Watching FC footage on TV, through HDV/DV deck

Anyone know if it's possible to play an FC timeline on TV via an HDV deck? I have an old TV and want to use it to color correct. I'm using the latest final cut and a top-of-the-line sony HDV/DV deck. Using the decks RCA video out jack, I can see footage on TV when CAPTURING, but when I play a timeline, the TV is blank.

Shane's Stock Answer #25: HDV external Monitor Viewing
HDV cannot be played out of FCP via FireWire because its Long GOP structure is too taxing on your processors to spare the system resources needed to drive an external monitor.
To view HDV on an external monitor you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Blackmagic or AJA offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed.
HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate however.
The best option you have is the Matrox MXO...$1000. This coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you color correction quality...but, it isn't compatible with COLOR yet. (I wrote a full review of the Matrox MXO here.)
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well.

  • Viewing External video through HDV Camera!?

I am trying to record some footage on to an HDV tape. The camera I am attempting to use as a deck is the Sony HDR-HC5 (it is a consumer based camera) I have my sequence set up as the preset for HDV1080i. But for some reason I can not get an image on the camera to show up. When I change the input on the camera to DV, I can see an image. But not when I change it back to HDV.
If anyone knows if this camera can actually take an hdv input that woud be great!
    Cheers,
    Jesse

    Hi,
Are you recording a video or capturing (then trying to monitor your HDV footage externally?
You need a capture card to monitor HDV.
Also there are some threads reporting specific issues with your camera model,
Use the the search tool of the forum to check out topics about the HC5.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

  • Can I watch movies stored on tc through wi-fi on my mac

can I watch movies stored on tc through wi-fi on my mac?

Streaming over wireless.. Hmmm if I say it works well and it doesn't I will get the blame.. if I say it doesn't work and he tries it and finds out it does.. he will think I'm a dupe or a dope..
There is no single right answer. On paper yes, wireless can do it.. in practice.. it depends on a huge number of variables. My experience.. and not with this equipment.. is that wireless can happily stream a show for an hour.. and then suddenly start to judder and flutter and pause and cause angst and misery. I don't trust it. Try it and see.. it might work good for you. It might work sometimes.. it might not work at all. Or it could just be snail like slow. Use the experimental method.. suck and see.
On more general note.. what files are you going to play from the TC.. I use WD Live as it plays everything.. Apple make the ATV to link to itunes.

  • Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 - Preview HDV on a SD TV through the playback deck?

Im coming to the end of my HDV production and I desperatly need to checkj the footage on a TV monitor before I master it off for DVD.
My deadline is Wednesday 15th Aug
_*Can I preview my HDV time line through my playback deckusing Fire wire and see the results as SD????*_
Do I need some sort of card to do this?
I hope there is an easy solution in my settings.
    Thanks

No. Sorry, HDV is not previewable via firewire on ANY monitor in FCP 5.1. FCP 6 will allow you to do this...output HDV as DV for viewing. But then you are viewing HDV as SD and not HD, so the colors will be different.
The Matrox MXO is the solution you are looking for. It will send an HD signal to an Apple 23" computer monitor...a true broadcast signal. Or it will downconvert HD to SD to view on a regular TV.

  • I am getting old and looking forward to use I Pad as a Phone if possible through WIFI! I this possible? The screen is to small for me! If possible, with new I Watch taking calls, other uses through I Pad!

Like I wrote on title, I am getting old and it is not easy to see E-mails, news etc. on a I phone! New I phone will not help me for the size.
If possible, everything without calls, I would like to use I Pad as direct unit, and for calls through I Pad over WIFI all calls. If a call as Skype, I would like
to use the I Pad as a monitor. Is this possible?
I found on a side that there is a product for people for better hearing, which can be put into the ears, using WIFI with I Phone.
If this product could be used also for I Pad as a Phone for hearing, and the I watch or I Pad as Microphone, it will be great for old Mac users.
Is this possible with our system know?
I am using Mac since Classic II! Would like to continue with the newest items with the possibility for old person with bad Eyes or Ears.
Looking forward for a kind answer
    with regards
    Christian an old Mac user!

    Definitely No

  • Is there anyway to burn footage without going through iDVD?

I have almost an hour of unedited footage that I need burned on a dvd so someone else can work with it (I'm pretty sure they don't have imovie) but I don't know how I would go about burning it without having to go through iDVD and making a main menu (what I don't want). Is this possible? Thanks!

How would you go about taking the footage in imovie and placing it in the burn folder?
    1) Create a "New Burn Folder" using the Finder "File" menu.
    2) Drag and drop source files from the named_ Event folder to the "Burn Folder."
    3) If source files are too large for the media to which you plan to burn them, either divide the files from within iMovie '08 or use an application like QT Pro ($30) or MPEG Streamclip to trim/divide the content into suitable segments and save using the "Save As..." File menu option before dragging to the burn folder.

  • Is there a way to watch another family members movies through family share without downloading the entire movie?

Before family share my kids were signed in under my apple ID. They had the ability to just stream whatever Disney movies they wanted that we owned. Now they have to download the entire movie to watch it? Seems a bit over kill to me. Plus those movies fill up their entire ipads.

Think of all this as two entities, 1. your Apple ID's and 2. Apple services (and by services I mean iCloud, iTunes, Home Sharing, Messages, FaceTime, Support Communities etc etc).
You can choose to use a different ID for each service, thereby creating the flexibility you are looking for.
For iCloud (which syncs contacts, mail, calendars etc) I suggest you each use your own ID, this means you will have your own contacts etc.
For iTunes, you might use separate ID's or you might both use the same one, I make no suggestion here because there are benefits to both ways. You may want to keep your music, movie, books and app purchases separate or you may want to unite them to avoid potentially paying for things twice.
For Home Sharing I suggest you use just one ID, it doesn't matter who's it is, so long as you both use the same one, this will ensure that any device using home Sharing can see and play the content from anyone's library on the same network (regardless of which ID it uses for iTunes) that is logged into the same home sharing account.

  • Can i watch tv shows previously purchased through itunes on an apple tv?

if so, do they stream every time i decide to watch an episode or are they stored locally?  each episode of LOST is ~1.3GB for example.
i also subscribe to itunes match.  not sure if this makes a difference.

Yes, but only in the US at this time. iTunes Match is for music.

  • Watching streaming videos on TV through iPad mini

My parents have an iPad mini. I got them a subscription to netflix and would like to buy a cable to connect iPad mini to their tv so they can watch streaming videos on there. A rep from Apple told me that there is no such cable and I must buy Apple TV.  Is that correct?
Thanks in advance for any help or adivce.

only apps which were made to support av out will display on the tv
test with the build in apple video app
if it does work and whatever other app don't the fault is with the other app not with the ipad and or cable

  • What is the cheapest way to be able to watch NETFLIX on my TV through my computer?

I am wanting to cancel some of my cable programs, so that my bill wasn't so high and I thought about streaming to my TV from my iMac, but wasn't sure on the most inexpensive way?  Can anyone help?

if the iMac is in another room, the Apple TV is cheapest and easiest ($100).
Depending on the age of the iMac and if it's close, you can buy a Moshi HDMI adapter ($35) and an HDMI cable (varies by length) and basically turn the TV into another monitor. New HDMI can carry both video and audio. If it's older, you will need a 3.5mm split Y RCA cable to carry audio.
But honestly after buying those wires, you're close enough to the Apple TV price, you might as well buy that. it's easier and an advantage of that is now you can watch netflix and use your iMac simultaneously.

  • Canon 7D footage H.264 through Compressor First????

I'm using a Canon 7D and wondering if I should take that original footage into Compressor and add the ProRes422 LT codec to it first. If so, I would assume I would then take that compressed file into FCP to be edited. This is totally backward from what I've been doing.
The other option I'm thinking is this. Bring in the original 7D footage and as soon as I start a new sequence with that footage go into the SEQUENCE SETTINGS and on the main GENERAL TAB go to the QUICKTIME VIDEO SETTINGS and change that to ProRes422 LT and also go to the RENDER CONTROL TAB and change that to ProRes.
I am confused as to what to do. I will be building a DVD with multiple chapters (sequences) in iDVD after FCP editing. Now, if I do the above, would I need to send the edited file to compressor or just go straight to Quicktime Movie and then drop that file in iDVD.
Please excuse me. I am a TOTAL NEWB and really do not understand the whole ProRes thing or the proper steps I should take to get things done. Also, I am using a green screen and when everything is done these files are huge. I have sometimes been experiencing some loss in chromakeying quality, which is not acceptable at all since these videos will be for sale and not just for personal use.

    HI there,
You absolutely must convert the native canon 7D (H.264) files into prores before you start editing in FCP. dont do it the way you are thinking.
H.264 is a delivery codec not an editing codec, and FCP will have troubles with it.
    so your workflow should be
    1. copy full contents of card onto a drive (easy to create a dmg).
    2. use compressor (or EOS plugin or others) to transcode to Pro res (LT is fine)
    3. edit in a sequence that matches your source settings.
    4. export quicktime (use current settings) self contained
    5. input these to compressor to create your dvd files
    6. build dvd (use dvd studio pro - its more flexible)
There are lots of other little tips and trickes that will aid a smooth workflow but thats the basics, if you do a search here or look up Shane Ross "tapeless workflow" you will get some deeper understanding of what is required.
    cheers

  • Footage inadvertently shot in HDV 30F - now problems capturing

After someone borrowed my Canon XHA1 camera, he left the settings at HD 30F and I didn't check it before shooting a soccer game.  My Sony deck does not read that format, so I've tried to capture from the camera.  My sequence settings are HDV 1080p30 which some forums say should work.  But I just get the message "capture device offline."  Any suggestions?

When you created the project, did you remember to change the setting from DV to HDV?

Nope, no fix coming because it isn't broken. Works that way by design. What version of iOS are you running on the iPhone? Music videos were moved to the Video app some time ago, even for iPhone.
