Washed out and dissapearing display profile

Hi,
I hope someone might have some insight with my PB problem.
Thank you in advance for reading my long winded 1st post.
I wonder if any one else is having a similar problem.
I thought that this was the best place to turn for advice.
I have a one month old 15"PB, with 1.5 gigs of ram, and a 100 gig 7200 rpm hitachi HD, which has been running great until last Wednesday. Earlier on Wednesday I ran for the "first" time the software updater to 10.4.3. I don't think this is the reason for the following problem because of the reinstalls of the original OS, but you never know.
Anyway the display would all of a sudden look washed out. The difference is somewhat subtle but wrong. (Sometimes after staring at it for so long in the beginning I wasn't sure what was noraml or not anymore). I tried things like changing brightness, went to Universal Access and played with the contrast but it didn't look "normal" to me. I then checked the display profile of which the active profile was "LCD Display" which I now beilive to be the correct one. I decided to calibrate, which created a new profile. It didn't seem to be diiferent so I deleted the "new profile" which by chance or something also deleted the default "LCD Profile" now definitely washed out . The default setting was now "Generic RGB Proflie". Without the "LCD Display" profile, it won't/wouldn't recalibrtae again.
( You can see the difference by changing this setting between the LCD Dispaly and the Generic RGB profile.)
After reading for hours to try and find out how recreate the "LCD display" profile but with no luck I thought it best to backup everything and do a clean/erase and install.
This worked and it was back again:)
But after a while (a 1/2 hour or a few) it would vanish again and default to
the "Generic RGB Proflie".
Rebooting would fix it.( I can't remember if it fixed it everytime or not).
I phoned Apple Care 3 times. The first two times to a level one tech which didn't provide any insight. The third time to a second level who thought it must be hardware related. He guessed that it might be losing comunication with the display?
He said that I could send it in for repair to see if they can figure it out or try taking it back to the Authorized Apple store from where it was purchased, which I thought might be quicker because I live in BC, Canada.
I took it in on Thursday only to have them get back to me today Monday to say that they can not recreate the problem. The repair tech asked for more information from me about the problem in hopes of recreating it. The tech after today would be away until Friday.
I phoned the sales lady of which I have had (before this) and know quite well, and voiced my displeasure. She is looking in to it but if they can't recreate it in the next however long I have to take it back until it happens again to start all over and be no further ahead.
I am so frustrated.
Thank you for reading,
Martin
  Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hey, I had the same problem. Although I (kind of) isolated it. I found out that any time I am playing Civ III and unplug my power adaptor, the display goes to minimum power mode (dim). If one shines a light on it, then you can find the cursor and do stuff, but it is not an acceptable solution. The problem has happened afterwards, but it wasn't reproducable. Although I noticed that I had lots of applications open and was usually browsing in Safari when it happened. I've had other problems like a sticky trackpad or a messed up key bindings. (Delete not only took away a character, but it turned down my display brightness.
Good luck.

  • Both displays very washed out and saturated.

I searched a whole lot for an answer to my problem but I don't really know how to formulate it into words so I didn't get very far.
I'm using a 13" MacBook with an external monitor and on my user only, the whites have absolutely no contrast and appear really washed out. I can see no gradient in the finder's panes and even the lines surrounding this input box in firefox are invisible. I have no idea what's happened.
When I switch users, the problem disappears. I've thought it might be the display's color profile but when I applied the one for my user to the other user, the problem still wasn't there. Help, anybody, my eyes are burning.

I have no idea what was going on, or what caused the problem. I was messign around with the displays, inverted it 180 degrees and that seemed to fix my problem. After it went back to right side up the problem was gone. I hate you apple. You make my life miserable for your enjoyment.

  • Color is washed out and the type is fuzzy

The color on my HP Pavillion 15 Notebook PC appears washed out. In addition, despite trying several settings on the "clear type", my type seems to be fuzzy nd difficult to read. I've already tried adjusting the color on the advanced settings to no avail. As an example, if there is a box surrounding this post area, I cannot see it. I'm really frustrated and ready to return this after fighting with it for over a month.

  • Colors faded, washed out in PDF display

Hi all, odd problem... found a few like it in the forums, no solutions though.
When I export a PDF from InDesign CS3 to Acrobat 8, the PDF opens with a dull "wash" over the entire pages.
When I scroll or move thru the document in Acrobat, I briefly see the pages properly (vivid color, rich blacks) for a split-second, then this grayish "wash" appears over everything. This even happens in the Print preview dialog.
It seems to print OK, but executives will be opening & viewing this file and not always printing. I'm getting comments like "can you fix the color?"
My color settings are synchronized thru Bridge.
    Any insight is much appreciated!!

I am having a similar but different problem.
My documents print from InDesign CS3 just fine. The printed output matches my on screen colors just fine. When I create a PDF from InDesign, the onscreen PDF looks just fine... BUT (here's the problem) the printed output from the PDF is washed out.
The reason this is important is because I have to send a PDF file to the printer to have it printed. The printer only accepts PDF files.
The color space is CMYK in all cases (US Web Coated SWOP v2)
I have tried a TON of different options, from "Preserve Color Space" to not preseving, convert, etc. etc.
Does anyone have any ideas why printing from InDesign looks good but printing from the PDF file is always washed out?
    Thanks,

  • Adobe Reader docs appear washed out and faint with Firefox 6.0.1, but not with Internet Explorer. Running Windows 7

The PDF docs opened in Firefox are very light and the color of print is multicolored shaded. Different parts of display different shades of any color but black. Just loaded newest Adobe Reader, did not help. Previously running Reader 9. Haven't had a problem till Firefox 6. If I fool with the Window Color in 7 I can effect the PDF doc. Lowering saturation level to nothing helps, but doesn't fix problem.

Since i installed yosemite, the some parts of the screen can hardly be seen and whenever I restart the desktop display reverts back to the yosemite screensaver which I have never selected.  Do i need to reinstall or what.

  • 10.4.5 Update is out and fixes display problems.

For all who have not updated yet:
You can either on Apple.com/support/downloads get the Intel 10.4.5 update or the blue Apple in the left top corner of the screen click it and then software update.
This will list all available updates depending on what is on your MAC.
There is several Imac Intel users reporting fixes for their display problems ect. after installing the update + restarting.

This fixes the problems except maybe for the 20" 256mb vram ones ????
www.hardmac.com reports still some problems on one of theirs.

  • Playbook displaying my photos:- washed-out, reds and greens look faded,

Hello x Im new here just got my Playbook
    Can anyone help with this.
Two weeks ago I bought a Blackberry Playbook from Simply Electronics over the internet simplyelectronics.net. The website was in english money, union jack icons plus english phone number. I phoned customer services about an issue just to check the firm out, then went ahead with my purchase and received it in four working days.
I have since found out, like many other people who ordered from them, that Simply Electronics is in some other country - I do not know if it's China or U.S.A. I would never have known if I had not looked them up on the net for reviews. They seem to have changed their website now to American dollars.
That is not the essential problem though, this is:-
The Blackberry Playbook, though superb, slick and working fine in all ways, has a problem with displayment of colour photographs. The colour is washed out, particularly reds and greens. Photos which look vibrant on my Sony Xperia phone and on my computer, look very jaded on this tablet, although the resolution and clarity is superb. It's not just the saturation that is poor. There is a colour bias.
I am a photographer and I primarily got this tablet specifically for showing photos to people (taken with my Canon SLR camera and my Sony cameraphone). It is now gutting for me to see the vibrant reds coming up as a burnt orange or browney red. Grass looks washed out and not lush as it was in the photo.
I do believe there is a fault with this Playbook.
Do you know if this is a known problem or issue with the Blackberry Playbook or with Tablets in general. Do you know what I could do about it? Do you know how I could get in touch with Blackberry to tell them about it.
Returning it to SimplyElectronics if they are in another country would be expensive and I may just get another Playbook with the same or a different fault - too much hassle.
I do not know what my best course of action would be. Can you help.
The fact I got the Blackberry Playbook for £204 postage free, is some consolation as it's a good item with no other flaws, but when I see my photos on the screen, the colour problem seems too big a deviation from normal to be satisfied with it.
What can you advise. Is this colour wash-out a common thing. How do I contact Blackberry?
    Carolyn

I don't know have this issue with pictures and images. The color rendition is superb. It is not a general fault of the Playbook.. there could be some issue with the one you have.
First, try a reset of the Playbook. Press and hold the Power key, up and down volume (-/+) all three buttons simultaneously, for about 10-12 seconds. You should the red LED blink and that should allow a reset of the PlayBook and to power up. Afterwards, do the images appear any better?

  • Disconnect+reconnect external display = washed out image

    hi guys
I need some expert help on this. Using a Dell E178 WFP external display on my 2010 Macbook Pro via mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter. This display has no EDID it seems so I use SwitchResX to create the necessary resolution override (1440x900). SwitchResX has nothing such as daemons or helpers installed on top, so this boils down to graphics drivers.
My problem: When I reboot the machine, the display has the necessary brightness, contrast, and colour balance. If I unplug the display, wait a sec, then plug it back in, the image comes up very bright and washed out, and I can't get a "true" black out of the display.
What this isn't: I have a ColorSync profile, and make sure it is successfullly loaded, i.e. I go through the trouble of opening up system preferences>displays>color to make sure it reloads. This is not a ColorSync problem. It is not the 2.2 vs 1.8 gamma problem either. Ctrl+shift+eject does not fix it. Creating a new colour profile does not fix it either. The usual SMC, permissions, safe boot, etc tricks don't work either.
Apple engineers have sent me a copy of TimingSnoop but were baffled by the display having a "fake" EDID (when run without SwitchResX TS detects no EDID at all). Since I refused to roll back my entire system to 10.6.4 or uninstall SwitchResX (it does not interfere??) they closed the bug stating "insufficient information".
10.6.4 did not have this problem, and my hardware is perfectly fine.
Rolling back the graphics to 10.6.4 fixes this issue (but creates other issues)
I'm looking for information on this. Has anyone had the same happen? Is it confined to sans-EDID displays?
Have googled a lot but I'm running out of search terms... Anything could be of help?
    Thanks in advance.

Again, this is not the gamma problem that's fixed by just opening the display preferences and resetting the colour profile.
This seems to be somehow related to the display's EDID and the video adapter (Nvidia) not resetting properly when first unplugged and then plugged back in. My support request with Apple is more than a year old in total now and replies have been trickling but all of them add little (if anything at all) to a fix.
My particular problem is finding these "a lot of" people who are experiencing this problem. Everyone I've seen so far talks about the gamma/colours problem, never about the brightness and reboot. So yours is the first instance of someone having exactly the same problem. Hopefully we can find more people? Do you know where I should be looking?
Another idea I've had is to possibly talk to the OSX86 community? If Apple are not interesting in issuing a fix for this, maybe someone else has done some work? After reviewing Apple's code (at least that part which is made public) I'm pretty convinced this is in Nvidia's territory, and that gives me very little hope..
I'm interested to know if this has been fixed on Lion at all..? Ideas?

  • Brand new Macbook Pro display is REALLY washed out!

I just purchased a brand new macbook pro in mar 2011. Compared to the macbook pro my friend bought in november the display is extremely washed out and dull. I've tried changed the color profiles, contrast, etc and it doesn't help. does anyone else have this problem? is there any way to fix it??

if you are in the 14 day period.... exchange it! I am/have been going through a display issue of my own. Demand satisfaction! You should from Apple (at least that's what their customer service is telling me)! Esp. when they are soooo pricey! Good luck!

  • Thunderbolt Display has issue with weird washed-out colors after waking from sleep (after upgrade to Mavericks)

I've got a Thunderbolt Display that I use with my Macbook Air (mid 2012) - usually in clamshell mode.
When I let the computer go to sleep, and then wake it up by clicking the mouse, the monitor turns back on but the colors are washed out and purple looking.
The display goes back to normal when I unplug and replug it to my laptop.
I first noticed this problem after upgrading to Mavericks.
I made a video demonstrating the issue here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19179-MVpWA&feature=youtu.be
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Will

Same thing for me too.  Late 2012 13" MBP Retina.  I have to unplug the Thunderbolt cable and plug it back in.
This has only started for me in the last two days.  The first two weeks of Mavericks was ok.
Update:  I just got back from a trip.  I was using the laptop separate from the Thunderbolt display.  I hadn't restarted since I returned and connected the monitor.  I've just rebooted, and put the computer to sleep.  After resuming from sleep, the display is ok.  Maybe try rebooting?  I'll update if it continues.

  • Web Colors: Washed out.  Color Profile?

When using lightroom, I find that photos that are exported as Web images appear washed out and lighter than when I'm in the "Library" section. I find myself compensating by darkening the images in the Library to get the just right in "Web".
I guess I attribute that to a mismatched color profile. But I can't find any settings saying "the Library color profile is AdobeRGB and the Web profile is sRGB" or something like that.
Where is that setting? Am I crazy? Again? :-)
    gm.

After so many people here and in every other photography forum asking why their images look 'wrong' in a browser, and the answer being, over and over, that they are using the wrong color space for output, it should be obvious that the reason that they notice and catch the problem is because they are using a non-managed browser. The ONLY reason they caught the problem is because they are using a non-managed browser. If they are using a managed browser, they won't catch the problem.
I would much rather use a browser that represents an average view and have confidence that people are seeing something reasonable, than assume that everything went right and post stuff indiscriminately and in a sense blindly. After all, if there is going to be so much variation between monitors, why stress out with color management in the first place. Just calibrate your monitor so you have a decent baseline and move on. But have SOME way to know that the workflow went as expected... use a managed browser and that final check is inexistent.
Suppose you print at a place like Lulu.com. Would you upload and order
50 copies of a book before you buy one copy of a book and make sure that everything is correct? That would be just plain stupid. Well, putting up a website without checking it on a non-color managed browser is just about as silly.
To each his own... some advice is practical, some is theoretical... understand the theory, but live in a practical world. And take simple steps to catch stupid mistakes, like making sure that you use a non-managed browser to make sure that you output the right colors.

  • Extremely bright iMac display with Washed-out colors

I recently purchased a 20" iMac and am having problems with the display. The colors are extremely washed-out and faded even at the lowest brightness settings. Although recalibrating helps, I have been unable to get acceptable color by doing so, and the only way I have found to reduce the brightness of the whites is to use a third party utility that reduces the brightness below Apple's default specs, but at the cost of making everything else darker.I have been unable to find an acceptable balance where the colors look reasonably accurate for home use.I would have preferred to get a refund on this machine, but I bought it from an Apple reseller which has a no-refund policy on Apple products.
Has anybody managed to find a workaround for this issue or has a custom calibration that works reasonably well to address it? Also, is there any way to disable the iMac's internal display so that I can hook it up to an external CRT and just use that? If not, I am wondering if using an external display will degrade the graphics performance overall, as the card is powering two displays. If not I would be happy just to do that for now. Because of the glare coming off the screen and inability to control the brightness, I am finding it extremely difficult to use this display. Does anybody know of an anti-glare screen for the iMac or any tips on reducing glare, as it is a serious issue for me.

Well I run a program DarkAdapted http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12134 to correct the brightness of whites, it even improves the viewing angle a lot, color shifts are almost non-existant.
Shades works just as well, but eats a bit more CPU.
    http://www.charcoaldesign.co.uk/shades
A warning though when using Shades: you can darken the screen with it to a level you no longer can control the desktop/system, so I recommend you to memorize the short key to quit Shades, I think it is Command-Enter, so if you accidentily dim the screen just to see how far you can go (like I did) you don't have to panic
