Watch folders feature

Does Apple plan to add the "watch" folders feature to it's iTunes application?

  • Photoshop 10 and watched folders on Mac

    Hello,
I was a little disappointed with Photoshop 9 for Mac users that the watched folders feature that I found so useful on the Windows platform wasn't available. I understand this was due to a problem with the Mac OS which couldn't be rectified in time for the release.
Is the watched folders feature available with Photoshop 10 for Mac?
    Thanks.

This seems related.  At least my questions to Adobe brought me here.  I tried taking one photo from iPhoto and it brought all 8000 including all movies.  It then proceeded to make thumbnails for them, all without my asking.  Is there any adequate tutorial for Elements 10 that steers one around such pitfalls.  I have not used Photoshop before so perhaps it assumes all sorts of familiarity which i don't possess.  The Help doesn't seem very helpful.  Tutorial films work or don't work, seemingly on a whim.

  • Watched folders not on mac - will adobe resolve this

The mac version is unfortunately significantly hobbled by not haing the watched folders feature and more importantly the convenient export functions that exist in windows

As stated by Barbara, the export function is present in PSE11. In my opinion that's an absolute must.
On the other hand, I have learnt to ignore the 'watched folders' feature completely. No advantage and a lot of risks with background tasks interfering with your session. I want control over what and when I input media in the catalog. Softwares pretending to import everything in their catalog without asking (Picasa...) are a real plague when you have several tens of thousands pictures... The difference between 'watched folders' and the 'get pictures and videos from files and folder' is only that you decide when to watch and look for new media.
For those who want to keep control of what to import, the new folder location display of PSE11 is a good tool.

  • Watched folders and network mapped drives

Using watched folders feature, If I select one of my network mapped drives, PSE7 display a message saying the path is wrong :
Any chance it could work ? Thank you ...

You gave us no details on how your clients are configured.
If you are runnning Windows clients, then you need to enable machine authentication ON THE WIRELESS CLIENT and on ACS. Since you are using TLS, you also need to have a machine certificate on the computer.
Machine authentication will allow the wireless computer to connect to the wireless network BEFORE the user logs on. In this way, login scripts and drive mappings will take place the same way they would with a wired connection.
I believe you can search Cisco.com for an article that talks about the ACS and client settings for machine auth.

  • Where is the 'Watch Folders' option in PSE 9 Organizer for Mac?

I'm sure it's right in front of my face, but I can't find it. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your replies. Bob, thanks to you especially for your candor. I use Adobe products for both photography and graphic design. I have been a loyal PSE user since PSE 4, but I use Photoshop (started out with CS2, now up to CS5) for all of my editing. I only use PSE for my digital asset management. The reason I need watched folders is that any new files I create in CS5 are not automatically added to my catalog in PSE. I switched to a Mac 3 years ago and wasn't happy with any of the alternatives, so I have been using PSE for Mac since version 9. However, over the years, I have found that I don't always remember to go back into the PSE catalog to import after working on something in CS5, so my catalog is always missing some files. I have found a watched folder plugin for Lightroom that seems to work pretty seamlessly in the background, but I found Lightroom not nearly as intuitive to use when I bought LR2 a few years back. Plus, facial recognition is a big feature for me, and LR4 still lacks that. I guess that, for Mac users, there's really no one solution that works as well as PSE does for Windows users.
I guess I'll have to continue my search...Thanks again for your replies!

  • How do I create and activate watched folders in Acrobat Pro XI?

Our court reporting firm scans large amounts of client exhibits and would love to set up watched folders to convert images to text files. I know that former versions of Acrobat had separate versions of distiller.  What's the story in Pro XI. What is the recommended way to set up watched folders, if there is one?

As with previous versions Acrobat XI comes with Distiller. As with the previous version the use features of Distiller are the same.
Do note that Distiller only accepts *.PS files as input for creation of PDF.
All scanners initial output is an image file fromat (not *.ps). Other applications take the JPEG, TIFF, etc and process the image into other file formats (e.g., PDF).
    Be well...

  • Premiere Elements 9 Watched Folders

Bottom Line: Based on working with the Premiere Elements 9 trial version, it appears that you do not need Photoshop Elements 9 installed on the same computer as Premiere Elements 9 in order to be able to use the Watched Folder feature in Premiere Elements 9. For Premiere Elements 8, you had to have Photoshop Elements 8 installed on the same computer as Premiere Elements 8 to get a functioning Watch Folder feature in Premiere Elements 8.
    Background
Also, please refer to April 2010 "Watched Folders" thread here where the topic was gone over for Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/616740?tstart=0
There is a feature called Watched Folders which provides for the automatic placement of media in the Elements Organizer when the media are placed into a hard drive folder designated in the Watched Folder dialog.
You name that folder or folders in the Watch Folders dialog gotten to via the route Elements Organizer File Menu/Watched Folders. But in order for that Watch Folder dialog to be available you need to have a specific activated file in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. For version 8, it is “Adobe Active File Monitor V8”, and, for version 9, it is “Adobe Active File Monitor V9”.
Now you can install JUST Premiere Elements 9 and have the specific “Adobe Active File Monitor V9” be present and activated to make the Watched Folder dialog available for use
    (a) Click on the Organizer Tab in the row above the line up Organize Edit Disc Menus  Share
    (b) In the Elements Organizer, go to File Menu/Watched Folders
    (c) If any problems, check the "Adobe Active File Monitor V9" status in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services.

If you are shooting in any hi-def format, the video will need to be re-encoded when you produce a BluRay disc regardless. Even if you're feeding HDV in and gettiing MPEG2 out for your BluRay, the video is still being encoded to BluRay format -- so it's not more efficient to create an MPEG2 BluRay.
In fact, since all BluRay players can play H.264 video and since H.264 is a more advanced codec, it makes much more sense to go with this codec for all BluRay discs.

  • Media Encoder CS5.5 Watch Folders

I saw in the "whats new and changed" for media encoder that watch folder features are much improved. I've downloaded the trial it actually seems to be working far worse than our CS5 setup (although I REALLY dig the interface changes, really...). I set up CS5.5 to watch the same folders that I had previously had CS5 watching, and it didn't respond to any files being dropped into the folders. After letting it sit it out for a few hours, I rebooted CS5.5, and it picked up all of the files currently in there, but again, did not pick up any new files. The watch folders are on an SMB network, with Media encoder running on a PC and with most of the files coming from macs. CS5 does this fairly well, but CS5.5 is definitely a step back as far as watch folder functionality as far as I can see.

Updated Media Encoder and am now running 5.5.1.12 and........ still nothing. Tried to re-create the Watch Folder, restarted, blah blah blah. I should note that I previously (2-3 weeks ago) used the same Watch Folder on 5 different mpeg-2 files successfully. After that I shut down the Mac for winter vacation ever since then it hasn't worked. The only thing that has changed since then was an Apple update to Keynote.
Not that it'll help, but here are some images:

  • Watch folders are totally useless as they freeze Media Encoder

    Hi...
Decided to finally try the Watch folder thing.
    Wish I hadn't...
I added 10 watch folders, each with a separate output destination.
then I added the files to the 10 watch folders. All set to output Prores 4444.
I had "Auto-Encode Watch folders" un-checked. But that did NOT seem to interes AME ONE BIT. It started encoding right away. Typical adobe.
Anyway, during encode, AME will just stop encoding a file it is encoding. Progress will come to a halt and AME, of course, wont continue on its own.
It will however, remove the original file from the folder and add it to the originals folder it creates in the watch folder location. Leading the user to believe that file
    has been encoded.
To those of you contemplating using this poorly implemented feature, dont. considering the time it takes to setup multiple watch folder and the halts that AME are doing,
I promise you that you are better off manually encoding the files. Or use Apple Compressor. This one does it and might I add a WHOLE LOT faster than AME.
    To the AME Development team....
The point of a watch folder is to have AME to something automatically, and NOT overlooking it all the time.
I guess you chose to call it watch folder because the user has to watch over AME while it encodes.
    Up your game....

  • Can you set up watch folders on PSE 12 on a mac?

Do you have to do this manually when you add new photos? On Picasa there were watch folders and every time you added a photo to it, it would synch with the organizer... I wasn't thinking this was a downgrade when I purchased it.

Watch folders is a Windows only feature.

  • Watch Folders

I have installed Premiere Elements and wanted to use the Organizer.  I wanted to specify a watch folder, but whenever I click on File -> Watch Folders... I get an error: The Watch Folder Service is Unavailable.  I have even gone and reinstalled the software and that didn't seem to help.  I am running Adobe Premiere Elements 8 on Windows 7 64bit.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it working?  I would rather use this than manually adding videos.
    Thanks

    Twistymcquee
Do I have this correct...you only have Premiere Elements 8 (no Photoshop Elements 8) and want to use a Watch Folder feature in the program, and your operating system is Window 7 64 bit? And, you are not finding Adobe Active File Monitor V8 in the Service List under Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services to get the feature functioning??
I have Windows XP Professional, SP3.
Without Photoshop Elements 8, it is a no go according to my observations. You can open Premiere Elements 8, go to the Elements Organizer (via Organizer Tab in the row below the Organize (Blue) Tab) and there to the File Menu/Watch Folders. But you are going to get a "The Watch Folder Service is Unavailable" message. And, when you go to the Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services, there is no Adobe Active File Monitor V8.
Today I had to do a complete and clean uninstall reinstall of my Photoshop Elements 8 and Premiere Elements 8 to resolve an Organizer would not open issue. I reinstalled Premiere Elements 8 first and found what I described above with no Adobe File Monitor V8 in the Services List. Next, after I installed Photoshop Elements 8, the Adobe File Monitor V8 appeared in the Service List.
Even before all the uninstalling/reinstalling, I suspected Photoshop Elements was force that placed that Adobe File Monitor in the Service List. On my computer I have Photoshop Elements 6 Premiere Elements 4, Photoshop Elements 7 Premiere Elements 7, and Photoshop Elements 8 and Premiere Elements 8 installed. When I went to the Service List before all this uninstalling reinstalling I found there:
    Adobe File Monitor V6
    Adobe File Monitor V7
    Adobe File Monitor V8
The key here is that Photoshop Elements 6 is integrated with Premiere Elements 4, and the Service List said Adobe File Monitor 6, not Adobe File Monitor 4 or 6 and 4. With the others, both partners have the same number, that is 7 and 7 as well as 8 and 8. Bottom line, all this suggests to me that regardless of operating system, the presence of the Adobe File Monitor depends on the presence of Adobe Photoshop Elements. What do you think?

  • Watch Folders Not Working

I have recently upgraded to PSE 9 and like it a lot.  I managed to import my catalogues and things look fine.  However, the watch folder feature that worked so well in PSE 8 is not working at all in 9.  I have it set to the correct folders, but none of them are watching.  What can I do?
    Melanie

I would like to bump this because I too cannot get Wacth folders to watch.
I am using a network share, and unless I am doing something wrong, it doesnt work.
I have a RAW image I open in Camera Raw. I modify it, then convert it to a jpg and have it saved into the same place the RAW file is located. I would expect the orginizer to see the added file and auto add it to the orginizer because this is what the feature claims to do, but nothing happens.

  • "Watch Folders" in iTunes?

Why doesn't  itunes automatically update library when files are added or removed from folders ALREADY in the library? i.e. "Watch Folders" like MANY other media players do." I believe this is a feature iTunes NEEDS, especially for large libraries.
Drop a file or files into a folder that iTunes is watching....open iTunes and there it is.
Delete a file or files from a folder that iTunes is watching.... open iTunes and there is a warning "These files are missing, do you want them removed from the                                                                                                                                                             library or would you like to locate them?"

This is a user-to-user support forum. Apple don't read these pages for suggestions. Use iTunes Feedback for that. However this is a long-standing request from many users so my guess is, if it hasn't happened by now, it won't happen...
iTunes Folder Watch makes a good substitue for this missing feature.

  • Watch Folders forgets

I recently purchased a WD My Book for storing my pics.  On my wife's computer, I've pointed her watch folders at the UNC (\\nas\pics) folder and everytime I restart photoshop, when I go to watch folders, there are no folders listed.  Of course, it's also not picking up any new pics added to the drive.
I did the run as service fix already with no success.
If Adobe doesn't support network drives, is there another tool that will accomplish this?  My wife only uses Adobe PS8 for organizing and printing.  She needs a tool that will let her crop pictures and print to multiple page sizes. This last feature doesn't work well anywhere I've tried except PS8, in that she can print a 4x6 on an 8x11 page, or some other strange combo.  Everything else wants to print exact size to exact size.
I've got over 15,000 pics in raw and again in jpg formats and her laptop won't hold everything we have, and she wants access to the entire library.  Local store won't work.

    Hi there,
I have this problem whenever we reset our server. The watchfolders stop working.
The only fix I've found is to manually uncheck and the recheck (i.e disable then enable) each watchfolder in the FCS admin pane. This seems to give them the kick they need to start monitoring the folder. It doesn't take long to do for each watch folder, but it's not ideal. Does anyone have a better solution to this problem?
    Oli.

  • Convert ps to pdf  - watched folders process one at a time ?

does the destiller server process the watched folders one at a time or it can process several depending on the license?
i have the "normal" distiller and i have this problem, if a huge file is being converted, the other files from watched folders are not converted.

I think I found my answer at a different set of instuctions at http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat-com/kb/using-createpdf.html.  This set of instructions clearly indicates that files will be selected 1 at a time.
    Click Combine Files To PDF.
    Click Select Files.
Select one of the files that you want to combine.
    Click Open.
Click Add Files and select additional files to combine. Click Open."
If anyone has any ideas on how to more quickly combine files, any help would be greatly appreciated.
