Watching movies on ATV 2nd gen

I have made about 10-12 movies on FCPX and Imovie 11, and share them and add to itunes. Some of the events are stored on 2 different external harddrives. When I connect the 2 harddrives I can watch the movies in ATV, but if I disconnect them, I can only watch some of the movies. Is there an easy way to make my movies viewable in ATV without having the 2 harddisks plugged in?

Rented movies will not play on a 5th Generation iPod.
Do you have Movies turned on in the View Options in iTunes? (Not sure if you're saying "Movies" doesn't show in the iTunes list or on the iPod.) On the iPod, look for Movies under the Videos menu.

  • Is ther a chance that atv 2nd gen read .mkv format?

    hallo,
as a new Apple TV (2nd generation),
i have been trying to change all my storage from .mkv to .m4v (that is the best for the atv)
i have been trying some software like
    1. visual hub
    2. HandBrake
    3. submerge
i have to say that when you want subs, submerge to that in the best way and the atv showed the subs in perfect way. (not cutout on speech breaks like HandBrake)
submerge do that different and simply makes the sub file part of the .m4v.
i have to say that all the software that i have write above to export from .mkv to .m4v or other format do that very but very slowly!
it takes an 2 and a half hours to convert tv show on .mkv that contain 45m of showtime to .m4v.
the file is 1.7Gb capacity (the normal for hd ready (720p) tv show.
now take a second and imagine how many time takes to convert and merge subs to file like movie in 720p that is capacity is 4.7Gb at least.
it takes like one day at least and stuck the software in the middle. seems like impossible to do that.
the whole convert and export thing takes forever and is very annoying that you cant simply convert your storage to .m4v from .mkv in the easy way and without to wait so many time.
if anybody have software or idea
1.how to the convert and merge simply and fast?
    2. the other way to make the atv 2nd gen to read an mkv file with subs (it seems the best way and i would like to know how to doing that)
hopes that my little post here help to some new atv 2nd gen users to understand the all pictur.
    regards and thank you all

so i can say that "apple tv is not a streamer".
No, AppleTV will stream video from your PC/Mac, but it has to be in the iTunes library with iTunes open, and has to be in the correct format which for most purposes will be h264.
    See under video formats:
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html
popcorn a110, xstreamer and others better then him because the smp8634 chip?
The chips in some media players may confer some advantages, but it's more a question that Apple don't support MPEG/MPEG-2/ISO/Video_TS/AVI/Divx/MKV etc etc on the AppleTV
Full HD in certain formats/codecs may be beyond AppleTV's hardware, but many others would work if they were supported, it's just that they're not, so you have to convert non-compatible video using apps like the ones you've mentioned.
Many will disagree but I personally think it was a big factor that held back AppleTV1 sales - many of the other formats are popular and widely used, but Apple don't want to support them on AppleTV for one reason or another.
Maybe they expect you to buy/rent everything from iTunes, though there are undoubtedly other factors.
and why apple dosent want to add him the srtreamer option that he can read any format that exist just like the a110 and xstreamer pro
It's nothing to do with streaming, AppleTV does stream, the AppleTV software only supports streaming the formats listed in the specs. As you say there are devices with a much wider repertoire of supported formats, it may be one of those would be better for you.
AppleTV's big plus point is it's user interface - many other (mostly WD) streamers I've tried have very poor interfaces, I've not tried the ones you mention.
why make are lifes so hard!??! (-:
Some will say Apple support a limited set of formats as there are so many variations out there that even devices that say they support things don't fully or have problems with certain files, and limiting formats will reduce issues.
Personally I think it's because they assume most content will come from Macs iLife apps or itunes Store which will produce content in suitable formats. Some will argue that containers like MKV are simply used for potentially illegal disc rips and therefore Apple won't support them (or maybe is pressurised by content providers not to provide them?).
    Anyhow, send feedback here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
I don't think we'll see new formats added, but you never know.
Also, it will be interesting to see what Airplay from iPhones/iPads offers - if it's available to any application this might be a gateway to different format support given teh likes of VLC being ported (in a limited form so far) to iPad.

how do i transfer movies from ATV 3rd gen to iMac? help!

    You don't - AppleTV 3 store nothing.
Instead (assuming th efeature is available in your country), you download from the internet in iTunes.
Either on the iTunes store home page or in the Movies category you should find Purchased Quicklinks on the right side of the screen - redownload movies there.  Set download quality in iTunes Preferences.

  • Music playlist track order... iTunes vs ATV 2nd Gen

Streaming music from my iTunes Library to new 2nd Gen AppleTV: When I attempt to listen to a music playlist from my iTunes library through AppleTV, the track order within the ATV playlist does not match that of the playlist in my iTunes library. The songs within the ATV playlists are always sorted alphabeticaly by song title and do not match the sorting of playlists in my iTunes library.
I contacted an Express Lane advisor about this, case number 186510612, and was politely advised that there's apparently no solution. The advisor recommended that I submit feedback (which I did).
Track order on a music playlist is very important for several reasons. Any suggestions?

I couldn't agree more. I, too, have been an Apple/Mac user from the beginning. This seemed like such an elementary issue that I was convinced I was missing something simple. Evidently not, based on your experience and the response I got from tech support. I encourage you to report this issue in "feedback" http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and maybe Apple will fix it in a software update.
For now, ATV is almost unusuable for streaming live album playlists with "intro" tracks. Moreover, studio album track order on ATV does not correspond with that intended by the album producer which, in itself, denegrates the artistic experience.

  • Home movies on ATV (1st Gen).

Under "movies" on my ATV (and on Front Row app.) I have movies and/or slideshows that I didn't add, and want to remove them. Conversely I recently created a movie of family photos with music on iMovie, moved to iDVD then saved as an img extension. I burned DVDs without problems. I would like to move it to "movies" on my 1st Gen ATV for showing, but haven't been able to do it. Can you advise me of the procedure to accomplish this, both removing unwanted movies and adding wanted movies to the ATV. Thank you.

    Hi!
Open your project in iMovie. Click on "share" at the top of the screen. When the menu appears, click on "share to iTunes". You will get a menu asking you to pick what size you want. Go for the large size for the ATV. When it's done sharing, (may take awhile depending on how long the movie is) if your ATV is set to auto synch new content, it will copy over right away. If not, you can manually synch it, or just stream it. Hope that helps!

  • Forget WiFi Network ? / ATV 2nd Gen.

How can I forget a wifi network on the Apple TV 2nd Gen.
My ATV led light comes on after I plug or unplug the wifi network at the house.

The ATV only remembers the last wifi network you accessed. It doesn't work like a regular computer. So if you accessed two wifi networks in your home, only the last one is remembered. If you connect via ethernet and then go back to wireless, it will still remember that last connected wifi hotspot but that's it.

  • ATV 2nd Gen Rebooting on Netflix/PBS Programming

Our much enjoyed second generation ATV with up to date software is connected via ethernet (Comcast)  to a Vizio HDTV.
For the last month, I have experienced reboots of the ATV while viewing either PBS programming or Netflix/PBS content.  My husband views numerous podcasts on the ATV each day and has yet to have a problem.  No issue when playing either purchased or rental movies/shows.
The frequency of the reboots is steadily increasing (10) and as of last night, the reboots occurred three times at the same point-time. I can go to Netflix or PBS on any of our other devices iMac, iPad, or iPhone, without issues.
I would conclude I need to upgrade my ATV but for the fact that only occurs watching Netflix and PBS  programming.
    Anyone else having these issues?
    Any suggestions?

  • Apple TV (2nd gen) not showing up as a device in iTunes

    Hi all,
I have this problem. The Apple TV (2nd gen) does not show up in iTunes under devices, and I really don't know why.
    Mac OSX 10.6.5
    iTunes 10.1
AppleTV 2nd gen with latest update installed
Network is a WiFi Airport Extreme (Mac and AppleTV are indeed on the same private network)
Airplay works, home sharing works fine. Remote App on iPad and iPhone works.
But the AppleTV is not showing up under devices.
I had a 1st gen AppleTV which I reverted to "factory settings" before unplugging. The 2nd gen ATV had the same name as the 1st gen at the beginning, but I changed it afterwards figuring it might be related.
Under iTunes > preferences I had the AppleTV tab. But I did read somewhere on Apple's site you have to "delete" the AppleTV from the list. So I did, and now the tab cannot be found anymore...
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you in advance.

I seem to recall though that I have seen a screenshot somewhere on the web where iTunes showed the ATV 2nd gen as a device.
Not seen that, but the old ones have a logo that look (to me) like the new one, or at least a small darker grey than they are - they show up nicely in the iPad/iPhone Remote app though
If you are right it would be huge disappointment!
I believe I am correct as I've got new/old AppleTVs connected to 3 Macs and a dual boot Mac Pro currently, and the new unit has never appearede under devices.
.... I really HATE the interface organization right now. Why on planet earth do I have to go under "devices" -> "computer" -> "music" just to play some music?
You, me and many other AppleTV 1 users. I think they'd finally got it right in 3.02 for AppleTV 1 which is a much nicer user interface. Basically now the majority of the top level columns are unused by many people who don't rent but want to playback theit iTunes media.
I firmly believe Apple see this new AppleTV as a relatively cheap accessory for iPads/iPhones/iPods to show video/photos via Airplay on your TV without using a computer.
Secondly it's a vehicle for pushing itunes Store rentals, but for the majority of worldwide users they can only get Movie rentals, and Netflix is of no use bar in a few countries (US/Canada).
I would have much more preferred that a "music" tab (it also applies to all other tabs, movies, tv series and so on) and then just a list of all "home sharing" connected computers from which I could pick the one where the music is stored. Or even, and being Apple it surprises me they didn't implement it, just the list of the available music on my network, with a little tab indicating in which computer it is located.
Yes that would make absolute sense - a dynamic list of available content based on connected libraries that changes as new libraries appeared on/left the local network.
The new menu organisation is quite shoddy to me, ut many users new to AppleTV like it and rave about the devices not knowing what the old one could do - it's a good device don't get me wrong, but I still prefer the older units except for their power consumption and the fact I feel they are more likely to fail due to their high temps and mechanical hard drives.
But here I'm venturing FAR off topic.
    Don't think so, it's a valid comment.

Thank you for your help anyway. I wait for confirmation of somebody else just to make sure...
    Fair enough.

  • Apple TV 2nd Gen - Disgustingly Slow - Help!

I'm about to pull the rest of my hair out on my baldy head!
Been really excited about this product but having such problems with streaming speeds.
    Here is my set up:
    - ATV 2nd Gen connected to tv in lounge.
    - Internet feed over mains electriciy from Belkin N1 modem router (in other room) and plugged directly into ATV 2nd Gen.
    - Currently paying for 4mb broadband.
ATV 2nd Gen connected to the internet no bother and itunes store:
    - It took nearly 30 mins to stream a 2 min HD preview.
    - Even standard definition took ages.
    - Did a network test in settings (which also took 15 mins) but everything came up fine!
Is there a suggested speed for using this product?
Am i doing something fundamentally wrong?
Please, for the sake of my thining hair...

If you are getting low speeds on a high speed connection it means there is a lot of traffic at the time you are accessing it. Apple's content has been known to take awhile, has to do with their servers and the way they stream content. Have you tried netflix/youtube/podcasts?
I am on a 7mbps connection, have no problems with those 3 categories. Will be curious to try renting a movie to see how long it takes (although it's not something i will likely do that much, content is a little pricey)

  • HD videos on ATV 1st Gen?

I have the 1st Gen ATV downstairs and the 2nd Gen ATV upstairs.  I have been succesfully streaming video from my PC to both my ATV's without a problem for well over a year.  Just recently I purchase a GoPro Camera which shoots video in 1080p as an MPEG-4 Movie.  My 2nd Gen ATV plays the content just fine but my 1st Gen cannot seem to reconize the video at all.  The videos definetely exist in the iTunes library but the 1st gen won't even show them as an available movie to play.  It's simply not there.
All other videos from my iTunes library are streaming just fine to both ATV's - it's only these new videos from my GoPro camera that are the issue.  The only difference, from what I can gather, is that these videos are shot at 1080p.

  • 2nd gen Apple TV sync issues

Just wondering if anyone one else is seeing this problem and if they know of any fixes/workarounds. I have several movie files that have some corrupt frames. If I play them back with my 1st generation apple tv or iTunes they play with no problems, it just plays through the corrupt frames. When I play the same movie with the 2nd gen apple tv when it gets to the corrupt frames the video stops and the audio keeps going. Sometimes if I hit pause then play it will work and start playing OK. Sometimes I have to fast forward a bit. After doing this a few times the movie will finally jump back several chapters.
Also is apple looking into a fix for this problem?
    TIA for any help.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If the movie file is corrupt, almost anything might happen in some circumstances. I wouldn't have thought you can expect Apple to resolve an issue that is caused by a corrupt video file.

  • If I initially rent and begin watching a movie on my Apple TV (2nd Gen) can I later change and finish watching it on my iMac (same iTunes account)?

If I initially rent and begin watching a movie on my Apple TV (2nd Gen) can I later finish watching it on my iMac (registered with same iTunes account)?

The other way to do this would be to download all your rentals onto the Mac, then you can choose watch them on the Mac or Airplay them to the ATV.
At least that way you can switch back and forth as often as you like during the "watching" period AND have 1 month to begin watching it after you've downloaded it.

  • 2nd GEN ATV - does it only stream?

I have the first gen ATV -- one of my major complaints is the time that it takes to download a movie from iTunes.  Originally, I thought I would just rent a movie and it would automatically stream within seconds and I'd be good to go (like NetFlix or Optimum) but apparently the movie is downloaded to the ATV which sometimes takes well over an hour.  Even if I can start playing the movie after a few minutes, it will often pause during the movie until the remaining content is downloaded.
Does the 2nd gen act differently?  Is movie content still downloaded from iTunes or is it streamed where I don't have to wait?
Also, my ATV first gen has a 40G drive for storing content locally.  Can I still store local content on the 2nd gen or is there really no need to do that anyway?
    thanks

It works in a similar manner to AppleTV1 so you are unlikely to see any benefit, in fact you will probably get worse performance.
Both devices recieve a stream which is cached locally, but AppleTV2 only has a small amount of solid state memory not a hard drive.
When AppleTv 1 or 2 calculates enough of the stream has arrived to allow uninterrupted playback it will allow you to start and continue to get the rest of the stream while you watch.
If you get interruptions it is likely your internet performance is fluctuating throwing the calculation out.
Apple rentals are fixed size 1-1.5Gb or so for SD, 3-4GB for HD.  Netflix adjusts the quality of the stream to allow slower connections to view more quickly at the expense of quality.
With AppleTV2 if you do something else with the unit whilst waiting for a movie to cache it will often flush the cache requiring the download to restart.  With AppleTV1 it sometimes does the same, but it will not flush the completed 'download' until it expires.
