Watching DVDs & other video via PBG412" & HDTV

Hello.
I've been using a PBG412" as a media center for the last 4+ years. I have a remote attached (third party infra-red remote) and it works great! This winter my wife and I are considering a new TV for the first time in, well, a long time. Right now we have a small, 20" analog TV and we're looking at getting an HDTV. My biggest concern though is watching video from the laptop to the HDTV. I use the video out (I use composite as that's all the TV will accept, but there's also s-video out) adapter and I'm wondering if anyone knows what I can expect quality-wise when using this to an HDTV? Is there anything I can do to improve this?

There is a YouTube built-in app for watching those videos. If you can't find the app (it can't be deleted), then check that it's not hidden via Settings > General > Restrictions > YouTube.
For videos on other sites then you might find that some of them (probably more so if they are news sites) have their own apps in the App Store which might let you get some of the content that you want (and there is the built-in YouTube app). Also there are browsers such as Skyfire which 'work' on some sites - but judging by the reviews not all sites. If you want to play flash games then you are probably out of luck if you want to play on-line though the iSwifter app might work on some of them, but again some flash games have app versions in the store.

Batch convert VOB, DVDs, Other video files to IPOD, IPhone

I have an Ipod Classic and an IPhone. I have backed up many of my DVDs to my hard drive in DVD Format (series of VOB) files. I'm trying to find a piece of software that can easily just grab a slew of these files and convert them to Ipod and/or iPhone compatible MP4 files unattended. I am not having any luck. I've tried several. Most are lousy at handling VOBs directly and I haven't found any that will do a whole bunch of movies in batch mode. Anybody have a good recommendation. (Windows XP Professional). It's a really nice program that converts not only your HOME MOVIE DVD VOB files, but AVI, MPEG, and others. You can set the CPU usage from high to low with five settings, it has a queue which you can add multiple files to, and it will minimize to the taskbar for compact convenience. There are other Windows programs that do much the same, but I prefer Videora. Oh ... and it's freeware!!

Can't watch PBS, other videos online

It was always possible to watch videos online at PBS and other sites before on the computer at my mother's apartment, but now when I got there, the screen is black, with an error message saying that a plug-in (or plug-ins) is/are blocked. I really don't know what to do about this, and I don't even know which plug-in is involved. I don't want to mess around with the folders in the Library. Several people use the computer, so someone may have changed a setting. I've run Disk Utility, but that did nothing, and my sister, who owns the computer but doesn't live with my mother, couldn't care less about it. My mother loves to be able to see content from PBS and other sites online. Can you help me? I hope that the solution is a simple one.

I think you must be right. The problem, of course, is that my sister has forgotten her adminstrator's password and is disinclined to change it to one she can remember. Well, thanks very much. If she comes around, I'll take it from there.

I can't watch You Tube videos via WiFi but I can in 3G.

This is on all iDevices - not just iPad. It's a new router that supports Smart Wi-Fi apps.
Why? Is this a setting? And it only seems to be You Tube. It says Playback Error
or Video Not Available.

What is the manufacturer and model of your router?
It is possible it is a security setting in the router or the DNS servers it is using. In both cases you'll have to change the settings.
If you are using a school or work network the content is probably restricted by the people running the network. Not much you can do here other than bring it to their attention. Adding a wireless router to these networks may also be against their rules too.

How to Extend S-Video Cable to Watch DVDs on TV?

My TV's built-in DVD player died, so I want to use my iMac as a DVD player but watch DVDs on the TV. The video cable (S-video?) as you know is about 6 inches long. The TV is approx. 15 feet from the iMac. Is there some sort of a cable extender to attach to the "TV" end of the video cable? Thanks.

Here's one possible option (I've never used them but they do do up to 100ft cables).
Remember that S-Video doesn't carry any audio so you'll need to wire that seperately; ideally you'll get something like this.

Thank you for that, I wanted to make sure I was trying to replicate the same thing as you. Just tried it now, works fine for me.
Of note though, this will take a relatively well performing network to achieve this, I have such a network, if your network is not as good as it might be, you might encounter problems.
For the avoidance of doubt, I used the remote app on my phone to get my iTunes library on my computer to stream music to 3 of my Apple TVs, I then used the remote app to control another Apple TV and get it to stream a music video from my computer to it. Of interest I managed to do this while my wife was using yet another Apple TV (not with the remote app) to watch something else from iTunes on my computer.

Of course. If your Mac is compatible with AirPlay Mirroring, you can watch your DVD in your TV with the Apple TV. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404 You just have to play the DVD on your MacBook and turn on AirPlay Mirroring.
If your Mac isn't compatible with AirPlay Mirroring, you can use a third-party app like Beamer

Yes, I've done this. Even signed in and out and went through and disconnected and reconnected all related devices. All other video works over air play, but still comes up with apptv not authorized to play this content for this one video.

Yes, it is standard. But be sure you're looking in your main library, not the library in your home folder. But I recently discovered something far more convenient in the Developer folder. You can install the developer tools on your install/restore disk.
Check out *Developer > Extras > PreferencePanes > Processor.prefPane*
That'll actually let you modify the CPU activation settings from your menu bar or *System Preferences*.

How do I watch other videos other than you tube

I just observed that other than you tube videos, I am not able to watch any other general videos that are posted on the internet. For eg: videos on the cnn website or videos.google.com website. So it looks like apple just built an interface just for you tube and did not provide any other player to play other videos.
I just wanted to understand if my understanding is right and also long term, do u think we will be provided with a player or something that allows us to watch other videos.

If there are other videos posed in the right format, you'll be able to see those as well. The iPhone would have to support Adobe Flash in order to play a lot of that content.

I can't swear to this because I do not have the Netflix app, but I believe that the most recent upgrade to the app requires you to watch the movies in landscape mode now and it cannot be changed.

Watching DVD's and listening via external speakers?

I want to use my MPB in my RV. I have a headphone jack I can plug into the back of my 12V car stereo that I share with my Sirious Satalite radio.
I want to be able to watch DVD movies on my MBP and listen to them on the speakers in my RV. I can do this if my computer is not plugged in to the inverter and is just running on the computer's battery. As soon as I plug it in to the inverter I get a horrible buzzing sound. I can plug my computer in to the inverter however and listen to a movie with my headphones without any wierd noises. Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Your radio is pickup up the noise from the power source for your macbook. What you need is a supressor. You should be able to get them at any auto sound dealer.
It filters out the noise that come from other electrical sources, like altenators, and in you case the power source for you macbook. It gets connected to your radios 12v line.
