Was updating to 5.0.1 on iphone 3gs and now it wont recongize sim card

I was updating at iphone 3gs (8gig) to 5.0.1 after it was turned off and it restarted. it no longer recongized the sim card. What can I do now?

It was not. I bought i a few months ago for my fatherinlaw and I have only put some apps on it before trying to updated the iOS to 5.0.1. It was working fine before but once it restarted from updating to 5.0.1 it is now in a base mode of asking what language, turn on location services and for it to go on wifi. but when I attach it by wire to itunes it says the sim card is not installed.

Was this officially unlocked legally by the phone carrier that the phone was locked to?
If not it sounds like the phone was hacked to unlocked and when you updated the phone it locked backed up again.

Given the state your device is in you have already erased your old stuff. You have an image on the screen that says, "Connect to iTunes." That's what the image means. So you will need iTunes on your computer.

Follow these steps to attempt to resolve the issue.
iPhone: Troubleshooting No SIM

Toggle Airplane mode On and Off.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Check for a carrier settings update. Tap Settings > General > About. If an update is available, a prompt will appear.
Remove the SIM Card and verify that it is a valid, carrier-manufactured SIM. Also verify that it is not damaged, worn, or modified. Then reinsert it.
Restore the iPhone.

this happened to me with my iPhone 4. I researched the problem and found this :
"The reason this happens is because every time a downloaded app is opened it checks for your itunes password for validation that you are authorized to open that app (as it may contain personal info). From time to time the iphone 'forgets' your itunes password. You can fix the missing password by syncing the iphone with itunes or downloading an app from the app store and entering your password that way.”
And to fix it, all I did was download a new app, or delete a current one, I used Facebook, and re-download it.

Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears? If that doesn't work, try resetting the network settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings.
If that fails, you may possibly have damaged the SIM. Verizon will need to give you a new one.

In the iPhone backup. Right click on the phone in iTunes and choose "Restore from Backup".
