Was library sharing disabled in iTunes 6.0.1.3?

I'm no longer able to see other users' libaries (on my network) since I upgraded to 6.0.1.3. I know others who have the same problem, even though we have "Look for shared music" checked in Preferences. Users with older versions of iTunes can see other libraries without a problem. Anyone know what the problem is here? Is there some security built in to the new version that prevents sharing? Or limits it somehow?

Well, I've noticed this problem at work (while using my work laptop on a network with other users -- some who have iTunes 5 and some iTunes 6) and at home (using a completely different laptop).
At first I thought it was a configuration problem on my work laptop, but now I'm thinking it has something to do with iTunes itself.
The weird thing is: People at work who use iTunes 5.0 can see the shared drives without a problem. Those with 6.0 cannot. So this problem is replicating itself in two completely different environments -- leading me to believe it's something in iTunes 6. Hmm....

  • Library Sharing blocked by firewall despite settings

Just updated to iTunes 10.5 on my "first Intel generation" iMac, which runs 10.5.8.
Library sharing worked previously (iTunes 10.4.something), but now my other Macs and iDevices can 'see' that the library is there to be shared, but cannot access any content. The appfirewall.log shows:
    Firewall[42]: Deny iTunes connecting from 10.0.1.5:55709 uid = 0 proto=6
whenever I try to access it from another machine/device.
Meanwhile, the Firewall settings in the Security pane of System Preferences show iTunes.app with "Allow incoming connections".
    I have tried:
    - adding and removing iTunes.app from the Firewall list of apps
    - restarting the system
    - turning off library sharing within iTunes and turning it back on, including re-naming the library
It continues to fail the same way every time.
Has anyone else encountered (and hopefully solved) this problem?

Yes I have been struggling with this for months.
I have concluded that the firewall is broken and simply needs to be avoided, turn it off, don't use it.  Adding iTunes to the allowed list should work but it doesn't.  Look at your logs, you'l see the many instances of the firewall blocking itues access even though you have specifically told the firewall to allow it.
Annoyances like this destroy the Apple myth: "It just works."
Scared of opperating without a firewall turned on?  Get Lil Snitch and use that instead.  The Apple Firewall doesn't work anyway, we've seen that as described above.  So how can you be sure it is blocking any nasties? You can't. Turn it off and your problem is solved.

  • Itunes 9 Sharing Library when Sharing Disabled

    Hello,
I believe I have found a bug in the new iTunes 9 Library sharing feature.
    I have 4 Macs - all running OS X 10.6.1 and iTunes 9.01
3 are setup for Home Sharing with:
    * 'Look for Shared Libraries' enabled
    * 'Share my Library on my local network' enabled
The fourth Mac is setup for Home sharing as follows:
    - 'Look for Shared Libraries' enabled
    - 'Share my Library on my local network' DISABLED
However, despite the 4th Mac having sharing disabled, all other Macs are fully able to access the library on that 4th Mac
To test further I have disabled the 'Share my Library...' option on the other Macs and those 'disabled' libraries also continue to be advertised and accessible.
I have rebooted, enabled and disabled the various options etc but the behaviour is consistent across all 4 macs no matter what I try.
Bottom line - it appears impossible to disable sharing once enabled
If anyone has advice how to report this please let me know. I have screen shots I can share if needed.

Ummm... Maybe this is actually a 'Design Feature' that I've found the answer to myself
Looking at this more it appears that 'Library Sharing' as set in the iTunes Preferences and 'Home Sharing' are similar but completely separate functions.
Home Sharing is either On or Off - the granularity of viewing other libraries but not sharing your own doesn't appear to be an option. And it is enabled and disabled from the advanced menu with no settings in preferences.
This separation of the 2 features - while it makes sense to make it possible to enable the 2 features simultaneously - was not immediately intuitive to me.
Would be great to see Apple somehow clarify this in future versions.

  • How come I do not see "shared" in my iTunes library.  To my knowledge, everything is turned on to do so.

I do believe I have exhausted all avenues to get the "shared" to show up in my iTunes library.  Just trying to share music between two users on the same Apple computer.

My daughter used to come upstairs to do dishes -turn on my Mac in OS 10.4 and open file sharing in preferences - go to nework in preferences turn on appletalk- type in her user name and password open her drive on my Mac and go to Itune and play her music. In leopard-.  It's all done in Itunes itself, not the library Your Itune preferences should have a sharing folder to click on. If by chance your parental file in Itunes preferences has file sharing disabled, that would stop file sharing from being avalable in the Itune prererence sharing folder.

  • My i phone 4 got locked by my small sister plus my laptop was formatted i dont have itunes back up to unlock thei phone what should i do i am puzzeled?? i tried passcode it says i phone is disabled .. some one help please

My i phone 4 got locked by my small sister plus my laptop was formatted i dont have itunes back up to unlock thei phone what should i do i am puzzeled?? i tried passcode it says i phone is disabled .. some one help please

Options for when an iOS device gets locked because of forgotten passcode:
Restore (and reset passcode) on your device by connecting it to the last computer to which it was connected:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414  ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/20025416 - "A restore erases the iPod. If you restore from backup the iPod will be like it was IF the iTunes library includeds [sic] all the synced media like apps and music since those are not included in the backup.")
If you cannot connect it to the computer to which the device was last connected (or the device was never connected to a computer) you will have to use recovery mode to completely reset the device, losing all data:
iOS: Unable to update or restore - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 - recovery mode (e.g., cannot connect to computer last used to sync device, iTunes still asks for a password)
If none of the above work, try:
    DFU mode: http://osxdaily.com/2010/12/04/ipad-dfu-mode/

  • 2  Mac's sharing the same itunes library?

2 Mac’s sharing the same itunes library?
I would like to use the same existing itunes music folder I have on a external drive, connected to one of my machines?
I can share without any problem the drive from my laptop and can share/view the other machines itunes music through itunes on my laptop, but can not set the music folder on my laptops Itunes to be the same as on the machine that the external drive is connected to.
I have heard and seen this operation before but how do I do it ?

You lost me on which machine is which and where the library is stored. If the library is on an external drive connected to Computer 1 and you want to access it on Computer 2 then:
    1. Connect to computer 1 using the Finder on Computer 2 and mount the external drive
    2. Open iTunes on Computer 2
    3. Select iTunes -> Preferences
    4. Select the Advanced tab
    5. Select Change next to iTunes Music Folder Location
    6. Navigate to the folder where the music is stored.
    7. Quit iTunes
    8. Open iTunes with the OPTION key held down.
    9. When prompted navigate to the Library file on Computer 1.
That should do it. As always, back up the Library file before you start this process. I would also recommend you back it up regularly as if you have a network issue while accessing the library file remotely, it could corrupt it.

  • HT1203 iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer - I tried to use the instructions to configure 2 different windows users sharing the same iTunes library.  I could not get this to work per the instructions.

I tried to configure 2 windows users accounts using a single library per the instructions in HT1203.  My iTunes library is on an external drive.  I cannot get this to work.  Any suggestions?

To give other users read-only access to your iTunes library, use the Sharing features of iTunes. Sharing works over the local network as well as on the same computer. See the built-in help for details.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support article linked below.
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
There is a way to share the library without moving it to a secondary volume. If you really need to do that, ask for instructions.

I recently purchased a new PC. I had backed-up my old computer on Carbonite, so I was able to transfer my iTunes library to the new computer when I downloaded my info from Carbonite, but the playlists are gone. Is there a way to restore my playlists?
Most of my playlists are on my iPod. If I use my iPod to transfer, will the songs double in my library? Also, how do I do this?
Thank you for any & all info you can provide!
    Julie

If you had backed up and restored your library properly you should have ended up with the playlists too. Did you import the media folder from the backup drive into a new library rather than restoring the entire iTunes folder?

  • ITunes Library shared between computers?

I have an iMac (OSX Lion) with two user accounts that are both sharing the same iTunes Library.  We now have a Macbook Air with the same user accounts.  The Macbook Air obviously does not have the same hard drive space and I therefore did not choose to migrate the library to the Air...What is the best way for each user to access the shared iTunes folder from the iMac?  I would like to do this while on the same LAN as well as remotely if possible.
I assume that simply setting iTunes up for "Sharing" will handle the local area question, but what about while we are away from home?  I assume that iCloud with iTunes Match would be the only answer?

Rented movies cannot be shared between computers. They can only exist on a single device at a time, and can only be moved from a computer to a player such as an iPod, iPhone or Apple TV. You cannot move a rental from one computer to another.
And yes, actually they do say that, in the Rentals FAQ, among other places.

  • Aperture - Album from Shared Library Not Appearing in iTunes

I have a recurring problem which is making Aperture downright useless.
I operate a shared Aperture library (shared between 2 users on the same iMAC) which resides in the 'Shared' Users folder. Obviously we cannot have the same library open at the same time -that's no problem. I have set the sharing properties for the library contents and folders to Read and Write for both of us.
The problem is that when I add photos and create a new Project ad Album to put them in (not worried about the other user at the moment), these don't show up in the Aperture album or project list in Photos in iTunes to sync to my iPad or iPhone.
I have this very minute added a new album, closed Aperture and made sure its written to disk. Then I have closed the iTunes app and made sure it has quit.
Then when iTunes loads up again and I connect my device - the library and project do not appear in the items to sync.
This happens all of the time and it's making Aperture pretty pants. If the only resolution is to rebuild thumbnails, rebuild XML file etc or any more of that - then its not fit for purpose.
Has anybody a long term permanent fix for this?
It's seriously doing my head in!

Bumping this up as it seems that nobody has any idea.
