Wastebasket on my MBA is VERY slow to delete...
Lately I've noticed that my "waste basket" is VERY slow to empty. As I remember, until recently, when I emptied the waste, the "gas gauge" rapidly moved from left to right. Now it crawls VERY slowly. Almost like it's doing a 3 pass write over. Anyone else notice this?
I have 65GB of free space if this is a factor.

I guess unchecking "Empty trash securely" took care of this problem. I put a bunch of stuff in the waste backet, then hit empty and it "swallowed" the whole load in one big gulp. Thanks for the tip Matt!
I realize the detete files can be recovered by a super techie, but there is nothing on my computer would worry me if the files were recovered. And I'm thinking this "empty trash securely" might preclude them from being recovered if push came to shove.

In my inbox, very slow opening some (not all) emails. To delete the problem emails takes 40-50 seconds. Also, I keep marking many emails as "junk" and yet I keep getting maile from those spam senders. Also, these problems happen in some of my local folders, but not in all of them?? Had no problem with prior version
Are you using McAfee anti virus by any chance?

Having mail problem very slow opening, deleting, unable to move to folders
Have a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac OS X Ver. 10.6.8 - Having AppleMail problems: very very very slow opening any new incoming mail, can't delete, can't assign to Spam, and can't move to any folder for storing, and can't empty trash. Seems to be corrupted and might need to reload the Mail Program (Version 4.6) and need to know if I can reload the mail program and if I did would I lose all the data stored in folders? I don't know how to reload the Mail program. Also the entire computer seems to be slow to react as well but mail is worse. I've checked and emptied caches for the browsers I use. Connecting to Internet all right but as I said, slow to react. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.
MichelPM, I don’t know how to find out how full is my Mail app. I confess to being mostly an ignoramus about computer hardware, software, applications storage and usage. I know where to look for some stuff, but I don’t know what all the information means. I found the page under About this Mac Serial-ATA that gives the following info: Macintosh HD:
Capacity: 319.73 GB (319,728,959,488 bytes)
Available: 270 GB (270,003,339,264 bytes)
Then under Memory Slot there are two banks in Bank 0 all categories are empty but Bank 1 says
Size: 1 GB
Type: DDR2 SDRAM
Speed: 667 MHz
Status: OK
I usually have three browsers open and one to two wordprocessers (Word and TextEdit), the resident Dictionary. When needed but closed when done with the current activity are Preview, Adobe Reader. I do have a lot of documents on the desktop and filed in folders are uncountable. I could commit most of these to flashdrives if I have to, but I’m not sure how to save all the stuff I have in folders in the Mail app. I do not run any antivirus or “crapware” software that I can find in the MacHD applications folder. I’ve never downloaded such programs. I will commence to copy to external drives data I wish to preserve. Can I copy the entire mail set of archive folders to an external hard drive? I have a La Cie.
With much appreciation for any help you offer,

It also comes up with an error message once in a while when I try to send something and won't send it but if I click send again then it usually goes out.
Check your firewall and make sure that Thunderbird has full access. (This computer has Norton 360, and the firewall blocked incoming connections)
How many folders are you storing offline? If you have a lot in your trash/spam/sent folders and it is storing offline, maybe that's slowing it down. It wouldn't hurt to check and see if your e-mail provider is somehow blocking Thunderbird. -
I empty Cache and all recent history except passwords to get about 4kbs and at most I can get about 6.7kbs. Firefox is a lot better than IE but I am stuck with Dialup or a high price for DSL from our Local Telephone company. I have Windows Vista and IE9 and 7 as this is a 64 system so I have to download both 32 and 64 to run. Firefox is bright and clear. I see that instead of Java which is disabled for Firefox it uses Jagermonkey, I tried to find some info on this but couldn't. I downloaded Firefox7 just 2 weeks ago.

Changes to NOTES works very slow from computer to iPhone
The synching of changed and changed notes on computers (iMacs and one MBA) are very slow, and took nearly one hour today - before the changed notes showed up on the iPhone.
Interestingly: on at least one of the notes, I was able to read the first line of the changed note in the "name" field of that note, but when opening the note, it showed the content before the change! Somehow some of the changes are more or less pushed to the iPhone, but does not seem to change the note itself.
Checked MobileMe services and notes synching to the cloud:
1) MobileMe services appear to be working: "All MobileMe services are online".
2) Changes to notes on computer is immediately reflected in MobileMe cloud notes.
3) Changes to MobileMe (the cloud) is not reflected on the iPhone or takes loooong time to show up - i.e.g more than 30-40 minutes, even if I refresh notes and mail accounts.
4) Turning of the iPhone and turning it on again (take 2-3 minutes) does not make any difference (i.e. update the modified notes) - howver, I can se that some changes to other notes are updated (a "to-do" mark inserted in another note).Hi J Chapple,

That not good for Apple style, please fix it asap.
LeiHi Try a Reboot press & hold power button & menu button hold both down until you see Apple Logo If this doesn't fix your problem Do a Factory Restore this will get rid of some bugs And iPad will be like new Do a backup to iCloud before doing this Make sure you use the same Apple ID I did this last week on iPad Air Running 8.1 It's just like new now very quick Cheers Brian

I want to buy MBA 11'' which model is good. i.e. i need speed. I am using Lenovo netbook s-10. Is very slow in opening web pages an also in operating other apps.
Put your first emphasis on memory. Don't even consider 2 GB.
Second, maximize your SSD size according to the ability of your wallet. Lastly is your processor.
For what you describe the MBA is plenty fast. -
My MBA has become very slow, any ideas?
I have a MacBook Air and recently it has become very slow. I have removed any large files and cleared trash etc! Safari is very slow and loading apps and programmes (numbers/pages) is also very slow.
Thanks.
Read and follow these Apple Knowledgebase guides in the order shown, to help determine what the cause might be. If nothing helps, please post a new question with your findings, explain the troubleshooting steps you took and their results, and be sure to include your system information (e.g. OS X 10.6.8 and MacBookAir3,1).

An SMC Reset might be justified, in the event you still experience inexplicably slow system performance.
Reset the SMC, then test your MacBook Air again.
SMC reset:
Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer. -
Hi,
When copying large files (100GB) from my macbook air to my Qnap NAS the transfer is very slow (100kB/s). It becomes immediately much faster (10MB/s) when I lock my session.
The MBA is connected via the gigabit port of the thundrbold display and a gigabit switch to the gigabit port of the NAS.
There is negligible other network activity shown when monitoring NAS or MBA bandwith usage.
So what can limit bandwith of a mac while in unlocked session?
Is the a bug in thunderbolt display dramtically deminishing bandwith when used? Bandwitdth is already high when locked and display shows login screen. It does not need to fall asleep.
ThxI want to thank you for your help but I think I have to give up. I've been trying for days to get the MBP just to recognise the NFS share. I've tried adding a server in Finder with no luck. I tried Directory Utility with full R/W access setup on NAS, then tried accessing root NAS folder, then the specific share folders, then with specific user enabled on the specific share folders but whatever I try I get nothing. I've changed my local username and password and UID on the Mac to exactly the same one I use for my NAS but it still won't find it and none of the command line options that people suggest do anything at all. I've tried SMB and AFP but they're both sluggish and nowhere near the performance of XP on the same hardware. For an OS that supposedly 'Just Works' I've had a very complicated, tedious and fruitless experience (pun intended). Maybe it's just me because others seem to report no problems accessing their NFS shares or transferring at high speeds with AFP or even SMB but I've had no luck whatsoever. Very frustrating indeed.
Again, sincere thanks for your time and I'll tag the post as answered because for all intents and purposes you answered my question very well. Unfortunately, this Mac just doesn't like me and I don't think I'll be spending money on one anytime soon. -
After installing Mountain lion, macbook air 2011 very slow
After installation of Mountain lion my macbook air 2011 got very slow. There has been a firmware upgrade too. Can you help?
Hi guys! Just installed ML on my early 2009 MBAir (after market upgraded to a 240g SSD, but still just 2g of ram), and I panicked a bit at first when it turned out to be painfully slow and not displaying right (+slow trackpad!).
Bear in mind that the first thing ML will do is index your files for spotlight, which takes a while and is a bit of a resource hog that will slow everything else down and cause your machine to heat up.
I let it work all night, but by morning, my CPU usage was STILL at 100% and everything slow...
Activity monitor showed nothing over 10% CPU usage... First tip was to display ALL processes in Activity monitor, and not just MY processes, to see what exactly was sucking up my CPU!
Then, and it seems to often be the culprit on MBA's, it turned out that the kernel_task process was using up to 170% of my CPU usage (!). Problem is, that process sort of does a million things, so it can be hard to pinpoint the actual issue.
One of the things it does though, is work against overheating...
Given the download+install+indexing, my machine had been working all day and night, and was indeed getting super hot. Turning it off and letting it cool down for a whole fixed it all.
Kernel_task is back to normal, CPU usage is normal, display and trackpad are back to perfect. And in the end, ML is snappier than SL for me, even with the bare minimum in memory!
Good luck! <3 -
i have a mac 15" non retina and i didn't upgrade it to mavericks .. when i run photoshop my pc becomes very slow and i don't know why!! the performance on photoshop is up to 70% so i think is good .. what is the problem?
All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

MBA that much slower than i5 MBP or MB?
I just went to best buy to try them out and was almost sold on the MBA until I tried something as simple as zooming into a picture and the MBA was worthlessly slow. Even the 2.8ghz mb was a lot better. Is the MBA really that slow with functions as absolutely basic as zooming into a pic?
To give an idea, the MBA basically locked up several times when trying to perform this function. They had three models on display and all were the same.Pyro2008 wrote:
I was just making a point...
For whatever reason, every MBA at best buy had weird slow downs and quirks. They were also slow loading webpages. Even the MBP's weren't as fluid as that video. Maybe best buy crapware?
Very possible. Maybe they were retrofitted with N570s? -
My MAC runs very slow. Rainbow wheel every time i try to go somewhere. Im a complete MAC novice. Only really use it for iTunes and email. the odd document here and there. The odd spreadsheet. Was brought up on a PC. I would imagine my system is in mess. I think i downloaded that Mackeeper which i have just discovered was not a good idea. I found a thread about EtreCheck and it suggested i posted the report of my machine which i have done.I only have 2GB of space. Not sure how much i have left. My wife keeps putting photos on here like they are going out of fashion. Bought the machine in 2008 because everybody said you have a MAC. I've never really got to grips with it but at least it worked. Now it does not run very well at all. That spinning wheel is driving me mad. HELP please, never ever used a forum light this either so please go gentle on me. Cheers Paul

Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Mac Mini boots very slow with Mavericks (after security update)
Hi,
my Mac Mini boots very slow after I've installed Maveriks. I did two clean installs by now, seemed to work OK after the second one but after the latest safety update (2014-002) the boot time is up to 5+ minutes. Starting Safari or other software takes addtional time. See below for system specs, Etrecheck and log. Any ideas what could cause this? According to the update history I did install the security update 2014-002 twice on the same day although I cannot remember doing such a thing.
Thanks Joerg
