Was using Outlook Express (OS9) - should I switch to Mail or Entourage?

I've still been using OS9 for my email tasks (on one computer), and running OS X on another, because I am so used to Outlook Express, and I have over a 1 GB database of 8 years of email messages that I need to maintain (for my work).
I'm finally looking at options for dumping this and doing everything on OS X (currently I have 10.3.9, but I will soon update to 10.4.x).
I've been investigating Mail, and I imported all my messages from OE into it (took about 20 hours). I've started looking into it and, perhaps it's just that I am unused to it, but it seems to lack certain features I always use, such as the ability to edit messages that are already sent or received. The folder (mailbox) management seems a bit clunky at first glance. But again, maybe if I dive in I'll find ways to do what I want.
I've also realized I own Office X Entourage (never used it), and as I write this, I'm importing all my OE data into it.
I generally really like Apple apps, and detest MS apps. It goes against my grain to not migrate to Mail at this point, but I must admit it seems as if Entourage is just a reworked, very familiar looking Outlook Express (with more stuff), and it would be so much easier for me to go there.
Can anyone tell me why I should use Mail, and not Entourage, at this point? Is Mail in 10.4.x much improved from 10.3?
Thanks!

Mail in 10.4 is definitely a little better, but still can't directly edit messages, though you can redirect them and edit when you redirect a messsage by using Send Again in the Message menu.
Mail has a distinct advantage over Entourage in that it does not put all your eggs in one basket. Entourage stores every piece of address book, e-mail, and calendar information in a single database file in your Documents -> Microsoft Users data in your Home folder. Mail separates mailboxes into their own files. Apple's Addressbook which Mail has access to, has its own separate files. And Apple's iCal also has its own separate files. The database of Entourage can get corrupt very easily when it becomes large. While Microsoft includes a database repair program, I found it does not always work.
While it means backing up Mail/Addressbook/iCal requires a little more navigating of specific folders, you will have a much more reliable backup than using Entourage. I suggest for someone going to Mac OS X, to consider cloning for backup, as I recommend here:

  • Can't send E-mails using Outlook Express on WRT300N

Hello, I searched through the forums to find problems similar to mine, but everyone had a different router than mine, plus none of the solutions worked for me.
I just purchaced and installed my router yesterday. Since the install, I have not been able to send e-mails using Outlook Express, but I do recieve e-mails. I am using the WRT300N Wireless-N Router.
Trying to get my local news service up and running, and right now, e-mail communication is vital........
    Thanks.

Well of course, but the error message says socket error, which doesn't tell how to fix it. Even the Outlook Express help site doesn't give any suggestions to fix anything, other than "Your internet connection has failed," which is not the problem.
To the disable firewalls suggestion: I did try disabling my firewalls and all of my virus/ e-mail scan software just to check it out. The thing is, I don't see how my Windows XP Firewall, or anything I've been using could be a problem. Right now, because of the error all my sent e-mails are stuck in the outbox, when I disconnect my router and connect everything back up leaving the router out of the picture, the e-mails are sent out as normal. This problem only occurs with the router connected.
I also need to stream live audio, and I've heard it's a pain using a wireless router...
Thanks for the suggestions, hopefully someone will provide the winning suggestion so I don't have to call customer service!

I'm not sure what you mean. Are mail links not opening Outlook Express? If so, see [[Changing the e-mail program used by Firefox]]

  • Using Outlook express mail and system 10.9, sending attachments

I have a new Mac, operating system 10.9. Trying to use Outlook Express Mail from work, I am unable to send attachments. Thanks

One thing in there jumps out - the long time taken to connect to the internet after NetProtect was installed. McAfee is a notorious resource hog and that behaviour is typical of the symptoms which persuaded me and others to look for another AV. Microsoft Security Essentials has a light touch and many would recommend it, though there are several other effective, free AVs available. If you do uninstall NetProtect you should make sure to run the McAfee Removal Tool also.
I would advise you to get NetProtect out of the way and return with an update for advice on the email issues.

  • Sync error message about mail client - using Outlook Express, wants Outlook

I keep getting a message that "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client"
Outlook Express IS set as my default mail client, both on my computer and on the iTunes screen.
I use Calendar on the iPhone, but do not have sync requested on iTunes for this function.
I do have Outlook on my computer, but do not use it (don't need calendar function at home, but do like to have it on my iPhone since I carry it with me)

I'm having a similar problem. "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client." (iTunes 7.6.1.9)
I sync my contacts with Yahoo! (not Outlook).
I was syncing my calendar with Outlook. This was working just fine, but when I started to get the error above, I have tried turning off the calendar sync. No help there.
I am not syncing any email accounts via iTunes.
Anyone have any suggestions? Given that I'm not syncing with Outlook I don't understand the error. Thunderbird is my default mail client and I shouldn't have to change the system defaults to work around this bug.

  • I can, I can't get my address book to snyc with my ipad2.  I'm using Outlook express 2004.  I followe the steps in itunes, but still no contacts.  Any suggestions?

Can't get my address book to sync to IPAD2.  Using Outlook Express 2004.  I followed the steps in Itunes, but still not contacts.  Any suggestions?

Mine is doing the exact same thing, and nobody on any of these threads has had any luck fixing it yet, so far as I can tell. iSync is worthless since it simply won't see the ipod and basically is not used at all now as .mac is done through its own preference window. What did work for me, and was quite easily done, was to just open your ipod through the finder and delete the vcard data in the contacts folder. Export your contacts from address book as a vcard to that contacts folder on your ipod, and it all works fine.
Still won't sync...but at least this only takes a minute to do. I'd like to actually fix it though.

  • How can I get the Ask Me widget in Captivate 5 to use Outlook Express?

I want to use the Ask Me widget, but I have a customer that doesn't have Microsoft Outlook for their employees. They use Outlook Express as their email client. I have asked them to open Outlook Express when they are in the CBT and click the Ask Me button, but it gives them an error message that says "could not perform the operation because the default mail client is not properly installed."
Is there any way to have it recgonize Outlook Express as their default mail client?

    Hi there
I'd be checking to see how a basic MailTo: function works on the affected PC. Just visit a web page that has a clickable link that opens email. Click the link and observe the behavior. You may find yourself surprised.

  • How do i set up an e-mail account on my ipad 2 using outlook express 6

i'm having problems receiving and sending e-mail on my ipad 2. My existing e-mail account on my windows pc is using outlook express 6. I've entered all the pop settings but nothing happens

No error messages or anything? If your OE is still running and is using POP, there won't be any email for you to retrieve with your iPad because OE has downloaded the email to your computer. To sync email between your computer and your iPad you need to use IMAP settings on both your computer and iPad, not POP.

  • Transfering Outlook Express Address Book to OS X mail

    Hi Folks,
Have finally made the leap from OS 9 to OS X.
    That was the easy part.
Now, how to successfully tranfer my 700+items Outlook Express Address Book into OS X mail? I'm about at my wits end. I've thus far managed to transfer the lot of them into Microsoft 'entourage' X. Whew! I still can't figure out how to transfer them into the OS X email program. I need access to those names/email addresses ASAP. It's vital to my work. Help!
    Thanks much in advance.
    Namaskara,
    David M.

I'm a newbie, but I think this may work:
Since Mail uses the addresses stored in Mac's Address Book app, open AB. Go to File/Import and select LDIF as the type of file you wish to import. Locate and click on the OE address book filename in the window that appears. It is most probably located in the Documents folder. Highlight the filename and click Open. The contents of this file will now appear in AB, and will then be accessible from Mail.
Let us know if it works.

I'm having problems with excessive email usage on my iphone 4/ios 7. Just noticed that it (settings/usage) was using 900+ mb. I deleted all my mail, deleted the mail account, turned the phone off and back on, downloaded any remaining mail on the server to Outlook on my computer, and it still says it's using 661 mb. My ipad uses a fraction of that.
Background: I recently (December) bought an ipad and set up icloud for contacts and calendar, but NOT mail. My email provider is Verizon. I use computer, iphone, and ipad to check my email; eventually I download it from the server using Outlook on the computer and then delete any remaining emails from the phone and ipad. I can't find info on this problem anywhere.

    Howdy there COUGAR444,
It sounds like your iPad all of a sudden seems to be restarting out of no where. If you haven't called AppleCare yet, I would start with quitting either the app that seems to be causing the issue, or all the apps if a single doesn't seem to be the culprit.
iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If the issue persists, backup your device to iTunes, then restore it as new and verify that it works.
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    Sterling
