Watch fullscreen on an external monitor?

Hi,
I have a mid-2009 and later MBP. I am using an external display - connecting a Dell 2407WFP monitor using a DVI cable and a MiniDisplay to DVI adapter to my MBP.
I am trying to watch a flash-based video in a Safari window which I have dragged over to the external display, in FULLSCREEN mode. The flash video can be seen fullscreen, while my Chrome browser window can be seen in regular mode on my MBP. However, the moment I click anywhere on the Chrome window to type or anything, the Safari window in the external display goes from fullscreen into regular mode. Any time I type or click anywhere on my MBP, the fullscreen display becomes a regular display on the external monitor.
I tried doing this with the flash video in a Safari tab opened on the external display with other Safari windows on the MBP, but that didn't work either. I tried it with a Word document and other things on the external display, but nothing stay fullscreen on it.
Any suggestions?!?

I have the most current versions of Firefox, Safari and Chrome all installed as well as the latest version of Flash Player (as of today - 12/31/11) and I also cannot get the flash player windows to stay full screen when I click elsewhere on the main display.
The weird thing is, though, is that I can get it to work sometimes. It seems totally random and there isn't a fool-proof method to make it work every time, at least that I have found - but I can get it to do it occasionally.
I am trying to do this with NBA League Pass Broadband service. According to Adobe this is supposed to work as of v10.2, but so far it seems they haven't quite fixed it...
OSX 10.6.8, iMac 27" quad-i7, btw - if it matters.

  • Watch fullscreen movie on 2nd monitor & work on my MBP @ the same time?

I hooked up a 2nd monitor to my MBP (mini to VGA) and figured out how to have an extended desktop. It's a little tricky adjusting where the pointer will be (I don't totally understand it, but with trial and error and lots of persistence, I finally got it to ALMOST be set up the way I'd like).
I have a movie (.avi file) playing on the 2nd monitor and I'm able to work on my MBP, but I can't figure out how to view the movie fullscreen because when I get the 2nd monitor fullscreen, my MBP screen goes fullscreen as well (and of course the dock and any form of control disappear as my MBP screen is just dark and blank).
Does anyone know the trick to getting the setup that I want? FULLSCREEN 2nd monitor to watch .avi files while working on my MBP???
I could really use some help on this one! THANK YOU, oh knowledgeable one(s) who reply!!!

You won't be able to do it with the included QuickTime media player. But it can be done with other media players like MPlayer or VLC I am pretty sure. Haven't had this exact need myself but have seen other similar threads and recall the above being recommended. Good luck.

  • Fullscreen video playback on external monitor (overlay problem?)

I want to watch videopodcasts via iTunes fullscreen on my external Monitor/TV. It works fine with Quicktime and WindowsMediaPlayer but iTunes doesn't play my Videos in Fullscreen on my external Monitor.
I had the idea it is because the overlay mode isn't siwtched on but I can't find where to setup the display mode of video playback in iTunes.
    Can anybody help me?
    Bernd.

    oh, no...
i thouhght the iTunes Videoplayback would rely on Quicktime and thus it would be possible.
    isn't there any other possibilty?

  • External monitor iMac

Worth while, ie will it escape the problem, to get external monitor vertical line issue for iMac,5 ?  Which one?
iMAc getting old (2008), but quite reliable otherwise.

I have a similar problem with my MacBookPro. I want to watch movies on my external monitor in full screen while using my regular monitor to work. I also cannot do this because the regular monitor blacks out after going to full screen on the external monitor.
I think there is no way to use multiple monitors when using full screen because it is programmed like this, but I consider this a bug. Can updates of iTunes offer the option to not black out all "non-used" monitors while viewing movies in full screen on one particular monitor?

  • Slow video on external monitor in fullscreen

    Hey guys,
I'm running a 24 inch cinema display external off the old generation Macbook. Recently, my 120 gb hard drive locked up and I had to replace it with a newer 500 gb drive (which I outfitted with the same software I had on my old drive). I used to be able to run movies full screen on my cinema display (with the old drive) with no problems. I could watch youtube and downloaded movies in full screen and full quality: life was awesome (with both displays, the laptop and the external, simultaneously running).
Now... full screen is awful. Its choppy and annoying to watch on the cinema display. They work fine when you shrink the video to half the size of the screen, but the quality suffers noticeably once you go past this limit.
Full screen DOES work on the laptop display, though. It just seems like an enormous waste of $600 to not use the external.
Does anyone know how I can rescue the fullscreen quality that I had in my old setup? It doesn't make sense that replacing my old hard drive with a new one (with superior memory capacity and speed) should hinder the utility of my external monitor.
    Please help!

This is happening because video goes full screen on the primary display ..
to change follow these simple steps
    * Open System Preferences
    * Click on the Display icon
    * Click on the ‘Arrangement’ tab
    * Click and hold on the white bar at the top of the current primary display
    * Drag the white bar across to the monitor you want to set as the new primary display for your Mac
    I hope this helps

  • External monitor fullscreen

Pretty straight forward issue.  My external monitor extends the edges of the screen out past the viewable portion of the screen itself.  IE when I put youtube/vlc/anything into fullscreen all the edges are chopped off.  Top bottom left and right.  I tried all sorts of adjustments on the TV I think this has something to do with the macbook.  Any suggestions?

    Hello there, NogDog21.
The following Knowledge Base article should help resolve issues with your display:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573
    Particularly:
How do I select additional resolutions on my display?
You can use the Display pane of System Preferences to specify how your display works. Not all options appear for all display models. By default the best resolution for your display will already be selected in System Preferences.
To select a different resolution, use the Scaled option. Some additional resolutions may be available when you hold the Option button.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • Satellite U305: cannot watch videos on external monitor running Vista with Dynadock

    Hi Fellows,
I have one Satellite U305 running Windows Vista, I bought also one Dynadock VGA with external HP 20" monitor.
I have uppdated all Dynadock drives (Audio, Video, etc) to the latest version, but DVD Video or MPEG Video recorded with my camera is no possible to watch on extended monitor only in the primary monitor (notebook monitor).
For exemple my Toshiba DVD Player works normally on Notebook monitor but when I transfer the window to extended monitor, Toshiba DVD Player stops to work.
Video doesnt work on extended monitor.
Is it correct or Do I made something wrong configuration? Is it a bug? If it is a bug, how to solve this bug?
I am worry because I bough a big external monitor to watch some movies that I can not watch it.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
    Nilton

I am sorry that I have to tell you that mate, but it wont be possible to watch any kind of realtime content through your dynadock. It is not designed for that.
The USB-Connection has not enough bandwidth to transfer this amount of data that is needed to have a "real" dvi / vga picture on our monitor. It is just made for Office use, e.g. E-Mail, Word etc.
If you can, bring it back and look for another solution...

  • Browser window open on laptop, and movie in fullscreen on external monitor???

I recently got a monitor as a second display for my laptop.
I tried to play a movie in fullscreen mode on the external monitor and
have a browser window open on my laptop screen.
Fullscreen mode puts the movie in its own desktop/space and when switch to it
with a gesture, My laptop screen also switches to a respective/designated (but blank) space.
So I cannot at the moment see both windows on different displays at the same time...
Is there any way to do this ???

When you first hook it up it will probably have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen. In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to use the MacBook’s keyboard and trackpad to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.

  • QuickTime and iTunes video playing fullscreen on external monitor automatic

Hello, on my Toshiba laptop with nVidia video card, I have an external monitor hooked up to the laptop. Every time I go to play video from QuickTime or iTunes, it plays the video at full screen size on the external monitor while also playing in the normal small window of QuickTime or iTunes on the main (laptop) LCD. I don't have the QuickTime Pro key installed on this machine, nor have I somehow selected to play videos at full screen. It does this whether I want to do it or not, which is quite annoying as the full screen version is usually flickering to boot.
Help please. I've looked in the QuickTime Control Panel and don't see anything that would cause this problem, nor in iTunes.
    Cheers, Andrew.

A couple of things you might want to try. Open the QT Player settings, not to be confused with the QT Control panel. There should be settings in there for monitors and dual monitors I believe.
For the flickering, open the Display control panel>Settings>Advanced>Monitor. Listed under Monitor settings-Screen refresh rate: try changing the setting to 85 Hertz.

  • External Monitoring - HD Footage, NTSC Monitor

My husband and I are having a issue and have pulled out our hair trying to figure it out.
Using voltaicHD we got the AVCHD footage into Final Cut Express 4 (on G5)...
We've got it in the appropriate timeline for editing.
However, we aren't getting a signal out to our external monitors...
Setup is this... We go via FireWire to a JVC miniDV/DVD deck (sr-dvm700), which is then connected to a samsung LCD tv via component cables (hdd/DVD) and s-video (miniDV)... BNC cable goes from deck to broadcast safe monitor (JVC tm-h150). This all works fine with sequence set for DV-NTSC (720x480).
however, with sequence set for HD... If we go through Easy Setup on Final Cut Express and select DV-NTSC we are not getting any signal... This is with the sequence set to Apple Intermediate Codec 720/30.
In the Easy Setup drop down, if we select HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720/30 we still get no output. When we select it, it tells us to set device control to HDV-NTSC but we cannot figure out where to change that.
What are we missing? How do we get this to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well after researching and researching, I set up the computer with the HDTV as a 2nd monitor. Using the Cinema Preview (Fullscreen) function, I can see the video we're editing on the fullscreen Samsung HDTV.
    DVI-to-HDMI adaptor was the solution.
I realize this may not be the best solution for color correction, but it IS a solution for now... and one that is affordable. Where I finally got the tip that got me off in the right direction was from a guy on YouTube...
    Frank's Tech Help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMNLOVn8hes
It wasn't the exact solution for me - but got me started in the right direction.
The G5 I have has the GEForce 5200 Ultra card, which has a DVI and ADC connector.
I used a DVI-to-HDMI adaptor to go to the HDTV.
I used and ADC-to-DVI adaptor to connect to my LCD monitor (what was originally hooked up to the computer).
Then in the settings for Displays, I set the resolution and arrangement of the monitors. By dragging the menu bar from the TV Display to the Monitor (in the arrangement dialog) it set the LCD Display as monitor #1.
Now, in Final Cut Express, all I need to do is go to View... Video Out... Cinema Preview (Fullscreen) and in addition to my timeline playing on the canvas, it plays in full screen HD on the Samsung HDTV.
While no one here gave me the answer, maybe my reply will give the answer to someone else who isn't ready to spend the money on Final Cut Pro (since this isn't the FCP Forum) and an expensive IO Card.

  • External Monitor with iTunes - iMac screen goes black

I have an iMac with iTunes 7.7/Leopard and an external VGA monitor (I use the standard Apple mini-DVI to VGA converter) then I use the external monitor to watch video from my iTunes library.
All works well - I have my desktop spread over both monitors, I fire up a movie from iTunes, move the video window across to the external monitor and everything is good - I can watch the video on the external monitor whilst continuing to work on my Mac - the iMac screen displays the Mac desktop as normal.
However, if I put the movie into fullscreen mode (view -> fullscreen on the iTunes menu), the external monitor displays the movie in fullscreen mode as it should, however the iMac monitor goes black.
The only way to fix this is to exit fullscreen mode and go back to one of the view options (rg fit to screen).
Any ideas how I can have my external monitor in fullscreen mode and have my desktop back?
    Many thanks

  • [openbox] External monitor setup

    Hi guys,
I'm curious to know how you handle a second monitor. Coming from Gnome I was used to have some more comfort with that.
    How it should be
    1. I plug in the monitor and nothing happens automatically. Can this be done automatically?
    2. Anyway, not a problem, I can use arandr to activate the external monitor. But how can I for example map the second desktop of openbox to that screen? That is, the first desktop should be mapped to my laptop screen, the second to the external monitor.
    3. When I plug off the external monitor all previous settings should be restored, showing all my windows on only my laptop screen.
    Regards

orschiro wrote:1. The list of windows opened through ALT+TAB is only visible on the second screen. However I want it to have on my laptop screen.
You should be able to fix this with the "<monitor>" option in the "<placement>" section. If you want the ALT+TAB dialog on the active screen, use "<monitor>Active</monitor>". If you always want it on one particular screen, try a specific number. (If "<monitor>1</monitor>" does not work, try "<monitor>2</monitor>".)
orschiro wrote:2. I'm using adeskbar as a panel bar. Does anyone know how to restrict the size of the bar only to the left/laptop screen?
I'm not familiar with adeskbar, but it is certainly possible that adeskbar does not support multi-head setups.
orschiro wrote:3. Viewing flash video in fullscreen over the second monitor does not cover the whole screen but only the resolution of my native screen (1280x800 px). How can I run flash files in fullscreen (it's a monitor with ~1600 x... px) over the second screen?
    I found this and this.
Otherwise, I get this problem too. It seems like some people believe it's a problem with the player or flash itself rather than the window manager. (Think about it---the window manager isn't going to choose the resolution at which flash displays video.) I've simply resigned to live with it and watch full screen flash on the monitor that it shows correctly on.
Also, since you're using Openbox with multiple monitors, check out Openbox Multihead.

  • Black border on DVD playback with external monitor...why?

    Hi all,
I've got a late 2011 MBP 13". Very happy with it (although use is limited as a DJ laptop - and, since I moved abroad, as the basis for a home cinema) and was quite happy to watch films / TV on it as it came. However, I wanted to be able to watch with other people and so have invested in an external monitor.
I have bought a Philips 23" V-line (model number 236V3L). I am completely happy with the picture quality etc but just have an issue during DVD playback:
The image (on fullscreen mode) has a 2" black border all the way round. I've tried fiddling with settings etc but can't seem to lose it...and don't know why. I wouldn't mind but obviously my 23" image is significantly smaller as a result.
Can anyone tell me why? When using the laptop in any other way (i.e. whilst typing this post) there is a 3/4" border on the left and on the right (but not at the top). Is it something to do with the aspect ratio? Is there anything I can do to fix it?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts...
    Regards,
    Fin

I use my laptop and a Samsung SyncMaster as my main screen and my MBP as the secondary. I can drag the DVD window to the laptop screen, and then put it in full screen mode. Here is where the problem lies: When I click any application on the primary monitor, the DVD screen shrinks back to normal size.
In DVD Player's "Full Screen" preference. enable "Remain in full screen when DVD PLayer is inactive".

  • How to connect macbook to both LCD TV & external monitor?

    Hi,
I would like to connect my macbook to both my lcd tv and external monitor. However, I only need either the tv or monitor to be on at any one time. Cause when i'm during my work, I need my external monitor. But when I wanna watch movies, I want to watch it only lcd tv.
Any ideas? Is there some sort of switch? I don't want to keep changing the display connections all the time.
I understand there is a usb display connection to the mac but I do not need both the lcd tv and external monitor to be on at the same time.
    Thanks in advance.

You will need a mini display/dvi converter:
