Washed out colors - brightness too bright - fix?

Hello!
Well, I'm currently running a 400 mhz, slot loading, iMac DVSE (spring 2000), equipped with 10.4.8, 512 MB ram, and an 80G hard drive!
However, now that i've upgraded to tiger, and am using this old machine far more, I've noticed that the display looks a bit funky - the colors seem a bit light - particuarly the blacks.
I've used the color calibration app, but although better, the blacks are still way to bright - a sort of dark, charcoal gray. The reason I think it's the brightness is that I have an old CRT attached to my Powerbook that when turned to maximum brightness, has the same gray-blacks. Droping the brightness to around 75% gives the colors their true, deep hues. This is nice, considering my desktop is a rotation of Hubble Space Telescope pics! I have turned down the brightness as far as the displays system pref will allow -but it's too bright.
I know that one of the CRT iMacs has an internal brightness dial somewhere - but I don't remember which model or where it is/how to access. Does anyone know? I'd be a good fix. I'm willing to open up the iMac if neccessary - I need to install a PRAM battery too!

PS: When attached to the external CRT, the blacks look great - just like on the Powerbook - so it's not an internal video issue with the iMac that I know of.

Yes - PRAM doesn't help.
PRAM batt is dead, has been for a while. I do need one soon...
I'll try a FW drive boot (has 10.4.7 on it), to see if that helps - but it's been bright like this for quite a while. I never really noticed, because before Tiger, all the iMac was used for was a iTunes and OS 9 games playing, weather radar checking machine. Now I'll do work on it during the day - say, when I'm home between classes and need to work on a lab report, but don't want to unpack my powerbook for just one hour. Not only that, but with these space-desktops, the brightness is just more visible. Hmm.... I wonder if I turned up the gamma to far during calibration.... checks
But the question still stands: is there any sort of internal control for brightness? It may have been the tray-loading iMacs that had that.

Washed out colors with Canon Pro9000 using ICC profiles

I recently bought a brand new Canon Pro9000 printer and have a problem getting acceptable results when using the supplied ICC profiles.
I believe I am doing everything by the book. First I select the correct ICC profile for the printer and the paper I am using in the Aperture print dialog, then I go into Print Setting and set the paper type in the Quality and Media section, as well as matching the print quality to the ICC profile.
The Canon driver I use (10.1.0.0) does not provide the option of explicitly turning off color management in the printer. If a choose a profile from the Aperture printing dialog and then go into "Printer Setting > Color Options" the Color Mode drop down menu is grayed out. After searching trough various discussion forums I can see that some people claim that color management is automatically turned off when selecting a profile, but I have not been able to get a confirmation on this.
The resulting print is quite disappointing, it is very bright and with washed out colors. I have tried quite a few different papers, including semi gloss and photo rag - all original Canon papers (of course using the matching profiles).
Using the default "System Managed" option on the Color Sync drop down menu produces great looking prints that very closely matches what I see on my display. My only take on them is that they are very slightly over saturated.
When I enable on screen proofing with the matching profile, I can see that the picture gets slightly brighter, but way less that what I get on the prints.
I have calibrated my display according to the suggestions from Bagelturf (http://www.bagelturf.com/files/694c5a88c7241f8f04c7cff33cde8e3e-560.php), which is in line with Apple´s recommendations in the Aperture documentation.
I have read trough discussion on similar problems, both here ("more color nasties" and "Printing problem since upgrading to Aperture 2") and at dpreview, but I have not been able to figure out this problem yet.
System configuration:
- MacBook Pro 2.4GHz
- Leopard 10.5.2
- Aperture 2.1
- Panasonic DMC-L1 camera (shooting RAW)
- Canon Pro9000
- Canon driver 10.1.0.0 (CUPS)
Any suggestions?

With my iP8500 I leave it on, so it appears to be specifically the behavior of the Pro9000. I did a little more testing last night as I recently re-calibrated my system, and have another method you can try. Instead of turning off "Black Point Compensation" which can leave photos with lots of shadow detail a bit too dark, open up the "Printer Settings" window and go to the color management options. The only thing you can change here is the brightness setting. Change it from Normal to Dark, leaving BPC turned on. I think you'll be pleased with the results. Good luck!

Firefox chrome in washed-out colors, hard to read

Hi,
To see anything but bright washed-out colors and text, I had to change to a dark theme! (NASA Night Launch) But this is as good as it gets, bleached pink (should be black), text still hard to read.
- Web page ok, it's just the chrome (tabstip, address bar and other toolbars) that is messed up.
- Only present on one of my computers (with FF32.0.1).
- On this computer (laptop), the problem is present on two recently added external displays. (not the built-in, not previously added displays)
- Only Firefox affected, no other programs running on my Win8.1update is affected. (other browsers show regular colors/text in tabstrips, toolbars, menus etc.
- Problem gone while in Firefox Safe Mode.
- Problem remains even if I disable every single add-on, and set "ask to activate" on every plugin.
Any ideas?
Hope to be able to stick to Firefox in the future :)

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Washed Out Color on One User Account But Not The Other

Heyo,
I'm on my second Macbook Pro. Apple had to replace the first one. But that's behind us.
Anyway, I have a bit of a predicament. I've noticed that the colors on my main user account are washed out and dull. I created a new user account to see if the problem was a hardware or software issue.
The thing is, the account with washed out colors has Adobe Photoshop, and the rest of the Design Premium CS3 suite - as well as Final Cut Studio 2 - but these are not on the other.
So, I'm guessing that this issue is connected with CS3 and FCS 2.
This issue appears regardless of what color profile I use. But I normally use the Adobe RGB profile - which is what I used to test the other account.
Any ideas what I could do to get my color back? Is there a setting I can change for this?

I'd try to isolate a corrupted user preference file.
Apparently, Diskwarrior now claims to fix those. Or you can just look through the preferences folder in your user folder and start pulling some of those out to the disktop, log out and then log back in and see if that does anything.
When something is affecting one account but no others, I think the clear majority of the time it is a user preference file that is responsible.

Has anyone solved the "washed out colors" / gamma correction problem?

I'm trying to create a high-quality slide show from pictures. I've tried iPhoto, iMovie, and FotoMagico. What they have in common in the Quicktime engine for compression. There seems to be a problem with washed-out colors - across all programs - when trying to export the slideshow. I've tried many different codecs (H.264, x264, Photo-JPEG, PNG, JPEG-2000), as well as a variety of settings and filter corrections. Nothing has been effective. Last year, I was able to use FotoMagico with the Photo-JPEG codec, and the photos looked great. This year, things are not working (see photo below). The folks at FotoMagico attribute problems to Quicktime. And since I've tried creating the slideshow on a variety of platforms, I have to agree.
And yes, I know this is a common problem - I've read many google links - but I wanted to see if there was any current workarounds / solutions.
Any other options?

Seriously Apple... this has been an issue for many years now!
Why can't this be fixed once and for all?
The ridiculous thing is that VLC play H.264 videos with much better colors than QT.
This question has been asked many many times over the years and i have yet seen a single reasonable explanation from Apple.
Here's a quick test of a color image screen recorded to a mov and viewed on screen together with the TIFF image (screen shot of everything in OS X 10.6.6)
The washed out look doesn't show as much in this simple color test but is very obvious in normal videos.

I have a new iMac 27" with the
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB
graphics card.
Since a few days I find that some screens have washed out colors (see pictures). Has anybody seen this?
Also the command bar is almost invisible.

Washed Out Colors When Digitizing From Mini-DV camera

Instead of renting a deck, I figured I'd just use a mini-DV camera to digitize some footage. The reasoning I'm using, is that there is NO DIFFERENCE in quality between digitizing mini-DV footage from a professional deck vs just a mini-DV camera. Is that correct?
The problem is that the footage on the LCD screen on the camera looks great. Vivid colors, solid blacks, great contrast. However, when I digitize into FCP 7 (Snow Leopard) the footage becomes murky. Washed out colors, milky blacks and hence it looks a lot more low-res than what I'm seeing on the camera's LCD screen when it digitizes.
Now, my first thought is that the screen is just compensating with more saturation and contrast. However, I'm also worried that somehow the footage isn't being brought in properly. I'm using the standard NTSC DV Anamorphic preset and capturing that way. Is there some gamma setting along the way could have affected the footage.
As it looks great on the camera's LCD, I'm wondering if there isn't some capture setting somewhere. Otherwise, I'm going have to boost the saturation and contrast to try and make the FCP footage match what I'm seeing on the camera.

It's all there in my initial inquiry.
Kind of...(let's not forget that your profile still lists G4 / Mac OS 10.4.2)...these details are important.
We ask for specifics, because often users have inadvertently tweaked settings, or run Software Update or some other upgrade, that can affect the system as a whole, particularly FCP.
Things like... exactly which version of QT are you using? Snow Leopard loads QTX (QT10) by default, which can cause it's own issues. It is possible to load QT7 additionally, but it will go into your Utilities folder (you should be able to move it to Applications), but since I'm not versed in SL, I'll not speculate whether it's an issue for you or not.
That's one example. So, please give us exact versions/info on...

Capture and Sequence settings (just to make sure)
How is the camera connected?
How are you currently monitoring your captured media?

I have a question about Windows XP and washed out colors on the display. I hear that there are some display driver issues with the new unibody MacBook Pros when using either XP or Vista on a Boot Camp partition. Just to be clear, when I say "washed out colors", I mean to say that the colors have a blue-ish, faded look to them. I know that this issue lies with the type of color gamma (or whatever it's called) that Windows uses versus what Mac OS X uses. So, now for the 2 main questions I want to ask:
1)Is there any permanent solution to this weird color problem?
And, if not, then:
2)Is there any temporary solution, such as maybe a program that can apply a color profile for you? For example, I read on another forum that programs like LUT Manager (http://www.exactscan.com/lutmanager/) can help apply an .icc color profile that you have in Mac OS X and apply it to Windows (you can even have it apply it automatically when you start up Windows). Do any of you know something that might be even better?
Also, how do you make an ICC color profile in Mac OS X without actually applying it?

Does anyone even know what I'm talking about? I'll be glad to elaborate further if necessary...

Extremely bright iMac display with Washed-out colors

I recently purchased a 20" iMac and am having problems with the display. The colors are extremely washed-out and faded even at the lowest brightness settings. Although recalibrating helps, I have been unable to get acceptable color by doing so, and the only way I have found to reduce the brightness of the whites is to use a third party utility that reduces the brightness below Apple's default specs, but at the cost of making everything else darker.I have been unable to find an acceptable balance where the colors look reasonably accurate for home use.I would have preferred to get a refund on this machine, but I bought it from an Apple reseller which has a no-refund policy on Apple products.
Has anybody managed to find a workaround for this issue or has a custom calibration that works reasonably well to address it? Also, is there any way to disable the iMac's internal display so that I can hook it up to an external CRT and just use that? If not, I am wondering if using an external display will degrade the graphics performance overall, as the card is powering two displays.If not I would be happy just to do that for now. Because of the glare coming off the screen and inability to control the brightness, I am finding it extremely difficult to use this display. Does anybody know of an anti-glare screen for the iMac or any tips on reducing glare, as it is a serious issue for me.

Well I run a program DarkAdapted http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12134 to correct the brightness of whites, it even improves the viewing angle a lot, color shifts are almost non-existant.
Shades works just as well, but eats a bit more CPU.

A warning though when using Shades: you can darken the screen with it to a level you no longer can control the desktop/system, so I recommend you to memorize the short key to quit Shades, I think it is Command-Enter, so if you accidentily dim the screen just to see how far you can go (like I did) you don't have to panic

FIXING THE WASHED OUT COLORS?

I really don't understand why the iphone can not be set up like a tv monitor....
we already have Brightness on the iphone why cant a screen be set up as below.....

That's not been an option in the iPhone since its inception two years ago. Best place to send such a new idea is Apple.
BTW .. my colors are not "washed out", so I suspect it may be an issue with your particular unit and that you should take it to Apple.

LaserJet 2605dn washed out colors with new color cartridges

I loaded the 3 new color cartridges, the black still has ink. Now when I print, the colors are washed out . I calibrated color and ran the cleaning utility. Strangely, the demo print page with the bright blue and orange looks just fine. I investigated further and found that printing from Adobe is okay. So it looks like I only have the problem when I'm printing from MS Office applications. Any ideas? It was working fine yesterday, before the toner change.

Washed out color in QuickTime videos on Windows machine

I recently shot a video for my church using an older Sony camera in HDV format. I edited the video in FCPX, and the colors looked fine in the FCPX timeline -- bright and rich. I exported the file using Compressor in H.264, 1920x1080 for projection in the church, and in .mp4, 640x360 for website display. The colors looked fine in the church projection (the QuickTime file was run on a MacBook), and they look fine when the website version is displayed in a browser running on a MacBook. However, when I view the video in a browser running on a Windows machine, or simply display the video in QuickTime on a Windows machine, the colors look totally drab and washed out, like a nasty grey filter was applied. I know it is not my Windows computer display, since other web videos look just fine. I spent hours one day researching this issue in old discussion groups posts. I tried a lot of different suggestions that I found:
--Encoding using x264encoder and changing the settings for the "nclc atom" and "gamma 2.2"
--Use JES Deinterlacer to change the same variables
--Increase gamma settings in Compressor
I must have exported the video 25 times with different settings and nothing seems to work. It is incredibly frustrating to work for days shooting and editing a video and then have it look like poop on Windows machines (which is what most people will use to view this video). In the 6 or so years I have been using Final Cut, I've found that it takes way longer to find the right export settings than it does to edit!
Does anyone have any thoughts about how I can make this video look the same on both Macs and PCs? Please let me know if you need more information about my project. Many thanks in advance!

I have both my PC & Mac running through the same display, the Mac digital and the PC analog, easy enough to switch between using the monitor front panel.
They look about the same to me, I had a custom calibration on the PC which had the gamma raised so it looked a a little washed out but only by a small amount, changing to a standard calibration and they looked nearly identical.
What I would like to see is the gamma lowered by a small increment and the contrast raised by the same amount.
The contrast alone might do it but I would try both.

Msi 560 Ti TFII/OC Washed out colors with Asus ML 238H/Heat Problem

So i got a 560 Ti TFII/OC a couple of days ago and before that i was using xfx 5850 with no problems. The monitor colors and contrast were high and f*ckin lively!
Now that im using the new card the colors seems a bit washed out or with more brightness or contrast or any other ! i tried defaulting monitor settings and changin colors in nVidia driver but non of 'em were like before. the best example is that black screens are never fully black! i mean they seem brighter and sh!t.
Also my defaul voltage for the card was 1.025 and when i ran FurMark 19.9 that day the temps were as high as 98 or so. then i got scared and i closed FurMark. Again i did some test with Kombuster and Witcher 2 and Dead Island and heat was around 80 which from what i read and saw is very high and im thinking maybe the card is faulty. now iundervoltaged it at 0.987 and the temp is about 75 in games. But in furmark it still reaches above 90:O

Thunderbolt Display has issue with weird washed-out colors after waking from sleep (after upgrade to Mavericks)

I've got a Thunderbolt Display that I use with my Macbook Air (mid 2012) - usually in clamshell mode.
When I let the computer go to sleep, and then wake it up by clicking the mouse, the monitor turns back on but the colors are washed out and purple looking.
The display goes back to normal when I unplug and replug it to my laptop.
I first noticed this problem after upgrading to Mavericks.

Same thing for me too. Late 2012 13" MBP Retina. I have to unplug the Thunderbolt cable and plug it back in.
This has only started for me in the last two days. The first two weeks of Mavericks was ok.
Update: I just got back from a trip. I was using the laptop separate from the Thunderbolt display. I hadn't restarted since I returned and connected the monitor. I've just rebooted, and put the computer to sleep. After resuming from sleep, the display is ok. Maybe try rebooting? I'll update if it continues.

Z1 compact-washed out colors

I've just taken delivery of a Xperia Z1 Compact and its a great phone, but for the life of me I cannot get the screen to look anything like what I think it should do - in a nutshell, light colours look pale and washed out and dark areas of the screen and photographs are distinctly lacking in detail.
Viewing photographs imported from my Galaxy S2 was a big shock - they look fine on the Galaxy S2 but absolutely atrocious on the Xperia - again, washed out light areas, a lack of detail in dark areas, unrealistic colours and they look even worse than photos viewed on my very old Nokia. Same issues apply even with photographs taken on the Xperia. I will see if I can take a photo of the two phones side by side with images on screen to illustrate this.
Another example - using Whatsapp, the text box is a pale yellow - looks pale yellow on iPhones, Samsungs etc. but is almost white on the Xperia and no amount of fiddling with brightness or white balance or toggling X-reality on and off makes much of a difference. Compared to the Galaxy S2 the richness in colour and clarity of detail just isn't there and the difference in on-screen image quality when viewing photographs is shocking. I was expecting at least comparable quality from a more recent phone.
I'm using Android 4.4.2 and all updates were applied when I set up the phone - its driving me crazy so if anyone can help I would be very grateful!

That's bad news Then-im no expert but it seems one of the issues is that the contrast is set so high that light colours get blown out and dark colours lose detail-and unless I'm missing it, the contrast can't be adjusted? Rather upset if this is the case as I'm now stuck with a phone on a 2 year contract which is always going to display rubbish images!! Having researched reviews the one thing all reviews rave about is the screen! Very disappointed if there really is nothing I can do
