 4 of them ).  I put my beer on the roof of the yankee dugout, it was like right in front of me. I got a ball thrown to me by a yankee after pre-game practice ( as they came to dugout to start game ). Actually he faked me out at first...went to throw, I ( startled by his hand action ) put my hands up fast to catch.. but he didnt throw ( like faked me out )... but then as he disappeared under dugout roof his hand came up and flipped the ball right to me ( which of course I caught since I am so quick with my reactions due to rolling with dog when 2 years old ).
So thats my only baseball story of any interest. It was the game " after" the boston yankee game with the pine tar incident in boston with billy martin.. so this was the next day IIRC in ny with boston again... yankees won.  and didnt have to do tricky stuff to win ( like complain about pine tar ).  The mustard story doesn't get told often.
So now you know that I am a total idiot re: sports in general due to total immersion in gymnastics, and most of THAT was just doing it, not following particular athletes ( though of course some became sorta famous at the olympics etc ) We had high bar and parallel bars IN THE BACK YARD !  LOL... I once saw a friend try a giant swing ( we had no mat.. just grass ) and fly off and landed about 20 feet away ... he let go cause all the skin on his girly hands got ripped off as he was twirling around... goes to show you... be careful when trying new things.
His eyes had rolled up into his head so you could only see " white" for a little while... but then he came back to life ( whew ! ) .  We quit for the day doing gymnastics.
Sooo, in answer to your question.. given my idiocy about these matters.. the Jets ( from Titans at polo grounds and 1 season I think at the new Shea Stadium --where the METS were ) with change in ownership and all that going on... could have been from west side story ( cause I think there's a long history of some stadium dreams over on the west side of manhattan ( which would be a total nightmare for traffic by the way ) ).. and since it rhymes with METS maybe.. and also maybe because when you go to shea stadium all you can hear most of the time are GIANT JETS FLYING LOW OVERHEAD on way to and from LaGuardia Airport which is like 100 feet away from home base.
A lot of New Yorkers liked the Jets at first because Joe Namath go them to the superbowl and won, much to the surprise of everyone on earth and mars too..   but really because it was a ny stadium instead of NJ ( everyone in NY makes fun of people in NJ ).  The giants suffer for this cause a lot of people call them the NJ Giants. And now ( of course ) a lot of people call the Jets the NJ Jets too... since they left shea stadium ( which was a mess because they had to go on road games till the METS were done playing baseball...and then that stadium on the west side got blackballed again by a couple lawmakers in Albany ( they actually OWN the city and state, Sheldon Silver and some other guy ). Im not really up on that whole history of west side stadium but in part the cablevision guys who own madison sq garden dont want competition. They got it with the javits center for conventions but not for sports teams.. so I guess they're happy for now.
Now we got citi field and met life field and will probably rename the midtown tunnel " JP Morgan Tunnel " soon... but as I say, .... I don't go to any of these games and travel as little as possible so who cares.

  • I'm in New York, NY. Siri thinks I'm in New York, TX

I'm trying to ask Siri for a weather forecast. I say, "What's the weather forecast for today?" Siri tells me it's going to be 93 degrees, which is weird. That can't be right. I tap on the yahoo thing and I find out she's giving me the forecast for New York, TX instead of New York, NY. I try again, specifying "What's the weather for New York, New York?" Siri seems to understand because she tells me it's going to be nice in "New York City" today. But it's the same Texas forecast. My current location and home address are both in New York, NY. Also my weather widget in Notification Center is the correct location.
    Any ideas?

  • Since the most recent Firefox updates, I am having trouble with certain features on The New York Times website; I can no longer see certain weblog comments, or post comments, etc.

This question is admittedly a little complicated. The New York Times website has a number of weblog pages which include brief stories followed by space for readers to leave comments. You probably need to be a Times On-Line subscriber to really see what I'm talking about, but some examples would be this City Room blog: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/02/bloomberg-cancels-radio-talk-amid-furor-over-aides-resignation/ or this Arts Beat blog: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/01/theater-talkback-remembering-jerry-leiber-a-reluctant-pioneer-of-the-jukebox-musical/
Since the most recent Firefox updates, when I view these pages, which traditionally have a number of reader comments at the bottom of the Times' story (or at least a space to leave a comment), I can no longer see the comments. There's simply empty. blank space. I know that the comments are there; if I open Internet Explorer and log on to the same page, the comments are suddenly visible. I don't understand where this problem has come from. I haven't noticed whether I'm missing seeing anything on other websites yet.
I also cannot post comments on other parts of the Times website; while the pages dedicated to story-specific reader comment seem to load correctly and the space to type my comment does appear, I can't actually submit the comment. Repeated pressing of the "submit" icon has no effect. Once again, this works normally in IE.
For the record, in the past week, I have changed my computer's anti-virus software from McAfee to Norton 360. I run Windows XP. If there's any another information I can provide, please advise, as I vastly prefer running Firefox to IE.

If the CD absolutely requires that old version, then it is basically obsolete. However, it might work with the current version ... have you installed the current version of Adobe Reader, and if so what does it say when you try to use the CD?

I'm visiting new York(USA) for work on Sunday, just wanted to know if i can buy an un locked iphone from the apple store or not, since i'm not a resident, to the record we don't have an apple store at my country.

You can buy an unlocked iPhone at any of the 5 Apple stores in NYC. All are open on Sunday. Note a couple of things, however:
US iPhone 5's will work on 3G in the rest of the world, but not on LTE because the US phones use different channels than other countries
Be sure you say "unlocked", not "no contract"
If it breaks it must be returned to a US store for repair, and if shipped to Apple it must be from and to a US address

I can't seem to print directly from apps like the new York times. Print is not an option from the pulldown menu. Print to my hp printer works  fine from safari and email though and from some other apps. Do some apps not permit printing? That doesn't right.

You can ask the NY Times why not.
Standard behavior is that Airprint always works with iBooks, Mail, Photos, and Safari.  Apps are up to their author.
