Watching cable on my imac

How can we legally watch cable on our Mac? Our subdivision includes free cable w/ our rent. However, we've never used it. We only have computers, & no tvs. We want to watch the olympics, & be able to see the commentaries, athlete highlights, etc, not just watch generic live streaming, which will be at inconvienent times. We would need the local channels. Our cable company says we can only watch cable via an actual tv monitor. Surely this isn't truly the case, is it?
It looks like MacTV pro is a scam.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

No sure wht you mean by the 2nd to last sentence but I suspect you are misguided.
At any rate look at www.Elgato.com

  • Watching cable tv on iMac

Am trying to figure out the best way to watch TV on my iMac using my Comcast cable service.  I've tried the ElgatoHD but it only allows me to view non-encrypted channels (that would otherwise be available over the airwaves) but I would like to be able to watch the encrypted Comcast channels that I am currently paying for such as ESPN, CNN, Bravo, etc.

SlingBox would work, from what I've read. It essentially takes over your cable box; the cable box does all the channel selection and decoding, and the Slingbox just takes the video output and sends it across your network. If that suits your needs, a Slingbox might do the job. You may want a second cable box, though.
    This might be of interest:

If all you want is output from your cable box, the Slingbox Solo might be sufficient, and is signficantly less expensive than the Slingbox 500. Sling has refurbished units going for $99.95 right now on their web site.

  • Cable TV on iMac?

I have a 27" iMac (only a few months old, running Lion OSX). I'm selling my TV because I am moving to LA part time but would like to keep basic cable in tact at my current apartment. One option is EyeTV which seems to be the most superior option. Another option is the Miglia Evolution TV tuner. I found the Miglia one used for 25 bucks on Craigslist and due to budget reasons I'd prefer to buy that one for now.
Can anyone tell me how it works? What software do I need to use to be able to watch cable on my iMac with Miglia? Any advice? Thanks in advance!

The iMac does not have video input. Therefore, you must add video input using USB. There are popular solutions from Miglia and Elgato. Be sure to read the descriptions and system requirements for the product to ensure they work with PowerPC and your Mac OS X version.
I have this product, and it does what you describe.

You connect it to a direct USB port on the iMac (does not work through a hub connection). You connect the output of your cable box, either composite (RCA) or S-Video (but not coax cable), to the device. You can connect audio to the device (red/white RCA connectors) or directly to your iMac's audio input port. You run the included software, which is video capture software, and it displays the "live" video input in a window. You can change the size of the window or go to full screen mode. This product I use is for standard definition, not "HD."
Other products may use different software, but they would work in the same way.

  • Is there a way to watch VerizonFIOS cable TV on iMAC using HDMI Input?

I have a 2014 iMac.  I recently moved and now have VerizonFIOS cable.  The output for the cable box is HDMI.  From what I can see on the back of my iMac, I have two Thunderbolt ports, and multiple USB 3 ports.  Is there a way to use the HDMI cable from the cable box so I can watch TV on my iMac?

Not directly, I recommend contacting Elgato.com and see which of their products suits your needs. Apple doesn't put TV tuners in their computers, that is why you need an Elgato device.

  • How to watch TV on my iMAC 21.5 from my HD Cablebox?

What is the best way for me to watch TV on my iMAC 21.5 from my HD Cablebox?  According to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKacgqxqH-Q I understand that I can watch HD channels on my iMAC via the firewire cable.  The You Tube video says that I need the following utilities: (1) VLC (2) AVC Browser. According to You Tube video you need to get it from the Apple Developer Connection Website.  I'm not sure how to get there and how to find the AVC Browser. Does anyone know how to get the AVC Browser?
If this doesn't work, does anyone know of another solution so that I can watch TV on my iMAC 21.5 from my HD Cablebox?

2011 ThunderBolt iMac only accept other ThunderBolt Macs as source.
The Intensity Extreme http://www.blackmagic-design.com/uk/products/intensity/ might be what you need once it is released.
For the 2009 and 2010 27" iMacs there is the Kanex XDhttp://www.kanexlive.com/xd but it is not compatible with ThunderBolt iMacs as Kanex states in their Product FAQs.
Plus it maxes out with 720p input with the iMacs.

  • How can I watch TV on my iMac?

    Hello,
I have just bought a 27" iMac yesterday and I am wondering if I am able to watch TV on it as it is in my bedroom and positioned in front of my bed. The previous computer I had, had a built in Freeview TV with a remote that allowed me to watch TV on it. I have a cable which  allows me to receive TV behind the computer which is not plugged, but it was plugged into my previous computer and allowed me to watch TV.
So what I'm wondering is that, is there any way I could receive/watch TV on my iMac? Even if I have to purchase any other things for the iMac, etc.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't know anything about EyeTV so wouldn't want to comment - maybe others here will offer advice.
What you could do for a lot less money, is install VPNOneClick Pro from the App store. Info here:
http://www.vpnoneclick.com/ (I imagine there are alternatives, but it's the app I use).
I'm from the UK, living in France - it offers a good way of keeping up with the programmes in the UK .
If you have an iPad, also have a look at the app FilmOn... Live.

I do not know how to do this with an Apple TV (I don't have one), but as far as I know Apple TV only does mirroring.
If you have an HDMI cable long enough to reach your TV from where you sit, then it's easy. The TV could be set up in Extended Desktop mode (mirroring off) as if it was simply another computer monitor, and then you could just drag windows to it. If you have the Displays icon in your menu bar, that's where the setting is, or if the icon is not there, then the setting is in the Displays system preference. But again, that's for conventionally connected monitors, not Apple TV. If you don't have an HDMI cable and wanted a long one that's affordable you can get those at monoprice.com.
The answer we are still waiting for is if anyone knows if Apple TV can be used in extended desktop (non-mirroring) mode.

  • Cable TV on iMac G5

I know it's possible to display cable TV on PC desktops. Is it possible to watch cable TV on the iMac G5? What equipment is needed other than a comcast cable subscription? Thanks in advance for your input.

  • What is the best solution to watch cable TV wirelessly on my MacBook Pro?

Hi all. I know this isn't a direct AppleTV question but I thought I may find a solution in this forum.
I just purchased a MacBook Pro and I want to watch cable TV wirelessly. I have an old Formac Studio TVR thats held up pretty well over the years which I have hooked up via FireWire to my PowerMac.
    I have...
    -Comcast Cable Box w/DVR
    -Formac TVR
    -Netgear WPN824 v2 Router (ethernet 10/100 only)
-MacBook Pro (core 2 duo 2.4ghz)
I'm open to purchasing new items but I want to hear what solution works best before doing so. I've seen some specs on Slingbox but I wonder if Apple has or is working on a solution.
    thanks in advance.

I have the $149 Slingbox Solo. It connects directly to my Digital Cable box/DVR. You can watch it on a wired or wireless connection. Quality varies according to the speed of the connection. On a local network, the quality is actually excellent. You control the box by an on-screen remote control. As note by others, you can watch remotely from anywhere with an internet connection. It works very well with my Mac as well as various laptops (MacBook pro and a Sony Viao). I also have an Elgato and a Miglia tuner - neither of which can do anything wirelessly. The Slingbox does take control of the cable box. Overall, I am very impressed with the Slingbox and would highly recommend it.

  • If I initially rent and begin watching a movie on my Apple TV (2nd Gen) can I later change and finish watching it on my iMac (same iTunes account)?

If I initially rent and begin watching a movie on my Apple TV (2nd Gen) can I later finish watching it on my iMac (registered with same iTunes account)?

The other way to do this would be to download all your rentals onto the Mac, then you can choose watch them on the Mac or Airplay them to the ATV.
At least that way you can switch back and forth as often as you like during the "watching" period AND have 1 month to begin watching it after you've downloaded it.

I have a Sony DCR-TRV33 camcorder and it hooked to my iMac with the firewire cable but the iMac doesn't seem to recognize the camera.  The camera is set to VCR.  This particular model is not included in the supported camera list for ilife but seems to be compatible from everything else I have read.  Anyone have any ideas as to what to do??

To import from this camera, you need a Firewire cable.
Sony's name for FireWire is i.Link, so that is where you need to plug in.
If you have a relatively new Mac, it will have Firewire 800. You will need a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable. You can find them inexpensively at www.monoprice.com.  If you have an older iMac, it may have Firewire 400 (or it may have both). In this case, you need the  6 pin to 4 pin Firewire cable. Some companies sell adapters that will convert a 6 pin to 4 pin cable to 9 pins. Avoid these. They do not work.
