WAS640 ABAP+Java Kernel Upgrade
Hi all,
i have an installation of was640 abap+java on Winnt and MSSQL.
Trying to upgrade abap kernel with SAPEXE40. As usual kernel setted under SYS/EXE/RUN but i found two more directories with same contents:
sys/exe/uc/nti386 and SCS01/exe
Should i have to upgrade all these contents? when i will upgrade the java part some of those contents will be overwritten?
thanks a lot.
Fabio
Hello Srinivas,
As of now, the JSPM cannot be used to apply the ABAP Support packages and it has to be applied separately using the SPAM/SINT. So, I believe the first option mentioned by you is the right way to go ahead.

Hi,
I am planning to deploy SPS12 against solution manager system (ABAP+JAVA).
But I have one quick question on Kernel Upgrade unicode system..
SPS 12 Minimum Kernel Patch level should be 102, we are at 95 (NW2004s/AIX 5.3)
Please suggest me the best approach :
1)))
1. ABAP Kernel Upgrade
2. IGS upgrade
3. Import ABAP Support Packages
4.Upgrade JSPM Patch
5.Deploy Java support packages via JSPM
2)))
1.Upgrade JSPM Patch
2.Kernel Upgrade using JSPM
3.Deploy Java support packages via JSPM
4.Import ABAP support packages
I heard that JSPM can import ABAP support packages, is this true (for SPS12)??
Please advice the best and quick approach at step by step at high level.

ABAP+Java Kernel and only Java Kernel
Hi Friends,
Is there any difference in ABAP+Java Kernel and only Java Kernel?
Can we use the kernel for above both from the same location as below?
1#
Support Packages and Patches> Additional Components> SAP Kernel> SAP KERNEL 64-BIT UNICODE> SAP KERNEL 6.40 64-BIT UNICODE
Following Files
DB Dependent - ORACLE
SAPEXEDB_175-20000227.SAR
DBATL640O92_44-20000227.SAR
Database Independent
SAPEXE_175-20000226.SAR
Assuming above SAR files contain R3trans, R3load, tp ,... also.
2#
As per my knowledge SAP has given one more path to download J2EE SP's which contains Kernel and J2EE Support Packages.
http://service.sap.com/patches --> Support Package and Patches -> Entry by Application Group -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP NetWeaver 04 -> Entry by Component -> Application Server Java -> SAP J2EE Engine 6.40 -> J2EERT19_0-10001982.SAR/J2EERT20_0-10001982.SAR (OS Independent) and CTRLDB219_0-20000114.SAR(OS Dendependent)
What is the difference between above two kernels?
1# contains R3trans, R3load, tp ...etc which is exclusively used by ABAP Stack related functions. The startsap script used here would check R3trans -d authentication successful before starting database and then only it starts the database from sidadm. I observed OPS$ users available in only ABAP schema SAPSID but not available in SAPSIDDB. If I use the kernel downloaded from 1# for Java Stack only system, startsap would fail as R3trans authentication fail as there is no ABAP schema in Java systems.
This applies well for ABAP+JAVA or only ABAP based systems.
If I use only JAVA Stack based system can I use the kernel downloaded from 1# . What is the kernel and SP available in 2#? Is this also contains the same kernel given in 1# or it is different. I also observed in JAVA they are not calling Kernels by Patch No like 154, 175... they call it by SP19. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Did anyone come accross this type if issue? I would appreciate if anyone can clarify my questions given above.
My main target is to have clear strategy for ABAP+JAVA, ABAP, JAVA kernels to avoid mess up. Which one to download? What is best practice? Differences?
Thanks and Regards
PrasadHi Sacha,
Thank a lot for your answer I am clear now. Before rewarding points to you.
I have final question.
You mean that there is not seperate kernel for Java Stack Systems.. When we apply SP11 or SP19 by default it applies Kernel and also support packages w.r.t the SP. Do we have option to seperate Kernel and Support package while applying SP's for Java System?
If we take for example SAP NW 2004 (WAS 640) latest kernel is 175 (I mean ABAP+JAVA). If I want to know the latest kernel for Java Stack system, Do I need to say it is at level SP19 or check the sapwebdisp -V (Resepctive patch level)?
For ABAP system we check disp+work -V to get the source kernel version. How to justify the source kernel version for Java System?
As per SAP Note: 710914 - Upgrading the J2EE Engine Startup Framework after applying SP for Java System, Do we need to upgrade J2EE Startup Framework?
Thanks and Regards,
Prasad -
Hi,
I have installed solution manager 4.0 with a java instance.
i want to upgrade the system's kernel.
how do i upgrade an abap+java kernel - is it the same like upgrading a regular kernel?
i'm running a unicode system.I just completed patching a SOL MAN 4. SP2 to SP6. Best way to download SP's is from sp-stacks site ( https://service.sap.com/sp-stacks ). It will give you all the SP's required, including Kernel, ABAP and J2EE. Kernal and ABAP patches are applied normal way. However, for JAVA, you need to use the JSPM. Also, dont forget to download the XML file of the download, it is required by the JSPM to patch the java engine.
We did run into some errors during the ABAP patch import, so make sure that you have good backup incase if things go wrong.
Hope this helps!

Kernel upgrade having ABAP+JAVA instance
Hi team,
Can you provide the procedure how to kernel upgrade for our windows system having ABAP+JAVA instance releae version 700.
Provide the links, your replies are very helpful.
Regards
BhaskarHi Bhaskar,
You can use JSPM too in this case. Otherwise if you want to do it the old fashioned way:
> Stop SAP, Database, Saprouter, listeners and all the
related services.
> The location of the kernel is /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run
> Take a backup of the files in this location and take a
print out of the ls -ltr (This is needed to give the new files the
correct permissions)
> Overwrite all the new files to the kernel location. The
purpose is to retain the old files for which the new version is not
available.
> The permissions of the file need to be changed as they
were before.
> Restart all the processes. The kernel upgrade is
now done. System
> status will give the newer version of the kernel.>
>
disp+work
Will give the
new Kernel version.

Syncronization of ABAP+java stack during the upgrade.
Hi All,
We have successfully upgraded our BWD & BWQ which is ABAP+JAVA stack .
we have followed the process of uninstalling the java stack and removing the j2ee and SDM folder and starting the system for the upgrade.
Tomorrow we are going to start BWP , i found the way to syncronize the upgrade in upgrade manual like starting the SAPjup when upgrade asks for syncronization.
Can any one suggest me the process of starting the SAPjup for sync like already upgrade is running with SAPup and just waiting for SAPjup to sync it's just a norwal way of starting the SAPjup ? or anything.
But i am thinking to go in normal what we followed for the BWD&BWQ.
Please suggest...
Thanks,
Subhash.GPLease proceed with your old strategy it sounds better.

Kernel Change on ABAP+JAVA Dialog instances
Hi guys (& girls).
Another question from me.
I installed two Dialog instances for an ABAP+JAVA System (BI 7). The Central instance is on AIX, the DIs are running on SLES / x86_64.
Now i want to change the kernel.
It's fully automated for the Centeral Instance - i do it with the JSPM. Is there also an automated possibiltiy for changing the kernel on the DI? Or do i have to do it manually?
There is no extra JSPM on the DIs. How do you do that????
Thanks for your help,
MartinHi,
the above link does only describe Java only systems
For my distributed environments, I have setup a global NFS share which looks like:
kernel
\_ 640_EX2_UC
| \_ linuxx86_64
| | \_ current -> ./PL145
| | \_ PL111
| | | \_ disp+work
| | | \_ ... [all other files]
| | \_ PL145
| | \_ ...
| \_ aix
| \_ current -> ./PL145
| \_ PL111
| \_ ...
| ...
\_ 700_NUC
The instances are linked against the current link, which points to the right kernel folder. I setup a script with copies my latest downloads to these folder structure by creating a new PLXXX folder. Then, when it is time, the "current" link is set to the new "PLXXX" folder. Thats all
Thanks,

Kernel Upgrade Impact on ABAP perspective ?
We are planning for Kernel upgrade. I like to know what kind of impact on ABAP point of view.
My question is after the upgrade what are things i may needs to check from abaper perspective ?
I don't know is right to ask this question in abap general forum. may be our abap friends have something to share.
a®s
Any Info ?@gautam : i've read that before kernel upgrade we have to use "SGEN" transaction to generate objects with available load and then after kernel upgrade is done we have to regenerate objects from last generation..
can you please explain why do we need to do this...
as per my understanding it has got to do something with ABAP consistency....
but why excatly this is done..can anyone tell.. -

which is "Upgrade Guide

"This document describes the upgrade to SAP NetWeaver 7.0 Business Intelligence ABAP including enhancement package 2 on IBM i."
..but I would like to upgrade to NetWeaver 7.3 on IBM i
Please let me know when the new upgrade guide is available.

The links have been updated with the correct versions. This is also true for the ABAP only version, which previously pointed to 7.0 EHP 2.

Getting error in ABAP coding after Upgradation of kernel
Today our basis team has updated kernel. Now while writing code for
Ex: write:/ u2018SAPu2019. Its giving error Field "u2018SAPu2019" is unknown. It is neither in one of the specified tables nor defined by a "DATA" statement.
I want to know is there any thing wrong in Kernel upgradation or in higher version hard coding is not allowed?!
Reg,
Prajwala.Hi
You are using the sign u2018 instead of '
If I write a line code of your, I obtain the same your error.

Solution Manager 4.0- Kernel Upgrade(disp+work stops)
Hi,
While doing Kernel Upgrade for Solution manger 4.0 , the disp+work stops.
I have taken the Packs as per my requisite for Windows server X64 bit - Unicode
The files that were taken are :
SAPEXEDB_102-20001356.SAR

The services were stopped, the sap was stopped and the exe backup was taken.
Now after uncar of the SAR files, and while starting the services and SAP, the disp+work stops.

Hello,
We have just performed Kernel upgrade on Netweaver 7.0 ABAP+Java system.
We just replaced the /usr/sap/SID/SYS/exe/run folder with teh new kernel.
It was successful and in ABAP we can see the new kernel.
But in Java, in System Information, it does not reflect teh same patch level.
In ABAP it shows Kernel 700 Patch 179
In Java it says a different patch level 109884.0
Can you tell me why in Java it does not reflect teh same kernel patch level?
Thanks.patch level 109884.0
This isn't a kernel version, this is the version of your j2ee engine. In a dual stack installation the abap and j2ee share the same kernel (also remember there is an additional SCS instance) .
For the J2EE you can for example use JSPM to verify the kernel version. After you started JSPM, switch to tab "Deployed Componenets", there you see com.sap/SAP KERNEL

Kernel upgrade on window system 32-bit
Hi team,
I have installed ECC6.0 on my windows32-bit system, now the present kernel level is 75.
I need to do kernel upgrade, i had ABAP+JAVA instance, Can u tell me the procedure or any is it normal we do for ECC5.0 having only ABAP instance.
So please be specific in the replies,
Your replies are very helpful.
Regards
Bhaskar.TOn your sytem
1. -> get your DB information form typing R3trans -v or from the
R3 level system status. Note down your DB like Oracle or
MSSQL.
2. -> go to SMP and download the appropriate kernel by going
checking 32-64 bit and unicode and non-unicode.
3. -> go to DataBase independant and download
SAPEXE<version>.SAR
4. -> got to DataBase dependant and download
SAPEXEDB<version>.SAR
5. -> for safer side make a backup copy of your existing kernel
with the date and version info.
6. -> Shutdown your SAP (NOT YOUR OS). if you have
application server bring them down first and then Central
Instance.
7.-> now extract this two new .SAR file into your existing
kernel or to any new folder by typing
SAPCAR -xvf SAPEXE***.SAR and SAPEXEDB***.SAR
8. -> if you have extracted the files at some other location that
copy them to your existing location.
9. -> if you are using linux than it is good to do
cleanipc <instance no> remove command, on windows
it is not required.
10.-> Start your Central Instance. type dpmon to find out the
system status. Once the sytem is up start your
Application server also.
11.-> You can check your new kernel version from OS level by
typing disp+work or from the R3 level by going in to
Syste-> Status..
