Watching movies on computer and Apple TV

If I rent a movie on my MacBook Pro and start streaming it, can I move to to the living room and continue watching the movie on Apple TV.

Hey Norman Duke,
I found the following information about moving your rental from your MacBook Pro to an Apple TV:
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.

  • HT3702 I am able to purchase music, but I cannot purchase movies, credit card processing unavailable.  On computer and Apple TV.

Tried to purchase movies on computer and apple tv, same issue.

The security code is the 3 or 4 digit code outside of the actual card number (and NOT the same as your PIN). It is usually located on the front of AMEX cards and on the back of Visa and MC. You typically wouldn't need that for purchases in a physical store. Log into your AppleID, modify the payment method  and set it with the proper code.

  • Anybody know how to fix the audio while watching movies on first generation apple tv?

Anybody know how to fix the audio while watching movies on first generation apple tv? On my apple tv, I can hear audio for music, music videos, youtube, internet radio and even movie previews! But..... when I pay for the rental download of a movie there is no audio - just visuals. I am connecting with hdmi. When I connect an apple tv 2nd generation to the same amp and tv, using same hdmi and even same power lead and same settings then there is no problem! Anybody know how I can get audio to work for movies for this?

that makes sense and good point but no don't think so. Where would I check that setting? I had same problem on my next gerneration apple tv (black model) but when I switched off the dolby then I could hear movie. In this case that does not work for the first generation (white) apple TV I have whether dolby is on or off. I have never been able to watch a movie using it.

How are you trying to install Lion 10.7.3? Where did you get that version as the current download version is 10.7.4.
Why are you installing 10.7.3? What OS X version was on the computer before you started this install?

  • Hi! I'm from Brazil and I'm having troubles with subtitles. Watching movies from iTunes and Netflix, the subtitles shows yellow, too small and into gray boxes! I'm having this kind of trouble with my iPad also.

    Solution found.
I am a Vodafone customer and installed the Vodafone app which asks you to turn off wifi connection on installation as it needs to communicate with their servers over 3G.
After restoring the iPad via iTunes this is the only app that I did nor re-install and seems to be too much of coincidence that while in full screen view watching films my wifi is switched off and 3G data connection is established 10 - 15 minutes into a fiilm and my data allowance gets eaten up!
I would also get push notifications from Vodafone saying "my daily data usage was almost used" with this app installed.
Have tested and on 3rd time watching sky go still wifi is on after 30 mins.
DO NOT INSTALL VODAFONE APP FROM THE APP STORE.

That listed 7 hours is with very limited use. Low screen brightness, low keyboard backlight, No WiFi or bluetooth.
Most I have ever gotten from my 15" 2011 model is around 5-6 hours and that was with very light use. Just Web, Chrome, and email, thunderbird, and Wifi.

  • I have home sharing turned on both my itunes on my computer and apple tv, but the icon to use apple on my computer will not work.

I have turned home share on both my apple tv and itunes but i still can't get the apple tv icon to appear on my computer.

    Hello chandlos23,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  I found some information that might help with transferring information between your computer and Apple TV.  I found an article about Home Sharing that talks about what Home Sharing does and how to set it up:
You can use Home Sharing in iTunes 10.5 or later and on Apple TV to share the iTunes library and photos of any computer on your home network.
You can find the full article here:
Setting up Home Sharing for Apple TV (2nd generation and 3rd generation)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4352
If you are trying to setup Airplay from your computer, I also found some articles on how to set that up.  AirPlay Mirroring lets you send what’s on your Mac screen to an HDTV wirelessly with Apple TV.  If you are running Mountain Lion on a Mac compatible with Airplay Mirroring, you can share your whole screen using these steps:
About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X Mountain Lion
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
If you are not running Mountain Lion, you can still use Airplay with iTunes and iOS devices following the steps in this article:
    Using AirPlay

    I hope this helps!

  • Do I still need 3 versions of each movie 1) Computer 2) Apple TV 3) iPod?

Not sure the best format to import movies into iTunes (not from the store) but do I still need to have a version for
    1) The computer
    2) Apple TV
    3) iPod
and is there a way to sort or filter these 3 types in iTunes or Apple TV?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
Netflix uses an adaptive format, i.e. it varies it's quality according to connection speed and can go as low as 0.5 Mbps, although it won't look too good.
    You have two options:
You can download to iTunes on your computer, it likely won't download any quicker, but it will stay there and so don't need to worry about stopping the movie in the middle (movies downloaded to the computer will need to be fully downloaded before they will stream to the Apple TV).
You could also switch to SD (settings > general > iTunes Store), your movies will download more quickly if you do this.

  • How do I actually use home sharing between my apple computer and apple tv?

I have current updates, have set up the computer and Itunes to share the music.  I have the library and get to the point where I can select a song and it shows me how long it will play with a cursor.  I cannot get the cursor to start the playing.  Should the computer be on or off and should I try to play the song I want by using the computer some how.
Hope I have confused u enough.

You can set up "iCloud" on all of them and select there to sync your Documents.  You must be running Mountain Lion on the MBA and iOS 6 on the iPhone and iPad in order to use iCloud:

  • How do I limit home sharing to my own computer and apple tv

I have a renter in my home......how Can I use home sharing on my mac and apple tv without the renter having access to my computer

The short answer: because Home Sharing isn't designed for sharing apps, and apps aren't designed to be shared.
The longer answer:  Think of it like this...
You download some music in iTunes.  With Home Sharing, another user can listen to it by streaming it over the network.  But the data itself is on your computer.  If you turn off the computer or take it off the network, the other user can't access it.
But if you send another user the app, they aren't just streaming the data- they installed it on their iOS device.  Because they weren't the one that purchased it, such a transfer could easily be considered "piracy" or "stealing," and nobody likes that (least of all, Apple).
When iTunes sees this app, it obviously recognized it, as if saying, "Hey, how did you get this app on your device, if I have no record of you purchasing/downloading it from the iTunes store?"

  • Sync iPhone movie with iTunes and Apple TV

What is the correct way to get a movie taken with my iPhone to iTunes and Apple TV. The movie was copied to iPhoto, but cannot get it onto iTunes in the movie list and into Apple TV. Thanks.

yes, me too. I went to play my stuff tonight - and blam, Apple TV icon is not there. Nothing I do brings it back. Reset everything - turn it all off and on. Nada. This is really annoying.

  • HT3180 When trying to play itunes and slideshows from my Mac book to Apple TV the small icon on the bottom right of the screen which switches between Computer and Apple TV doesn't always show up, and therefore the function doesn't work.  What's up?

We are trying to play playlists and a slideshow from an Apple Macbook wirelessly to the Apple TV.  The small, upward arrow icon that appears on the bottom right of the screen (which allows you to pick Computer or Apple TV) doesn't always show up, and therefore, we can't get it to work.  Any thoughts?

Airplay mirroring software will not work with anything below Mountain Lion 10.8 and an Apple computer from 2011 or newer.

Go to "About this Mac" and tell us:
    1. What OS X version you are running
And then click on "More Info" and tell us
    1. What year is your Macbook.
Also tell us a little about your cable and Wireless setup.
    Maybe we can help.

  • Can watch movie on computer but NOT on ATV

    Hi there,
So I downloaded an MPEG-4 and dumped it into itunes. The movie plays fine on my computer, but won't play on ATV. It starts and plays for 2 or 3 seconds where the audio sounds fine but the video frames freeze and skip, then eventually the audio and video freeze and ATV restarts itself or just stays frozen and I have to restart it manually. I've gone back and re-synched the file but still get the same result. Any ideas? All my other movies/TV shows within itunes play fine both on computer and TV...
    Thanks in advance.

    can be lots of things..
movies can play in iTunes that won't on appleTV (remember files on the computer are local so less restrictions can be placed on these files than the ones that need to get transmitted throught the air to an appleTV)
    1) is the movie in spec for appleTV?
    Video formats supported
H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels, 640 by 480 pixels, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
    2) i experience a problem similar to this and i had a failing hard drive.. movie would stop playing and iTunes would become unresponsive
    3) is the movie synced on the appleTV or are you streaming it... if you are streaming to the appleTV over WiFi it could be interference from microwaves, cordless phones, other nearby WiFi networks etc... does the problem still happen if the movies is on the appleTV?
