Watching DVD's on my TV

I have a Satellite 5100 and often watch killer movies on its DVD player. I am wondering if I can optimize the TV playback results.

Hey! Are you using the WinDVD video player that comes with your laptop? Do not use the LCD/TV option in the display driver settings with the WinDVD software player. By default the display driver is set to high colour (32 bit) for best picture and performance. Unfortunately you can't watch your movies on your TV and on your monitor at the same time. But I don't think that is too major an issue. Do you know how to toggle between the two?

  • How do I turn off computer monitor when watching DVD movie on TV monitor?

I think this is really a Leopard question because it involves setting up 2 monitors in System Preferences within OSX. 1) I have a wide screen TV connected to my iMac (Intel White Late 2006) through the Mini-DVI port and a separate audio cable. This connection works fine. 2) The purpose of the TV screen is only to watch DVDs using the DVD player and iDVD in my iMac. 3) In System Preferences->Displays->Arrangement, both my computer monitor and the TV screen appear as separate monitors. I have the setting to mirror each other. With this setting, the DVD movie plays on both the iMac computer screen and on the TV screen. 4) FINALLY, MY QUESTION: When watching a DVD on the TV screen, I would like to turn off the monitor in my iMac so that the screen is dark (in sleep mode to save power, etc.); I want only the TV screen to display the movie. How do I turn off only the iMac screen? Thank you. Dale

That's impossible. It can only be done on a laptop but not on an iMac.

  • Can't watch dvds any more. Error: RADIO. What's that suppose to me

Title says basically everything I need to know. Why, when I use the remote to open the creative media source engine to play a dvd and I try playing it it says Error: Radio. I mean, come on, what's the Radio got to do with watching Dvds? I get a nero dvd encoder error or something when I try using InterActual, so I end up just using either Windows media player or VLC. I use VLC instead because I basically use it for everything video related. My point is, I need help. How do I get rid of this Radio error message and play some dvds? I've tried reinstalling and everything as well. I want to use the program because I can use the remote with it. I removed the front cover of my case just to use this remote but now I cant really.
Specs: ASUS a8n32-sli deluxe, 7800gt, x-fi fataly Rev A with a heat sink on it, amd 3800x2, TWINX2048-3500LLPRO Corsair ram, and.... some sony dvd dual layer burners, oh yea, windows 64bit sp.
I used to be able to play movies on my old abit an8-sli, but since I've switched, It's been doing this. It's also harder to install this card on this motherboard because the cd drivers will not detect the card after you install drivers from the cd, I end up downloading the beta drivers off of creative to install, but did not try downloading media source from there for I dont know if it would do the same and if it would work with the remote. Games and everything plays fine besides some times the card mixes sounds that should be going to the left and end up being on the right and vise versa.

    Nope, does not help =/.
I've only have one decoder on my whole computer, VLC is just a program that has the codecs and decoders intergrated with it so no other players or system files can use them. It's a fresh install of windows and after I installed windows I went straight to chipset drivers (lan, mobo, nforce4, etc). After those I went and installed the video card and the sound card. I then rented a movie and tried playing it. Thats when I got the error, then I nero for a quick decoder because I did not want to go searching through my cds for my purenvida decoder thing.
I went and installed interactual from the cds for my mobo and gave me a corrupt decoder so I needed to watch the movie fast so I just went and installed VLC. After the movie, I uninstalled nero and got the pure nvidia decoder in and the same thing happens. I did remove everything even all registries going to the nero decoder and still the thing presist. The only decoder/codec on my computer now is the purevideo thing. The stuff still happens.
But this time when I installed the purevideo and went into interactual(after updates), it said I cant access the sound drivers for the program. Gi'ves me the following Problem:
You receive an "Audio Subsystem" error in InterActual Player when you attempt to play the disc.
    Solution:
If you encounter an error in the Audio Subsystem when trying to play a DVD in InterActual Player, this usually means that there is an audio component of your system that is needed by InterActual Player, but is not available. Please make sure that any media programs that could use sound resources in your system are shut down. Examples include RealJukebox?, Music Match Jukebox?, or WinAmp. If any of these programs are running in the background, please make sure they are shut down, and try the DVD playback in InterActual Player again.
DVD playback in InterActual software usually uses the DirectSound components of your computer, which are installed with the DirectX set of drivers provided by Microsoft. If you continue to encounter the error, this may mean that DirectSound is not working properly on this system. Problems with DirectSound will most likely affect any program that depends on it, including some audio programs and many games. It may be necessary to upgrade or reinstall DirectX on your computer, as well as upgrading or reinstalling the drivers for your sound hardware as a potential solution to the issue. Please contact your computer manufacturer for help in doing this if you are not sure how to do it.
If nothing else works, this may simply be an installation problem with the DVD playback software provided on your computer, which is causing audio components to not be accessible. You may be able to resolve it by uninstalling and reinstalling this DVD playback software, using the software discs provided by the computer manufacturer. After doing this, try the DVD in the InterActual software again.
I've also tried this with no success now. There's something keeping the directx feature accessing the card is what I think that radio error is for. So, now all I need to know is how to fix this little problem if any one knows.

  • How to Extend S-Video Cable to Watch DVDs on TV?

My TV's built-in DVD player died, so I want to use my iMac as a DVD player but watch DVDs on the TV. The video cable (S-video?) as you know is about 6 inches long. The TV is approx. 15 feet from the iMac. Is there some sort of a cable extender to attach to the "TV" end of the video cable? Thanks.

Here's one possible option (I've never used them but they do do up to 100ft cables).
Remember that S-Video doesn't carry any audio so you'll need to wire that seperately; ideally you'll get something like this.

  • Do you have any ideas on how I may resume my TV volume to full capability after disconnecting the HDMI cable and Macbook Pro to watch DVD's somehow my tv volume got turned down and I can't get it to restore fully. Any constructive ideas?

I  used the HDMI cable from my Macbook Pro to my Panasonic TV to watch DVD's but I had no sound, so I used the community suggestion in going to system preferences>sound etc. followed the instructions and got great sound in fact very loud to my TV so I turned down the volume from my TV remote control. After watching the DVD's I disconnected the HDMI from my TV and realized for some reason my TV volume now is not returning to it's full volume even though I've tried to turn it to it's maximum. Any constructive assistance is truly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey, it's a simple fix that should give most people what they want until there is full VZW support: the ability to use their card with the VZAM software.  I didn't see anyone else offering that suggestion...  If you don't want to use it, you don't have to.
At the very least, this does seem to prove the theory that this is an issue with the 32/64bit compatability that some have refuted.

  • Problems while watching Dvds

    Hi
    I have bought a 32 Hl833 10 days ago
-- everything is alright while watching the regular Tv channels
-- the problems is when I am watching Dvd movies on my Dvd device
-- Dvd device is connected with TV with Scart
(P.S., I am from the eastern Europe)
-- now, the trick is that for unknown reason, while I am watching Dvd device, my Tv is constantly "losing the contact" with device, or like he is trying to identify the device over and over again
-- in reality it means that I am watching a movie, and the Tv is "refreshing" the connection with Dvd device like every 30-120 seconds
-- to describe it better, it feels like:
= you are on the channel for Dvd (output channel 1 or however it is called) and watching a movie, and every 30-60 seconds you get the black screen (the same like when you are switching between channels with your remote controller)
-- so, you know the feeling when you are on Channel 2 and then you click Channel 3 on your remote, and then from the channel 2 you will see the black screen for a few moments and after that you will be redirected to a channel 3
-- and on the top of the screen, you will see the Info, like: Channel 3 in the left top corner and the clock in the right top corner
-- so, while I am on the Dvd channel, it basically feels like the TV is constantly switching channels (without me doing that)
-- but that switching feels like constantly refreshing the same channel over and over again
-- and while watching a movie, it is extremely dumb and annoying
-- you are watching it, and every 30 seconds, you lose the picture for 1-2 seconds, you see the black screen, and then you are on your channel again, and you constantly see the info (number of channel, clock and date on top of the screen)
** It never happens while watching the regular Tv channels
-- so, there is a some problem in connection/compatibility of Dvd device and my Tv, I guess
-- also, sometimes it happens that this problem doesn't happen for 90-120 Minutes at all (or once in the whole movie), and on the other days (this evening again), you get this problem every 30 seconds and it is basically impossible to watch the Dvd
-- I tried to turn off both my Tv, Dvd device, checked all (Scart) connections 20 times
    -- problems is still here
** also, if it happens, it seems that my remote controllers for a Dvd device and a Tv controller have very similar codes
-- for example, I press the Up button on Dvd remote controller, and my Tv suddenly switches to a channel 7 on my Tv :/
-- so, Up button on Dvd device has the same meaning/code as the button for channel 7 on my Tv :/
Anyway, sorry for the long post
I hope that someone will have some good idea
    Thanks in advance

Oh, sorry, I didn't know that this is only for Us models
Anyway, I asked some friends of mine for the advice, and they advised my to try with a new scart cable
I have bought a brand new cable, and it seems that it works good now
(Even though on the old TV, even the old cable was "good", but nevermind)
Anyway, I think I have solved the problem and it seems that the problem was connected with the cable and not the Tv
    Thanks anyway

  • HT2499 Can I use Airplay with dvd to watch dvd on my tv via AppleTV 3?

Can I use Airplay with dvd to watch dvd on my tv via AppleTV 3?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. If your Mac is compatible with AirPlay Mirroring, you can watch your DVD in your TV with the Apple TV. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404 You just have to play the DVD on your MacBook and turn on AirPlay Mirroring.
If your Mac isn't compatible with AirPlay Mirroring, you can use a third-party app like Beamer

  • Linking ibook to tv to watch dvds

I have G4 iBook that i want to linkto my tv to watch dvds. The tv is a Samsung tv purchased in Thailand and only has a yellow and a white RCA (phono) input, no red RCA - I presume this is because it is not a stereo tv, only mono, but 100% sure. What cable is it I need to link the two? I think it goes from headphone outlet to RCA. I asked in an Applemac shop in Bangkok but they weren't sure!!! The guy had a cable which he said worked on G3 but not sure if it worked on G4. I linked up my old G3 to a stereo tv before like this but the cable I used for that doesn't work on my G4.

you'll need two kinds of cables.
one for video - i m not familier with g4. for my macbook, i had to buy one vdo converter adapter from apple store. it costs about 19 bucks. my tv has S-Video input. SO, i bought another S-Video cable from radioshack.
for audio, i got another cable to get the audio o/p from headphone jack on the laptop to the tv.
overall, i felt like i was better off buying a dvd player. lol.

  • Watching dvds in front row = displays sleeps

hi all - i gots the following problem
watching dvds in front row = displays sleeps - or at least dulls back until i use the trackpad to wake it
i assumed that this would not be issue with front row as it would be obvious that i wanted the dvd shown full screen - any ideas?

Wow, I never found this before. I played the dvd in front row on best performance (battery setting) and the display went black. I closed front row and opened it in dvd player and it played for 15 min and never went black.
Any way I went into energy saver and adjusted custom to never turn off display then opened front row. That seems to have worked.

  • Watching DVD's with external speakers?

We like to watch DVD's on our Air. Is there a way to hook up external speakers? I know the Superdrive won't work through a hub. Any ideas or suggestions?

I don't believe such an adapter exists, as a USB device would need software to control it. The software would not be able to "see" the USB device if it passes through the audio jack. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong and have a link to an appropriate adapter.)
If I may ask, is the built-in speaker not sufficient? Or are you trying to hook up the MBA to a large screen TV? If the later, then a simple cable to connect the headphone jack to the TV would be the simplest.
Even just some models of "basic" MP3 powered speakers are very good and are of reasonable cost. I have some off-brand powered speakers that were supposed to match the shape and color of the old CRT iMacs. I got them for $30 new several years ago, when the CRT iMacs where still being sold. The speakers have very good clean bass, not mushy, and are much louder than anything I've heard for under $50, yet still have quite good mid-range clarity. My point is that you may just want to try shopping for some different speakers as you may find some really good ones for a decent price.

  • Really poor image quality when watching DVDs

    Hi,
I was just wondering whether anybody else has experienced really poor image quality whilst watching DVDs on their MacBook? For me, the image is really grainy or blurry. I am pretty sure it cannot be the DVDs as this problem is happening with every film I watch!
Is this a common problem? What can be done (if anything) to resolve this?
    Many thanks,
    John

    Hi John,
open system preference>display, and check if your color depth is in millions color.
try other dvd player like VLC for mac:

  • I think I overused my DVD player watching DVD movies with G5 with tv mirror

I am a switcher. I bought a G5 which has been connected to my tv with a dvi/S connector and a twenty foot cable. I watch a lot of DVD rom training on my TV and then started using my computer to watch DVD movies routinely on tv.. The CD/DVD always makes noises like spinning, but lately has stopped recognizing the DVDs I put in. And once I inadvertenttly inserted a CD on top of a DVD and It ground about making terrible noises before i could get it ejected.
Now can't burn jpgs onto a
DVD and give them to pc friends and family. I don't know if i wrecked the hardware. But any advice on replacing or determining problem would be welcome. I have heard it is better to buy memory, add ons from online stores for better price than Apple store. What should I do? Can I take my G5 in for service in San Diego somewhere without paying more than a good online price for a new DVD/CD burner. And since my G5 is over 6 years old. Which can I upgrade to. I want to be able to burn pics for backup and gifts playable on tvs sold to play jpg. Maybe i did something wrong in burning. I think I was using Lightroom and it chose the burn folder. I am used to using Toast 6. choosing pc/mac compatible during setup. I have a jpg dvd player and it won't read the disc either. Does Tiger's BurnFolder only work on Mac computers after burning CD or DVD. Reason i choose DVD was I had a large media of SLR and they wouldn't all fit on a CD/

    Two options:
Buy a new Pioneer 111 or 112 drive for about $40-50 and change it in about 5 minutes.
Or if you think a new computer is in the offing or you would rather have a DVD drive on the desktop where it is handy, get a LaCie D2 external FW drive and use that. They even provide a full non demo version of Toast with a new D2.
Or if you are indecisive do what I did and get both.

  • Vertical green lines while watching DVD on M40-148

When I try to watch video or DVD on my new laptop there is several vertical green dotted lines across the screen.
Why is that? And how do I get rid of them?

    Hello guys
It is very strange issue. A friend of mine has also M40 and I have tested playing DVD films and everything works fine. It is very strange that you see those lines just while DVD player runs. Something like that should not happen.
In my opinion you should reinstall the unit with recovery DVD and dont make any installation. Immediately after operating system installation try to watch DVD using preinstalled DVD player. If the problem persist contact service partner and let them check the unit. The unit is pretty new and warranty is still valid.
As far as I know the recovery image is tested and something like that should not happen.
    Good luck!

  • Watching dvds with vlc-no right-click 'open with vlc' option as on the pc?

i searched discussions for this question but wasn't sucessful ... so here's my question:
i use a toshiba pc laptop and an iMac G5 ... in order to watch dvds (with different region codes) on my PC, I use VLC with great success ... I wanted to do the same on my iMac, but came across the following problem:
when I want to watch a DVD on the laptop, i simply right-click the title and go for 'open with VLC' (which gives me the menu and so on) ... when I try to do this on the iMac, however, there is no
'open with VLC' option when I right-click the DVD ... I can open single chapters of the DVD by opening the single .vob files, but I'm not happy with doing that ...
any ideas how to make watching DVDs with VLC on my iMac as easy as it is on my laptop?
    thanx for your help!

If you want all video DVDs to open in VLC, go to System Preferences>CDs & DVDs>When you insert a video DVD:>Open other application> and now select VLC.
This will open VLC, but the DVD will not automatically play, you have to go to File>Open Disc once in VLC.
One question though, why not use Apple's DVD player Application?

  • Satellite A105-S2101 - Can't watch DVDs with Express Media Player

I got this Satellite A105-S2101 notebook computer, and the LCD blew out on me within 2 years.
Luckily, I can still make use of the VGA, and S-Video outputs, but it may as well be a desktop PC now. Anyway, I just wanted to add that because of this problem, I no longer am able to watch DVDs with Express Media Player because it wont accept VGA or S-Video as defaults just my busted-up, good-for-nothing, always blurry anyway LCD.
It's only when I am in Windows mode that I can toggle to an external monitor.
The reason I write is, if there ever was a need to add anything for an update to EMP--now's the time and that would be something to add to it. What the heck?

    Hi
I think the Express Media Player does not run in Windows mode
I mean it's not neccessary to run the Windows OSin order to run Express Media Player and therefore the video output does not work in connection with EMP.
I think you will have to use an Windows based software player VLC player is very nice. I use it too its small, free tool and you can play almost all files audio and video.
