"Watch Folders" in iTunes?

Why doesn't  itunes automatically update library when files are added or removed from folders ALREADY in the library? i.e. "Watch Folders" like MANY other media players do." I believe this is a feature iTunes NEEDS, especially for large libraries.
Drop a file or files into a folder that iTunes is watching....open iTunes and there it is.
Delete a file or files from a folder that iTunes is watching.... open iTunes and there is a warning "These files are missing, do you want them removed from the                                                                                                                                                             library or would you like to locate them?"

This is a user-to-user support forum. Apple don't read these pages for suggestions. Use iTunes Feedback for that. However this is a long-standing request from many users so my guess is, if it hasn't happened by now, it won't happen...
iTunes Folder Watch makes a good substitue for this missing feature.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps youshouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • How can I monitor folders in itunes?

    Hi,
I want to specify a folder (can use the itunes music folder location) and I want itunes to monitor that folder and add any new audio files added and remove any files that are dead (not there anymore). Is there a way for it to do this? I know Winamp has that facility and I'm confused why itunes didn't implement such a feature. It will definitely be useful.
    Plague

iTunes does not at present have any feature for watching folders and automatically importing tracks you add to a folder. Using strictly iTunes, you'll have to add any such tracks manually, by dragging them to the iTunes window or by using the Add To Library command. Here are a couple of potential solutions from other developers, though:
    http://albumbrowser.klarita.net/iTunesFolderWatch.html
    http://www.lifehacker.com/software/itunes/hack-attack-automatically-sync-itunes- to-any-folders-175161.php
I don't know if either solution will do the reverse; remove a listing from iTunes when you remove a track from the watched folder.

  • Removing folders that Itunes monitors for new music

How do I make it so Itunes wil stop looking for music in a particular folder that I did and "add folder to Library" on? I added a removable drive as a folder that Itunes searches for music on. Now I don't want itunes to look for music in that foler anymore how do I remove it from the folders that Itunes searches?

iTunes does not automatically watch folders for new music. The only exceptions are the one-time scan on a new install, and the new Automatically Add to iTunes folder that is new in iTunes 9. What are you trying to do?

  • How can I restore my playlist folders in itunes? They are there but the individual song titles aren't listed. They are only listed by album. This makes it very difficult to find songs in my playlist.  Also, when I click on music, it will not list options.

My itunes account is messed up. How can I restore my playlist folders in itunes? The list's are there but the individual song titles aren't. They are only listed by album. I can only see the song titles as they are played at the top of my itunes. This makes it very difficult to find songs in my playlist.  Also when in the itunes store, I am not able to see music genre choices, or search for a song or group.
    Thank you

    Hi dones49,
It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -
Locate and organize your iTunes files
If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -

I have an external server that stores all my movies and music, is there a way to stream it to my apple tv?
If not is there a way I can link the folders to itunes (without downloading files to computer) that will make them view-able for the apple TV?
If none of that works is there a way to get it working alternativly?
    Additional Information:
Everything is linked via ethernet cable.
I'm using a PC to set it up.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I'll help where I can.
    Thank you for any help

(I think the daughter got he better end of the deal!)   I believe if you change the password and user id one of the devices it will stop that from occurring. But I'm not the one to tell you how to do it; someone like "Illaass" (Illaass seems to know how to correct / fix almost anything!) will know how if you don't. Just look for the "cat" icon.

  • Convert ps to pdf  - watched folders process one at a time ?

does the destiller server process the watched folders one at a time or it can process several depending on the license?
i have the "normal" distiller and i have this problem, if a huge file is being converted, the other files from watched folders are not converted.

I think I found my answer at a different set of instuctions at http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat-com/kb/using-createpdf.html.  This set of instructions clearly indicates that files will be selected 1 at a time.
    Click Combine Files To PDF.
    Click Select Files.
Select one of the files that you want to combine.
    Click Open.
Click Add Files and select additional files to combine. Click Open."
If anyone has any ideas on how to more quickly combine files, any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Is it possible to process watch folders on a MAC (OS X) without being logged in?

We are running Adobe Media Encoder 5.5 on our MAC OS X system with a number of watch folders on our network. This works as expected while a user is logged onto the system but not when logged out. Is there any way to set this up so that AME will still process the watch folders even if the user is logged out?
    Thank you

I don't imagine it will.  If you're not logged onto the network, the program can't access the folder.  If you're not logged into the local user account, the program can't run.

As of June 2010 I no longer maintain this FAQ. I’ve migrated to Lightroom 3, which I use for all my organizing and most of my editing (I still use the Photoshop Elements Editor for more involved editing).  Adobe has clearly decided not to invest sufficient resources for properly maintaining the Photoshop Elements Organizer– see my Amazon review of PSE 8. Lightroom is marketed to professionals and prosumers with tens of thousands of photos who demand adequate organizational capabilities, whereas Photoshop Elements is marketed to consumers, most of whom do not want or use the Organizer.
This page captures my answers to frequent questions about Photoshop Elements 6, 7, and 8 (Windows).  It’s mostly about the Organizer, since I know the Organizer much better than the Editor.
The versions to which each FAQ applies are indicated with the notation [PSE 6, 7, 8]. If I’m not sure whether something applies to a version, it will be indicated with a question mark, e.g. [PSE 7, 8?].

  • Adobe Media Encoder CS5 Watch Folders

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I couldn't find an Adobe Media Encoder forum, and since we purchased After Effects to get Media Encoder I figured this might be a good place to start.
Basically, we have a dedicated computer set up with Adobe Media Encoder, and we set up several watch folders on a network drive. We have several files that must be several different codecs, so Media Encoder is really an awesome solution to this problem. However, the only problem we've been running into is sometimes Media Encoder doesn't actually watch a folder. For example, we have a "For web" folder and a "For VOD" folder. The for web folder has had absolutely no problems as far as watching and pulling in goes. The "For VOD" will sometimes not pick up files, but if media encoder is closed and then reopened, it picks up all of the files in that folder, but then again, will not pick up additional files in that folder.
The Media Encoder machine is running on Windows 7 (due to one of the codecs being Windows only), while all of the other machines in the department are macs. I have tested setting up the same system on one of our macs and we get the same problem. We are using an SMB network, but also have DAVE clients on all of our macs.
My initial theories are that it's either: A.) Something with the network, or B.) Something on the computer interupting the network connection. One of the IT guys briefly checked out the situation, changed around some network settings, and concluded that it must be an issue within Media Encoder itself.
Also, as a side note, I did check for updates with Adobe updater and everything is up to date.
Any ideas would be fantastic! And sorry if I'm leaving out crucial information in order to solve our situation, I'm not sure what all would be relevant, but just let me know what you would need!
    Thank you!

Typically, Adobe apps do not work as well in a networked environment.  You might try moving the watch folders to a local drive on the Win 7 machine and see if that makes any difference.  If it does, there's your solution.

  • No Wi-Fi after using Apple TV to watch video from iTunes?

After watching video from iTunes library on ATV2 , when trying to use mac afterwards wi-fi slow or stopped. I Have to unplug router to get it working again. Don't think its always being like this?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first.

  • Distiller Watched Folders not working Acrobat 9.5.2, Mountain Lion.

I have just installed Acrobat 9.5.2 on a new Mac running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. Watched Folders don't work. When a .ps file is placed in the IN folder, it get processed by Distiller, but no PDF file is produced. The Distiller log window claims the PDF has been produced and placed in the Out folder, but it's not there. The .ps file is moved or deleted, depending on the setting.
PS files can be dropped onto Distiller in the normal way and PDF files are produced correctly, so it's not a problem with permissions. The problem persists in a new user account, so it's not a User pref issue.
Another Mac with the same setup works fine, so it's not a compatibility bug. I have seen only one other forum page with a similar issue, relating to Distiller 6, but it's not clear what the solution was.

Thanks for the thought. No, it's not permissions. As I say, Distiller can distill a file that is drag 'n' dropped on it from that location and it will save a PDF file to that folder.
The problem occurs even when the folders are within the user domain, where permissions should not be an issue. It also happens on folders that have full rwxrwxrwx attributes.
Watched folders work fine on another computer with the same setup, so it isn't any annoying sandboxing that is stopping everyone from doing anything -- as you say!

  • Organized iPod playlists into folders in iTunes, but not showing up when iPod is disconnected. Please help!

I organized my iPod touch playlists into folders in iTunes on my computer (while my iPod was connected to my computer) but when I disconnect and go to use the iPod separately, the playlists that I organized do not show up in the folders they were put into. They're still all jumbled up, rather than in the playlist folders. The folders show up on my iPod, but some are empty and some have a few but not all of the correct playlists in them. How can I fix this?

    Freespirit777 wrote:
PLease note that you cannot organise ipod playlists or folders while it is NOT connected to iTunes, as you simply can't see them.
    Yes you can.
If I'm not mistaken, this thread was started prior to the release of iTunes 11. iTunes 11 does "hide" Playlists and Playlist Folders, until you turn the Sidebar back on, using CTRL+S. Also, the top menu bar is useful, and that can be turned on with CTRL+B. However, that aside, nothing has changed regarding Playlists, You can (and have always been able to) create, alter and manage Playlists without having an iPod connected to iTunes. You then allow a Sync to synchronise those Playlists to the iPod.
    So use CTRL+B and CTRL+S and make sure you have the top menu and the sidebar showing, like so;
Notice the Playlist Folder, that I've named "Test Folder". Inside it is a Smart Playlist ("Rating 1 star") and two regular Playlists ("Dummy list, do not use" & "Test list"). To create new ones of any of these items, click on the + symbol at the bottom of the iTunes Window (I've ringed it). You then see this:
So that sorts out creating and managing them in your iTunes Library.
    Freespirit777 wrote:
It looks like ipod doesn't have a folder function which is unhelpful and user unfriendly.
That's not correct. At least, not as far as the Playlist Folders we have been discussing.
    Once the Playlists are Synced to the iPod, looking in the Playlists section on my iPod Touch, shows this;
Notice the "Playlist Folder" (named Test Folder) on the list. Delving into that shows the three Playlists that we saw in iTunes. Notice the name of the Playlist Folder at the top, and the three Playlists in it, listed below (in alphabetical order):
One thing that may be of further use to you; while arranging my iPod to get the screenshots, I found that it took two attempts to get the Playlists fully Synced with my iPod (I use "Sync selected playlists" with it). So if your first Sync doesn't put everything onto your iPod, try a second Sync.

    Photo folders in itunes?
There are no photo folders in itunes.
You can sync photo folders via itunes. I sync several albums from iphoto with my ipod classic.
Go under the photo tab and look at the choices.
