Watching a DVD with srt subtitles

Hi there,
Recently I bought a french DVD which turned out to have no subtitles. I did find subtitles for that movie on the Internet.
Now, how can I watch the DVD on my Mac without having to merge the subtitles with a DVD-rip? Is it possible to do that with DVD Player or another (preferably free) app? I have VLC but it only opens subs from a DVD.
Thanks.

It's not pretty, but you can do it VLC and Apple's DVD player together.
Start VLC and click "Open File" (not "Quick Open File") in the "File" menu.
Click "Browse" and find a movie at least as long as the DVD movie.
Click the "Open" button.
Check "Load subtitles file" and click "Settings".
Click "Browse", find your subtitles file ( ,srt, or .idx if you have .idx and .sub)
Click the "Open" button.
Click the "OK" button.
Click the "OK" button.
Click the Pause button.
Click "Mute" in the "Audio" menu.
Select the desired "Subtitles Track" in "Video" menu.
Move the VLC window down on the screen.
Start playing the DVD with Apple's DVD player.
Position the DVD window over the VLC window, leaving just the bottom (subtitle) part of the VLC window visible.
When you reach the start of the actual movie, click VLC's Play button.
Click the DVD Player icon in the dock, so get the DVD window back on top.
Start eating popcorn.
If you are going to do this often, you may want to make a custom, long, solid black, movie, (extreme film noir) to avoid distracting backgrounds under the subtitles. This movie should compress to a very small file. if you pick the right codec.

  • DVD with Graphic Subtitles crash

    Hi,
I've created a dvd with one track and subtitles at every 10 minutes (for watermarking), during 30 secondes. These are graphic subtitles. The Dvd is auto-run, no menu, no loop, no chapter. The movie plays fine in the simulator and in Apple Dvd player once compiled. But, the dvd burned, crashes in the Apple DVD player when it plays on a subtitle.
If I skip forward the subtitles, the player don't crash, neither if I play it on a hardware player (Pioneer, Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony). I suppose it's a DVD Studio Pro problem because I tried on a older version of Apple DVD Player, with Mac OSX 10.4 and it crashes too.
    Can't anybody help me!?
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • How can I convert video with srt subtitles?

If I have an avi plus an .srt subtitles file, how can I convert this to play on the iPad?
If, on my iMac, I use Quicktime, I can save the avi as .mov with hard subs.  But when I convert this .mov to mp4, the subtitles disappear.

Why go to all the trouble of converting? Why not just download an app that can play .avi files with subtitle support?

  • Make a DVD with *only* subtitles on it?

crazy question: can I make a "film" that consists of only a subtitle track and nothing else?
I have a special need: I need to make a DVD that can played in the cinema "on top of" a 35mm film. In other words, I have the picture on film already, I am just looking for a cheap and cheeky way to subtitle films for the festival that I work for.
I thought I could just import the film, make the subs, and then throw away the picture track and then build the DVD. Doesn't seem to work.
Is this possible? Can anyone suggest a way I can get this to work?

nah, do NOT use DVD subtitles for this.
They are bad enough already...(with just 3 colors and transparant)
Create a black video clip with rendered titles in it.
To ensure quality, make the subs as large as possible (to fill the most of the horizontal space you have, so you have max resolution, do not project the same size as the movie, set the projector for the subs way smaller (otherwise the lack of light vs the 35 mm will be totally obvious).
It sounds like a nice idea, but besides the quality of the video projection (you need LIGHT!!!), you cannot have a border / shadow...
And, it will be difficult to start in sync and stay in sync.
I would test this way before commiting yourself to it.

  • I have apple TV, an aux DVD drive, 2 new flat screen TVs, and apparently watching a DVD with apple devices is beyond their technology... highly upset

I have apple TV, and apple aux dvd drive, 2 new flat screens, $5,000 worth of hardware and facy technology that apparently will not play a freaking movie... please tell me this isnt true..

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iDVD are you using?
what system version are you running?
how did you create the DVD disk you're trying to play?
    what fixes have you tried?
how much free space on your boot drive?
Did you follow this recommended workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Tip: (Cyrillic) .srt subtitles with QuickTime Player!

Thanks to the great team that is behind the Perian project we can now watch XviD, DIvX, whatever codec video content complete with .srt subtitle tracks inside QuickTime Player, Front Row and everywhere else you can play quicktime files. The function is not part of the Perian version available for download just yet, you have to compile it yourself using Apple's Xcode tools and the source code available from perian.org via subversion, but it is really, really easy! I've posted detailed instructions on my blog at http://etosx.blogspot.com for those who have not played with Xcode.

  • Totem + GStreamer + srt subtitle : Internal data flow error

    Hello all,
I am trying to watch a video with a subtitle in "srt" format, with Totem + GStreamer.
I get a popup with the error message : "Internal data flow error" and my video cannot play.
If I remove the subtitle file, I have no problem watching the video. I do not have this problem with totem + xine, but I want to use gstreamer ...
I have posted a bug report at Gnome.
Do you have the same issue ?
    Can any body help ?
    Thank you very much
    Cheers,

Thank you Don-DiZzLe for your help
I have tried with totem-xine and it worked. But there is something annoying with totem-xine : you cannot change the subtitle font size
That is why I tried totem-gstreamer and found this bug.
This is supposed to work according to GStreamer's website, so if I could help fixe this I would be very happy

  • Will Encore let me write DVDs with sidecar (e.g. SRT) subtitle options?

I am considering a Creative Cloud membership in order to use Encore but I'm not sure if it can do what I need.
I need to write a DVD, or more specifically, the necessary image files from which DVDs can be written.
The DVDs need menus with chapter options and options to toggle subtitles on/off.
Does Encore work with .SRT files or if not what sidecar subtitle options are there?
    Thanks.

There are three options (all called "scripts") for bringing subtitles into Encore, but (I think) they all get baked into the DVD structure as overlays that are basically images.
Text file scripts often have issues of  font, formatting, etc. Image files avoid many of these.
    Adobe Encore * Subtitle scripts
The issue I see for you is that you will have to downrez and recompress the mp4s for DVD. It is better to export the DVD files from the editing software or a lossless intermediate.

  • Rip a DVD with subtitles (owned by me)

    Hi all. The quick background:
My company made a series of films (before i joined them) which was delivered on DVD some time ago and since then some of the original projects have been lost (Don't ask how this was allowed to happen!). Our client has asked if i can supply them with two of the sections from the disc as quicktimes for them to use in a presentation.
I have used Mpeg streamclip to rip one of the sections and the result is perfect. The problem is the second section which has subtitles on it.
How do i rip the file and keep the subtitles?
    Thanks in advance

If you have an A/D converter or can use your camcorder as such you can use this roundabout method.
    1. Connect DVD player's AV outputs to converter which is connected to Mac.
    2. Open FCP and change Easy Setup to Converter.
    3. Play DVD with subtitles switched on and capture into FCP.
    4. Once in FCP export as a QuickTime Movie.

i searched discussions for this question but wasn't sucessful ... so here's my question:
i use a toshiba pc laptop and an iMac G5 ... in order to watch dvds (with different region codes) on my PC, I use VLC with great success ... I wanted to do the same on my iMac, but came across the following problem:

'open with VLC' option when I right-click the DVD ... I can open single chapters of the DVD by opening the single .vob files, but I'm not happy with doing that ...
any ideas how to make watching DVDs with VLC on my iMac as easy as it is on my laptop?
    thanx for your help!

If you want all video DVDs to open in VLC, go to System Preferences>CDs & DVDs>When you insert a video DVD:>Open other application> and now select VLC.
This will open VLC, but the DVD will not automatically play, you have to go to File>Open Disc once in VLC.
One question though, why not use Apple's DVD player Application?

  • Satellite A105-S2101 - Can't watch DVDs with Express Media Player

I got this Satellite A105-S2101 notebook computer, and the LCD blew out on me within 2 years.
Luckily, I can still make use of the VGA, and S-Video outputs, but it may as well be a desktop PC now. Anyway, I just wanted to add that because of this problem, I no longer am able to watch DVDs with Express Media Player because it wont accept VGA or S-Video as defaults just my busted-up, good-for-nothing, always blurry anyway LCD.
It's only when I am in Windows mode that I can toggle to an external monitor.
The reason I write is, if there ever was a need to add anything for an update to EMP--now's the time and that would be something to add to it. What the heck?

    Hi
I think the Express Media Player does not run in Windows mode
I mean it's not neccessary to run the Windows OSin order to run Express Media Player and therefore the video output does not work in connection with EMP.
I think you will have to use an Windows based software player VLC player is very nice. I use it too its small, free tool and you can play almost all files audio and video.

  • Make a new DVD with subtitles from original DVD

Hello, i am trying to make a new DVD with subtitles from an original DVD a friend has sent to me in order to add the .*** file with the titles done with Jubler. My question is : I am converting the video ts folder of the original DVD with MPEG Streamclip to get a format that is possible to import with iDVD. so which is the best conversion for iDVD?

My recollection is a bit fuzzy, but I think an older version of Quicktime (6?) still supported text tracks with transparent backgrounds. You might have to dig around to verify that, and it's an option, but here's a whole different approach...
What do you think about using software like SnapZ Pro to record the version playing on your screen? It is taking video screen shots, so it won't be confused by the additional video layer (of text).

  • No SRT subtitles via DLNA on Samsung ue48js9000 with my book live 4TB

Hi,I just bought the new Samsung ue48js9000 uhd and cannot play SRT subtitles via DLNA / Network (tried cable and Wifi) with WD my book live 4TB. Embebed subtitles in MKV play ok. SRT subtitles play ok if connected via USB drive to OCB. With other TV's at home SRT subtitles play fine via DLNA / Network (Samsung F7000 and D6500). FW Versions are (latest I can find by 30.JUL.2015):Samsung JS900: 1214WD My Cloud: v04.01.04-422DLNA Media Server (Twonky): 7.2.9_7.5.0-43  Tried to rebuid database and configurations on the twonky access port :9000 with different settings for the TV with no differente results (Generic Media Receiver, Samsung TV, ...) - note that it defaults do "Samsung Smart TV" which I beleive to be ok. Any help would be appreciated. Best regards,

If this is the case then you should contact Samsung to see if there is a firmware or app update for your TV. Otherwise about the only other suggestion I have at the moment, if the SRT files display properly on other devices that access the WD My Cloud, is to check the Twonky Server settings on the WD My Cloud to see how the Twonky server is treating your TV in the "Media Receiver Type" field under Sharing -> Media Receiver. If the value for "Media Receiver Type" is something other than "Samsung TV" or "Samsung Smart TV" then you may have to change the value and test to see if it fixes the issue. For more information on how to access the Twonky Server on the WD My Cloud see the following WD Support link: How to access the Twonky Media Server on a WD NAS
