Was iPhoto designed to be useless, or did it just turn out that way?

I put my iPhone in the cradle. iPhoto starts. I dismiss the welcome screen. I have an album in iPhoto's MOBILEME GALLERY called "Dog" with pictures of my dog. There are 2 photos in the album. I have about 5 new ones on the iPhone. I select and drag them to the album. A plus sign appears indicating that copying is taking place. I wait a while. I click on the album. Only the original 2 are there.
I click on the iPhone in the sidebar. I click "Import All". I get a dialog informing me of duplicates, asking me what to do. I click "Don't Import" and check the box "apply to all". None of my new pictures get imported.
It seems to me I'd be better off manually dragging the pictures off the iPhone into folders of my choosing and filing them as I see fit.
Am I doing it all wrong or is it not working?

But when I drag and drop something and a plus sign, , pops up, that indicates to me that something is being copied to the location that I'm dragging the icon to.
The plus sign actually means that the item is being dragged, not that it is getting to its target.
When I click the "import" button to import pictures into an album where they don't exist and are told they are duplicates, there is a malfunction.
This may be an issue of terminology, but you cannot import to an existing album. You can import to the Library and if there are duplicates there you will get a warning. However, if you're getting dupes reported and there aren't any you may have a damaged library file. Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
I'm used to having access to the actual files in a folder and being able to rename, copy and move them at will without learning the ins and outs of another piece of software that manages them for me.
If you want to manage your photo files and not your photographs thenwhy are you using iPhoto? Surely not just to sync them to your iPhone. You don't to use iPhoto for this. You can sync them with your iPhone from any folder you want on the HD. Perhaps you need to learn the ins and outs of iTunes.

  • Can someone please tell me a simple but effective method for burning a slideshow to DVD? Now that the connection between iPhoto and iDVD no longer exists, I can't figure out a way to get there with an acceptable quality result.

Can someone please tell me a simple but effective method for burning a slideshow to DVD? Now that the connection between iPhoto and iDVD no longer exists, I can't figure out a way to get there with an acceptable quality result.

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

Before you go through that trouble open About this Mac > More Info... > System Report > Audio and see if the system actually knows it has a microphone.  Then you can look into Applications > Utilities >  Audio MIDI Setup and see if the microphone is there, select it and make sure the sliders are set to full. Then in System Preferences look for Sound > Input and make sure it shows up there and the sliders are at least half way up. If none of that works do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.
then go through the process of looking for the microphone again as the reset may reenable the mic.

  • IPhoto '08 Importing & Events problem. Did I just waste $79 on iLife '08..?

Hey...I would love feedback from the group as I'm trying to determine if I just waste $79 on iLife '08.
When I import photos, they don't seem to be broken into Events as they should be. I have tried to different scenarios and gotten vastly different result, with neither being the desired result.
    1) Imported 1,500 pictures that were spread out across 94 folders by dragging the top level folder into my photos library. Import into iLife '08 resulted in the pics being distributed into the same number of untitled Events as folders.
    2) Imported 1,500 pictures that were all lumped together in one folder. Imported pictures showed up in iLife '08 as one big Event.
My preference settings are for Events to be broken up based on 'eight hour gaps'. I thought this would result in a new Event being created in my library whenever an eight hour gap in picture timestamps was detected, but neither scenario I tried broke the photos up this way.
I bought iLife '08 for this very function that they heavily advertised and it doesn't seem to be working as I thought it would or as it was demonstrated to do. As I missing something here...input will be greatly appreciated.

    Big Sid:
Even though you've set events to an 8 hour gap did you click on the check box in the Events preference pane to apply this criteria to photos imported from the Finder as see here .
Otherwise each folder of photos will be imported as one event.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • HT1040 I cannot upload my iphoto book to the apple store for printing, it cuts out half way through the download.  What can I do?

I have made a photo book which is ready now to send to the apple store for printing but half way through the download process it cuts out unexpectadly and will not send.  I have printed many books from my computer through Iphoto and have never had this problem before.  What could be the problem?  I have checked for updates and installed all of them.  Turned my computer off and then on again.  But still keeps doing this.  Help ?

Apple's servers are very busy today, right after the big WWDC conference and the announcement of new products.
download process it cuts out unexpectadly and will not send
The reason for this may be that the book contains photos that cannot be rendered. Have you checked the preview of your book? Does the pdf look correct?
    See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040
If that is not the problem, check your network and your security settings. If you are using a Firewall or Antivirus filter, disable it temporarily.

  • My IOS 8 was updated to 8.1 and it turns out that my internet is getting slower especially when i'm watching some movies and videos..I have no problem with my local internet.

I updated my IOS 8 to 8.1 and my net getting slower. Why is that?

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?
    Thanks again!

  • I downloaded an app that said free, but later it turns out that I have to pay for it! Why did that happen!?!?

    I don't get it!!!

Without knowing what app you are talking about, no one here can explain what happended. We can however, make certain assumptions.
Many, free games include "in-app" purchases.... items that you can buy within the game that let you unlock other levels, or use to enhance the game experience. Some free games are lite versions and if you agree to upgrade the game, you may have to pay for the upgrade.
So like I said  without knowing what game you are talking about and what you might have done during game play, we can only guess. But .... You should have been required to enter your password when you made any purchases - unless you had already entered your password for another reason - maybe to download a free app perhaps.
Once you enter your password, you can download continuously without having to re-enter the password for a 15 minute period of time so if that's the case, only you would know what happened. If that's not the case, more details will be needed from you for a further explanation.

  • I have created a .m4v file from iPhoto and would like to share it with someone else knowing that the file is quiet large (86 Mo), i used to share file with mobileme, how Can I do that with iCloud ? or another way....

In iphoto, I have create a diaporama which I exported to itunes as a m4v file. I would like to share this file with someone but it is too big to send it via email (84 Mo). This file is now in my films in itunes. Is there a way to share it via icloud.
I used to share files using mobileme which I cannot use anymore.
    Thanks for your help,
    Eric

How recently did you switch?  If it's less than 60 days, then Verizon simply reinstates your previous account.  The fact that you were on the EDGE plan and mailed the devices back, and they apparently are somewhere in the system, could cause complications, and it might just work out that you just go back on the same plan and they set you up with the same devices.  I'm not sure how it will go - but since you are still being billed for the devices...

  • When I download pictures from my camera, they turn out a nice big size in iPhoto; other pictures that have been e-mailed to me or imported from older libraries/other computers show up small.  Why is this, and how can I make them all the larger size?

When I download pictures from my digital camera into iPhoto, they turn out a nice large size (usually almost the full screen), but when somebody e-mails me pictures and I import them into iPhoto, or when I transfer old photos from an old library into my new iPhoto library, they turn out very small--not exactly thumbnail-size, but too small to use for calendars or photo books.  I don't know much about computers, so I don't know how this happened.  Also, I can't find any discernible pattern to why this happens with some pictures and not others--ie: what I described above is usually true, but I have had e-mailed photos or old photos turn out the way I want them, which is in the larger size in iPhoto.  Why is this happening, and how can I make all the pictures the larger size?

Some mail programs, including Apple Mail, can reduce the size of images that are attached to a message. It's happening at the sender's end, and all you can do is ask the sender for a larger image.

  • I have a cheap broken audio jack that was meant for aesthetic purposes and I can't get it out?

The best thing I could do was use a hot glue gun and pull it out that way. You could use pliers but it is so cheap it broke again. So now it's stuck in there.

You could consider taking iPhone to an Apple store genius bar to see if they can assist you.

  • DId I just crush my CPU?

    Hi all.
I just finished installing the Zalman AlCu 7000 (no A) to my mobo. Problem is, the system won't post , and I get the annoying long beep associated with CPU problem . The thing is, being the lazy bastard that I am, I didn't use the Zalman backplate. I removed the stock CPU bracket and used the stock long screws to secure the zalman to the CPU. Thing is, there was no limit to how tight those screws would turn , and I'm afraid I sort of... crushed my CPU .
I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I got some damaged part here, but I'm not sure if it's my mobo CPU socket, or the CPU itself.
    Any input?

I have the same exact problem.  Except I didn't get it by crushing my cpu, more like... ripping it out of the socket.  AS5 is like glue and when I tried to remove my heatsink from the cpu, I just ripped out the cpu with the lock still on.  I got some bent pins, but after I straighted that out... the computer wouldn't boot anymore and it gave me a long continous beep.
I tried clearing cmos, reseating memory, didn't work.  I called MSI tech support and they said the long continous beep was due to a memory error.  Only other thing I could think of was... maybe the on-die memory controller is messed up.  Turns out that wasn't the case, AMD (good service) just called me today and told me that my cpu is up and up.
So now I'm wondering what the heck is wrong with my computer.  I don't think my ram would've just all of a sudden conked out after a month of solid running.  (Corsair 1024XL)
    Anyone help?

  • I am trying to upload my Iphoto library, but I just got told that I dont have enough free space... its only 60GB of images, on a HD disk that still have 460 GB free...

I am trying to upload my Iphoto library from a reinstalled OSX, but I just got told that I dont have enough free space... its only 60GB of images, on a HD disk that still has 460 GB free...

If you correctly stated that you are importing an iPhoto library into another one it will not work as TD said
The only way to do it is to drag the old library intact as a single entity to the pictures folder of the new system and then launch iPhoto
There is no importing, dragging and dropping or uploading involved

We have no way of knowing. Maybe you did or maybe you didn't. If you don't tell us what version you have, how could we know?

  • IPhoto Slow, Blank thumbs, double import, did I mention S L O W

iPhoto Slow, Blank thumbs, double import, did I mention S L O W? iMac G5, 768 Ram, I loaded and EDITED 500 photos, went to export. Found thousands of images in machine I never loaded. Attempted to export some photos to flickr (before finding they had a fix). Nothing.
So I did, what any MS user would do, I reinstalled iPhoto. Now there are 500 empty frames, some with ghosts, and 2 sets of newly imported fotos. Tried to do some deleting, but no benefit.
    Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear you're having problems like this - I have 768 MB of RAM on a G4, and I have seen no slowdown with 13,000+ photos.
Could you be more specific with how you arrived at the problem? Here's some questions that come to mind:
    - What kind of images? JPG? RAW? approximately what size and resolution?
    - Blank thumbs are usually a result of things being moved around in the iPhoto library, and the iphoto database loses track of the paths. The golden rule is, never mess with the organization of your iPhoto library from within the Finder.
    - Usually if an application is that slow it is running into problems, so if you launch Console, and then iPhoto, you may see new messages that may indicate a problem.
    - The thousands of images in the machine, that you never loaded, what are they? Are they images that were in your Pictures folder? Did someone else use the computer?
    - What do you mean by double import? If you leave your camera or card reader connected, you will be shown the screen where iPhoto is ready to import. If you choose to import again, you could double-import.
    - If iPhoto finds photos at the root level of its iPhoto Library folder, it may try to import them. If interrupted or if the application is forced to abandon the import, it may try again on relaunch.
    - How did the export to flickr fail? Was it with the blank thumbnails selected?
Maybe information that could answer the above questions, could help me or someone on the discussion board help you figure out what's going on.
